Title: Who has ever had a big slap from ebay ? For listing a ummmm you know what !
Post by: Rob Dean on October 27, 2014, 01:22:02 PM
Yep ME , 2 rare items taken off as per instruction of 'The Beach Boys/BRI- Brother Records Inc' BLIMEY  ::) - I must be one of the few unlucky folk , as it doesn't take long to find RARE items on ebay does it ?

Shame as there were a large number of people 'watching' one of the said items.

Lesson learnt me lord  :police:

I remember when you could buy/sell bootlegs on Ebay. They cracked down on it quite a few years ago.

Rob, I assume that those were the 'rare' items in question that BRI and/or the RIAA didn't care for. Can't see them removing any other rare items, unless it was proprietary or illicit propaganda or derogatory in some way towards the band or a member of the band. Like Murry's glass eye or the newspaper that Brian crapped on or some damn thing....

Well one was quite common (ish) (of which you will have a few copies of) and one not so AND yes you would already have it (I am very sure) - Yes on ebay.co.uk but was/were listed worldwide

I'm never certain how to tell if items are listed worldwide. I know when I list stuff, I include I'll sell to anyone /anywhere( why would ya?) except maybe to Russia/Italy, but I can't remember ever having trouble except once I think to Italy so long ago.
Oops, sorry, anyway, I'm  certain I've found stuff listed on ebay UK that hasn't shown up on the US ebay, so I'm just wondering how that happens( not that you probably know)  but maybe EBay monitors this board?
Shame there's not a section on this board for selling stuff...

Maybe a Trading Post Section , save the admin of it - Just people post links within it of what they have listed on ebay

Now I list them on a site BRI doesn't police instead.

I've had um... 'grey area' stuff removed by ebay before.  Don't be worried about it, they just delete the thing and move on.  They won't penalize you or anything.  Sucks though because you lose out on what could have been a good sale!

Probably about ten years ago someone I might know put the vinyl version of Adult/Child (the one with a fat nude back on the back and the words "Brian's Back!" written on it) on eBay. This person got a notice a few days later that the auction was removed at the request of Brother, and they included the e-mail address of BRI in the notice, something like "surfkillers@some_domain_I_dont_remember_after_ten_years.com"...I know the "surfkillers" part was right though.

I know of "somebody" that had an ebay listing removed recently. There was an email address associated with BRI. A Google search by this person of this email address led to a user on this board that has been registered for years but never posted.

Big Brother is indeed watching!

About 4 months I had my Green SMiLE LP and Brian Loves You taken down after about 10 minutes.  Which is weird because I had seen countless others up for weeks.

BTW...said person who had an Adult/Child vinyl -- a person whom I might or might not know -- got the take-down notice AFTER the item had actually sold! So the buyer still got it. :)

lesson for the future: if you see something you like of this sort, immediately message the seller( even if it's a silly or odd question/statement);
this way you'll at least have a conduit to them should the item disappear

If you're obsessed with Smile, as I know you are, then you've already heard every fragment of music on all three albums of the set. Only difference is the purty vinyl, the poster, and the cover. That's it!  If you're a big collector, then I can see a reason to get it.  Otherwise, well, the Smile Sessions have been released and the bootlegs (which progressed leaps and bounds in quality since 1993) have since slowed to a trickle.

Well, to be fair, I just bought the "Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2" CD in a record shop, and I can almost guarantee I've heard all of that.  Not to mention, in much, MUCH better quality - and not at chipmunk speed.

(Besides - the Vigotone Smile has that entire side of Psycodelic Sounds material.)

The H&V Sessions boot is a good one. Be sure to get the Purple Chick Smile, Secret Smile, and the SOT's if you don't have them already. And of course the Smile boots list on the other thread as a guideline.

I think I have the Purple Chick Smile, never cared much for it for some of their editing tactics (like that ugly slow-down at the end of "Look").  Was "Secret Smile" just a set of MP3's?  In that case, I think I have that as well.

Someone found me a really inexpensive Vigotone "Smile" vinyl set (with all the goodies attached) so I have that on the way, too.

As far as vinyl boots go, I think the last one I'll try to find is the 'second edition' Brother one.

Does anyone know what's so different about that, other than obviously the removal of the Miles Davis track?  Like, do they use an actual Smile version of "Wonderful" rather than the Smiley Smile one?

There are just so many outtakes in these sessions where Brian stops everything for no apparent reason, and you just want to scream "GODDAMMIT BRIAN, IT WAS FINE!!"

I guess to him the instruments didn't sound enough like jewelry, or crying, or velvet pancakes. :-P

Quick question - are there only four unofficial Smile vinyls?  The original boot (Brother Records), the Second Edition (Brother Records), the 3-LP colored edition (Vigotone) and the recent colored single-disc version (Sea Of Tunes)?

Quick answer - the first two were put out by the same guy. The third and fourth ones were put out by different guys.

As far as Smile boots on vinyl, that's pretty much all that was available in the early to mid-80's (when they were made). Most of that material was circulating on cassette tape amongst collectors before it made it onto vinyl. CD's started coming into production around 1985 and bootleg CDR's and factory silvers followed suit not long after.

There were other vinyl bootlegs in the early 80's (See Beach Boys Collector's Series) and there were even copies of Smile slicks available, but the ones you noted above pretty much covered it. I may have missed one or two vinyl Smile albums that came out later that I'm forgetting, but I don't think so. Even those bootleg vinyl copies were transferred to CD's in the late 80's/early 90's until more material became available, then CD was the primary format.

Well, I bought the Second Edition so hopefully I'll be done.

But yeah, there seems to be two editions of the Vigotone variant - one with Brother Records labels, and one with blank labels.  I assume the later is a knockoff?

After the 2 "Brother Records" LPs (1983 & 1985) but before the 3-LP colored edition (1993 Vigotone) a 2-LP version was released. This 2-LP release (1991) was the 1st appearance on vinyl of the original “I Love to Say Da Da,” “I’m In Great Shape” aka “I Wanna Be Around” aka “The Workshop Song,” and “Barnyard”. This set has blank white labels. Here is the tracklist.

Side 1: Good Vibrations I * Good Vibrations II * Good Vibrations (Work Pieces) * Barnyard * With Me Tonight (early version)

Side 2: Can’t Wait Too Long * Wonderful * Holidays * Vegatables (including Mama Said) * Child is the Father to the Man

Side 3: Heroes and Villains * Do You Like Worms?/Bicycle Rider * Wind Chimes * Cabinessence * Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine * Our Prayer

Side 4: Tones * Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow (Fire) * George Fell Into His French Horn * Surf’s Up * Cool Water * You’re Welcome * Smile Promo Ad

How many of you here have the 3-lp colored vinyl SMiLE?

And did any of you get it from someone here on the board?

I got mine under the table from an indiscriminate retailer in New York City back in the 90's. I won't name names but they usually conducted business around Midnight.

Why are you so hung up on vinyl? Do you like the large covers? Like I said before, the only reason you would want to go backwards and obtain all the early pieces/variations/revisions of vintage Smile material that was available on vinyl 30+ years ago would be from a collector's standpoint. Are you going to play the records? They're not even 180 gram virgin vinyl! Otherwise, if you're not happy with what's been released and just have to have every fragment and morsel and crumb, either download it in Mp3 320 or FLAC and it will probably be in better quality than the snap crackle pop vinyl versions! All that vinyl stuff was de-clicked and carried over onto CD format and the sound quality was upgraded in most cases. The quality improved over time as closer generations to the masters or better sources were found.

Oooorrrr, find the original silver CD's and at second best CDR's made from those CD's! Good luck on finding the original CD's without expecting to shell out some $.

Bought mine from a local record shop in the early to mid nineties with the following proclamation on the front of the clear protective sleeve:

FULL COLOR SMILE POSTER
NEW IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY
3-COLOR VINYL
7 PAGE INSERT

Kerching... ;D

.......Crap.

Had no idea about the 1991 one.  Oh well.  Just spent a lot of money to get Vigotone and Second Edition, I can't do anymore.  My next purchase when I get money again is more than likely going to be hunting down "The New Album", which I've had zero luck with so far.

Got it as well. Bought it at a record fair in the mid 90ies.

Mine came from Discogs.  Someone from here pointed me to it - it confusingly was listed as a Brother Records release, rather than Vigotone.  (Fair enough, that's what the labels say.)

Here's a question....

Does anyone else's first edition Brother "Smile" LP sound ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY AWFUL in "Surf's Up"?

Seriously - most of the ending portion (listed separately, and wrongly, as "Child Is Father Of The Man") is a loud burst of static that sounds like a needle scraping across grooves!  Nearly knocked me off my chair! O_O

Well, it seems there were only two - the first one, which just had "Smile" and a mouth at the top; and the second one, which had the added text about "SECOND EDITION" next to the mouth.

On the whole, the record doesn't sound terrible, UNTIL it gets to "Surf's Up" and then it's so screechy and distorted I have to turn it off.  I even looked at the vinyl, it's not worn or anything.

Didn't happen to sell Records, did they, Mikie?  :) I guess they were too indiscriminate, because I think they got busted. Internet & mail order now, unless you want to go to the owner's apartment. Used to be a fun store to visit... if they happened to be open when you were there.

They pissed me off in the late 90's, Dick. I ordered a couple of Sea Of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters CD boots from them and they sent me CDR's! The F'ers. I couldn't believe it - I figured a good reputable record store that's playing the "middle man" selling bootlegs would send me the original silver CD's from the manufacturer! What they later told me is that they ran out of originals so they made CDR copies and put their own paper labels on 'em. Then they put them in CD shells with home made printed paper copies of the artwork. I guess they figured I would never notice the difference! Then when I called them on it, they admitted it and said they couldn't get any more originals and I couldn't get my money back! I know a lot of people would be perfectly happy to have CDR copies of the series, or even Mp3 copies, but at the time, these Sea Of Tunes collection had just started to come out, plus my other sources were sending me originals so I wanted them ALL to be originals. I wouldn't be surprised if they got busted because they played this game one too many times with the wrong people and they got pissed off and finked on them. They did have real good Beach Boys and Beatle collectibles at the time, though. But I never did business with them after that experience - I didn't care what goodies they had.

I remember that store well Mikie!  :)
I used to get great stuff from them. Just a quick walk from over Christopher St, and you were in collectors heaven. There was also that other store on 8th named after one of the Beatles albums.  ;)

Okay, I'll admit it - the collecting bug has bitten me.

I kinda do want to get my hands on that 1991 2-LP version now, mainly because I have the rest of them.  So, *cough* you know... :-P

I procured a couple of things (mail order) quite a few years ago from Revolver Records on 8th St. And there was another place in NYC called Bleecker Bob's that I got something from at auction once. Also on 5th - I think in Brooklyn there's a good one - it's where I got my Pet Sounds Sampler disc. There's another one in upper state New York that I got something from but I can't remember the name of it.

I'm curious.... the liner notes of "Smile Second Edition" promise a "Third Edition" to be released sometime in the late 80's.

I'm assuming this never happened?

That 1987 third edition was pressed in small numbers and is impossible to find these days. The only thing on it worthwhile was that section of Heroes And Villains that hasn't turned up anywhere else (including the 2011 SMiLE Sessions release) and Surf's Up Pt. 2

COUGH COUGH.  HINT HINT.  INBOX ME.  I'M IN O.C.D. HELL HAVING FOUR OUT OF THE FIVE. :-P

(Only an old, now-finished auction where it sold for $16.)

It's an epic masterpiece to be sure. I just KNEW you were talking about this track earlier when you mentioned "velvet pancakes". I've always found it frustrating that they edited out that small section that can only be found on the fourth edition of the "Brother Records" SMiLE boot LP. Had they not been busted when they were, we would have more than the three known copies that got out. Because I was friends with someone who grew up with someone who had a sister who was friends with a girl who's brother was in on the bust, I got a second generation cassette copy.

:)

That's the good pressing of it too.  Most of them you see around these days have the generic looking "Surfin' Records" label and those are terrible pressings.

I saw this in a record shop in Camden a few weeks ago:

2 LP set on white label and moderately priced at £10.

It's obviously a fan mix put to vinyl but I just thought it strange they would include, "George..." and the promo ad.

Now, on the one hand, I wouldn't dream of owning such an unofficial product consisting of tracks found elsewhere in superior quality, but, on the other hand, I felt to a duty to reprimand the shop owner and remind him that this record and several other similar products by bands I like would only encourage the public to demand more if they were seen in his shop.
