Title: Murry's Thoughts On Post-Pet Sounds Albums
Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on February 01, 2013, 11:47:30 PM
Is there any record of what Murry thought of their post-Pet Sounds albums?

I'd LOVE to hear his views on Smiley Smile! Can you imagine him sat listening to She's Goin' Bald when the sped-up vocals kick in....?

I imagine he'd have quite liked an album like Friends, but Surf's Up, Holland - have we any record of what he had to say about the albums during this period?

Since he did vocals on Be here in the Morning, I'd say he liked at least that song on the album.

He did?  I knew he had co-wrote "Breakaway" with Brian. Was not aware of this.

Yeah, story goes that since Mike Love was outta town (thank God) hanging out with the Maharishi and the most of the Beatles...Murry came in and did the bass vocals for the song...give it a listen or 2

Murry also did a great production for The Honeys, in the Friends era.

Didn't he offer the group a song of his sometime in the early 70s? Or was that made up for the BW "autobiography"? (Can't remember if I read it there or somewhere else.)

There was "Won't You Tell Me."

Which song was this, "Come To Me" (at Sunset)? The only other songs worked on in '68 (per bellagio) were "Tonight You Belong To Me" and "Goodnight My Love" (at both United and Wally Heider's), which as far as I know are Brian productions. Has "Come To Me" ever been released?

Yes, Come To Me is on The Honeys' Capitol Collectors Series disc. A splendid, bright, AM-radio, adult-contemporary sound.

I recall a magazine interview with Carl Wilson many years ago where he was asked about the Friends album, and my recollection is that he said something along the lines of 'Oh yeah, Friends was mostly Brian and our dad'.  That statement really surprised me at the time, although perhaps Murry did somehow influence the mellow vibe.  Anybody know of that interview, or am I misremembering what I read?  Also it's quite possible that if that's in fact what was written in article that the interviewer misunderstood and misquoted what Carl had said.

I think your thinkin' about "Lazzaloo" or something like that. I think Brian's and his last conversation, he asked Brian if the guys would record that song.

I'm still blown away that one of the songs on that album was written entirely by Al.

If Murry was so actively involved with the Friends album - to the extent that he actually sang vocals on it - how come this is never, ever mentioned in any of the books on the band, even the ones specifically cataloguing who did what on which songs. I'm doubting it's true, i'm just saying it's odd that it's never mentioned as i'd say it's rather a big deal and not something to be casually forgotten about when discussing the album.

Didnt Brian have something to do with it? Did he produce it?

Is it an album worth hunting down and buying? I've only seen the AllMusic review which didn't hold it in such high regards.

If you're a completist, it's a nice album to have.

Check out the song samples and decide: http://www.amazon.com/Moods-Murry-Wilson-digital-booklet/dp/B001KSRUEK/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_title_0 (http://www.amazon.com/Moods-Murry-Wilson-digital-booklet/dp/B001KSRUEK/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_title_0)

It's a fun, Nelson Riddle-esque album, but nothing besides 'Islands in the Sky' really stuck out at me.

So, to summarise, no-one knows what Murry's thoughts were on the post-Pet Sounds albums....

Ok, anyone know which Beach Boys songs were his personal favourites?

I recently posted this info in a different thread, but as a follow-up to my earlier post and question of 5 months ago in this thread, it turns out that Carl Wilson's comment on Murry's involvement in the Friends album was from an audio interview heard on the six hour radio special "The Beach Boys - The Best Summers of Our Lives", (written by Ken Barnes and narrated by Charlie Van Dyke and Wolfman Jack), which was originally broadcast on many US stations during Labor Day weekend in early September 1976.  The program featured interviews with every member of the band.

As the program got into discussing the Friends album Carl was interviewed and he stated, "The Friends album, Brian did that album mostly with my dad, and it was just a really easy project, and he enjoyed it.  My dad sang on that album."

I hope that's true. Bet that would've made Dennis secretly really happy.

Al's amazing, isn't he? I mean, none other than his song is featured on Murry's record (Didn't the latter dislike Al at some point?).
Also, the song could be arranged by whomever else, but the fact is the music's written by Al. So cool to know this about my favorite Beach Boy.
Btw, Italia is one of the best songs in the album. The accordion bit is beautiful! Liked & like the sound of that instrument.

I wonder if this was a way for Murry to atone for how he treated Al in the Help Me Rhonda sessions

If Al would have sung from his heart, we would have never heard "Italia."
