126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Perform SMiLE Songs Live? on: April 22, 2011, 02:28:52 AM
Re: Child is Father of the Man, there's a bootleg performance of Surf's Up from Amsterdam (I think) in the early 70s where they perform the chorus of CIFOTM virtually identical to how it is from the Smile sessions.  It's not performed like it is on the tag on the studio version of Surf's Up.

Possibly this is why Mikie is asking Jay if he has ever heard The Beach Boys perform Surf's Up live?

128  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Opinions on BWPS on: April 03, 2011, 09:48:36 PM
I do agree with those who prefer the live version.  As such, I listen to the Carnegie Hall recording (broadcast by NPR) more than the official BWPS.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4182988

There's a reason that BWPS has a score of 97 at metacritics (and is the highest-rated non-reissue).  Two words: THE MUSIC.  Let's face it.  The Smile songs are incredible, and the musicianship on BWPS is great.

It'll be interesting to see how the Beach Boys' Smile Sessions will do with on metacritics.  97 will be hard to beat.  Most here (including me) prefer the original tracks and the BBs' vocals, but the Sessions' incompleteness (at least compared with BWPS) will likely earn a few demerits from some critics.

How can I burn the Carnegie 2-parter at NPR onto CD?

I recommended downloading this, Don

I think he meant how can he rip the audio from the site.

I thought Brian did get antsy about Prayer being pulled out of the vaults, worked on and released?
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: April 01, 2011, 11:41:33 PM
..just thinking that the drugs might have not only helped Brian hear new sounds in his head but also give him something he never had before...Doubt.

His heavy useage of cannabis could easily have given him self doubt as well as a large dose of paranoia.
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys release will make you 'SMiLE' on: February 05, 2011, 10:50:29 PM
I read on the Steve Hoffman board that Alan Boyd had said that acetate(s) of missing Smile material did exist.  Is this someone putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5?  Or possibly thinking of the Durrie Parks acetates?

Am I the only one who can't believe the Durrie Parks acetates haven't been cataloged and transferred?

I hope this release happens.  When I did my own Smile mix I found that extended Abbey Rd type medleys seemed to be the best way to present a lot of the material.
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anyone fancy compiling a Van Dyke Parks best of? on: February 05, 2011, 07:12:41 PM
Gotta have San Francisco from Orange Crate Art on there surely?
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Deciphering \ on: February 04, 2011, 08:33:52 PM
HGS and the tag to the early H&V are musically the same idea, but it's an idea that runs through many Smile fragments.

I can't hear HGS ever being part of DYLW, or that one grew out of the other.  The two have a completely different feel to each other.

I thought Bicycle rider only became part of H&V when the single mix was produced.  I thought originally it was never intended to be part of H&V.
134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Special moment that got you hooked to the Beach Boys music... on: January 30, 2011, 06:24:26 PM
I was channel surfing late one night and stumbled on a documentary about Brian Wilson.  What was being said intrigued me, then they showed the Surf's Up performance from Inside Pop.  The song blew my mind.  I'd known about the Beach Boys before, and loved Good Vibrations, but hearing Surf's Up really converted me.
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Another Smile Mix on: January 25, 2011, 02:55:13 PM
Lovely stuff ! On parts 1 & 2 there's a couple of moments of Smile recordings I've not heard, little sections of Barnyard and Holidays to name two of them. Good to use the "proper" version of GV as well.

Thanks very much for the kind words Smiley  I'm really pleased everyone is enjoying this mix so much.

Which bits in particular hadn't you heard before?

This is the best site I've found for keeping YT vids:

http://keepvid.com/

Part two and three are just loading to YT now.  Before any Smile purists say anything, I was not going for a completion of Smile circa 1967.  Think of this more as what if they'd released it in 1970.  This will become clear when you look at the full track list:

Welcome
Heroes and Villains Part One (Brian Wilson's Cantina mix)
Do You Like Worms (my own edit conforming pretty much with the 2004 Roll Plymouth Rock)
Surf's Up (my own mix conforming to the Surf's Up album arrangement but with full Brian Wilson vocal and full backing harmonies)
I'm in Great Shape/Barnyard/Old Master Painter/You Were My Sunshine (Brian Wilson demo vocals synched to IIGS and Barnyard)
With Me Tonight (my own edit using Smile recording of WMT with alternative take of H&V intro and alt take of Eat A Lot)
Heroes and Villains Part Two(my own edit using various H&V bits, another alt take of H&V intro, bicycle rider theme etc..)
Wonderful
Look (AKA I Ran)
Cabin Essence
Holidays
Prayer (Smile original, not 20/20 overdub)
Good Vibrations
Elements I - Fire (Mrs O'Leary's Cow)
Elements II - Earth (Vege-Table) (using I've got a big bag of vegetables radio add and Smile era Vege-Table)
Elements III - Wind (Windchimes) (my own edit using Windchimes tag and Smile era Windchimes)
Elements IV - Water (My own edit using piano outro of windchimes, water chant and parts of Wild Honey Cool Cool Water and alt take of Love to say Dada)
Diamond Head (From Friends album, it fits so well, what with the thunderstorm (amp/spring reverb) intro plus it gets you to Hawaii)
He Gives Speeches
Child Is Father of the Man (my own edit, not happy with this one)
Love to say Dada

The idea behind IIGS/Barnyard/OMP/YWMS/WMT was to cover an entire day.  IIGS = waking up in the morning, Barnyard being work in the morning, OMP work in the afternoon and YWMS being the end of the day and WMT being night time.  So it's a Barnyard/mid west suite to compliment the Elements suite.

Links coming as soon as they're loaded

People have been Mentioning if it will be available elsewhere.....

YOU TUBE has just rejected parts two and three for being too long, even though individually they're shorter than part one  Huh
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Another Smile Mix on: January 23, 2011, 10:45:21 PM
Yeah, I've noticed a lot of Smile stuff disappearing.  I reckon it's only a matter of time before this gets pulled.  I might have a chat to Warnakey about alternatives.

Should read...Yet Another Smile Mix. Roll Eyes

Cheesy That's what I very nearly named the thread.  No offense taken at all.

Wow!  Bring on the boxed set! Or a download-able version. Love it!

There should be no doubt as to "completion..."  Wink

Thanks.  I should have the rest of it up soon.  The idea behind this mix is the bicycle rider idea of traveling from Plymouth Rock to Hawaii.  A lot of the tracks I've constructed myself from the various modular sections.  I was particularly happy with H&V PtII and With Me Tonight.  I've never heard anyone else synch the demo of I'm In Great Shape to the backing track either (though I'm sure someone else has).  Synching the full backing harmonies to Surf's Up (with full Brian Wilson vocal) was a particular highlight of putting it together.

Isn't Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry a big fan of Pet Sounds and beyond?  ISTR reading that Keith Moon was a big fan too.

This may seem like a dumb question, but what exactly is the "pretty part" of Rhapsody in Blue?

The slow middle section.

My Smile mix goes like this:

SIDE ONE:

Your Welcome
Heroes and Villains Part One
Do You Like Worms?
Surf's Up
I'm In Great Shape/Barnyard/Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine
With Me Tonight/Do A Lot
Heroes and Villains Part Two
Wonderful
Look
Cabin Essence
Holidays

SIDE TWO:

Our Prayer
Good Vibrations
The Elements Part One (Fire)
The Elements Part Two (Earth)
The Elements Part Three (Wind)
The Elements Part Four (Water)
Diamond Head
He Gives Speeches
Child is Father of the Man
Love To Say Da Da
Can't Wait Too Long

I know that Diamond Head is not part of Smile, but it fits so well and wasn't Smile supposed to be partly a journey from Plymouth Rock to Diamond Head?  I've never been sure about Can't Wait Too Long, but again, it fits very well.  I'm not really going for purity here, what I can gather is that Smile was and is fluid.

H&V part one is the alternative version from the Wild Honey twofer (the Cantina version).  H&V part two is my own mix using the oh gee, a few of the heroes and villains sections (the acapella one and one of the more upbeat ones) along with the bicycle rider theme (the instrumental version, not the section from Do You Like Worms) and H&V chorus, ending the same was as the 2004 H&V, though at the end of prelude to fade is the solo trombone H&V riff.  Surf's Up uses the purple chick mix as the basis, though I added Carl's harmony line for 'canvas the town and brush the backdrop' from the album version (there's a vocal only mix doing the rounds) and the full harmonies for the domino part of columnated ruins.  I'm in Great Shape, I synched the piano demo to the Smile backing track, same with Barnyard.  With me Tonight/Do A Lot use the Smile recordings of these songs, and Do A Lot is taken from the Heroes and Villains sessions, not the one recorded for Vegetables.  I also use an early take of the Fire intro (similar to Bag of tricks) in this section.  The elements is pretty much straight, though I do use the Vegetables radio promo (You can't have these vegetables, I spent a lot of time on the weekend growing these) to start the earth section.  Child is Father of the Man uses several takes edited together.

It's very hard to describe the various sections, the main point to this mix was to try and create a narrative to flow through the entire piece, the most obvious one being the idea of a bicycle rider going from Plymouth Rock to Diamond Head.  Each song or section is part of the journey, which is why Surf's Up is soon in the mix.  I've always felt Surf's Up was about an old decadent East Coast city, which seemed the perfect starting place for the journey.  Also, I spent a lot of time checking tempos and keys of the various sections, looking for clues as to how they fit together.  Our Prayer for example has never seemed like it was supposed to be followed by H&V, whereas Your Welcome is in exactly the same key.  Our Prayer seems to work the best in front of Good Vibrations (being major/minor of the same key).  Nearly all sections run into each other or cross fade between, giving each 'side' a seamless run.

Of course, I feel bound to say this is all hypothetical and what I would do if I had a stack of Smile bootlegs of course Wink

149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW BB Piano sound on: September 04, 2009, 07:52:58 PM
Interesting, thanks for the replies.  I figured from the sound that it was an upright.  Being slightly out of tune would explain the vague chorus like effect I was hearing.  I've wondered if a lot of compression was used on the piano (like the Bee Gees used on their early albums, particularly I've Gotta Get  A Message).
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BW BB Piano sound on: September 04, 2009, 12:35:05 AM
That piano sound from the mid to late 60s, like on The Wild Honey album (Let the Wind Blow) - how did he get that piano sound?  It sounds like some sort of effect has been applied to it, but I can't for the life of me think what it is.  It's such a distinctive sound (and no, I'm not thinking of a tack piano).

Does anyone know?
