Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What Happened with Brian and the Band after Friends?
|

They still made good albums after Friends! 20/20 , Sunflower , Surf's Up, Holland and Love You are all good!!! And Friends wasn't the last BW album, he was very much involved with Sunflower and Love You; maybe not so much on 20/20, Surf's Up and Holland (sept Sailor & Funky Pretty),,, By the mid 70s it didn't even matter anyway- all bands have their issues and especially a super-group like the Beach Boys. I don't get why I always see people bitching bout their struggles and Brian going crazy or whatever, who the f*** cares?? The important thing bout them is their astonishing legacy and phenomenal body of music. The mid 70s onward belonged to the Ramones and the re-emergence of rock n' roll thru punk; and the Ramones owe everything to the Beach Boys. Even though the Beach Boys after Love You you didn't make another landmark album it doesn't matter!!! No group in history has made as many great records, not even the goshdarn Beatles, I don't care what anyone says.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How would the band of done under Bruce's Direction

Creatively the Beach Boys were done by that time anyway. LA Light and KTSA are very hit&miss, overall very weak albums compared to anything before em. Its been said before and I concur that Love You was the last great album they made. In the early 60s, and late 60s/early 70s Bruce was great but as far as producing the BBs and his '77 solo album are fuckin lame.

To anyone who's seen "Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story" I'm sure you've seen the Brian Wilson references: 1) Studio orchestration (Wrecking Crew reference) 2) Goat in the studio, and changing musical direction (Pet Sounds/Smile reference) 3) Theremin mentioning (Good Vibrations reference) 4) Seclusion & alienating himself from the mainstream & society 5) Drug use (especially LSD) 6) Returning to the limelight in 1976 7) Regretting unfinished biz with his dad... Tantrums & erratic behavior 9) Nervous breakdown and feeling out of touch with the world- 10) Getting sober and healthy 11) Making a rap song (Wipeout & Smart Girls reference) 12) Receiving achievement awards and getting due credit anything anyone else wanna add?

I dunno who banned her but that is really fucking stupid. She's a real chick, I've chatted with her several times and she's cool. Why would you ban Dennis Wilson's youngest kid from a board paying tribute to him? Makes no sense..............................

I don't see why Smiley Smile would be compared to Party; I mean Party was a "live- in the studio" record with cover songs and previous released songs, it wasn't a new studio product. I think Smiley Smile was great for what it was/is, even if it was recorded in one or few sessions I wouldn't liken it to Party. Also remember the pressure record companies put on groups at that time to get records out, from '63 thru '67 the Beach Boys were putting out more than an album a year; I wouldn't say it was rushed but I'm sure they did have some pressure to get a record out considering that it was well over a year since Pet Sounds and they needed a full-length to back Good Vibrations.

I've been a Beach Boys fan for 20 of my almost 26 years. Goes back to kindergarten when I heard Good Vibrations or Surfin Safari on the radio, either one. I was only 6 years old and didn't know that much about discographies so I would get whatever CD or cassette I could get my hands on. The first CD I owned was Endless Summer, and the first LP I owned was Little Deuce Coupe. From that moment on I spent my childhood into my 20s collecting everything I could. First concert I ever went to was them when I was a kid before Carl died, and now I've seen them several times in different variations. I have every LP, CD, and I'm workin' on the 45s. When I was 17 I was inspired (by Dennis) to pick up the drums and I been goin' since. I've been a devout punk rocker for a decade and I always latch on the bands and artists that draw some kind of Beach Boys influence or sound. Their music will forever be a huge impact on my daily life.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jim Morrison and the Beach Boys
|

The one I can think of is a piece of audio I have on an October 1967 KHJ aircheck tape where Jim Morrison is reading an ad for "Cheetah" magazine which featured an article on Brian Wilson. It's not Jim's own words - he's reading ad copy and it sounds like he just woke up and someone gave him the words to read. I think Brian Wilson's music was an influence across the board especially when it was new in the 60's. Brian was known around the musician circles for making great sounding records, and whether a few negative quotes from people like Hendrix have been reprinted through the years, Brian had most everyone's ears and respect who was making music in the 60's, and that would have included The Doors. Of course Morrison was a Beach Boys fan, anyone in there right mind is. And as far as Hendrix goes, he was referring to the fact that Dick Dale was ill in the hospital at the time, hence "you'll never hear surf music again..." Hendrix's 2 biggest influences were Chuck Berry and Dick Dale.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Ups & Downs of the Beach Boys commercial success-
|
on: May 09, 2011, 05:04:16 AM

I was jus thinkin bout how the Beach Boys success came and went in waves; They had their golden era or whatever you wanna call it from '62 through '67; then somewhat of a commercial slump in the US in the late 60s but were huge in the UK; put out a lot of great records in the late 60s/early 70s that didn't get the attention they deserved; got huge again in the mid 70s and then later on even though they continued to release albums they were really weak for the most part and their success pretty much relied on their nostalgic appeal...

God I think it would horrible if they recorded some new music. Unless it comes out as "The Beach Geezers" it should either be Brian featuring Mike or Mike featuring Brian. Or Al or whatever that guy's name is. But uh. Yeah. No more Beach Boys, please. To me they died with Dennis. And it really kind of seems like Brian hasn't wanted to be a Beach Boy since the mid-60s. hahahahah Beach Geezers hahahah ; it's just a trippy thing to think about; I mean I think most fans can agree that they haven't recorded anything substantial in decades and if they were to come together and record something "new" I highly doubt it would have any lasting value. The Beach Boys need to be remembered as the greatest American rock band, the epitome of pop perfection and the mythical personification of the California lifestyle etc. Not as an "oldies band" or whatever horseshit they get pigeonholed into a lot nowadays.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Where is rock n' roll today???

I grew up listening to stations like k-earth 101, 99.9 kola and k-best 95; that was my exposure to rock n' roll as a child; but nowadays they never play any 50s-60s rock. It's always late 60s, 70s and even 80s?!? You rarely ever hear a Beach Boys song, pretty much hardly ever any Jan & Dean, Dion, Frankie Valli or any of the other real rock n roll. fuckin lame!

f*** yeah the Beach Boys should be #1! But I would say the Beach Boys would make more sense in a rock n roll poll rather than pop. I mean they were pop in the sense that its popular music, but whatever.... People are fucking lame of course theyre gonna vote for lame sh*t, BEACH BOYS #1!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Anyone seen Chuck Berry lately?
|
on: April 07, 2011, 09:07:47 AM

I just recently saw Chubby Checker and Chuck Berry at Pala Casino and lemme tell you Chubby was phenomenal, but Chuck on the other hand.... I realize he's 84 years old and is the founding father of rock n' roll but the man needs to give it a rest. It was an honor to see him and I'm glad I did but it was a sad site to see. Anyone who's seem him recently or in recent years can relate to this I'm sure-

1 Carl 2 Brian 3 Dennis 4 mike 5 Al
My opinion.
You put Al on the bottom, are you serious? Al has always sounded great and still does; Carl was always the strongest vocalist always. Brian and Dennis were good through the mid 70s, Bruce has always sounded decent, and Mike well.... Age has definitely phased him but he still pretty much has the same nasally voice for the most part.

Are the black bars where you'll be putting images of the BBs?
The black bars are the logo of Black Flag, another legendary punk band. You consider the BBs a punk band? or is that in reference to the ramonees? No, but I hear them get called that a lot when "I Get Around" is involved. The Beach Boys weren't punk just because they had a few energetic rock 'n' roll songs, or because they influenced punk bands like the Ramones, the Queers and the Travoltas. Punk is raw, dirty, stripped down, rebellious, aggressive, bratty, opinionated... The Beach Boys were none of these things - or at least their music wasn't. Whenever I'm listening to music it's usually either The Beach Boys or punk rock, and to me personally these two always felt like exact opposites. But maybe that's just me. I advise anyone and everyone who's a Beach Boys fan to listen to the Queers and Travoltas if they haven't already; 'specially these Queers albums- "Don't Back Down", "Punk Rock Confidential", "Pleasant Screams" and "Munki Brain"; as well as the Travoltas' "Teenbeat", "Modern World", and "Endless Summer". Great records!!!
