Wasn't this interview taken at the point where Dennis could have been the star and frontman of the group? 2 out of the 3 songs they performed were sung by him.

One his recent solo single, to boot.
Dennis being the frontman would have been borderline insane as the 70's wore on.... I'm not sure why he didn't seize the moment when he injured his hand and thus couldn't play drums.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Probably something to do with some guy named Mike....
Maybe not though.

Despite his brash exterior, concert reviews bear out the fact that Dennis was always more at ease behind the drums than up front. When he sang a few numbers at 1970 and 71 shows he often asked for near darkness or didn't emote properly or seemed ill at ease-he wasn't a natural frontman-though he sure had talent

The Criterion Collection's 2-DVD version is a "must buy" for any DW fan. The movie itself has never looked better, and there is a wealth of extras, including extensive interviews w/ James Taylor and the director Monte Hellman.

BTW, Monte Hellman's first movie in a couple of decades, "Road to Nowhere," is now on limited release:
