Title: Where are you from?
Post by: mikeyj on April 18, 2007, 06:57:01 AM
I am just interested in the demographics of Beach Boys nuts on this board. What country is everyone from (ie: where do you currently live?) and also where were you born? I would just like to see how many different nationalities of people there is who are Beach Boys nuts on this board. I would guess that MOST are from Western Europe and America but Im still interested to hear where everyones from

Haha, well...I actually live in Arlington, but I say 'Dallas' because that's about the only thing people recognize. We here in Arlington say that 'Arlen' or whatever is based on us (since there is no REAL Arlen). We even have an 'Arlen Hotel' or something like that in old downtown. We're pathetic.

I grew up in Wr. Neudorf, Austria called "Heart of Europe"  :quote, but since 11 years I live in Baden, only 3 minutes away from the hospital where I was born.  :)
We are known that we have one of the biggest casinos in Europe, famous people like Beethoven or some emperors spent their holidays here.

Baden is only an hour away from the capital Vienna where Brian and Al are performing this summer at the opera.   :happydance

Born in upstate NY, in an area often referred to as the "North Country" because its the farthest north and most isolated area of New York State. Born in a town called Ticonderoga, grew up in and around Port Henry, NY, now going to college in Plattsburgh, NY. The only real benefits of living where I am (not counting the natural elements like lakes and mountains, forests, etc.) are being close to Montreal and Burlington, VT (where the band Phish is from). But since I don't have a car I can't get to Burlington or Montreal, and that sucks. It also gets wayyyyyy too cold in the winter. Would love to get me some of that California Feelin'.

Born in "the rottenrow" Glasgow, Scotland, Dec '77.   That's Scotland. Part of the UK along with England.

Brought up in Cumbernauld where they made the movie Gregory's Girl. Have lived in Glasgow for past ten years. Officialy the most dismal town in Scotland.

From southern Indiana, a few miles from the Ohio River. Since then have lived in northern Dutchess County, NY; Louisville, Kentucky; Lexington, Kentucky; Louisville again for a time; then in the Montery, California area for five years in the '90s (though I never crossed paths with Al - I only drove through Big Sur once, late one evening) and since then, the Maryland suburbs of DC.

I regret that in my haste (and while involved in some family matters, as I noted in some previous posts) I "dictated" a message to my phone and then failed to proofread it; I have since modified the text. Please pardon my error. My zeal for our fellowship exceeded my time and attention in composition. I'm sure Mikie was just being funny, and he was right to chide me, affectionately I assume, for my errors. (I have not mastered that microphone function),

However, of course the correct question is not "did you graduate" but "were you graduated?" And, for those curious, I was, along with Obama himself, on May 15, 1983.

Happy New Year to all. Let's hope for some good BB news ASAP.

If memory serves, also Alholio71, Wild-Honey, Quzi, William Bowe, WWDWD? & maybe TonyW.
Good topic, btw. Enjoyed knowing about who is from where.

Yes your memory serves you well :)   Born in Fremantle Western Australia (best city in Aus IMO) and still live here, though I lived far north west aus in a mining town called Karratha for 7 years and Melbourne for 3.

I am from Coventry, United Kingdom, a city with a long and rich history but unfortunately it is now an utter sh*t-hole. Famous Coventrians include Frank Whittle who invented the jet engine and the Cat Bin Lady.

Originally posted this some five years ago, but just to underscore why I found JR's comment that I'd be cheering on Mike & Bruce in SeaWorld so hugely amusing (but what else would you expect from a graduate of the Fallon School of Charm & Deportment ?)...

I live in southern England, in the Surrey/Hampshire border country, where men are men and sheep are nervous.

I am from Sweden. Who would have thought.

The Wilsons and Love have Swedish ancestry (mentioned by Mike in his infamous Grammy Awards speech) and their Swedish ancestors came from a soldier thorpe about an hour away from where I live. Been in that area many, many times and I watched Mike and Bruce play there in 2010.

Soldier Adolf Fredrik Carlsson Ståhl (Ståhl = Swedish word for steel, a typical name for a soldier) and his wife Christina Lovisa Adolfsdotter gave birth to Charles Sthole in Kansas and he married a Swedish girl, Maria Sofia Pettersson from Illinois, and their daughter Edith married Buddy Wilson, Murry Wilson's father.

Johan Alfred Grön (Grön = Swedish word for green), brother of Adolf Fredrik Carlsson Ståhl. Bears a straight resemblance to Brian Wilson (poster's opinion). Picture from around 1870-1880 (poster's guesstimation).

Murry Wilson is the father of Brian, Dennis and Carl.

Awkwardly, I forgot to post my own bit of the whereabouts info. I have tons of distant relatives living at various places of Russia & not so many - cousins & cousinettes (aka close relatives). My favorite site is not where I'm from, it's a boring townlet - (The) White Mountain(s) is (not sure about the translation). Though I never been there, only saw it on Google Maps, kind of.

Born in DC, lived in Virginia most of my life and living in Connecticut for two years.

And attending school in New York now.

Just thought I'd put in some family history. Family originally from Cambodia, both my parents grew up during the Khmer Rouge and immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. I don't know anything about my father but my mother and her family settled in Connecticut. She graduated from high school and attended college. Both my parents have been living in the US for about over ten years when they met and she moved to Washington DC with him when they married. The rest of my family from my mother's side are all over mainly the east coast, mostly in Connecticut.

Upstate New York-Champlain Valley/Adirondack Mountains...      I live in a small sort-of "redneck" town that just happens to be centrally located to a lot of nicer, more "happening" (and more expensive!) places. Lake George, Saratoga Springs, Albany, Plattsburgh, Lake Placid/Saranac Lake, (all in NY) Burlington VT, and Montreal are all within a 2 hour drive.

I interpret it as where did you grow up, rather than where you were born. My daughter, for example, was born in Arizona but spent a total of 4 months there, so I don't think she'd say she's "from" Arizona.

But, I was born in NJ.

It's best that Davis takes time to heal - the Pelicans aren't going anywhere playoff wise anyway.
Having the hardest time warming up to the name 'Pelicans' for the basketball team , as for many years that was the name of our Southern Association professional baseball team.
Now 'Jazz' - that was a name I could warm up to. Went to their games back in the 70s, cheering on the exploits of Pistol Pete. Still bummed that Utah - UTAH- calls itself the Jazz now.
Not much to cheer about, sports wise. Now music wise, that's another story altogether. The next 1 1/2 months will be positively music heaven!

Suddenly I'm interested in this thread. The Pistol! An absolute magician. People talk about him and Curry because of the shooting range, but his flair was a precursor to Rubio's. Such a monumental figure in basketball history. He's one of the many guys who seems somehow not to have realized his potential, but that's actually more the rule than the exception. He was so, so good. The highlight reels show it all. A genius. Granted, I'm a sucker for guys who see the court on another level--Pistol, Magic, Bird, McKey, Kukoc, Bodiroga, Nash, Odom, Rubio--guys who aren't necessarily the best players, but who see the court in that way. But yeah: Pistol. Fantastic.

I think Lamar Odom is one of the 10 most gifted players of the past 20 years. Obviously there were issues along the way, but he was absolutely a genius. Brilliant basketball mind, and fun for anyone who knows basketball to watch.

Philly ... yikes. On a positive note, the assets are building. Dario Saric is a STUD, and actually has the kind of sense we're talking about. He's really good. Noel, obviously, is good. Okafor has his skills. Ish Smith is almost a cartoonish legend, albeit for providing a bare minimum of NBA ability at that spot. But most importantly, Brett Brown is a great coach. That they're even remotely close to competitive is a testament to him and his staff these past few years. They need to use their assets to balance out the roster talent this offseason, and they'll be back in it. And frankly, it doesn't take more than a player or two in this league. (As a Minnesotan enjoying the fruits of KAT and Wiggins, I can say that.)

If Joel Embiid is actually healthy (so many contrasting reports) this offseason then I think Okafor is gone. I personally want us to draft Ingram over Simmons even with Saric coming over. Saric feels like a sixth man type, sorta cross between Ginobli and how Mirotic was im his first season (fingers crossed). I love to watch the Wolves, Towns is an absolute stud, what do you think will happen with Dieng?

Totally not a professional sports watcher, but I strangely have frequent "brush with fame" experiences with basketball players - once at an event for Bill Bradley (for whom I interned and worked side-by-side with Carl Lewis' little brother every day), I parked Wilt Chamberlin's sports car - a Lamborghini or something, I was 17, no idea - he had some sort of custom seat thing that was really low. I had to pull it waaay up then kind of perch to see out the windshield. I was so scared I would crash. Then I briefly babysat Bill Walton's kids. Then I sat next to Robert Parish in the theater -  he was the biggest seeming person I've ever seen. Then I was on a plane when my daughter was about three going to see my mom in Arizona; my daughter was restless and started roaming the aisles. When she roamed into first class, I went up to get her. She was standing there yammering at Steve Nash.

Yes, I was able to see Pete Maravich throughout his career with the Jazz. He was absolutely incredible. The best individual performance I ever saw was on February 25, 1977, when the Pistol did a basketball clinic against the Knicks, scoring 68 points ( and back then the NBA didn't have the 3 point shot). You can see this game on YouTube. He was a troubled soul, but fortunately found peace in the last few years of his life and was an incredible human being, gone way too soon.

Oh, BTW, since grade school I've wanted to visit New Zealand. Looks like such a neat place!

Wow you got to see Maravich?!! That's awesome! What do you think about the Curry-Pistol Pete comparisons? Was Pete a wizard??

Yes, I was able to see Pete Maravich throughout his career with the Jazz. He was absolutely incredible.
