My least fave would have to be.... "Student Demonstration Time". By Beach Boys standards it rocks, but ultimately it's just a cover song on an album of amazing originals.

SDT--then I vote for Disney Girls until it dies--which, sadly, will probably be about 6 rounds or so--truthfully I should vote for Disney Girls as I consistently skip it, while I don't with SDT, but SDT is s weaker track and thus it garners my vote

I'll buck the trend, and say

A Day in the Life of a Tree

There is an interesting concept trying to break out there, but I can't make it past the droning vocal and just don't enjoy listening to it.

While neither are my favorites, I can live with Student Demonstration Time (I actually like the unexpected shift in tone of the album), and even Feet is OK despite the groaning lyrics... kinda sounds like it could be a snappy kids song from a 70s episode of Sesame Street or Electric Company.

I've never understood all the hate for TALOYF. Did Al write it, or co-write it with Brian? I'm not sure but it certainly sounds very Brian to me and fits right in with all those humour songs he wrote in the early 70s - H.E.L.P, Games Two Can Play, Good Time etc. The production is great too with all those crazy sounds. Isn't there a good Desper story about Brian getting right into the recording of Feet and getting up on the roof and crunching stuff or maybe I imagined all that?

Anyway, a no-brainier for me: Student Demonstration Time. I skip it every time.

All because of Jack.  It's a great song but his delivery means I have to be in the exact right mood to enjoy it which isn't something I would say about ANY of the other tracks.

Brian and Al wrote it together (with Gary Winfrey), but I'm pretty sure it was Al's song before it was Brian's.
Also, I think the "roof" story was told by Al.

I don't skip any tracks when I listen to this album, which is often.  Played MiC disc #6 and Sunflower last night.  I love the "Don't Go Near The Water" backing track, and will be hard to bonk that one when the time comes.  But, that's not tonight.
My Maxwell's taking out:
.
"Take A Load Off Yer' Foot, Pete"  My favorite part of this one is Brian's opening line.  It's hard to bonk any of them really.

Long Promised Road undoubtedly has some of the worst verse lyrics I've ever heard. "...so hard to laugh a childlike giggle when the tears start to torture my mind"? "..so hard to lift the jewelled sceptre when the weight turns the smile to a frown"? Seriously? These comically overwrought lyrics are just plain awkward to listen to. In fact, the entire narrative sounds heavily laboured; it's the anti-thesis of one of the greatest strengths of the Beach Boys in that direct human emotion has been compromised in favour of promoting high-school imagery in an exercise to be deemed "cool and deep" by pseudo-intellectuals. It's transparent, tacky and smells of desperation. I will say that the instrumentation of the bridge is competent, unfortunately, I really struggle getting past the banality of the chorus to give it the attention it deserves.

I felt the same way for a long time but I've learned to accept the BB's lyrical incompetence. Very few of their songs after Smile have what most would consider "good" lyrics.

Seriously compare their lyrics in that era (or any era) to those of their contemporaries. It's like they completely lacked taste. Just listen to Add Some Music To Your Day. I love that song musically, but the lyrics are bad, bad, bad.

If you've learned to accept the Beach Boy's lyrical incompitance, then how come you can't accept in your opinion Dennis's severe lyrical incompitance?

Seriously compare their lyrics in that era (or any era) to those of their contemporaries. It's like they completely lacked taste. Just listen to Add Some Music To Your Day. I love that song musically, but the lyrics are bad, bad, bad.

If you've learned to accept the Beach Boy's lyrical incompitance, then how come you can't accept in your opinion Dennis's severe lyrical incompitance?

Reread my earlier comments. Dennis's lyrics have a completely different tone than Brian's or anyone else in the band, and I frankly don't like them.

Personal opinion and all, but the fact that people are voting for ADITLOAT, Long Promised Road or Feel Flows - Feel Flows - rather than Feet or Don't Go Near the Water is - to me - incomprehensible!

Agreed. It did take me a while to get used to the song, as it was sung by Jack Reilly, but now I think it's definitely one of the better songs off Surf's Up. Those who are voting off ADITLOAT likely doesn't get it. Same for the brilliant Long Promised Road and Feel Flows

Before I knew a whole lot about Brian's history, I had always assumed this was the debut of his cracked voice (not knowing that was still 3-4 years to the future). I was actually surprised when I learned it wasn't Brian.  :lol

You are correct pixletwin.  The lyric sheet gave no mention to vocal credits.  The group wasn't getting any press, other than to say the track "Surf's Up" was to be included.  That was The Big Hype Line...another track from the (even then) legendary SMiLE sessions.  Every record they did was hyped with that by-line except Friends.  That got no promotion.  I thought it could be Brian, using a lower register.  Maybe they thought it would create interest not to say.  You would have had to have seen the TV special to remember what "Surf's Up" was, and that was awhile ago then.  Jack came out of nowhere as well, who was this new writer the boys had brought in?  I don't remember anybody saying he was their new manager either.  After the record came out there was mention of the ecology angle.  These were the days right after the California oil spill that more or less began the movement.  And those Riots Mike was singing about.  Real Riots where folks were not backing down.  Putting their lives on the line in the face of Ronnie's Bullsh*t, "If they want blood, I'll see to it they get some."  What "Don't Go Near The Water" was about, I've never thought those lyrics were silly.  The Environmental Protection Agency was created by folks writing just such "silly" songs.  Anything to make people aware.   Pre-internet  info on many artists was lacking, the Press was powerful, Print was powerful.  Even rags like Rolling Stone were just getting started.  Most of the "Teen" pulp was still focused on what color their eyes were.  Artists like the Beach Boys and CSN&Y were looking them right between the eyes.  They were Blood Red and Shouting to be heard.  In every way this album was very special to me at the time it was released.  Sunflower got little respect.  Surf's Up Did.  It was also Carl's finest stand up until this point.

I guess I'm the only one, but I find "Feel Flows" long, boring, and pointless.  "Don't Go Near the Water" isn't great, but I like the harmony on the coda, and "Feet" is kind of quirky and amusing.  Neither rank very highly for me, but I like them better than "Feel Flows."

Sorry for the tally delay folks.  :'(

Quote
Surf's Up is the seventeenth studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on August 30, 1971 on Brother Records and Reprise. The album was released to more public anticipation than the Beach Boys had previously had for several years. The album's title is taken from the song of the same title written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks for the abandoned studio album, Smile.

Welcome back to the a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  ;D).... and without further ado...

I don't think a song has ever been voted off with so many votes (32). Does that mean it's the most hated song in BB history?  :lol

Had to bump this to the next page.  Hope it saves "Lookin' At Tomorrow" for awhile.  Mar Beat has some other Great stuff, check out his channel.  Including Fisher & Brooker's "Ghost Train" and videos he put together for a couple of Mike and Dean tracks.

My vote to Bonk:
"Disney Girls (1957)"
.
This will be the track I'm sticking with until it's gone - unless I need to try to save something.  Garfunkel did this vocal so much better.  He considers it to be the thirteenth best, on his list of 134 solo tracks.  I listened to Surf's Up last week-end to try to understand how ADITLOAT could possibly be getting votes this early in the game.  Couldn't, you guys are Nuts! I absolutely love every one of the remaining songs, but going to reluctantly say Lookin' At Tomorrow, despite that bit towards the end when the chiming organ comes in always - always - making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Arguably Al's finest moment.

Looking at Tomorrow has its existence justified through that prog rock version they did in the eighties(!), it rocks and is just so unexpected for a life band that had really fallen into the trappings of nostalgia.

Not as close as you might think. DG-16 vs LaT-21

I can quite honestly say that every one of these remaining tracks is either a masterpiece or as close to a masterpiece as it's possible for a song to be without actually being one.

Disney Girls is perfect, but hey gotta vote for something...

Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #21: Surf's Up
Post by: pixletwin on February 21, 2014, 01:05:06 PM
Boggles my mind that a person can vote off the majestic A Day in the Life of a Tree. It deserves to be in the final 3. One of the greatest outros and wonderfully (subconsciously?) introspective songs Brian ever wrote. You would vote that off before "Fantasy world and disney girls, I'm coming back". I know the words were by Jack Reiley, but damn if it didn't inspire something wonderful and sad inside Brian.

Disney Girls. Completely out of tune with the remaining album and it's drossy, just so Bruce can remind the listener who composed it.

I never really got into this one, primarily because I think Jack sounds terrible and I'm not really into lyrics - I've always been about the music and the melody first.  Had this been performed by the band in a glorious multi-part harmony in the classic BB style, I'd love it.

They're honestly all good tracks.  I think for me it's between the Carl songs and A Day in the Life of a Tree.  I'll go with Long Promised Road just slightly.

Such a powerful album.  Most everyone is picking their least favorite Carl track to bonk.  Too bad.  Glad they got this far.  By this point Carl's vocals bled soul.  The lyrics, all of Jack's lyrics on this, reflect my life in the early 70's, just starting out on my own.  All of my votes have been to help get both of Carl's tracks to the finals.  This has been the toughest Round so far.
.
But, I do have a favorite Carl track on Surf's Up.  And it's not:
"Feel Flows"

So here we are. The FINAL ROUND of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR #21!!! Vote for the song that floats your boat, that gives you goosies, or that you find yourself enjoying the most out of what is left.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!

Tally on March 1st!!!

Feel Flows
Til I Die
Surf's Up

Round#1 - Student Demonstration Time February 13
Round#2 - Take a Load Off Your Feet February 17
Round#3 - Don't Go Near the Water February 19
Round#4 - Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song) February 21
Round#5 - Disney Girls (1957) February 23
Round#6 - A Day in the Life of a Tree February 25
Round#7 - Long Promised Road February 27

Feel Flows is good. Not Carl at his best (I think Long Promised Road is a better song). Definitely nowhere near the other two songs.

Surf's Up, I love. Brian's best song. But the SMiLE version already won out (and I do prefer that one to the 1971 version)...

So my favorite (which is A Day in the Life of a Tree, but since that's gone) is definitely - hands down - 'Til I Die. These lyrics, written by Brian, are among the finest in the Beach Boys canon. As fine as anything Van Dyke/Reiley/Love ever wrote. And that is saying A LOT!

This would be a difficult call if it were a version of Surf's Up with Brian on the lead the whole way through, but Carl's lead vocal always struck me as a little indifferent.  Thus, I choose:

Til I Die.  One of the best Beach Boys songs ever.  Nothing on this album even comes close.

Surf's up

About time someone else sang its praises.  Eric, there's only a handful of us sane around these parts. Have people forgotten that this was the first released version, and that it came only four years after the Smile sessions fell apart? It's damn-near contemporaneous and is still the most gorgeous piece of music committed to vinyl by anyone, anywhere, any time. I'm resigned to Til I Die walking away with the prize and for many voters it'll be on the spurious reason that a version of Surf's Up – the wrong version, cobbled together 44 years after the event – has already had a top slot.

I wouldn't go so far as to try to persuade people to change their votes, but if anyone wanted to change their vote now I wouldn't think any less of them and wouldn't hold their earlier misguided opinion against them.  We can't all be right all the time.  Well, you can't all be right all the time.

Regardless of which version, Surf's Up has already won (rightfully) anyway. Do you guys honestly want the same song to win two Survivor Rounds? I say you guys should just be happy that song has already won

If it was the same song it would have been omitted from the second poll, just as the repeated tracks on early Capitol albums were omitted from those polls. Carl nailed it in both performance and co-production terms. It's bliss, whereas the Brian lead doesn't quite do it for me.

On that note, should That Same Song be omitted from the 15 Big Ones poll, as it is That Same Song and not another version? I think we should be told… :lol

I'm not upset…

just murderous…

I don't care that another version won in an earlier round.  I also don't think that the fact that this was released earlier makes it any better.  I just think that Carl's lead is only technically pretty on this song and lacks, for lack of a better word, soul.  That would be true even if it were the only release version, but the fact that we have several versions now with Brian's lead vocal providing precisely what is absent from Carl's vocal only makes it more obvious.  Even if it were a different version of "Surf's Up," I'm not sure whether I would choose it over "Til I Die," but given this choice, it's quite easy for me.

All of which is to say, I'm not changing my vote.

I much prefer the finished version to the Smile version, I just think that 'Till I Die is the better song. It's bleak and yet somehow life affirming. Brian never wrote a better song IMO.

I voted for Till I Die too but I don't agree it's the better song. Surf's Up is a swan on an album of ducklings - I just decided to vote for my favourite duckling

I think I prefer Brian's lead too. Brian's voice always had a bit more of an "edge" than Carl's. Objectively speaking, I think that the 2011 version might be the best one.

But still, the 1971 version of 'Surf's Up' is and will always be the definitive one for me. That's the version that has the history. That's the 'Surf's Up' that people have been listening to for 43 years. You can't just replace that by something that was assembled on a computer three years ago.

I agree - it's a lame reason to vote for "'Til I Die."
If people think that "Surf's Up" is a better song, then they should vote for it regardless if another version already won.
I voted for "'Til I Die" because I like it more.

Surf's Up    8)

Both songs are fantastic, but Surf's Up is unique like no other song. I'd vote for it on any album.

Til I Die for the win.

As for Surfs Up everyone has a favorite mix of that song. I heard the Smile sessions first so that is my
favorite, but no matter to me SU won previously

Til I Die is a true overlooked masterpiece -- expecting it to contend with the heavyweights in the "Last Round"

My biggest beef with the 1971 version of SU is the darn organ. It obscures the beauty of the original 1967 session musician's playing. That and Carl's singing doesn't  quite carry the emotional drive of the song to where it needed to be.

IMO of course.  ;D

Til I Die. Sorry Surf's Up you've already won before. Brian's vocal on on the 1st movement of Surf's Up is better than Carl's.

Surf's Up

All great songs and while I put the title track (with Brian's lead) on Smile, add additional songs to this album, and call it Landlocked, the directions couldn't be simpler:  VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!

I don't know why everyone has to make these things complicated.  Just answer the question(s) honestly.  ::)

I think it fills it out a little. Adds a bit of sheen.

The track would feel even more out of place without it. It feels sonically like an extension of Feel Flows, LPR, and Til I Die because of that organ sound.

True. The organ kind of adopts it into the familial sound texture of the other songs. But taken out of that context, to my ears, it muddies the production.

You're right. These people who're voting for their second favourite track because Surf's Up won an earlier vote need to ask themselves what they'll do at the next election - vote Republican because your favourite Democrats won last time? It's so fair it's almost admirable! :lol

Love them both, but Til I Die is so powerful and poignant. It says so much with so little. I've listened to it, along with God Only Knows, more than any other song.

Most people who have voted for TID and mentioned surfs up have done so stating that they prefer Brian's vocals to carls. How exactly does that make Surfs Up their true favorite track?

WELCOME TO THE END OF ROUND #21 of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR!!!!

2 Smilers had to Feel the Flow against the much stronger currents.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

I suppose the right song won. But if WIBNTLA made it to Surf's Up, I would have voted for that to win.

I might as well say it now. This was the single hardest Survivor round so far. All the previous rounds were a piece of cake compared to this. Anyone else agree?

Not surprised to see 'Til I Die win. The title of "best track on [insert album title here]" becomes rather interchangeable when songs as great as Surf's Up, Feel Flows and 'Til I Die are competing.

I think choosing between This Whole World, Forever and All I Wanna Do will be much harder. (Which will almost certainly be the final Sunflower songs based on current trends)

Not for me. Forever easily gets my vote. Though if a miracle happens and All I Wanna Do gets voted off instead of Slip On Through, I'll vote for Slip On Through instead!
