Title: 2,000 different Beach Boys Cds!
Post by: beachboys_fr on February 14, 2014, 03:44:33 AM
This morning, the postman brought me the 2,000th Beach Boys CD of my collection. I want to take this special occasion to thank all the people on this forum that helped me to enlarge this collection by a mean or another.

If you have any question about Beach Boys CDs, just don’t hesitate. I would be pleased to answer (in the limit of my competence).

Is it possible to hear a 30 second snippet of each cd?

What is different on your WIBNTLA( from the MIC), and can you please play/post it here?

I already answered on the topic devoted to this track.

I have now MIC in hands. After having carefully heard WIBNTLA, here is what I’m able to say when comparing this version to "mine". Both are the SAME version (structure, instruments, etc.). The sound is however quite different. In "my version", some instruments are less emphasized (for example, the guitar between 2.34 and 2.58 or the flute around 4.07) and some vocals are more emphasized (for example, the backing vocals between 2.34 and 2.58 and the lead vocal after 3.38).  I think "my version" is a rough (mono) mix.

So when are you going to post it so we can hear the differences?

I asked him for it via pm (after MiC came out) and it seemed like that wasn't something that was going to happen  :(

Maybe if you offered to trade him 30 CDs he doesn't have, he'd send you a 30 second snippet

How many CD's in his collection came from fans wanting a snippet I wonder...

Not many, I'm guessing… though I'm also guessing few will 'fess up!

I'd love to see a photo of them!
How many in % would you say actually have unique music/versions on them as opposed as reissues/editions/etc?

I would love to read a list of what you have. That's a heck of a lot of CD's for one band. Like, woah, when you think about it. I second a pic, as well! I'd love to see this. Nothing like a juicy collection.

I will try to post a picture soon. Regarding your question, it is impossible to give an accurate answer without heavy computations... I would say about 50 (without bootlegs). So, 2.5%

Assume this includes multiple versions of the same release? EG, I have maybe three copies of Beach Boys Classic Selected by Brian Wilson, all with the same tracklist but very slightly different packaging…

Have you A-B'ed them all for any differences? (or should that be A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J-K-L-M-N'ed them?)

I don't know exactly what you mean. I have a list and on this list, the CDs are filed according to big categories: Albums, Christmas, Compilations, Promo, Singles, Bootlegs Live, etc.

By "A-B" I mean have you compared the music on each, to check for any differences? Is the USA edition of TWGMTR's copy of Summer's Gone exactly the same as the Taiwanese version's Summer's Gone, for example?

Ah, no I don't. My ears are not accurate enough to ear these (possible) differences... Remember how it was difficult for me to describe WIBNTLA...

What about BBs-related stuff – solo CDs, Wilson Phillips, solo and group appearances on other artists' albums (such as Richard Ashcroft, Elton John, Jeff Foxworthy…) - do they figure in the 2000CDs?

Tell you what John , that's a good and rather sobering thought - I don't want to count them all , but my BB's/Related CD collection must be close to 1,000 ( Christ I must have around 15 + different CD's of the Christmas Album from all over the planet , don't know why I have them but that's what I/we DO  ::) )

That's part of the motive behind my question Rob… if you include associated stuff, I'm in a similar position!

I previously asked mr french and he only collects BBs CDs; not solo stuff, not various artist, nothing but BBs.
240 copies of Pet Sounds , in every variation, from every country?  That's probably there....

No solos, no various artists compilations, no tributes, no CDRs. “The Beach Boys” must be stated on the front cover of the CD as the unique artist. For example, “Salute to Nascar” or the Japanese compilation “I can hear music” (which includes lead vocals by Carl only) are not part of the collection. Same for the numerous Beach Boys with Jan & Dean CDs. All of this is debatable but I think that delimitated a perimeter is a crucial step for building a collection.

No. As I know, the TSS box was the same with and without the surfboard. There exists a "light-up box" but I don't have it.

Are you nuts?  The point of collecting is having the cool stuff you collect. Playing just tends to ruin the value, especially if you have to open a sealed copy to do that!

To each his own I guess. I just don't know if having the Taiwanese version of Still Cruisin' would really fulfill me in any way. I personally do like collecting to an extent. I like having different mixes and versions and whatnot. But of course, it's actually the music in that case. Not just the packaging.

I love it!  I thought I was a collector!  I have sealed stuff I don't play.  I know what the music sounds like and I love the fact that it's like picking the stuff up in a record shop.  I often just go in take out my lps, look at them and put them back. An expensive luxury I guess but at least I don't blow my money on other stuff that doesn't hold value or is gone the next morning and all I'd have is a sore head :-D

I know you sometimes take a fair amount of abuse here, but that is one very nice looking collection!  I am a bit jealous.  Ha Ha...
And my wife thinks I have a problem with too much BB/BW stuff.

I'd love to see some more high res photos just admire it a bit further!

I have some prized CDs like Pet Sounds Audio Fidelity and some Pastmasters so yeah I love collecting those too.  I've still not opened some of the 2012 reissues as well but probably will at some point.
