Hey all! I'm excited that there's been some interest in "e-collaborating" on more tunes like our Add Some Music cover (check out this thread (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,13801.0.html) if you don't know what I'm talking about). I think it's a good idea at this point to get a "show of hands" to see who all would like to join in and what you'd like to contribute.  Specifically, let us know what instruments you can record, what vocal range you're most comfortable singing in, and if you'd like to take a crack at arranging/producing a track (or tracks).  If you're in, let us know and I'll add you to the roster.

As for song choice, we're going to try to keep it interesting and unique. We're going for obscure tracks that aren't covered often, or, at the very least, unique takes on better known/more frequently covered tracks. Let us know what song(s) you think would fit the bill, and we'll divvy up parts and and assign arranger/producers once we've got a good tracklist.  If you're really dying to sing lead or arrange/produce a certain song yourself, let us know that too, and it can be tentatively reserved for you; however, the goal at this stage is really just to nail down the list of performers, arranger/producers, and songs. It'll be easier to distribute things evenly once those three pieces are set.

Here's the method we used for Add Some Music: I put together a really basic backing track with just piano and a beat, so everyone would have something to sing on top of.  Then I transcribed everyone's vocal parts separately with a great free program called MuseScore (http://www.musescore.org). You can export MuseScore charts to midi files, so I laid the midi file for each background vocal on top of the backing track so everyone could hear how their part is supposed to be sung.  (Alternatively, I could have just sung a guide vocal and sent it to everyone--that might be easier for you arranger/producers (it's tough making noise with a new baby in the house!)) Then, everyone recorded their parts and sent them each in individual files, which I pieced together as I got them.  I worked on the "real" backing track at the same time.

I would be more than happy to take the same kind of role in these songs.  If you need help figuring out chords, vocals, etc., that's become a bit of a specialty for me. Even if you're going to do a totally unique arrangement of a song, I can still put together rough backing tracks for folks to sing over--all you need to tell me is what tempo you want, whether you're going to stray from the original chords or do anything else quirky that I should know, and if you want the song to fade out vs. end on a chord vs. end on a hard stop. Basically, I will gladly be a resource for anything anyone needs to make their song work.

Just a few basic ground rules:

(1) To keep things fair, you can only claim a lead vocal if you're willing to sing a background vocal on other people's "lead" songs too.
(2) Record your parts in a lossless format.
(3) Send your parts to your producer completely dry--no effects, no EQ, no noise reduction, etc.  That will make mixing a thousand times easier.

I play all instruments, and I can sing any part except the surf's up lead :D

Vocally, I'm most comfortable in the range of Brian's in the early 70s. I'm actually a high tenor/low alto, but this is the range I'm most comfortable in. Lead/backup, doesn't matter.

I would love to be involved - can't read charts though. I'll leave it to the pros :)

Assuming we're putting together a compilation of tracks: I really like the idea of having a different producer for each one, although I think we should also have an executive producer who's overseeing things.

Also: this is a very minor detail, but in addition to the participation rule, it'd be useful to specify a basic technical requirement (lossless files, no effects -- that kind of thing) for the actual files submitted, that way we get the most professional(ish) quality possible.

I'm good with mixing a song, I'd love to do SNJ, as I've stated one too many times :D

Don't let that stop you! Almost all notation software nowadays can play back the parts for you, so you can memorize it by ear. I haven't read charts in a long time, so for me hearing it made everything ten times easier.

I hate reading music, since I have pitched hearing I can hear and remember the parts. You don't need any prior knowledge besides the song and how to sing! haha

I've been told I have a pretty good falsetto, if that comes in handy.... (meaning, I'm more suited to a Brian type part than a Dennis one).

Consider me right up for this! What would be very cool is if we tried to either keep it in the obscure side of the discography, or at least try and rearrange the more well-known tunes so they're a little more, well, us.

In terms of instruments, I'm a bit of alright on guitar and other things of that nature - banjo is my latest crush at the moment. Piano is very BW like, which is to say POUNDING CHORDS  ;D

I also think my biggest strength is arranging instrumentals/producing, so I'd like to do the heavy lifting on some of that. Do any of us have a real drumkit? Would be immensely helpful.

My voice is a fickle instrument - I smoke too much, so it's a little raspy up high but I still have a pretty good low tone (not quite stable enough for intricate bass parts, if being hyper critical). Might fit a Dennis type role in the mix.

I can't really ready music, but have a hell of an ear. Helps out a lot when listening to the BB's songs and figuring out who sings what backup parts :)

I have a real drumkit. Not the best set up for recording it, but I can certainly give it a shot.

That is a fantastic cover of add some music guys. Bravo! I do sing also and depending on time, I wouldn't mind possibly joining in!

I've got a kit (mahogany shells, booming kick drum and a birch snare -- good for those big in-the-pocket drum sounds) and about ten good drum mics, so I'd be happy to contribute anything in that department.

My lone attempt at recording/mixing live drums was for this cover of Guess I'm Dumb ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7jFl3ug0Ls)- I was trying to go for a 60s sound rather than a professional one, but I bet your set up will be much better for this type of recording - cheers!

That's seriously one of my favorite covers ever. I can't stand the original, but I listen to this version of 'Guess I'm Dumb' quite frequently!

totally agreed on all counts. if nobody objects, I'd be glad to fill an executive producer role. (judging from TWGMTR, "exec producer" means "one who demand the inclusion of 1 lousy/mediocre song for every 2 good ones," right?)


Austin and I have had the same conversation about what tunes to pick.. I don't know that we need to hear another straight cover of Wouldn't It Be Nice, but a truly unique WIBN arrangement, or any cover of Steamboat/Time To Get Alone/Soulful Old Man Sunshine, would be welcome additions. A problem I run into here is that I know the discography so well, I don't really know what's considered obscure  :lol


thanks! sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but I take it you're actually a girl? I think it'd be great to add a female voice (or voices) to the mix. there are some songs/spots where it'd be cool to have a female lead.. like the chorus of Don't Worry Baby, since it's the guy quoting the girl.

I've been grooving on Break Away for a few weeks now, so that was my idea--unless anyone else has any cool ideas for it, I'd like to take a crack at the arrangement/production for that one.  I'd also like to try This Whole World, but won't add it to the list just yet until we get some more suggestions.

By the way, I love the In Blue Hawaii idea--could be crazy challenging, but would sound amazing if we can pull it off.  I've made some decent headway into IBH for my SMiLE cover project, and have recorded the water chant.  I'll send it your way later today--maybe we can use it as a guide for everyone. I've got the chords handy too (unless you want to mix them up), and can play ukulele on it if you want to keep the Hawaiian feel. I played around a bit with adding the "cool cool water" vocals over the verse, with mixed results.. it's a few keys higher (or lower? I forget), so they don't fit as naturally. Could be worth changing the key to fit, if you'd like to try that. Just some ideas--it's your song, so feel free to ignore them!

That was another one I tossed around, actually--good one to spread the vocals around. I've done it and I know dmcguire has too, so the vocal lines are already transcribed.  If we sing on top of the 20/20 version, we'll be good timing-wise.  I'm all for it.

Totally agree with IWTS--another great "stacked vocal" track that could sound really nice "unplugged." Do you want to handle producing that one?

I'd like to do the heavy lifting on Break Away, if that's okay with everyone. For that one (and probably as another general rule for this project), I think it might be better to have one person sing the same part throughout if we're doing multiple leads--like Billy C on both verses and EgoHanger on both choruses (or vice versa). There's more logic to the division of work that way, and it won't feel like we're splitting parts up just for the sake of doing it. (I've got some fairly fresh strong opinions on that issue because I don't like the way Brian and Mike trade off leads on Isn't It Time--it's too "Hey look everyone, Brian's on this track AND Mike's on it too! Reunion!!!!1" for me.)  Really, I think we should divide leads the same way they're divided on the original recordings to keep it from becoming "A does the first verse, B does the first chorus, C does the second verse, D does the second chorus, E does the bridge...". What do you guys think?

I like the idea of 'Til I Die for sure. I've already transcribed the parts so I can hand them off to whoever wants to produce. I'm a little more iffy about TWGMTR and In My Room since they're less on the obscure side than we're going for--unless you (or anyone else) have a good idea for a unique arrangement, of course! As far tunes from TWGMTR go, I bet FTTBA could be cool.

@Egon: I feel your logic - although I guess for a Smiley Smile board project I think it would be less offensive to switch off leads than an actual BB record. Although I'm not quite sure I can pull off the choruses to Break Away - can't wail like Carl! - but the verse lead presents no problem for me. Anyway, I guess we'll figure it out as we go along. I don't mind giving up a lead part for that one (or any song), a group effort is a group effort.

@Billy: Yeah, if we decide to split up verses, I could totally dig that!

ps. are we allowed to do unreleased material? Something like "Stevie", a great song which has never been officially released, and sounds horrid when it appears on unofficial releases, could actually be given a "definitive" version by us. Just a thought.

Yeah, in my room isn't obscure or anything but just how the three voices come in would give some smilers an awesome chance to harmonize a legendary song. I'd love to send in some Breakaway verse excerpts.

Yeah, I don't mean to say that we should only split leads the way the Boys did--we even took some liberties with the division in Add Some Music. My hope is that we can spread around the leads over the project as a whole enough that we don't need to do it as much within songs (unless it's a song that calls for it). That said, I'm definitely not opposed to different folks handling different sections (even in songs that originally only have one lead) as long as it's good for the song.

I guess the way it would work is for everyone to pick a track, and work up/delegate a rough instrumental thing for the vocal contributions.

Like, 12 tunes? We shouldn't exclude the likes of In My Room, that's not what I meant - rather, we shouldn't be emulating BW's arrangements too solidly for this. Like he says, no soundalike copies of anything. That'd be pointless!

An idea I just had. You know where it goes all "Child Is The Father...." with the same drumbeat and horn? We could do the "child...child..ch-child" vocals over that part. Since we aren't going for straight note-for-note similarities, it might be a cool addition. Only an idea - what do you guys think?

1) 100% yes on SOMS. I've fiddled around with that one before and have picked apart the intro vocals ("Soulful Old Man Sunshine" and the "doot doot doot"/"ba ba ba"-type parts), so I'll gladly finish figuring out the rest!

2) I think you're completely right about the way we go forward with it. I'm going to update the main post with each song's arranger/producer (to the extent the song's been claimed), and that person can work on delegating vocals and getting a track ready. The backing track doesn't need to be even close to ready before we do vocal parts--not even a single part from my Add Some Music rough track made it onto the final version.


I'd like to try out Carl's "na na na" vocals too.  And I think doing a CIFOTM coda could sould cool, though I'm not sure when would be the best time to include it, since the song actually ends on a major-key variation of that part. "Lit-tle bird up in a tree, looked down and sang a song to me" is the CIFOTM section, but the outro's "Little bird looked down, and sang a so-ong, to me" wouldn't quite fit the "child" vocals. Thoughts?

Count me in as well. I'm a professional singer here in NYC, and have performed much in Orlando, and some regional stuff too. While I was in Orlando, I was a member of an 8 part a cappella group at Disney called Voice of Liberty. YouTube them to hear some amazing arrangements of Americana type songs.

My range is from low G up to a high A, and I have a strong falsetto as well.

I've been playing piano since I was 6 (27 now), and I also play guitar, ukulele, and some simple bass. I do accordion, but do not have one. I also graduated college with a vocal degree, so I can read music, and I'm pretty good with sight singing as well.

I would love to sing lead on anything you'd like, but really, I'd be willing to help out in anyway possible. This is some cool stuff!

It would be cool to work in some little unique CIFOTM parts in there too, as that end section is rather sparse vocally.

I'm going to try to work in a variation of the major(ish)-key intro from Smile Sessions version of CIFOTM. I haven't written it down yet, but it sounds cool in my head!

Hey guys, Id love to get involved and add some vocals (lead and backing). As for my voice, Im not really sure where it lies but Id say I have a fairly wide range. Hello people! I'd like to get involved as well! My voice has trouble transitioning from Middle-High, but I can manage with it, but overall, I can sing very well, with a rather strange accent that I have. (I have lived half my life in PA, and another half in SC) I can also Harmonize well, but cannot play any instruments so I'd only be useful with my voice!

Also, I would like to do producing of a few songs.

RE Shunshine, just slowing it down a bunch and changing the instrumental arrangement - there's no chance in hell I can improve on the original track by using the same feel, but if one of you can do a bossa type shuffle on the drums I'd be in business. The vocal arrangement would still work with it, I think, so that would be cracking, Egon! Will whack up a rough demo tomorrow if I have time, to demonstrate. Think you'd rock on it, Seltaeb  ;D

Absolutely! One thing on DWB.. I mentioned earlier in the thread, but SurferGirl7 volunteered to sing and I think it would be cool to have her sing on the chorus (since it's basically quoting the girl). Perhaps a harmony duet?

Maybe dmc could do the verses (which are sung from Brian's perspective) and SG7 could do the choruses (which are sung from Brian's girlfriend's perspective)???

Love the Surf's Up guitar riff! So there will be 5 main backing parts for Little Bird.. Going down the stack I have EgoHanger on top, then seltaeb, me, ___, and ____, with My Brother Woody on leads with seltaeb on the "what a day, what a day.." line.  Is that right? Who wants the two bottom parts? (full disclosure: there's not a ton to do on them.)

I haven't had a chance to work up the CIFOTM part yet, but there'll be a lot of extra vocal parts for that section.. at least another part for the 5 background vocalists, maybe more.

Excellent, Id love to have a go at it. The track is great, see what you mean about the later dennis feel. How should we proceed? Do you have a guide vocal with it so I know where to come in etc? I dont have much of a recording set up at the moment, I run protools 7.3.1 on an old laptop which is why I didnt offer to add any instruments however I got a good condenser mic for vocals and just need to find a sweet spot to record in this new apartment I moved into.

That track rocks, Mike! You could even keep the percussion relatively slight.... Wish the fade was a bit longer, mind  :)

Seriously, we shouldn't be aiming to recreate BW productions/arrangements specifically! After all, your Little Bird doesn't and it's the better for it. That would render it pointless. I really think this song suits that laid back vibe, especially if you try singing along to it in a really relaxed way. Try it!

I've been tinkering with so many variations on Break Away, I can't decide which one I want to go with. I wanted to do one with some really complex riffs built around the main chords, but I'm currently really grooving on a version in the style of Long Promised Road--mellow verse, rocking chorus, trippy bridge.  That might be the one I land on.

Maybe lay down a couple and we can do a group vote!

There's nothing within my ability that can be done to remove the buzzing.  If you find that parts of it are unusable, you may have to cut/paste tom fills that don't have any buzzing in their place.  :-\


..... or for the fills with buzz you can delete the left channel and use the right channel only. (of course, you'll have to pan it differently and boost the volume)

I can play (and own) guitars (strat, tele, folk, 12strings etc), bass (danelectro longhorn and bass VI). Though I'm not a virtuoso on these, I can also play (and own) drums (original 1967 Black Oyster Pearl), piano (vintage 1908 Gaveau), ukulele, mandolin.

I can sing in the mid range and also falsetto. For now I didn't take the time to read the full thread, but the begining of it sounds promising !

I think the "what a day, what a day...." vocals need a bit of a softer touch. The drumming is excellent, I'm not much for the sound of them either, but hey, I'm not the producer!  ;D

I'm going to add more reverb to them in the next mix, and Im still experimenting with some vocal lines, that line is the real kicker right now... I'm thinking of doing a more Carl-styled vocal there now.

sounding good Mike, If I could make one suggestion (which of course you can ignore if you wish) Id try get your vocal to double mine exactly on the word "day" at the end of this line "If I keep singing he´ll come back someday" - What I mean is the little nuance that Dennis does on the "day" word. Its kinda like day-a-hey but not quite.

It's not obvious at all, I just notice such things. One of my pet peeves about double tracked vocals is that I like them centered, or at least not split up, because you kinda lose the intention of meshing the two tracks together to create a fuller vocal sound - but the way that you did it was really tasteful and served to make a better mix all around.

Ahh, yeah I agree man. Originally I had them panned center but somehow they ended up about 30% to the left & right. Still enough to give it that "double tracked" sound. I can only pan stuff out fully if it's tracked 2x on each side. And even then I only go to about 75% each way.

1) I didn't EQ or add any reverb. Didn't wanna mess with the blend you're gonna create. Therefore, it comes in bright and dry.

2)When mixing down and saving, somehow the silence got edited so it starts with my vocal - hope it's easy for you to drop it in where it needs to be. If not, I can try to save it again with the long gap of silence intact.

Personally, Amusement Parks USA is not one of my faves at all, but I'll sing ANYTHING! :) Actually, it might be cool to give it a full on Brian circa-60s lead, as opposed to the way Mike sings about half on the original. Not that there's anything wrong with his lead, he's great. I think that old saying applies here, make a track and I shall sing!

Agreed. I'm also hearing an off key note in the harmonies now. I think they were cool as they were. A bass part isn't necessary either. I actually tried it originally but it felt like I was just doing it to "do it". Didn't really add anything to the arrangement.

I do have some 'lead' guitar on there which I think fits the bill, but I'm having trouble getting that kind of definition on the bass! Any ideas how to do that, I'm recording it direct into my soundcard as my bass amp is beat up and it would be too distorted. That is epic and beautiful at the same time. You got the Pet Sounds bass at the beginning. I kind of lost that style (in the bass) as the song went on, but still, really really great job.

Fantastic! The only thing I can even think of adding instrument wise is the French Horn after the line "Can't remember what we fought about".

Yup! It took a little bit of adjusting the delay time but i found between 140-180 works best

I fell off the face of the earth for a while, but I'm finally getting some free time back and am psyched to work on this one.  This track and the vocals sound incredible! hypehat, did you use a click track for this? if so, how many bpms?

Okay, I just did a rough sketch of the Soulful Old Man Sunshine scat vocals, and there are at least 8 different parts going in this tune (possibly more in the "SOMS" break). So far we've got me, EgoHanger, and seltaeb. Who else is in?

Yeah, that's no problem--it'll be a little more work for the singers (no copying and pasting the repeated parts), but there honestly aren't many repeated lines in that tune.

Happy to help out! I've been itching to work on SOMS for years. I've written out the parts for the intro/break and the scatting vocals already, and just need to do the background vox for the bridge.  It's nuts, the song consistently has 6 to 8 voices (triple tracked at some points) at any given time.

Come to think of it, it may take me a little while to get the guide vocals distributed out to everyone. In the past I've used a midi vocal line laid on top of the real track as the guide, but that'll be tough without the steady bpm to work with. No big deal--I'll figure something out.

Couple questions: do you want the intro to have the vocals on top of the music, or would a slower acapella intro like the original be okay? I didn't get the vocal from you, no - I've done some remixing on the track and even put the bass on (finally!) so it's ready once Egon can dish out the parts!

One thing I meant to ask - is there something up with my Stevie vocal? On the 'come and get a little bit closer' line it goes a bit funny, wondered if you did some editing on it. I can re-record that line if necessary!

Seltaeb also sent me his SOMS vocal, which I need to mix on the track (which I also remixed, Egon has the backing track for his vox). Let me do my work and I'll fix that tonight.

I'll have a look at the KMB track, never did get around to touching that up thanks to scores and things. Thanks for reminding me... Think it's just touching up the strings and working on getting bass definition/fixing those bum chords on the acoustic.

We'll finish this yet! Reckon it's time someone did another track....

It seems simpler than most other Pet Sounds tracks, and I want that Mike Lead!

Sounds good to me, IMO that has the best BB Backing vox outside of DYLW.

It is also the funkiest song on Pet Sounds. I'm game, although I've produced two tracks already so someone else must step up to the plate!

Listening back, you're probably right re: reverb - I think I just went with my go-to set up, which obviously wouldn't sound as decent on your voice as we're different people! I kinda rushed that one.

I feel like since we already added all of the other flute parts throughout the song, it feels a little empty there.

Going from the bridge into the final verse, it could use a little change, whereas now it feels like its the same thing plodding along. Losing the flute and going back into vocals creates a nice production effect.

But hey, if I'm outvoted, I'm outvoted  8)

Feeling the urge to do another track.... the question is, what?

One cracking idea I had, and I can't remember whether I mentioned it, is for each of us do a section of Heroes & Villains (let's say, the BWPS/TSS sequence, and we've already got Prayer, so Gee/Verse/Chorus/Cantina/Children and Sunny Down Snuff/Prelude to Fade - there are 6 of us, right?) each, then link them together in a fine homage to 'modular' recording. Anyone game? Points given to how nuts you can make your own section.

Then, go, you crazy cats. One ground rule I think we have to follow is, go as different as you like (and I'd really like you to all go crazy, don't worry about it being exactly as long as the single, if you want to turn the cantina into a country ballad be my guest), but keep it all in the original key. Or at least, finish in the original key.

I have an idea for the verse, so I might pre-emptively claim that. If someone else really wants it, I'll happily take something else, or they can have the second verse.
