Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian and Mike on The O'Reilly Factor

For as little of an interview that there actually was (there were mostly video clips), I think O'Reilly's interviewing style is good for Mike and especially Brian. O'Reilly is a big fan, he's aggressive, and he uses humor. But most of all, I got the feeling that Brian respects him. I would love to see a lengthy B. O'Reilly/B. Wilson interview.
Oh, BTW, I know this isn't the right thread, but did I hear Brian Wilson refer to Mike Love as a conceptual genius? Mike Love is a genius per Brian Wilson. I know some people like to "use" different videos and interviews to make their point, so, let's not forget this one.
I think we should discuss what a "conceptual genius" is. I would think it's that Mike is really good at what likes to write about, the concept of girls, surf, fun, love, and Brian thinks he's a genius at that.

But they had such a profound impact on culture and society, it is impossible to say they are overrated. If one doesn't like their music, fair enough. But whether one likes it or not, the incredible impact it has cannot be ignored.
I think there is, I agree with everything you said, thats why I yhink they were the best band ever, but allmusic.com thinks every single album by them cept yellow sub and let it be are perfecr 5/5 albums. And I just dont think thats true, sometimes their average music (to me) is overrated because of who they are. Which is normal

Can't believe there's so much Beatles hate out here....you all know it's ok to love more than one band, right?
I love the Beach Boys, and count Brian Wilson and his writing/arranging as a significant part of my life, but there are some days when my love for the Beatles outweighs even that. That doesn't make me less of Beach Boys fan, it just means sometimes the Beatles music speaks more to me. Sometimes it doesn't. Life/Art isn't black and white...join me in living in the grey, won't you? It's much more interesting.
And you do know its ok to just not be a beatles fan right? (not that im one of those). Of course. But then there are those that call them overrated... Heh, well im the weirdo that thinks theyre objectively the best band ever but still overrated lol.

Anybody else try to figure what Brian's singing in the background near the end of the song? Sounds like "Some night- With you I hold tight- Some night- I won't hide- Hold Tight- With you I won't hide....." I dunno. It's sung so quick and buried in the mix so low that I'm having trouble deciphering it.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm asking a couple of posts above. Thank you.. I was about to starting to think I'm hearing voices.. What I can decipher: "Some??? keep you warm now" ?? "Something? let's go home now" "Some??? ? ? ? ? ? ? warmer" ?? "Some??? to our home now" "Some??? ? ? ? ? ? ? now" I'm pretty sure about "let's go home now" and "to our home now", but the rest could be anything. Any "dog hears" out there? No, I've been straining to figure this out since I got the cd. Can't do it. Also, Foskett sounds great on this, the only guy "in the group" that could pull this off. Clearly written with Carl n mind and the first few times I heard this all I could think was what could have been. Now I just accept this for wht it is, which is a great song. If you want someone who DOES sound like Carl, his son Justyn is your guy, though... I posted the lyrics like five posts up.

what's to dislike aboout "Wendy"?
and I don't really see much similarity between "God Only Knows" and "Our Sweet Love" other than they are both gorgeous ballads
eh, they're just both kinda built around a steady piano chord progression, and similar pace. The song just never hit me as anything special. And that part in our sweet love where the guitar plays the melody, hum that melody to yourself, and then hum "i may not always love you" melody; they do have a similar rhythm.

And yet again, a fine example of "Beatle envy," as I like to call it...of course, what's not taken into account is that part of the reason the Beatles have a longer chart span is that here in the USA they weren't around as long, not even catching the public's attention until December 1963. I wonder if the same will hold true when Giles Martin's secret Beatles project comes out...
There should also be a phrase for beatles fans on youtube who think the understood greatest band in history need constant defending

Girls on the Beach would be a decent song if it wasn't for the fact that Brian already wrote that song before, it's called Surfer Girl.
That's like saying Brian already wrote Pet Sounds, it's called Today!. I disagree, I think "girls on the beach" is to "surfer girl" as "our sweet love" is to "god only knows". Slightly forced attempts to recapture a type of tune. That said, i think girls on the beach pulls it off better than our sweet love did. I don't get the "Brian was obviously trying to cop an older song" accusations, especially in the case of "Our Sweet Love". Did anyone aside from bigger fans give a shi t about "God Only Knows" until Jesus McCartney said it was his favorite song 20 or 30 years ago? I don't think it was a huge hit or anything, so why bother trying to "recapture" it? If you're a songwriter, you know you're gonna write a song or two that's remarkably similar to another one at some point. Some choose to discard them, some choose to recognize that both songs have their merits and their place and release both. I'm a fan of folks who choose to do the latter. it was number 2 in the UK right? Well then i take back that it was attempts, but it still sounds like a lesser version to me. This was one of my first thoughts when I heard it, just not a fan.

What's Brian singing in those syncopated background vocals at the end of "Shelter"?
i posted this in another thread. I skipped a couple, but you get the gist i think. Also i think he may say "moonlight" instead of "sunlight" sometimes I hear: (jeff: i'll give shelter through the night) "sunlight" "keep you warm" "sunlight" "from the storm" (mike: do you ever still think of me) "sunlight" "yes i will" (and the way that we used to be) "you know i will" (do you think that you'd ever stay) "yes i will" (take a page out of yesterday) "you know i will" (we'll find a way) "keep you warm" more or less.

He didn't say it was the end of their career, he said something along the lines of it being the last instance of Brian being 100%. Or, more dramatically and prior to clarification, I think he said it was the "last Brian Wilson song" or something similar at first. The amount of misquoting 'round here is scary sometimes :O
yeah i had to correct that same quote earlier too.
