Soul - anything out of the Motown camp until the mid-70s, before Lionel Richie became a problem, the Philly Soul guys, most of the Quiet Storm, little blue-eyed soul, Brian McKnight, and the most underrated soul combo of all-time, Les Nubians.
Funk - late 60s, early 70s Motown from Stevie or the Temptations, anything bearing George Clinton's, Sly Stone's, or Isaac Hayes' name or presence.

Don't get me started on Lionel Richie. I could write books on how much that man absolutely sucked.

I'll relent for a moment on my Lionel Richie bashing and admit that yes, I am a huge fan of that song. Hello I can mildly tolerate. The Commodores were just ehhhhh. The only thing worse than an ehhhhhh band is their frontman going solo. Ehhhhhh.

That's one of their best tunes, which doesn't really say much.

Jason, you stole my bag. Lionel Richie is the man SOLELY responsible for ruining the entire R&B world.
Far too much great stuff to remotely narrow it down.

No way. It was over by 1979. Rick James was the only true funkateer at that point, besides Clinton.

Oh, I think with all Rick's own cocaine/woman abuse/prison escapades, plus the sample on MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This," Rick James was already not taken very seriously by most of the public anyway; the Chappele sketch merely provided a concrete verbal line people could say. I don't think it was that damaging; it lifted James back into prominence just before he died, and from my experience, when people actually say "I'm Rick James, bitch," it's usually meant as like "hey, I'm the ultimate pimp," not as an insult to James himself. Hell, the sketch probably did more to introduce kids to Rick's music than it did to hurt his legacy. Maybe I'm just rationalizing because I like Chappele, though. The sketch where they played basketball against Prince was way finnier anyway.

Funky Worm by Ohio Players (though the one doing virtually all the ohio playing is future P-funkateer Junie Morrison)

James Brown. Hands down the best! Funk Soul . He is the Godfather. Marvin Gaye for the best soulful music. Some of his stull is just soooo good.
But then again this is like asking about Rock & Roll.
