Title: Mike Love Oh! Those Girls & American Girls
Post by: rickymyfataar on February 19, 2018, 07:23:52 AM
I found two demos of Mikes 'Oh! Those Girls' & 'American Girls'. Does anyone have any information on these two? And what other Mike Love unreleased songs are out there apart from Country Love and First Love?

'Oh! Those Girls' is kinda sort of a guilty pleasure. I like how Mike sings in a punk type of manner that he never really does on any other released song.

Aww, poor baby :'(. Dude, it appears that you don't have the faintest clue as to what internet bullying around here really is.  :o :o :o

Adrian Baker is an artistic genius. His solo work is jaw droppingly magnificent and his 1980s work with Mike are all diamonds in the rough -- discarded, but not forgotten, much like Smile.

It sounds like something off an Electric Blue video circa 1984, so yes, guilty pleasure is not far off the mark!

I believe recorded between 1981-2 at Adrian's London studio.
There is/was a 22 track boot cd called 'A Bakers Dozen' which covers some of the sessions.

Wow interesting. Where can I hear this?

Someone posited awhile back on this board (I believe) that the insanely-off key recording of "Can't Stop Talking 'Bout American Girls" has been tampered with/altered on purpose to sound that way.

It was an interesting theory that I had mixed feelings about. Presumably, this would have been done back years ago. The theory involved it being some kind of joke someone played years ago. But it struck me as a pretty odd, arcane, obscure "joke" to play, either back then or years later.

On the other hand, it's so off key that it sounds beyond simply sharping or flatting some notes. It does sound like the entire vocal is in a different key.

Here's an old 2014 thread regarding the potential monkeying with the "American Girls" vocal. Weigh the sources in that thread accordingly...

And by a strange coincidence, myKe luHv and company has seen to it that all the vids in that thread are no longer available. Easy to see why.  :lol

Interestingly all of Mike's Catch a Wave/Nascar album are on Spotify as the album "California Girls" by Adrian Baker. Perhaps Adrian's the one doing the monkeying?

I have never understood why Mike could sound so unbelievably nasal between 1982-2005ish then have his voice improve. Was he trying to sound that way? Did he just not care and sang off key ( that's the vibe I get from many of his 80s/90s performances)?

OH THOSE GIRLS was originally recorded by The Skatt Bros.. It was released in Australia and New Zealand.

This is my recollection of the song...

I believe Curt Boettcher had recorded a version. I heard the track, either from Curt or Ray McCarthy. Mike may have recorded it around the time of the Looking Back With Love project.

My impression was that Curt wasn't actually singing about girls.

What blows my mind is that he does this stuff, but then says in Melody Maker(?) that Brian’s ‘88 album sounded like “sh*t” because of the arrangements and lyrics. After hearing this stuff I don’t think he was in any position to critique Brian’s work.

But yeah, I think Mike always had it in him to do songs like “Daybreak” and “All I Wanna Do” - he just chose not to use that voice often.

What about Tricia when was that recorded? Is there a list of Loves unreleased songs out there. I'll be honest I enjoy his songs.

I saw that "Today I started loving you again" is listed as being written by "Williams"; it should be "Haggard/Owens" though.
