1963 was full of good stuff. This one by the Chiffons was truly exceptional:

Listening to Adam Marsland's "The Big Bear" and reading his comment about "the cello hook which I'm sure is ripped off from something or other", it does have a whiff of the VU's "Lady Godiva's Operation" about it, more shapewise than notewise, I'd say. And a bowed instrument is involved on both occasions...

Every song on Ezra Furman's Perpetual Motion People album. But if I had to pick a few in particular, Lousy Connection, Haunted Head, Ordinary Life, and Body was Made. But really, all the songs.

Oddly, the track that sticks out for me so far is "Tip Of A Match", which isn't among your favourites. I like his use of doo wop nonsense rhymes! What an original talent. I can understand you getting obsessed with this album...

aw yeah the last one is purple vinyl be jealous.

Hey M. I can only see a ? for #3 but the code tells me it's Angel Olsen's My Woman. I'm sure I'd be jealous if I could see it. Grin
Not my copy, although this is the store that I bought it from.

John, I'll give your walking routine a try. But I might end up doing the "Hokey Pokey."  Grin

The weekend was wonderful. On Saturday a group of us met at a house on the Mississippi gulf coast (in the town of Waveland) for a day of "spiritual reflection." The topic was "Mercy." During the breaks I'd sit on the front porch and look out over the Gulf, watching the gentle waves and the swooping sea birds. Much of the day a gentle rain fell. Incredibly peaceful.
Today I got up real early and made crawfish pie. It finished baking right before going to a church service. After we got back we went to my sister's house in rural Mississippi for lunch. Four generations of family were there. Along with the crawfish pie, my sister made a great chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, plus there was salad, bread, and lots of dessert. Add to that wonderful conversation that thankfully steered clear of politics (we don't see eye to eye on that subject to say the least) and it was a most enjoyable day. Hated to leave but hope we can do it again soon.

Glad to hear the weekend went so well. You better make sure you're insured before attempting my walk. Funnily, you're not the first person to mention the "Hokey Pokey" in that context...

Most music posted in this section of the board is of recent origin----and understandably so. This new topic is a place for music from the decades prior to the millennium.

If nothing else, it's the context of (or backdrop to) the music of the band to which this forum is dedicated. Other than that, anything goes.

I had this opening song on my mind this afternoon----no reason, no breakages...

Was halblaineisgood banned?

No, he asked me to delete his account

This current epidemic of asking to have one's account deleted is approaching the level of high farce.

Of course everyone is entitled to come and go as they please but this is drama queen stuff.

Yes indeed. Kudos to the man.

I can't be doing with kicking stuff out but the top track for me (on a genius debut album of all good tracks) is "There's A Place", if only for the harmonica and the intervals between the voices.

It's a song of few notes where every single note counts...
4160  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Welcome thread on: September 18, 2016, 04:08:19 AM
Got this message for the first time in ages. Most encouraging!
Big deal - click "refresh" 20 times till the page appears. It gets back very quick.

All solved now, RR.

Leaving aside the differences of opinion, I'm fascinated by the interplay (on several levels) between ours and the new board and the impact its arrival has had on BB MB poster behaviour in general. Maybe someone should write a book about it.

Seriously, a book about Beach Boys fandom would make a great read!

Just how many albums you lined up for future listening? There must be thousand.

Not at all! It's true I listen to many of the "lined-up" albums all the way through. Others, mainly rap ones, I dip into to check out their use of samples and others stiil are clearly not my cup of tea so I let then go after a few tracks. I should point out that I do all this listening at the very beginning and very end of almost every day...

All I've got lined up right now is (for the second time!) the complete wondrous oeuvre of Adam Marsland (http://www.adammarsland.com/adamatoz.html). Every song  a winner. If you decide to check it out, folks, see which of the albums most takes you fancy and buy it. It's only fair!

When I need a break from Mr M, SCZ's suggestion will come in very handy. :=)

Every song on Ezra Furman's Perpetual Motion People album.

I've got it linked for future listening. Always pleased to broaden my musical horizons. ;=)

I did a little horizon broadening myself and listened to your cantata. Very powerful.

Yes, Mr P could deliver. (The conductor Valery Gergiev rates him the number one 20th-century composer.)

I suppose he's like Tchaikowsky in some ways----he could write a luminous ballet like Cinderella (which my daughter danced in many years ago) and something as grim (but ultimately uplifting) as Alexander Nevsky...

Not so much a song as a cantata (and a film):

Most of the animals in this off-kilter menagerie can be found in a BB song title:

Worms, i.e. Del's Sahara ebony: "Be, damsel." (Gaelic: "I do, cow.") Tempo woodpecker (Idaho), dawg, ibex, a bird rib... Axe big wad. Oh, a dire KC EP----doo wop me! Two codicil eagles made by no bear. A hassle? Deism row

We saw a big Rothko retrospective in Houston, TX last December, as well as the Rothko chapel there.

The Rothko Chapel must be an extraordinary experience in real time.

(I've been through it virtually at the Hague show but that's hardly the same.)

Neither Brian nor Mike chose the following title for their new biographies - probably wisely so! By the great palindromist WILL THOMAS:

"A Gassy Obese Boy's Saga"

 LOL

Hey, I'm new here and I know this is an old topic but I just wanted to tell you that after stumbling across this I immediately bought one  Smiley So rad...(ish, lol). Can't wait for it to arrive!

Hi SCZ and welcome! I do like your Rothko avatar...

Thanks! Real photo of the real deal at MoMA! My favourite place in all the world...

Wow. My wife was lucky enough to visit MoMA in the late '70s. And there's been a recent Rothko exhibition in The Hague which we both visited. Unfortunately it was very busy, so there wasn't much chance to immerse oneself in the paintings----too much noise and too many heads in the way!

By a curious coincidence, the painting in my avatar is also in the MoMA collection:

I don't know if the original compositions are public domain, though...
Then how do they become in public domain? Are you sure these are 1965 recordings not 1966?!

According to AGD they were recorded on October 15, 1965.

4172  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: So what did we all do today? on: September 15, 2016, 05:46:08 AM
My day will be mainly taken up with two activities: cooking lasagna for nine (see the recipes topic) and doing my little walk. Let me explain.

I've been going to the physiotherapist for my left knee, which is well buggered. On my last visit he prescribed me a set of walking exercises----all in a straight line and some involving bending the knees. I've made it more interesting by setting it to music (I'll spare you the details) using an early 1960s song that came to mind immediately (although I had to find out who sang it). And it works wonderfully well. The main problem is keeping my balance! Apparently that's a good thing, as it adds a side-to-side movement. This is the song in question:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Krn4HEA4iV8

By popular request, this is the footwork involved. The two-bar opening riff sets the pace----each "step" is a slow count to four over two bars. Every step forwards or backwards (always in a straight line) is followed by bending the knees while remaining upright (or as upright as possible, lol). Keep in mind that there are four steps per verse (no pun intended) and for the instrumental break and six for the chorus ("You just walk..."). Good luck!

Intro and verse I: Ten forward steps toe-to-heel
Chorus and verse II: Ten backward steps toe-to-heel
Chorus and solo: Ten forward steps one footstep apart
Verse III and chorus: Ten backward steps one footstep apart
Verse IV and the first four bars of chorus: Six large steps forward
Last eight bars of chorus and fade: Six large steps backward

Begin as far back as you can or you might find yourself walking into a wall just before verse III...

Assuming it's the same better half, do give him my regards. :=)

What did you think of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel?
