I shared that vid with Ivan Doroschuk from Men Without Hats - and as an old synth hoarder himself, he definitely dug it! The next time the Hats play Calgary I'm sure he'll stop by for a visit.

Fantastic!

Those four concerts will be interesting. Anyone here playing to go? Expect a lot of vids and pontificaters pontificating.

The "Clang-ding-dangin'" round at the end owes much to the still unreleased "Clang" from late 1975 (but not "Clangin'", which is another song entirely based on the "I'm The Pied Piper" riff" - still with me ?). Sounds a bit like something from TLOS, no ?

Wait. So let's get this right, once and for all.

"Clang" has the "clang-ding-dangin" thing. This is from 1975.
"Clangin'" has the "I'm The Pied Piper" riff and "mow-mama-yama". This is from 1974, and was worked on again in 1976.

Correct?

Not exactly... "Clang" is the "mow-mama-yama-holy-hallelujah" chant (vide the 1976 Rolling Stone David Fenton mega-article, the one with Brian on the cover w/bathrobe & surfboard. Moses Wilson). Otherwise, yes, and my source defines the word "impeccable".

God bless the Beach Boys! Beyond our personal orbit, could you imagine explaining to someone the finer points of "mow-mama-yama-holy-hallelujah?"

 Grin

There was also a spread in People magazine about this. Brian looked even worse in it. Apparently, at the time, he had a phone booth in his house (like a Doctor Who style thing) that he used as a hiding place.

That actually sounds kinda cool to me. Pure wacky indulgence. I bet that Melinda put a stop to that. She's no rock and roll fun. Wink

binders full of women, all ready for school -
who would choose one but a kuh-ray-zee fool?

MIKE: "Hey, what rhymes with Benghazi?"

That's a NUT buster!

During tonight's Presidential debate when Mitt Romney announced he had "binders full of women", somewhere in America Mike Love thought to himself..."that's a good idea for a song."

Love these old shots. The fact that they're black & white add a timeless quality. Decadent film noir. Im Cabaret.

Com'on. That's such a blanket statement.

A clever setlist with some pre-publicity in certain markets, and you'll be able to sell your modest sized theaters. If you wanna, that is. I've been there, have you? I haven't seen an embarrassing sea of empty seats. That being said, I'm talking something akin to his early years of touring when he played large clubs and old vaudeville theaters - talkin' 1,000 seaters.

Music should be free, maaaaan.

Have you ever been to a festival, a socialist congregation?
Where Country Joe would do his show, and he'd sing about liberty
With the Beach Boys there, in the open air
Assuming they meet our fee

Now this thread is the perfect mix of official information, self righteous indignation and sarcasm.

What did Doug (Dinsdale) do?

He used... sarcasm. He knew all the tricks...puns, parody, metaphors, dramatic irony. He was vicious.

Why can't John Cleese tour with the Beach Boys?

Birthday party, huh? That barely leaves enough room in the budget for a balloon-sculpting clown.
362  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 13, 2012, 02:41:44 PM
I'm sure there'll be plenty of good shows to come. With special guests. Good seats still available.

Thou shalt not buggeth be at thine old man.

 LOL

If I were a man of independent means, I would inscribe these most excellent commandants upon a boogie board - and hang it on my wall.
364  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: what do you think real surfers thought of the beach boys? on: October 13, 2012, 12:51:41 PM
I don't have the video handy, but wasn't there something in either the BW A&E doc or maybe American Band where an old time surfer mentions how Capitol used to drop by their hangout with Beach Boys vinyl? He went on to say that they threw the stuff in the trash as soon as the Capitol rep left the room. Talkin' early days though, when the publicity machine was just revving up.

Scrawled upon the surfboard are the ten commandments of the Sea of Tunes.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Just tryin' to keep it positive.

Oh for god sakes. There are plenty of people that I could say I'm somewhat jealous of - but John Stamos isn't one of them. Good for him that he helps disadvantaged kids. He just comes off as a prat on stage imo, and if sizable percentages show up to just to see Stamos, well - there's no accounting for taste. I doubt your assertion by the way...

Hey, Russell Crowe and Billy Bob Thornton are both musician/actors. Both have infinitely more style, charisma and ah, musical chops than this sit com retread jackass. Both of them wouldn't (and don't) act like a gee-golly teenager when they're performing on stage. Some of us have style, and some don't.
368  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 13, 2012, 09:11:05 AM
Honestly...Stamos does what EVERYONE in this thread hoped and wished they could do.

Those of us who have played and recorded would probably try a wee bit to not act like such a goober on stage. Just sayin.

Hey, I'd love to see the "Brianista" word go away, too.

He may not be a deity but he has a personality cult built up around him by certain fans that would sicken the Kim family.

When he wears his magic robe, he walks upon the waves like so.

I found the article old hat, personally. Been there, done that and we all know that. Still - you reap what you sow, and the media can be a vicious unchained Corgi. Sucks for you, Mike.

He actually performed Let It Shine when he performed outside of Tacoma, during the Pet Sounds tour. I heard the band do it during soundcheck as well. Rare one to hear live.
371  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW & Band: private show @ House of Blues, Dallas (October 12th 2012) on: October 12, 2012, 04:53:31 PM
BRAVO Brian. I'd like to think that this is Brian's way (his camp's way) of giving the finger to the Mike Love phoney baloney road show. No love and mercy from me, jack. I like gettin' even.

And to echo other comments on this thread, it's not the same as touring as 'da Beach Boys'. Not at all. No matter what lawyers draw up on hotel napkins. Screw Mike, Bruce and Stamos. Rock over London, Rock on Dallas, Brian Wilson...he jus' wasn't made for these times.
372  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Official thread for Brian & Al's Official Response to Mike/Bruce Band Tour in the LA Times on: October 12, 2012, 11:11:42 AM
I used to share Andrew's view that they're wise to 'go out on top', but after thinking about it I'm convinced that they have another solid album in them - provided that Joe Thomas is there to keep the peace as it were. The problem here is, what do you do with another album? And let's assume for the moment that it's uptempo and it hits all the classic R&R buttons that Brian's known for. What next?

You have to tour. In fact, Capitol would insist.

And I don't think that anyone either wants or clearly knows what they really want in 2013. It's a shame really, because I'm convinced that a follow up album would be fine and well received by us fans. This isn't MIU/LA era - they're grown ups here and they know how to make a well rounded, good sounding album. It would be so easy, except for settling on how to promo the damn thing.
373  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 12, 2012, 08:55:13 AM
The one thing I don't understand is that the average household will not know the name Mike Love or Brian Wilson, but will almost certainly know who John Stamos is - so why is he always tagging along with them? It's just that he never looks like he's a star in that line-up. It's almost like take your kid to work day, and Stamos is there with a sheepish grin rawking out on an unplugged guitar.

Take your kid to work day. Well said.
HEY...LOOKAT ME! I'M RAWKIN!

From Austin media prior to their show:
http://www.kvue.com/entertainment/slideshows/The-Beach-Boys-John-Stamos-come-to-Austin-172843411.html

Of course, the inevitable queston:

There were reports Love, who legally owns the band name, fired Wilson and the others at the end of the tour. Love says that’s not true.

“Like they said, I fired my cousin Brian, come on, I can't fire him even if I wanted to, which I don't!” Love said. “We agreed to get together for a reunion tour that would last, it was to be 40 shows in the U.S. and 40 overseas. It was negotiated and agreed upon by all concerned that there would be a beginning and an end. It got misconstrued in the public.”

That's all. Huh huh...a misunderstanding, see? Dum dee dum..move along now. Nothing to see here!

BTW - the Stamos photos made me throw up a bit. Do you get the feeling that this guy has been itching and scratchin' to get back into the band? Man. Relentless. An absolute attention whore, that.

What's next? Stamos Forever - Ringo NEVER!

I don't know about Bob and David, but Al isn't doing anything. Com'on down Al. We'll sing some Weavers
tunes. It'll be outtasight.
