Just saw this posted on a BB tumblr

"Also, my interview with Mark Linett sheds a little light on where that version came from. Apparently, while working on the first-ever stereo mix of Wild Honey, they found a few run-throughs of "Surf's Up" with just Brian and a piano, AFTER Smile had been aborted"

Wow that's amazing news, no album needs a stereo remix more than Wild Honey!

Maybe he just means Wild Honey the song? I doubt there's any chance of a stereo remix of the whole album!? Is there?

Legit Captain Obvious stuff here, but every album up to including Wild Honey deserves a re-release:

a) The original mono mix, including those that haven't been released on CD yet.
b) A stereo mix - preferably the whole album, but if it cannot be done (or cannot be done decently), just opt for the tracks that can be in stereo as bonus tracks.
c) Appropriate rarities of the era, starting with the standard two-fer bonus tracks and and hopefully adding a bit to each of them Smiley

This time, no noise reduction as on the old two-fers, no gobs of compression/limiting as on the recent two-fers, get the right guy in there so we can finally have decent representations of these albums on CD. Finally, much like the 97 Pet Sounds release, lots in the way of liner notes - recording info, interviews, pictures, song info, etc. Standard stuff, obvious stuff,  but still. Makes meh sad that something like that doesn't exist. ---->  Sad

I'd probably be just as excited for a release like this as I am the Smile box set (which is obviously a lot). Hopefully the 50th anniversary and the Smile box will generate enough interest that something like it will happen in the near future. (PLZ PLZ PLZ IMO)

the stereo mixes we got of the 1967-1969 songs have been pretty... awful though

let the wind blow and time to get alone on hawthorne hurts my ears. why so much reverb?!

Some're good, some're not. But yeah, sometimes too much reverb, way too much compression, etc. Hopefully they'd avoid such things when doing an entire album. Hopefully.

They could include that one on the Surf's Up DVD-A. Just saying!

Might be worth merging this with the other Wild Honey Stereo thread, or at least pasting Tony's clarification of the Wild Honey stereo thing, so people don't get their hopes up unnessecarily:

Let me clarify, so there's no confusion...

I asked Mark about what was left in the archives, now that SMiLE is coming, and the rarities collections Endless Harmony and Hawthorne, CA have unearthed a lot of things. He mentioned that fans have been clamoring for true stereo mixes of albums that have only been available in mono.

Then he mentioned the recently-found Brian demo of "Surf's Up," which was a result of them archiving the Wild Honey tapes. There were 4 or 5 takes of Brian running through the track at the end of a reel marked for "Country Air."

Because that was all mentioned together, I inferred that they were related. However, after replaying his quote, he didn't specifically say that a Wild Honey stereo mix was next on the agenda.

Sorry, I am new to this board, and don't want to put words in other people's mouth. The interview will be up soon.

Thanks,

Tony

Anyone else think it's a shame that the WH SU is being thrown away on this box set? Surely its proper place is as a bonus track on the stereo WH CD release?

Hearing stuff like this, is like getting a peek into Santa's workshop.  When Mark Linnett wakes up in the morning, and he's already done whatever his latest project is, he must just come up with cool stuff to pass the time with like, "Oh, I think I'll make Wild Honey Stereo Today" lol

WHO THE HELL KNOWS what great stuff they're cookin' up for us in the workshop right now.  Plus, as this proves, apparently they still have stuff on tape they don't even know they have.  Whoa.

Having the complete four or five takes on a bonus EP CD would make a great Best Buy exclusive for the Smile Sessions box set. I wouldn't mind spending the extra dollars for a second copy of the set.  Cool

I for one love the stereo mix of "Let The Wind Blow" on Hawthorne and the mix of "Country Air" that circulates. Even though some elements are surely missing from the multi-tracks I think this album would sound much better in stereo. I've done some of my own mixes (on a comp of mine called "Thank God For Wonderful") where I synced up the tracks from SOT Unsurpassed Masters 19 and tweaked them to sound pretty good (except for "Darlin'") and in stereo. If I could do it and make it sound that good then there is no telling what Mark can do using the original multi-tracks.

And yes, do Smiley Smile too!
