Regarding Matthew Jordan, I looked at his website, which also linked to his Instagram, and there is a video of him singing Don't Worry Baby, and Jeff Foskett is on guitar but not singing. In the post, Matthew says that he'll be filling in for all of September and October with Mike's band.

I'd be interested to know how widely distributed this coupon was, and how many people used it!
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2019 Tour Thread on: September 08, 2019, 01:19:16 AM
I was at tonight's show at Pala. Brian did well for most of the show, only doing his talking singing voice for the PS selections. The setlist was the same as Phoenix, minus Do It Again. The band was in great form and was having fun! There is a new percussionist, not sure what his name is, as they did not do band intros tonight.

All the clips sound great and the band sounds happy, and Brian is definitely stepping it up a notch. I'd also like to say that whether it's permanent or temporary, it's great to see Randell up there on stage with Brian. I really do think that he's very underrated as a vocalist, and he isn't really given the credit he's due.

The only thing I have any interest in here is "Keeping The Summer Alive"...I'd always hoped they'd add that to the set with Cowsill on lead...maybe this will get the band thinking in that direction?

I've been asking Scott for on and off for years to suggest it to Mike! I feel like it would fit the band's vibe very well. Hopefully they'll add it to the setlist!

Am I the only one who is excited about this release? The Rockaway Beach clip sounds crisp and clear and upbeat and fun. I remember thinking just in the last week or two that Mike should eventually release a studio version of Summertime blues, with the current band rather than the version with Adrian that has been in circulation. I'm also excited to see California Beach get  released after all these years! I always thought that would have been a great song for KTSA. Speaking of KTSA, I'm not sure if that's a remake of the same song (the wording of the title is slightly different), but I've been putting in requests with Scott for years for John Cowsill to sing that one live! So count me as one long time fan who is excited about this! Much more than UTL and RFTS.

Confusing Billboard article:

Is this a recording contract?

That's funny. I was listening to a Bruce compilation today, called "one original Beach boy" today on a long car trip. I had bought it last year and had never listened to it. Turns out that it's mostly tracks from pajama party (which I've had for years), but with a few stray tracks tacked on, including a slowed down instrumental version of Blue Moon which funnily enough ends with one person applauding loudly.

I too find all the surfer stomp songs confusing.

This is surreal...I don't really remember posting this, and I guess I just reminded myself about this CD, which I forgot I had. Apparently I just listened to it for a day or two and filed it away.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dean Torrence joining Mike's band? on: March 01, 2019, 12:07:54 PM
I haven't read through the whole thread, so I'm not sure this has been shared yet. This is what is probably the only Mike & Dean interview there ever was. Mike & Dean seem to be great friends at this point. Topics covered include Rock and Roll City, Radio Shack record label, Jan Berry, and Brian Wilson

Following up on the topic of Mike and Dean, here are two artistic gems in a row ... Caroline No beautifully segueing into The Locomotion ...

I was surprised to find this, and I immediately sent it to Custom Machine and other fan friends! I guess I wrote a review on Rateyourmusic.com back in 2003, and someone was inspired by the review and made this video! I happened upon it accidentally, when a Facebook friend posted a different video from the channel on their timeline. So crazy how I found it!

You did not deserve to be ridiculed or ripped to shreds and whatever other indignity you suffered!  A quick perusal of performances in recent years on YouTube make your assertion blatantly obvious. And while I like a few of his songs and he is undeniably talented, he's not so special that I would  blindly fight for his honor.
Thank you. I just stopped responding to the thread. I wish I could remember where it was so I could screenshot it and show it to you guys. It was crazy.

I remember commenting on Facebook somewhere that Frankie Valli has lip-synced for years, and man did the fans come with their claws out. They ridiculed me, dismissed me and were ready to rip me to shreds! So there are fans that will defend him and assert that he's actually singing to this day!
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was \ on: March 24, 2018, 05:25:47 PM
Not really an answer to the original question, but the song has been included on and off in the 2000s and 2010s, and seems to have a moderate response. John Stamos sang the lead during the non-C50 shows, and David sang it during the C50 tour. I think the moderate response (vs a tepid response) was at least partially due to the track's inclusion on Sounds of Summer in 2004.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / New bass player with Mike & Bruce on: March 19, 2018, 12:47:45 AM
Does anyone know the name of the new bass player with the Beach Boys band? As mentioned previously, Randell was only back temporarily (unfortunately), and he is back with California Surf, Incorporated. The new bass player was playing with them on St Patrick's Day. From the pictures I've seen, it's not Brian Eichenberger, but someone different altogether.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 17, 2018, 11:00:35 PM
Whoever the new bassist is, he started tonight. I saw pictures on a Facebook post. I know that Randell is back playing with his old band with Bobby Figueroa, Ed Carter and Probyn Gregory this upcoming week.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 09, 2018, 10:58:26 AM
Word is that Christian is back full time, and that Randell is unfortunately just back temporarily. I'm not sure what the reason is.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike & Bruce 2018 Tour Thread on: February 17, 2018, 12:59:33 PM
In response to the bass player question...I don't think The Beach Boys have EVER had an above average bass player on stage. The fact that they found Bruce's bass playing acceptable in 1965 is enough proof of how little they cared about it. Now that being said, Brian Wilson has written some of the greatest bass lines to grace popular recordings...but that has nothing to do with the bass guitar as an instrument, that is purely based on harmony.

So in recent years? One certainly doesn't stand out over the other. The only virtuosic players to grace Mike's band in the past twenty years have been Totten & Cowsill. We'll never see Mike cast them aside. The operation would crumble instantly.

The bass playing on The In Concert album is above average.  Ed Carter was above average on the bass.  So was Blondie.  Bruce is also better than you give him credit for.

I always wondered why Ed departed from the band in the 90s. He definitely seemed like an excellent musician who had played with them for decades, and I never heard about any interpersonal problems with anyone else.

The Beach Boys will be playing the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal this July. Although confirmed, the date has not been released yet. Seeing as they are playing the Ottawa area on the 21st, one could assume it will be that same weekend, either the 20'th or 21st. Outdoor stage, Free show.

At a comedy festival?  Seems like a strange venue to be playing. I do believe you, and I did google it and found a few articles on it.  But just seems a little odd.

Some here may remember this: when Adrian was dismissed, Randell took over pretty much all the leads that he was doing at the time, including Don't Worry Baby, Good Vibrations, plus others that Adrian did not do.  When Christian was added, and later Jeff, all of Randell's leads were given to them, and he took over Then I Kissed Her as his one lead vocal during the show, which he was OK-to-good at, but definitely not his strongest lead.  Prior to that, I think that he was really, really good on Good Vibrations, as well as Don't Worry Baby.  At one point, he did I'm So Young and was INCREDIBLE!  He was also really good on Brian's part on Good To My Baby.  His take on The Warmth Of The Sun was pretty good, but I think Jeff has him beat on that one.

Overall, I think that Randell deserves to stay, assuming that's what he wants.  During his 14 years with the band, he didn't get a lot of recognition, but just hearing him and Christian back with the band brings back good memories.  Ike is in an impressive singer in his own right, and fit into the blend well, but he is less Beach Boy-sounding than Randell.  Although I was a BIG fan of his lead on Lady Lynda when it was added briefly to the setlist.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike & Bruce 2018 Tour Thread on: February 13, 2018, 01:30:29 AM
Christian's voice really helps to fill out the middle third in my opinion.  I'm so glad he is back, just wish he had more vox to sing lead on.  Did anyone else hear the vocal stacking on Why Do Fools Fall In Love, the band has 2 legitimate and excellent falsetto singers and yet "Scotty T" and his thin falsetto take the lead on it.  Sounded awful!

In the past, it was Scott and Jeff doing a tandem lead. I think that before that, it was Scott and Randell doing a tandem lead (going by memory). I think that attempting this as a solo lead would be a daunting task for anybody, and I give Scott props for trying, and doing fairly well in my book. To be honest, even Brian Wilson's lead on the studio recording sounded iffy to me from first listen.

Am I the only one that is super stoked that Randell is back?? Also happy that Christian is back as well. Brian E was good, but I liked Randell's leads better. And hearing Christian back in the vocal blend is great! Didn't realize how much I missed his voice in the blend after he left.

Not to sound like a stick in the mud, but is anyone else slightly annoyed that these Pet Sounds dates are still happening? They've been saying it's the "final" performances for the last two years, when it's obvious that these aren't the final performances of PS.

It's fantastic Brian and his band are still touring, but saying that it's a "final" performance of Pet Sounds for the past two years creates a false sense of urgency to concertgoers — esp. since he's coming back to the same cities.

I feel the same way. The late 2016 shows were billed as "final", then the tour was extended a full year, appearing in many of the same cities. I really believed that 2017 would be the end of the tour. But then the VERY next tour is ANOTHER Pet Sounds tour??? I love Pet Sounds, and I love Brian's shows, but he really seemed bored at the 2017 show I attended. I'm grateful for any tour, but I think that both Brian and his fans would enjoy something new. Maybe even another Smile tour.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: This is it: The best single disc Beach Boys comp ever released on: December 07, 2017, 01:56:01 PM
This is one of my favorite compilations, but the inclusion of Why Do Fills Fall In Love is very out of place, especially as sequenced. Cotton Fields would have been a far more appropriate choice.

Thank you, Eric Aniversario, for remembering this and starting this thread.  My apologies for being late to the party.  Carl always impressed me as a gentle, spiritual sort of person who gave his best for the fans and the Beach Boys, even prodding them to act like 1981 was just as important as 1961 (during 1981, when he went his own way for awhile).  God bless us, every one.

You're very welcome! It is a date that sticks out in my head. In 1998, I started the Beach Boys Setlist Archive out of the desire to preserve the touring history of the Beach Boys. It's been harder to get motivated to continue updating for numerous reasons, but I do intend to eventually get to it.
