Randy Bachman is currently touring as Bachman Turner Overdrive - without Fred Turner, or any other former members of BTO.
Will Daryl tour as Hall & Oates?  LOL

Really? Last I knew, Fred, Rob Bachman, and Blair Thornton were BTO, with a guy named Randy Murray playing Randy Bachman's parts, and that Fred and Randy also briefly toured as just "Bachman-Turner".

I'd imagaine there would be issues with how old the software this board uses when it comes to making all pages secure. The software is now 9 years out of date.

Correct.  Someday maybe I will be able to fix that.

Hi Chuck, is there a roadmap/plan that could be put in place for such a transition? And could the mods here help facilitate any work moving forward to help this happen? Could our community as a whole do anything to help this happen?

And man this place and its mods sure do live rent free in some people's minds. Once this boards issues are figured out it'll be nice for the universe as a collective whole to not be subjected to posts about "Chuckie" and the "mods" from the EH forum.

That crotchety historian who will not be named is still doing his old "Chuckie forgot to pay his internet bill" routine all these years later?

man who had a lifetime of heavy drug use

I'm not sure that "lifetime" is a totally fair descriptor.  Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that, over the course of approximately 15-20 years, Brian had periods of heavy drug use?  Without a doubt, though, drug use comparable to Brian's during those bouts would have and did kill many of his peers, cf. Elvis, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon and many others.
I've read of Keith Moon taking elephant tranquilizer - in one infamous show, he collapsed during a song, and the others had to call out for a drummer from the audience. I can't imagine Brian or even Dennis taking anything quite that strong!
Elvis, of course, was not into street drugs. He preferred to depend on various doctors for what he "needed". Hendrix, based on what little I read, was really not a heavy "druggie". I've read conflicting reports of his death.
Whatever the amount or length of Brian's drug abuse, I think it's fair to say that he was not a person who should have ever "dabbled". Some could and come out the other side intact - namely, John, Paul, George and Ringo. For others, it quickly got out of control.
Don't forget Keef!

Well…I think they are a currently endangered species…the alternative rock band!! The airwaves are monopolized by mainstream pop and hip hop

The "airwaves" aren't really that important anymore. I still see decent crowds at the alt/indie rock shows I go to. Granted, they're usually at smaller venues, but rock is still a pretty sizable niche. I honestly don't mind that it's become the domain of NPR and PBS rather than MTV, because that means there aren't really a lot of meatheads and rednecks at shows, and the bad stuff from the genre doesn't get overplayed to death as much in public anymore.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian AI Project. on: September 24, 2023, 03:19:36 PM
I told my wife, when bookoff smile came out, that the best thing that could happen is that it would be "outdated by summer" and it seems my highest hopes are about to be met!!

https://youtube.com/shorts/YwGAn9QSVuk?feature=share

Is this Brian's vocals from BWPS getting the AI treatment? Or is it Dae Lims' voice?

And what apps are being used to do this? Or is that some sort of state secret?

It's not everyday that "respectable" artists share a bill with radio country acts and top 40 pap.

The live version of "Long Promised Road" on the "Good Vibrations" box set was an amazing vocal.

You mean on Endless Harmony? It wasn't the '93 box set.

This doesn't really excite me much. Seeing a bunch of bands, probably current and from yester year, performing classic BB songs. With or without whosever left, this strikes me as a worse effort that the 25th anniverrsary special from Hawaii...which wasn't really that good. We shall see. Maybe they can have that obnoxious guy play Do It Again, and have him strut around the stage with Mike screaming "DO IT"...or have Stamos mug for the cameras "playing" a guitar that isn't even plugged in. Would have been better to just have whose left, with Blondie and Ricky too, play a few classics...just that alone would have been enough IMHO.

Hopefully, it'll be classy and on PBS, rather than tacky and on Faux.

Live performance from 2003 at a place Jack apparently owned in Vermont, Carli Munoz is in the band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEM95UI_28o

And TIL that Western Justice had the same producer as Radiohead's The Bends, John Leckie.

That bit of over-talked “I’d Go Anywhere” from the C50 documentary is really the only extant “outtake” as such.

As others have mentioned, “Waves of Love” wasn’t worked on. Brian wanted no part of it, and it was literally in the process of being released as a solo Al track during the reunion sessions. And “Don’t Fight the Sea” had been released in 2010. Both of these would have/could have been potentially good reunion album tracks, but Al had already released them.

Bruce supposedly re-jiggered “She Believes in Love Again”, with one story indicating he actually used some of the ’85 version as a basis (including his (Bruce’s) vocals), and Foskett re-sang the Carl lead parts. I honestly don’t think this would have ever made it onto an album. It kinda sounded like Bruce just used the paid-for studio time to mess around with something.

I strongly suspect that some of the Brian-Joe songs on “No Pier Pressure” could have and perhaps would have ended up on a second reunion album. But there were supposedly a number of songs worked on and in contention in 2012 for the reunion album, and I’m not sure any of *those* were used for “No Pier Pressure”, as in taking the “Beach Boys version” and taking off the BB contributions.

“Daybreak Over the Ocean” was used from Mike’s circa 2004 solo album material, and it sounds like they did a quick dub job where the reunion group (most prominently Al, but apparently including Brian as well) just sang the “bring back…” interludes. The rest of the song has the same Christian Love/Adrian Baker (or whoever) vocals sans any other Beach Boys. I’ve always thought they should have had Al sing the lead on Mike’s 2004 version of “Too Cruel” (the only Christian Love sings; not the later 2017 rereremake) if they were going to fly something in from that album. “Cool Head” would have been good too, but that also had already been released in 2006.

I also remember reading an interview where Mike said he'd written a song with Dave Marks, but I can't remember if a title was said or not.

I could never see Stamos, despite all his years of trying to emulate Dennis, pull off something like that.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Featured Prominently in New Season of \ on: August 25, 2022, 05:14:57 PM
Yeah, the BB track isn't getting as much attention as the Kate Bush song, which was integral to the actual plot of multiple episodes of the show. But as far as the show is concerned, that's probably for the better as it would seem ridiculous if they not only shoved a bunch of "needle drops" into the show (which they've always done), but tried to make a bunch of them actual plot points.

But the BB track is getting more attention than anything in quite some time; as I mentioned earlier, it bumped "Kokomo" as the most popular song on Spotify, which is the first time I can ever remember "Kokomo" not being at the top.

I suppose technically the BB song would have to be laid over the show as it was, as opposed to being part of the plot, as the season is set in March 1986 and "California Dreamin'" didn't come out until later in the year as a single and on "Made in USA."

This is still probably the most popular song placement the BBs have had in ages. It's probably for the best it's getting the amount of attention it is and not more. The quickness with which popular stuff gets around the internet and social media can quickly lead to complaints of a song being "overexposed." Backlashes happen much faster now. I watch this show and I have no problem with the Kate Bush track, and I don't even go out of my way to read articles about the show or the song placements, and even I'm kind of sick of hearing about the song!

In a perfect world, Ding Dang would have the BBs number 1 spot on Spotify.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2022 Tour Thread (Plus Archived 2021) on: July 23, 2022, 04:57:39 PM
I saw Brian open for Chicago in Saratoga, NY last week. I hated seeing it, but Brian seemed like he was almost dead. He only sang on GOK, Be My Baby, and Surfer Girl, and I could barely hear him. I really hope he's OK (or as OK as someone like Brian can be). (Part of me is wondering if he's having the same issues that caused him to cancel those 2018 shows, and that he didn't cancel this time around because of contractual obligations with Chicago or whoever handles their business.) The band sounded perfect, just like every previous time I've seen them, but Al and Matt carried the bulk of the show, with heavy assists from Blondie and Darian.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are the Beach Boys charting so high at the moment? on: June 27, 2022, 08:14:07 AM
As I stated in the other thread (the SOS thread), the tide has been turning for the band for a while now. It’s mostly due to the millennials and Gen Z folks. This is a band that averaged a gain of 1500-2000 new Spotify followers a *day* for about 6 month’s time (currently averaging 1500 new a day per Chartmetric).  It’s even higher on YouTube. The age group of their fan base is younger compared to their peers in the 60s and 70s .

I’ve seen more than one post here and the other place  stating The Beach Boys would never been ranked along the classic rock greats like the Beatles and the Stones . Crazy part is, these are the only two places that say that ! Pretty much everyone else already has them on the same level. It seems like the only people who don’t give The Beach Boys their proper respect are their own fans

Yep. It’s like a part of the fandom has resigned itself to thinking that the Boys will never get respect.  And this why some of us are frustrated.  Saying the BB are “kitsch” really is an insult to The Beach Boys, their music, their artistry, and their talent.  The thing that Howie and others are trying to say is that the Boys DESERVE to be mentioned in the same breath as the Beatles and the Stones.  Their body of work is every bit as great as the Beatles et. al and has had almost as much as a cultural impact, too.  Calling them “kitsch” or “malt shop memories” sells their art and short and I, as a fan, am glad that there are people who are trying to change that.

I think a big part of the BBs' "dismissal", at least in the US, comes down to the fact that they generally didn't get airplay on classic rock radio stations.

It's been awhile since I listened to any of Murry "I'm A Genius Too" Wilson's album "The Many Moods...", and listening to that it's a total shambles of a song. It wanders, meanders, like walking blindfolded in a dark room musically. And respect to the session musicians who played that stuff, but damn it sounds like they didn't have enough in the budget to record a better take.

🎶One step, two step, talk about a new step, it's the Murry Wilson show🎶

Another BW tribute album by a bunch of artists I've never heard of.  ‍♂️

I’d like to welcome you to the Old Farts Club. I’ve had the same indifference for about 20 years now and it worries me not one dot.

Think I've already been there for quite some time now.    There's been enough BW/BB tribute albums by no-name indie artists to make an endless supply of drink coasters for everyone to go around.  Aren't there any relevant artists that would like to participate in one of these things...?

The one artist on this I've heard of is Lisa Mychols. She's worked with Darian Sahanaja in the past, her first band made several appearances on a local Los Angeles TV show that was created by Domenic Priore, and once played in a band with the guy who played Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. https://www.allmusic.com/artist/lisa-mychols-mn0000246734/biography

I'd bet the "60th Anniversary Tour" will be merely a string of Mike and Bruce dates.
