151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So...what exactly happened when Dennis met Stamos? on: November 26, 2014, 10:08:15 PM
I like in the "You Again" clip how Carl gets annoyed at Stamos' character that he can't read the arrangement. "Hold it, hold it, who wrote THAT? Matt, try it as written."

Carl the perfectionist on stage, even in faction.

It almost seems lyrically this was Brian's version of "I'm So Young" -- and then he covers "I'm So Young" a year later.  Cheesy

By the way, "I'm So Young" may be the Boys' best cover.

Love, love, LOVE it!

I agree with Jon -- one of Brian's best vocals.

Not a group shot of the Boys, but here are the Beach Boys and The Flame.

Was "Mama Says" rerecorded for Wild Honey?

Blonde reportedly sang at least one lead on the new album...

So did Blondie...ba-boom, crash! Thank you ladies and gentlemen, I'll be appearing here at the Laugh Factory through next Saturday....  LOL

Maybe AGD was referring to Al.  Wink

I know Brian speaks well of the Wrecking Crew, and he should for all the amazing work that they did on Beach Boys records. But has Brian ever tried to set the record straight? It would be nice to see Brian stand up for the playing that Carl, Dennis, Dave and Al -- and he himself -- did on the recordings.
158  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson's on: October 22, 2014, 09:47:51 AM
Nothing from the "Norbit" soiundtrack?
159  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Last known pictures of Dennis and Carl on: October 21, 2014, 07:45:01 PM
Granted they're from far away, but Dennis looks pretty good in the photos from Candlestick Park.

I agree with you on Phirnis and Jon about Dennis and Knebworth. He plays well all night, the "Ladies and Gentleman, Brian Wilson" on Surfer Girl is great, and I love his interaction with Mike Meros on Surfin' USA.

Dennis certainly still had the "spark" then.
161  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: New Drawing.... The Beach Men!! on: October 19, 2014, 11:25:16 AM
Great drawing. I would have had them on the John B instead of the USS Kokomo, but it's a minor quibble.  Smiley

Following on to the hostages comment, IIRC if you listen carefully to "Help Me Rhonda" on the Long Beach concert, you can hear someone in a low gutteral voice say something that sounds like "I love Shawn!"

Camera's not on the person saying it, but I have a pretty good guess who it was.

Might off a tad here, but I don't think they'd met by summer 1980 (Jon ?).

Is adamghost referring to the Long Beach concert - in 1981?

Yes, it was Long Beach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI5TcuwPOHA
163  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BEACHES IN MIND on: October 05, 2014, 06:40:44 PM
I always thought that the title track should open the album, and Think About the Days should have been track 9, signifying the change into the amazing final three tracks.
164  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Pile Up In California on: September 27, 2014, 09:16:04 AM
Obviously there are problems with Mike and Brian and Mike and Al, but Dave would be welcome at either show, right?
165  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian in 1977 on: September 24, 2014, 08:48:21 AM
And yet... even strung out in No-Man's Land, Carl still sounds better than almost anyone else.

That's true, but "The Night was So Young" is such a terrific song it could have been an all-time classic with a great Carl vocal. I first heard that song when the box set came out in 1993 and I thought it was Brian singing except for the "Why she has to hi-ii-ii-de" (and it's corresponding line in the third verse), which it the only time in the song to me when Carl sounded like Carl.
166  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jeff Foskett speaks about leaving Brian's band and joining Mike's band on: September 24, 2014, 08:33:15 AM
Some of the posts here are talking about C50, burying hatchets, coming together, etc. Maybe a picture can be worth a thousand words, so with that...if the significance of this photo isn't immediately noticeable for anyone, look closer:

Pretty crappy of Brian to throw a big party, then not invite Mike to it after Mike let him back in the band and everything...

Come on, folks. Mike obviously volunteered to TAKE the picture, with Bruce adjusting the tripod.

Oh god I abolutely hate this song SO MUCH that I love it. This one is fun to play really loudly with other people around - things get real uncomfortable real quick.

I didn't want to have to do this but...I'm going all in.

To me the amazing thing about this is that Dennis stayed behind the drums and played on it. If there was ever a song for him to take a break on, you'd think this was it.
168  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you ever think Brian saw this and... on: August 31, 2014, 10:56:40 PM
I'm a big fan of Nilsson. If you haven't seen the documentary "Who Is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him?" you should check it out.

Brian appears briefly a couple of times and praises Harry's songwriting. As might be expected, there's a lot of Van Dyke, but no Ringo Starr. Ringo finds it hard to talk on camera about his late friends.

Anyone know who the blonde is?
169  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The kindlier face of this board... on: August 27, 2014, 06:39:21 PM
Good post, Andrew. I lost my mom a little more than two years ago, and due to the timing of her death, the TWGMTR album is bittersweet for me. I still can't listen to "From There To Back Again," despite the greatness of the song.

I hope the kind words you received on the board helped bring you peace.

And AnnLee, get well soon and keep posting here.
170  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Could The Beach Boys and nothing but The Beach Boys play live? on: August 27, 2014, 12:20:19 PM
I don't think they could pull off a full show live. They could probably do a few songs -- I think "Surfer Girl" would be a really good one, even if it was just Dave on acoustic guitar and no one else playing -- but not a whole show and not some of the more complicated songs instrumentally.

After TWGMTR came out and before the acrimony at the end of the C50 tour, I thought there was a good shot at having another Beach Boys album. I was thinking it would be really great to have a track on it with just the five of them providing all the instruments and voices.

171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can someone explain how R&R Music was a Top 10 hit for 6 weeks? on: August 22, 2014, 12:14:31 AM
"It's OK" starts cold (no real intro) and is barely 2:00 long at best with a sizable fade-out.. for 1976 radio its too short. This is a song that needed someone to write a beginning to! Shocked

You're right. And Kayla Williams did a nice job!

172  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feeling confused...who's the hero and who's the villain? on: August 21, 2014, 11:09:40 PM
Now let's here it for the heroes: Gary Usher, Tony Asher, Roger Christian and VDP for starters.

I'd nominate Chuck Britz.
173  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feeling confused...who's the hero and who's the villain? on: August 20, 2014, 12:50:51 PM
Ok this is how I feel about them:

Dennis
Hero because
  • He was the balls in a rather nerdy-looking band
  • He was always an unconditional supporter of Brian
  • He wrote some good stuff and he even let some songs intended for Bamboo on LA - think that was very generous

Villain because
  • Seems he was an asshole womanizer, even getting his way with the wives of the other band members
  • He didnt take performing seriously after the mid 70s, getting drunk, showing up naked...losing his performer credibility
  • He failed to stand up for Brian during Smile and later when the band lost direction in the late 70s

I don't believe Dennis ever showed up naked. He streaked onstage a few times in the '70s when streaking was big. There's a big difference.
174  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston (lead vocals) on: August 18, 2014, 10:59:55 AM
I always wondered why Al didn't sing "At My Window" instead of Bruce, considering Al cowrote it and had just one small lead vocal section on "Add Some Music" on Sunflower. Maybe Brian, Al and/or Bruce thought it suited Bruce better, but it surprised me there was so much Bruce and so little Al vocally on Sunflower.

I think "Deirdre" is Bruce's best Beach Boys vocal.

So did Al stand on a box as they took their wedding vows?  Wink
