Following on to the hostages comment, IIRC if you listen carefully to "Help Me Rhonda" on the Long Beach concert, you can hear someone in a low gutteral voice say something that sounds like "I love Shawn!"
Camera's not on the person saying it, but I have a pretty good guess who it was.
Might off a tad here, but I don't think they'd met by summer 1980 (Jon ?). Is adamghost referring to the Long Beach concert - in 1981? Yes, it was Long Beach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI5TcuwPOHA

And yet... even strung out in No-Man's Land, Carl still sounds better than almost anyone else.
That's true, but "The Night was So Young" is such a terrific song it could have been an all-time classic with a great Carl vocal. I first heard that song when the box set came out in 1993 and I thought it was Brian singing except for the "Why she has to hi-ii-ii-de" (and it's corresponding line in the third verse), which it the only time in the song to me when Carl sounded like Carl.

Some of the posts here are talking about C50, burying hatchets, coming together, etc. Maybe a picture can be worth a thousand words, so with that...if the significance of this photo isn't immediately noticeable for anyone, look closer: Pretty crappy of Brian to throw a big party, then not invite Mike to it after Mike let him back in the band and everything... Come on, folks. Mike obviously volunteered to TAKE the picture, with Bruce adjusting the tripod.

Oh god I abolutely hate this song SO MUCH that I love it. This one is fun to play really loudly with other people around - things get real uncomfortable real quick. I didn't want to have to do this but...I'm going all in. http://youtu.be/EfmH2wHTQZ8?t=50sTo me the amazing thing about this is that Dennis stayed behind the drums and played on it. If there was ever a song for him to take a break on, you'd think this was it.

I'm a big fan of Nilsson. If you haven't seen the documentary "Who Is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him?" you should check it out. Brian appears briefly a couple of times and praises Harry's songwriting. As might be expected, there's a lot of Van Dyke, but no Ringo Starr. Ringo finds it hard to talk on camera about his late friends. Anyone know who the blonde is?

Good post, Andrew. I lost my mom a little more than two years ago, and due to the timing of her death, the TWGMTR album is bittersweet for me. I still can't listen to "From There To Back Again," despite the greatness of the song.
I hope the kind words you received on the board helped bring you peace.
And AnnLee, get well soon and keep posting here.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Could The Beach Boys and nothing but The Beach Boys play live?

I don't think they could pull off a full show live. They could probably do a few songs -- I think "Surfer Girl" would be a really good one, even if it was just Dave on acoustic guitar and no one else playing -- but not a whole show and not some of the more complicated songs instrumentally.
After TWGMTR came out and before the acrimony at the end of the C50 tour, I thought there was a good shot at having another Beach Boys album. I was thinking it would be really great to have a track on it with just the five of them providing all the instruments and voices.

Ok this is how I feel about them: DennisHero because - He was the balls in a rather nerdy-looking band
- He was always an unconditional supporter of Brian
- He wrote some good stuff and he even let some songs intended for Bamboo on LA - think that was very generous
Villain because - Seems he was an asshole womanizer, even getting his way with the wives of the other band members
- He didnt take performing seriously after the mid 70s, getting drunk, showing up naked...losing his performer credibility
- He failed to stand up for Brian during Smile and later when the band lost direction in the late 70s
I don't believe Dennis ever showed up naked. He streaked onstage a few times in the '70s when streaking was big. There's a big difference.

I always wondered why Al didn't sing "At My Window" instead of Bruce, considering Al cowrote it and had just one small lead vocal section on "Add Some Music" on Sunflower. Maybe Brian, Al and/or Bruce thought it suited Bruce better, but it surprised me there was so much Bruce and so little Al vocally on Sunflower.
I think "Deirdre" is Bruce's best Beach Boys vocal.
