Title: Which Beach Boys song has grown on you the most?
Post by: sheknowsmetoowell on February 09, 2012, 07:29:58 AM
What song did you dismiss when you first heard it, but now you can't get enough of? For me it's Be Here In The Morning. When I first heard it, I almost couldn't stand it, but now it's my jam.  :3d

Hmmm....lots of them. For now I'll say All This Is That. At first I thought it was boring and now I think it's beautiful.

Love You (first time was like wtf is this sh*t, now its among my favourites!)

match point of our love - The Avalanches did a nice modification on it, It sounds very similar to Since I Left You. Great song for being from such a horrendous album!

Probably A Day in the Life of a Tree (those Jack Riley vocals are... well, sort of rough) and most of Smiley Smile.

BB85- used to think it was crap, now I think it is a pretty good comeback album.

Smiley versions of SMiLE songs....I used to badmouth the album to my friends, saying the usual "it pales in comparison to what SMiLE would've been."
But now, Smiley Smile is easily one of my favorite Beach Boys albums, along with Today, Pet Sounds, Wild Honey, and Friends.

However, I still can't seem to into a good bulk of Summer Days/Nights. (obvious exceptions being Rhonda, California Girls, SLC, Let Him Run Wild and AYDCT)

RHONDA.

Totally. It's one of those songs you hear on oldies radio and never think about, but if you actually listen to Help Me, Rhonda, it will blow you away. The piano and electric bass on the bottom, the hooky guitars layered with vocals, it is so good. What a great arrangement.

I Know There's An Answer- the bass harmonica made it sound like Country Music to me; it put me in mind of Hee Haw and Green Acres (not that I don't love Green Acres, mind you). I just associate that sound with Country Music which I have little affinity for. I do love the song now though, as I love the rest of Pet Sounds.

I'd agree with this - As much as I dislike that tour and the performances on the whole, the Paramount 1993 boxset show highlighted how pretty it is. I think it's the drone aspect, so much of that song hangs on one bass note. Which can feel boring, but when it clicks the whole thing suddenly shifts round that drone and it feels great.

probably Wild Honey. Carl's voice seemed strained and a little jarring at first. Very un-Beach Boys.

Now it just blows my mind every time. BAD. ASS.

I would say as albums Friends and So Tough really grew on me over time, POB too.  On the other hand everything else (bar Dennis' stiff and maybe a dozen other songs)) post 1974 has really gotten worse and worse to me. I do still like TLOS and BWPS but things like MIU, 15 Big Ones, or BW 88 really sound a lot worse to me now.

Aren't You Glad - didn't like this song at all for awhile until I got Live In London - the live version is far better than the recorded version IMO.

There are many, but here's a few notable ones:

Grown on me the MOST:

All This Is That - I thought it was weird and silly when I first heard it in the early 90's.  Then I grew to like it somewhat.  Then a decade later it was in my top ten, then top five.  Now it has been my favorite BB song for the past year or so.

Surf's Up - - I first heard this on vinyl on a 70s compilation my dad had, before I had most of the 70's BB albums.  I wasn't ready for it.  Even when I did collect the 70's albums, I wasn't very into it.  Now I get goosebumps singing it in the car.  It hits a certain nerve with me...I just connect with it.

Took the LONGEST to grow on me:

Steamboat - I truly never heard the appeal of this song until maybe about 2010 or so, and I first heard it around 1994 or so.  Now I feel like I've discovered a new song!  Great stuff.

ALBUM that has grown on me the most:

Surf's Up - Initially thought it was too dark for my taste, now I'd say at least 3 songs on there are some of my all time favorites...Surf's Up, Disney Girls, Feel Flows.

That's funny...Friends and So Tough and POB I either instantly connected with (POB) from the first listen, or within 3 or 4 listens, and they were all instant favorites for me.

But I can relate to some albums really sounding worse to me than before (but I still like them overall!).  The ones that come to mind: BB85, Stars & Stripes, BW88.

I used to hate that song with a passion and made my opinion known on this board.

But it's grown so much on me lately. I can't wait till the end of that album when the last song plays  :thewilsons

I was only 12-13 when I first heard all the Beach Boys albums so that's probably why it took a while on those. By the time I was 16-17 I loved them.

Love You is the one that people said would grow on me but I like it even less now as there was much better stuff done in 1976 that never came out. I think "Don't Fight The Sea", Lazy Lizzie, You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Sherry She Needs Me, Sea Cruize, Come Go With Me, 10,000 Years, My Diane, Marilyn Rovell, are all better than most of Love You.  I mean compare "Love Is A Woman"  to anything Dennis was doing at the time. I like the same three songs I always have from it. Good Time (from their prime obviously), Night Was So Young, I'll Bet He's Nice. Ding Dang is ok but the rest just doesn't do it for me. I do like most of Adult Child though.

Back Home

I'm not a fan of post-1973 Beach Boys, but Back Home has grown on me. The first time I heard it, I hated it, but now I like it. Brian's gruff voice fits the atmosphere of the song, and the chorus is really catchy.

Most of this thread is blowing my mind and making me wonder what do Beach Boys fans like about them.

Be Here In The Morning?
Help Me Rhonda?
Love You?
Day In The Life of A Tree?
How She Boogalooed It?
Smiley Smile?
Summer Days and Summer Nights?
Little Bird?
Here Comes The Night?
I'll Bet He's Nice?
Then I Kissed Her?
Lana?

Wild Honey?
When A Man Needs A Woman?
Transendental Meditation?
Don't Go Near The Water?
Friends?
Aren't You Glad?
Surf's Up?
Steamboat?
Wake The World?
Surfer Girl?
God Only Knows?

What? These songs/albums had to grow on people? I don't understand anything.

Insanity.

That sounds like something I would be accused of :) but if someone says a song 'is growing on them' no foul.  There was a time when I wasn't a very big fan, just a casual fan of the songs I had heard as a kid.  Then I saw Mike & Bruce in concert, and was pretty much blown away.

Don't Worry Baby - was stunned by Brian's performance but not the overall song. Don't know how to explain, just didn't like it for awhile. Maybe it was too perfect for me.

Your Summer Dream - at first time I wasn't into this Surfer Girl cut because of its excessive sentimentality. Then, little by little, I started to like it.

Warmth of the Sun - another song that I didn't get. The melody seemed weird to my ears so it didn't appeal to me which is strange coz generally I like unusual and queer tunes. As time (about half a year) went by I quickly reversed myself and today it's in my favorites.

This Whole World - from the very beginning I was sort of indifferent to this little gem until recently I decided to listen Sunflower. Was I amazed by TWW!

Tears In The Morning, All I Wanna Do - the same as TWW

Please Let Me Wonder - I was choked up after listening the song, so I stopped playing it for some time. The record seemed too melancholic that I couldn't make myself listen to it. And, suddenly, I cottoned to this song.

I'm So Young - the same as PLMW.

wow your taste in the beginning of your beach boys journey was f***ed up...these are all amazing..i'm glad you realized it eventually.

I should probably never admit this, but:

Here Comes The night (Disco Version)

Y'know why though? it's got that groove, albeit a very artificial one, but does work best on the 7" version.

Other cuts include Smiley Smile (Heard PC SMiLE before hand), most of the early beach Boys catalogue (Pre-PS) and most of the later stuff. Come to think of it, the only 2 albums I used to play were Pet Sounds (My first one) and The Original Best Of The Beach Boys (UK version)....

but I liked WH after teh first playing, so there!

Bonus: I didn't find BWPS that amazing on the first listen - but I didn't know smile then!

It took me years, I suppose, to get into Ricky and Blondie's stuff but now I enjoy them. I can't help but feel they're still a little journeyman -- if they weren't credited to 'The Beach Boys' would anyone bat an eyelash? -- but the "Listen, listen, hear the music play" bit off "Here She Comes"is great. I think R+B should've recorded with Brian more, as they all seemed to have an ear for a good groove.

1. Surf's Up.

My brother once bought some Warner's compilation spanning 4 LPs. It was called 'Superstars Of The Seventies', and had anything ranging from Carly Simon via the Faces via Seals and Crofts to, yes, the Beach Boys.

I did not know what to expect, and was all into Rhonda, and California Girls, and suchlike. So I found Surf's Up rather subdued, introverted, and I missed a true intro, and was there a chorus? a bridge?

But I caught up. Now it is not only my favourite Beach Boys song, if I had to choose the one best song in all post-war popular music, it would be Surf's Up.

2. Diamond Head.

Don't know how I perceived it the first times around. Quality filler? Hm. Don't recall it that precisely any more. But today I dearly, dearly love it. Esp. the tricky rhythmic invention is so great. You can 'read' the rhythm in several ways, depending on whether you accentuate the percussion in your listening, or the ukulele.

3. TWGMTR. From 'fine' to 'classic BBs stuff'. Higher praise I do not know of.

Most of CATP still hasn't grown on me. Maybe one day I'll see the light.

Cottonfields (Brian's version) is the most listened song on my iPod, and one of my all time favorites. But initially I didn't like it, 'cos I first heard the CCR version, and found it boring and repetitive, country rock by numbers. But Brian's brilliant arrangement ultimately won me over, and I realized what a great song it is.

I, too, did not like it at first. My reaction was: This is not Beach Boy material. The lyrics didn't make sense to me. It just seemed out of place.

I like the current performance version better than the single version, actually. The Lp version rules.
