Well... the first known recording thereof was in 1973 with Spring. I'll ask someone who might know.
Did anything come of this, I'd love to know... It actually hadn't occurred to me that he might've learned the song during his childhood but that's certainly likely given its showing up in cartoons and being generally something of a folk standard. (I never heard it growing up but my mom, from her dad, did, for instance.) An unrelated query: Wirestone posted in the Sunflower review thread that Brian wrote some lyrics for "Deirdre" that Bruce didn't use. Did these turn up, modified or not, anywhere in song? Are the lyrics "out there" to be read if nothing else?

Bruce has quoted those lyrics, which were something like "I have a friend Bob/He has a job".

His contribution to "Deirdre" is where that gem of a couplet originates?! Well, I learned something new today!

Could someone please shed some light on what happened on the 1978 Australian tour? I've heard a few of my older cousins speak about how their friends went to these concerts and were really disgusted with what went down. That's about the extent of my knowledge, I know the reactions people had, but not the actions that caused those reactions - please help me fill in the blanks!

"A/S/L"? "Age:24. That's when Brian Wilson made Pet Sounds. Sex: Brian Wilson was having loads of sex with Marilyn when he made Pet Sounds. Location: Gold Star Studios, where Brian Wilson assembled with the Wrecking Crew to make Pet Sounds. Hbu?"

Oh jeez poor Carl. And then there was Brian.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1EPXBQV3yMRock music has gone downhill since then because Brian used up most of the rocking out that this universe has allowed us.

Jesus, I couldn't make it all the way through the drunken God Only Knows, that was just distressing. Brian during Roller Skating Child, on the other hand, rocks like a mother lover!

That wasn't even the low point of the show. The version of Darlin' from that show is almost scary.

Was Brian on "California Dreamin'"?, I'm sure I can hear him in the backing vocals (especially the Rock n Roll City mix) specifically the parts with the high falseetto ("I've been for a waallk", "On such a winter's dayyy" etc.)

What was Brian's relationship with Sly Stone? As I recall (I think I read it on this forum somewhere?) they were friends... or at least did drugs together or something? Related: Was Brian's using the Maestro Rhythm King drum machine influenced by Sly's use with it? If not, is there a story about how he came to it?

Might be a long shot, but does anyone know if any recordings exist of The Beach Boys live at the Whiskey A Go Go in November 1970 with Brian Wilson?

As far as I know, an audience tape from one of their nights at the Whiskey exists, but it's not the show that Brian played at. It's got the Flame opening and joining the Boys onstage for the encore, complete with Beatles and Stones covers.

Yes. One small problem: it's one of the worst audience tapes I've ever heard. On the standard grading scale of A to E, it would be roughly X-.

Didn't think it could get any worse than the Seattle 1970 audience tape! I wonder if there would be any reason for soundboard tapes to exist from either of those shows. That's what made me think it's possible that the show with Brian might exist. Weren't there supposedly shows in every year from '68 til '74 that Brian participated in? Whoever's got the tapes, now's the time to cough em up!

No. Short NW tour in 1970... three sets at the Whiskey November that year... couple of brief guest spots in the early seventies. None in 1968 or 1969.

Did Brian and Van write "I'm in Great Shape?" I always thought that it was a cover of an obscure standard... but maybe I was confusing it with "I Wanna Be Around?"
