Title: Special Walmart Exclusive Product for C50
Post by: Rob Dean on April 20, 2012, 10:21:59 AM
Coming out in the US on 1st May , looks rather nice and also includes the new recording of DIA , now does that mean that it won't be on the new album ??

May 1, cool. Like Bruce says, I 'll be like a little guy buying an album with all the cool stuff inside.  Can't wait. Isn't all this fun?

Very nice.  Looking forward to it.

Regarding DIA, I also wonder if it'll be on the new album.  At this point with this product coming out, I think it's down to a 50/50 chance.  Before this I would've definitely expected DIA to be on the new album.  Now...it might be there just as a "bonus track" and not actually part of the tracklisting...

Maybe ASDA will have it? They are part of Wall-Mart.

If any of you guys and gals in the USA are going to pick up any extras of these packs then I would love one, perhaps vintagemusic would get me one?

I doubt he's out spreading his warnings, the mob would likely have been onto him by now and he's sleeping with the fishes...

Back to topic, how much do these Zinepak thingy's cost? I expect that some enterprising souls will have these on ebay the day they are released.

A quick search reveals the price, a very reasonable $13.88 - http://www.walmart.com/ip/20678933 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/20678933)

I wonder if Asda will sell this, I really doubt it, but does anyone know if Walmart ship to the UK?

Small cracks in the Wall of Secrecy

(posted by Philip Cohen on April 20, 2012 at 2:25 pm)

Message:

Today, a few small cracks developed in Capitol's "Wall of Secrecy". A greatest hits-type disc containing the new version of "Do It Again" will be packaged with a magazine of Beach Boys photos & information, and this package will be offered exclusively by Walmart. The re-make of "Do It Again" will be exclusive to this package, and not included in a (possibly forthcoming) reunion CD. The Walmart CD + Magazine package will be available on the first week of May.

What say you to people who live out in the middle of nowhere, and the only capitalists who's opened a store near there is Wal Mart?

I just rally against the constant need on this board for people to be snobs.  O.K., she's fat.  Also she's wearing spandex.  Also she has a tattoo of Bart Simpson on her ass.  No need to ridicule her on a  Beach Boys board.  :)

I always hurl slightly upon hearing a band selling something exclusively through fucking Walmart. Okay, yeah, it's some folks only option as far as buying things - I'll give you that. There's no real excuse for this sort of thing, though. All it really does is cheapen the reunion a bit further.

I hate shopping at Walmart, but I couldn't care less where I buy my Beach Boys product.  It will sound just as good when I pop it in my cd player--just like the last Eagles cd did (a walmart exclusive for the 1st year).

I dunno.  I usually find the best prices on things I'm looking for, especially cds and dvds.  And if you're one of those people who like to get on a soapbox about store policies....well you might as well cross all stores off your list.  Just sayin'......

What’s a ‘ZinePak? (pronounced ZEEN-pak) It’s a new, fan-friendly format for great music. You get amazing songs plus an exclusive magazine filled with original, entertaining content—together in one fun, super-portable package. Because great music is most enjoyable when it’s paired with an awesome read.

The other property of a Zinepack is that it can't be downloaded for free from the web.
Same w/ the T-shirt/CD combos.

It gives the megalomusic company something to generate income with when sold at MegaloMart or wherever.

"Just one of those people who get on a soapbox about store policies"? What, now?

And there's a reason you find everything cheaper there - it comes at the expense of many other people's well-being, from their own employees to the less fortunate all over the world. Of all gigantic corporations in the world in Wal-Mart's position, they're by far the biggest offender. Do a bit o' research on the matter, my friend.

Critics of wal-mart don't like it for several reasons.

1. they don't have a union.  This really pisses off people who like unions, since Wal Mart represents 2% of the U.S. economy (they're the biggest employer in the u.s.).

2. they sell things cheap because they beat down their suppliers to the absolute bottom dollar... they'll bring in a company that makes t-shirts, and show them a t-shirt they can buy in korea for half the price, and if they can't match the price, they'll buy the korean one.

3. their stores and policies are boring, cookie cutter capitalism.

-----

Personally, I have no problem with them because I tend to lean libertarian.  Sure, they make all their goods in sweatshops, but people work in sweatshops because if they don't, they have no job at all.  That doesn't sit well with some people, but it's still a reality.

I happen to like capitalism.  Wal-Mart has put tons of moms and pops out of business, but it all started with 1 man, Sam Walton.  I don't hate him for kicking ass more than anybody else has.  What wal-mart can dominate with low prices, they can't possibly make up with quality, so if a mom and pop has better service or better quality products they'll still be competitive.

I'm also against unions, so that doesn't bother me.

I'm happy to shop at any store, but then again if you can't stand Wal-Mart that's your perogative.  Just don't hold your nose so high that you can't see how their super-cheap prices and convienent locations help millions of American families.  Also don't miss how everytime a Wal-Mart opens it's doors, you have 50 times the applications for jobs as what they can provide.  It takes a lot of work to get hired at Wal-Mart, people are dying for a job there.

Some more info on the “ZinePak.” The other 10 tracks on the CD are, as expected, the old hit recordings. This also seems to confirm once and for all that the re-recording of “Do It Again” will not be on the actual album and is apparently exclusive to this package.

1. Do It Again (Exclusive 2012 Version)
2. California Girls
3. Wouldn’t It Be Nice
4. Surfer Girl
5. Good Vibrations
6. Help Me Rhonda
7. I Get Around
8. Fun Fun Fun
9. Kokomo
10. Surfin' U.S.A.
11. Be True To Your School

About the Album

This commemorative 50th Anniversary Beach Boys release includes an 11-song CD, a collectible 72-page magazine and three exclusive postcards. The CD features an all-new recording of the hit "Do It Again" available exclusively on this release, plus 10 more of the band's greatest hits. The magazine includes dozens of rare photographs from the band's career and exclusive new interviews with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, and David Marks. The postcards can only be found in this limited edition package.

Say what you will, but Walmart didn't get where they are by just being there. People have to go in those stores and buy. They must be doing something right. Not many rich capitalists shop there to my knowledge. So, who makes this store chain so popular? Us, that's who. The average working class Joe's in the good ol' U.S. of A.

It may be a popular place. But, many people shop there only because Wall Mart eliminated the alternatives. Does, Working Class Joe realize that WM plugged the well of competition? Maybe you don't miss the water now, but you will. In the meantime, enjoy the low prices and drink up! And please, don't feed the employees.

I didn't say I agree with the Walmart philosophy, just that the customers themselves perpetuate the popularity of the company. If people turned away and refused to shop, they would go out of business.

a lot of people can only afford to shop at walmart. And in the more rural areas of the country walmart is often the only store within driving distance.

Yep, it is called demographics. They know exactly who they are catering to, which is why they remain so successful. Forty years ago or so, Malls and Supermarkets did the same thing to many town shopping districts.

It's not about who they cater to, it's about people being at their mercy at this point. Malls and supermarkets forty years ago was something entirely different.

The Beach Boys imo.

They are not just in small towns and rural areas. I live in a populated area with plenty of choices and Walmart outperforms many of their competitors. People here have choices and they still choose Walmart.

And don't forget that people that get jobs at Walmart can at least afford to eat Dog food, where the ones that don't have to live on the streets. And so what if more and more mom and pop stores go under, at least the Chinese and Koreans will be able to keep making their crap to sell at Walmart; heck, who even cares if all americans lose their jobs, as long as Walmart makes $$ and Ron is happy

I have to hand it to you americans. Your system is rubbish, people live in poverty and can only survive by going to the 1 Big American Patriotic Store - Walmart.

Get yourselves a welfare state. I live in Norway and it is truely the way to go, Northern Europe is all welfare states, and few if any are poor, an everyone is free.

To put it this way, not much 'We are the 99%" protests over here, apart from a very few London hippies.

The music section.. I've been with Wal Mart for 20 yrs. And all i can say is i have no problem
working there.. Over the years many of people have lost jobs but mine has always been steady.
If you want to make good money you have to work for it. In that respect this job is no different than
other. If you don't like Wal Mart that's your choice but it pays all my bills.

What a joke. Its not that making money is a bad thing. It's just people like Romney who were born on third and act like they hit a triple. It's a lot easier to be a "successful businessman" when your daddy is a millionaire.

1. Do It Again (Exclusive 2012 Version)
2. California Girls
3. Wouldn’t It Be Nice
4. Surfer Girl
5. Good Vibrations
6. Help Me Rhonda
7. I Get Around
8. Fun Fun Fun
9. Kokomo
10. Surfin' U.S.A.
11. Be True To Your School
Well that track listing is nothing to write home about.  I mean come on, any person the package appeals to will already have those songs.  This could have been an opportunity to uncover some rarities.

Yeah, I was going to stop on my way to work, but I was guessing I'd run into the same thing. Maybe I'll try this evening... at the earliest.

EDIT: I caved and did pop into my nearest Walmart (Bethlehem, PA) at lunch, and they had it on display in the music section. There were about five copies in a mount at the end of their tiny CD aisle. I walked right by them at first; I was surprised by how small they are (smaller than a Blu-ray case). Glad to have picked one up, though.

Listened to Do it Again in the car on the way to work, sounds like the video, of course.  Nice to have that for the collection.  The intro has been edited.  Thumbed through the book quickly but haven't read it yet.  Looks to be nice.  Worth the price.

As for the actual zinepak - I haven't been able to grab a couple yet, what happened with the intro for DIA? They cut it short? Does the track sound like it has been remixed since the promo version we heard? I am looking forward to hearing it in uncompressed CD quality.

I was back by the first store:  it turns out that Walmart was betting on a huge sale for these, so I bought the only two copies they ordered for this store.
With tax that was $15.19 each.
For those non-US that can't get it, I can mail it 1st Class package for $7.75. so $23 total. If you want it, send me a message and it can be yours. ( presuming I can find enough here to buy; I'll wait a few days to see if there's any response before I buy them)

However, if you're buyinig it for only for the rare photos, wait until there's a package that has some.

I picked mine up today.  Walmart did not yet have them out on the shelves but gave me a copy when I asked for it.  The "Do It Again" remake is exactly as it was in the video.  Doesn't look like it will appear on the new album after all so you'll probably want to try and order it from Walmart if you want it.  The rest of the tracks are a hodgepodge of hits--not sure if any of them have been newly remastered for this CD but I tend to doubt it.

From the 'ZinePak, page 42, concerning the new album...

Q- When did you start working on songs for the new album?

Brian- "I've been writing since 1998, so some of the songs on the album will come from arrangements and melodies I have been toying with over the years. I really like the song on the record called "Shelter", or at least that's the working title for the song as of now!"

(Guess it made the cut!)

I went in around 1pm, and couldn't find it in the CD section.  I asked a lady in the electronics section who looked at me funny and said that all the new releases were at the end of the aisle.  We walked over, and it wasn't there.  She asked a lady stocking books about it, and said, "Yeah, it's there, under the Beach Boys", and gave me a look like "IT'S THERE, DUMMY! (Are you really gonna make me walk over there to show you?)"  We walked over and I showed her that it wasn't there, and then she moved the 2 copies they had from the Bo Bice section to the Beach Boys section, and promptly walked away.  I bought 1 copy, and let my buddy Josh (who posts here too) know that there was 1 left, and he came by and scooped up the 2nd copy soon after.

So Beach Boys isn't the same as Bo Bice?  ::)

The Horror.

I wended my way through the (Westminster, CA) Walmart parking lot filled with older gas guzzling American cars and bashed up trucks.  Inside, the enfeebled pasty-faced customers plodded around: dazed-looking, most of them obese or even morbidly obese.  People with horrible tattoos or wearing clothes several sizes too SMALL, or several decades out of date.  Have you ever looked into the eyes of a Walmart shopper?  Horrifying!  People buying junk food and drinking sugary drinks.

Anyway, there were a total of 2 “zinepaks” (WTF?) filed in the Beatles CD section, and I bought one.

I paid cash and escaped the store without further incident.

BTW, my sister works at a Walmart, and it’s been the one stable job in her adulthood.

i found mine in the Beatles section too.

comes with 3 somewhat lame postcards apparently "designed by the guys" ...not sure if that includes the clearly-photoshopped wave crashing behind them.

still, it's a cool little collector's item! the CD marks the entry of 'Kokomo" into my music collection.

Got mine at a WalMart that was probably very close to the one Eric got his copy at, but this WalMart had 7 copies (at 2 PM) all in the New Releases end rack.  (It's even possible that more were in the regular CD section, filed under Beach Boys, or more likely Bo Bice, but I didn't check there!)

I found the greatest hits song selection to be disappointing, in that with the exception of Kokomo and the new recording of 1968's Do It Again, the other tracks are all from 63-66, even though above the track list it says "Limited Edition Career Retrospective."  Personally, I wish they would have dropped Be True to Your School and included a couple of deeper more esoteric tracks.  But the 'ZinePak itself is very nicely done, with 72 pages of photos, articles, and interviews.  Definitely a great way to market physical copies of music in this era of increasing download popularity.

In another thread someone mentioned that Summer in Paradise has been omitted from the album listing in the current Beach Boys 50 Tour Program, but it is included here.  I didn't see any photos or mention of Blondie or Ricky.

Also contains the news (if it's been mentioned elsewhere, I missed it) that the June 10 reunion concert at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee will be broadcast on a special YouTube channel, Bonnaroo 365.

Overall a very nicely done package, and easily worth $13.88.

Rather than drive all over town I called first.

Store #1: Black dude puts me on hold for 15 minutes, then comes back and says they don't have it.

Store #2: Indian lady puts me on hold for 10 minutes, then comes back and says something I don't understand but it sounds negative.

Store #3: Ah, a person who speaks plain english. She puts me on hold for 5 minutes, but returns with an affirmative answer. The store is out of my way but I make the trek anyway just to get this nonsense over with.

Since I'm running late for my night job, I reckon I'll just grab dinner inside the Walmart at the Subway. I enter and wait to be served. Middle Eastern woman with brainded hair down to the floor is in back room rummaging around (I reckon I'll find a few of those long hairs in whatever sandwich she ends up preparing for me). She sticks head out and yells something I can't decipher but I think she was saying she'd be right with me.

Three minutes pass. Finally she appears and trots down to the cash register. Oh good, she's going to take my order now. She grabs something, turns, and trots back into the store room. I wait another minute. She does not return. I leave.

Anyway, listening to the CD now. Very pleasant. Book looks fun and informative. Worth the hassle of going to Walmart.

some interesting quotes from the booklet...

Brian:
"The world has been very good to us. Very good. I love the world because the world is somebody to sing to."

"We have a song called Shelter, and it's all about the things you can do in your shelter, like make love, make phone calls... you know. Another of my favorites is a song called The Private Life of Bill and Sue."

When did you start working on songs for the new album?
"I've been writing since 1998, so some of the songs on the album will come from arrangements and melodies I have been toying with over the years."

Do you ever see yourself not making music?
"I don't think that's possible. I hear melodies and music around me all the time. It's natural for me to play around with ideas even if they don't ever see the light of day."

Mike:
"Carl Wilson's soul is inescapable when it comes to the sound of the Beach Boys. Carl's voice takes me back to Studio 3 at Western every time I hear it on a recording."

first musical memory: Watching my cousin Brian singing Danny Boy on my grandmother Wilson's lap at a Christmas gathering.

tour hope: To pull off some great a capella tunes with the guys.

With Mike Love masterminding a different set list each night, he gave the following insight: "I like to create the mood for the night. I design the set list based on the venue and what I want the sound to be."

If I could trade places with anyone for one day, it would be: Justin Timberlake

Al:
"I wanted to start performing live together last year because I just want as many people to hear these harmonies as possible."

If I could trade places with anyone for one day, it would be: Katy Perry

Bruce:
"I really miss Carl singing 'God Only Knows' as the lead vocal. On this tour I want to try to have Mike and me sing his part, and maybe they can bring his voice in a bit so we can all sing his part."

"We should get Brad Paisley, Jimmy Buffett, and Kenny Chesney and do a remake with us of Kokomo. It would be number one for sure; it's the ultimate lineup!"

If I could trade places with anyone for one day, it would be: Obama

Can you order it online from Wal-Mart?  Or do they only ship to the US?  I've ordered from the Canadian Amazon a time or two.  Just an idea.  My Wal-Mart didn't have any copies so I ordered it online.

I think it's interesting that they specify only the postcards are a store exclusive.  I assume the other parts could show up elsewhere?

I am mixed on the package. Brian clearly talked to the folks about 10 minutes and left -- everyone else (especially Mike) is quoted at much greater length.

The package is generally tastefully designed, heavy on the fun/sun, light on the Pet Sounds-Smile stuff. Given the lineup, though, I guess this is inevitable.

Mike says at one point he's obsessed with making this album a number one record -- which certainly explains some things!

I do think that in some ways not making Brian the focus of this reunion has been a wise move. They depended on him to make the record, but the other guys are carrying the weight of the promotion and touring. It's actually a familiar concept, even if that means we have to listen to Mike drone on about positivity. (I find myself softening on him, by the way. He does have an outlook, and that fun music is pretty damned timeless.)

it seems to be aimed at mainstream America, aka Walmart customers. country music and Katy Perry are mentioned multiple times, and the CD is safe and predictable. the Career Timeline is a little ridiculous as well:

When have The Beach Boys been anything but that in the past, what, 30 years or so? The safety and predictability is what continues to draw fans to the shows and numerous Greatest Hits packages that have been drawn from the same well of songs more or less since 1974.

For other fans who are drawn to the band for other reasons, I guess we got the Hawthorne disc and the Smile box set to satisfy the unpredictability thing... :)

I picked up my limited edition CD at Walmart tonight. At the entrance, I jumped over a wad of used gum on the floor, almost slipped on a fresh loogie, took a wiff of popcorn, and after squeezing by a 300 pound obese woman, got a clear shot and made a straight beline for the CD section. There weren't any CD's in the 'Beach Boys' section so I asked the 'mature' Asian sales lady if she had any, and she took me around the corner and showed me the CD's - they only had three. Sold to the minority white guy in aisle 14!! As I stared at the cover, she asked me about the music on it. She didn't recognize the songs but had heard of the Beach Boys before. Give that lady a dollar raise! Ooooooo........what a lucky man........I am!

I went to walmart after work tonight and they had a section for The Beach Boys that had a bunch of Beastie Boys and other 'B' artists in it. Wandered around the music section for like 5 minutes looking for it and didn't see ANYTHING. Didn't really have the money for it anyway, I just wanted to see it with my own eyes.

Is DIA better quality than the YouTube one? Is it louder?

I managed to get to Walmart this morning and was shot at by masked gunmen as I entered. I dived for cover behind the Beatles section, which was full of black people with coldsores. Dodging an elephant turd, I made my way down the junk food aisle, which had been specially widened for the hordes of morbidly obese asian-oriental capitalists.

I asked one of the shelf stackers if they had the zine-pak, and she punched me in the face and accused me of not being trashy and fat enough to shop here. I explained I was a Beach Boys fan, and she took pity on me, and pointed to the frozen pig aisle.

I finally found the zine-pak, which had been tucked into the generous buttocks of white supremacist wearing clothes three years out of date!

After having to queue for 17 hours, I finally managed to get out of the door, where I was promptly hit by a pickup truck being driven by Obama's health reforms.

Store 1 - 1  copy was found.  Bought it for $13.88 plus tax

store 2 - No Copies found.  Upsetting !!

Store 3 - No copies found.  - Really mad because I spent my time and more gasoline driving around!!!

This is indeed a limited edition release!  Glad to have the one I bought and to hear the 2011 recording of Do It Again!

This question says quite a lot about the staying power of the TV show "American Idol". I'll say no more, other than "Ruben Studdard"...

Bo Bice was a long-haired, country-rocker kind of singer who was on Idol and sang a version of "Vehicle" by Ides Of March that a lot of people liked. I don't remember if he won, but he had some visibility then got swallowed up into the Idol machine and beyond that I don't know.

After chuckling over a couple of posts in this thread, I ventured into a Walmart on Cape Cod.  Assuming (wrongly) I could locate it, myself, I cruised around the racks, finding one lonely Sounds of Summer.   The poor Fab 4 had Beastie Boys, improperly catalogued, among their stuff, but, suppose that it was at least common orthographic ground as between the two legendary groups.

Found a salesperson to check the inventory, he responded that they were indeed on the list, but uncertain as to where they were located, and he just threw up his hands.   I almost gave up, consoling myself with the $5 bargain bin.  An old black and white image in a corner of a CD caught me.  Carl.  on something called 10 Great Songs?  2009?

Glancing up and straight ahead, the  Zine pack was there alright, with the newly released stuff.  It might have had some promotional posters, as Adele's seemed to.  Maybe they were part of the delivery but did not make it to the store floor.  They seemed to have a fair supply.

Walmart takes some bashing but they do have some pretty reasonable prices.  Nordstrom's it ain't.  But, you can't buy a CD in Nordstrom's, so it all evens out in some way.

The little "zine" book is worth the price...Timely and retro with good sized print, lovely graphics and little vignettes...It is always a treat to open a new Beach Boys album (or whatever they call it, now) even in Walmart!   ;)

Once you get past the "creep" factor walking in the door, there are a lot of great deals.  It doesn't have to feel so stark and factory like.  They could soften the décor (or lack, therof) with softer lighting and friendlier color tones.

The employees do try, and are generally proactive, but they were clueless about where the Zines were.  If I was looking for Adele, or some "contemporary" music, there were posters which announced the location, directly below.  I was not the teen (even if I felt that way) in the music aisle anymore;  I was someone's mom, looking for 60's rock.  I wonder if Capitol printed posters to display alongside or above the Zine pack.  Very few brick and mortar sales points for music exist post mp3 technology, so Walmart is the place to go.

Capitol used to blanket stores with promotional material.  And, under the stark flourescent lighting, the tan color of the sand got "washed out" in one's visual field.  It was the wide spectrum red "The Beach Boys 50" which caught my eye.  Otherwise, I would have left Walmart after making "the pilgrimage" for naught.   I won't be going to another Walmart soon.

They might think they have sold out, because they can't find where they put them.

At least, where I was.   ;)

I'm aware of the population that this Zinepak is targeted toward, and it mostly delivers. It's largely pleasant fluff, but well put together, and highly skewed towards the Mike Love vision of the band. That's fine, but it will hardly endure as a cherished artifact of my BB collection.

...here's something I didn't know: it says David played guitar on Surf City.

I didn't know that either. The AFM contract says:

Billy Strange - guitar, arranger
Ray Pohlman - guitar, leader
Bill Pittman - bass
Glen Campbell - guitar
Carol Kaye - guitar
Hal Blaine - drums
Earl Palmer - drums

Easy to see where the problerm lies then, its that darn carol kaye taking the credit again for the playing of someone else

Sort of funny story.

I go to Walmart, pick this up, and go to a woman cashier, who, after seeing my purchase, says "Oh these guys are great.  Back in the 80's I saw them at Cayuga Fairgrounds. They were great."
She rings up the Zine pack, then a few seconds later says, "Yeah, these guys are good."  :lol

It must have sparked some fond memories of the band in her. I thought it was nice.  ;D

Damn... you met somebody in Wal Mart who shares something with you in common?  And they WORKED THERE?  Imagine that!  You forgot to tell us what her ethnicity was.

Does it matter? Or are you just being obnoxious again.

My AFM , dated 3/20/63, #59093 says something different:

Jan Berry (leader)
Hal Blaine (drums)
Ray Pohlman (guitar)
Bill Pitman (bass)
Glen Campbell (guitar)
Earl Palmer (percussion)
Billy Strange (guitar)

Jan would have also arranged his own sessions.

I believe AGD's. I wonder why it said David played guitar on Surf City.

My source:

"A handful of Jan and Dean songs used the group of crack studio musicians know as The Wrecking Crew, and Surf City is one of them. According to the AFM (Freelance Musicians) contracts these included: Billy Strange - guitar, arranger, Hal Blaine - drums, Bill Pittman - bass, Glenn Campbell - guitar, Carol Kaye - guitar, Earl Palmer - drums and Ray Pohlman - guitar, leader. There are in fact the unusual setup of two drummers on the tune, as Billy Strange preferred that sound."

Then I dug a little deeper and what did I find?

I found myself at Wal-mart today, I was visiting my family.

Anyways, I went to the electonix section, and in the main aisle they have a big display of new cd's.  They had one of the Beach Boys CD thingies displayed prominently.  (1).

So then I went back to the regular part of the cd section, and on the main endcap, next to Adele ( :) ), they had 1 more prominently displayed on the top shelf at short people eye level.

So then I walked around to the side, and the Beach Boys at this store actually had their own card, on their own 'block' of the shelf.  The only two albums they had though were two copies of one of the greatest hits cd's (the old one, volume 1 or whatever).

So, all in all, they were at least somewhat represented, lol.  The selection was shaky, but at least they were there.
