I have my doubts whether or not this "Sea of Tunes" is the same Sea of tunes that released the "American Band" batch of tapes - likely it's just a copycat booter - and clearly the All this is that material couldn't have come from that same source, as it's almost all 16 track tape (remember the Sea of Tunes ended on 20/20 because after that they switched from 8 track to 16, and the "copiers" didn't have access to a 16 track tape machine).  Nevertheless, it looks like there's some interesting stuff on these - hopefully the sound quality will be better than Get the Boot, which sounded like it was mp3 sourced.

For the record.... again:

Those old Sea of Tunes bootlegs did not derive from the "American Band" project.  I've researched that project thoroughly (we have all of the documentation as to what tapes were pulled for that film) and there's simply no way that they could have dubbed all of that material.

It's time to put that particular conspiracy theory to rest.

so where did the SOT stuff come from?

I've been out of the BB loop for a couple years, has there been any major boot released since Get the Boot/Secret Smile a couple years back? have I missed anything good?

Desmond Jones, anyone?  Someone with access to the vault tapes and who had someone cooperating who worked at the tape storage facility?  Or were these copied back when the tapes were at Brother in Santa Monica, and lots of people came in and out who could have borrowed or copied tapes?

Wasn't Country Air stereo mix played at the BB convention in NJ with other tracks that appear on this collection (Da Doo Ron Ron, Running Bear, etc.) by Desper and Boyd (not implying any impropriety on their part, my understanding is that security was quite tight at the convention and listeners had to use earphones)?

Unless someone at the convention snatched it off the computer when no one was looking - and we had security there the whole time - there's no way any of those things could have gotten out THAT way.  Everything was on a hard drive for that show - there were no CDs pressed.

There were dubs of many of these tracks floating around long before I came along, though.  And, sadly, someone stole a reference cassette from my home during an open house I held for out of town fans during one of the Carl Wilson Foundation weekends some years ago.  Which is why I'll never have one of those open house events here again.  I'm not certain, but I think some of those tracks may be on one of these CDs.  How disillusioning.

"The real heroes of BB history."

Yeah, right.

I'm outta here.

That's terrible that someone would do that to you, Mr. Boyd.  That's just crummy.
For someone to breach your trust in that manner is so low.  While I can certainly identify with the people who crave this kind of material, that's quite a line to cross.

Hopefully Alan can eventually make some of these tracks available legitimately (like for download through the BB website) and the Beach Boys can reap the income rather than let the booters make money off this material.

It's crazy, the strange underworld of tape trading and bootlegging, people must go to extraordinary lengths to procure these items.

I think that there may also have been a Best of Unsurpassed Masters set of 4 CDs from Sea Of Tunes in 2001 to cover the years 1962-1969. Disc numbers C0101-0104 were probably compilation discs from the full UM1-20 releases, but cannot be sure as have never seen or heard them!

Can anyone help with further details or track lists? Thanks.

Some follow-up. Assuming that the Best of Unsurpassed Masters compilation series is a genuine SOT release, the track list for the 1964-1965 disc (C0102 second disc of 4 ?, time 79:13) from 2001 seems to be:

01 Sandy [track only]
02 Sandy [instrumental insert]
03 Sandy [1st vocal overdub]
04 Sandy [2nd vocal overdub]
05 Guess I'm Dumb [take 23]
06 Guess I'm Dumb [2nd vocal overdub]
07 She Knows Me Too Well [1st vocal overdub]
08 She Knows Me Too Well [lead vocal overdub]
09 Please Let Me Wonder [1st vocal overdub]
10 Please Let Me Wonder [vocal track]
11 The Little Girl [take 15]
12 The Little Girl [insert vocal rehearsal]
13 We'll Run Away [instrumental insert]
14 We'll Run Away [1st vocal overdub]
15 All Dressed Up For School [take 9]
16 All Dressed Up For School [1st vocal overdub]
17 Good To My Baby [take 17]
18 Good To My Baby [vocal overdub take 4a]
19 Don't Hurt My Little Sister [stereo mix]
20 Don't Hurt My Little Sister [1st vocal overdub]
21 When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) [instrumental insert]
22 When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) [1st vocal overdub]
23 I'm So Young (alternate take) [take 12]
24 I'm So Young (alternate take) [1st vocal overdub]
25 I'm So Young [vocal intro session]
26 I'm So Young [1st vocal overdub]
27 Kiss Me Baby [take 9]
28 Kiss Me Baby [1st vocal overdub]
29 In The Back Of My Mind [instrumental insert]
30 In The Back Of My Mind [1st vocal overdub]
31 Let Him Run Wild [instrumental insert]
32 Let Him Run Wild [1st vocal overdub take 3]
33 Three Blind Mice [rehearsal]

Unfortunately can find nothing for the 1962-1963 (C0101), 1966-1967 (C0103), or 1968-1969 (C0104) discs. All a bit mysterious.  Anyone out there from Luxembourg with info?

I don't know if "Best of Unsurpassed Masters" was a genuine Sea of Tunes release or a copycat - wouldn't ultimately matter since all the stuff on it could have been just copied from the original Sea of Tunes releases.  I thought these never came out, but perhaps some of them did.

Incidentally, the two new Sea of Tunes titles are indeed from the original Sea of Tunes/Midnight Beat folks, who were busted twice - once in Miami if I remember correctly, and then later in Germany and supposedly put out of business for good.   Apparently they have been resurrected.

Glad you posted this Alan, you confirmed what i'd already been telling a few people, ie; no way did these tapes come from the "sea of tunes" people. Come on folks, don't you recognise the artwork style from other recent boots ?

Hope you're keeping well Alan.

Jeff
