I've always liked "Don't Go Near the Water" for several reasons.  I like the way how opening Surf's Up it sort of answers "Cool, Cool Water" closing off Sunflower (I like to believe this was intentional).  I like Al's vocal on the bridge and I love the harmonies on the tag which despite having little to no involvement in the song sound like classic Brian Wilson harmonies.
I know we were talking about harmonies, but didn't Brian play the piano on the track?

Anyone else notice that Surf's Up 1967 is noted as a 2012 mix? What does that mean??? Is it another take? Same track different mix? Or just a typo?

IIRC they found two different takes by Brian from the Wild Honey sessions. This might be that other take.

Actually I thought it was THREe runs-through that Alan and Mark found.

Whether three takes or four, the Smile sessions  67 Surf's Up was pieced together from several takes.  I assume a 2012 mix means they've reedited  the track differently from the takes available - it's not an alternate take in its' entirety because then it wouldn't be a remix.

Maybe they fixed that clunky edit at 2:05  Wink

That's what I remember reading. I think the only two Surf's Up tracks Brian had no involvement in were STD and Looking At Tomorrow.

Just pre-ordered MIC on Amazon. Although it quotes the price at £100+, they actually charged me £85.

Nice overview from spincds.com. My apologies if it's already been posted.

Made in California (6CD Box)

by The Beach Boys

One small problem with this - he's patently not heard a note of the actual set but wrote that from the trackliating and a passing knowledge with maybe a few forums. Thus, except for total newbies, this 'overview' is entirely pointless. "YLTLF", btw, is NOT a 15BO outtake, so how knowledgeable the dood is, is open to question.

Yeah, shame on him. You'd think he'd realize that the set is geared mainly to the casual fan, containing all the hits and deep cuts with some rarities. Oh wait, he does.

Geez AGD, you've done almost nothing in this thread but chastise people who aren't happy with the set. Now, someone writes a glowing article and you run them down. Guess some people just love to bask in misery.

All I can say is Fake Beard  LOL

Nope, he didn't write a glowing article - he just looked at the tracklist, and the press release, and regurgitated what he saw there: no insight, nothing to make you think. Rank bad journalism.

As for the chastising, sure, I think these people are ungrateful reprobates. Here's my advice for them - you don't like the lineup, or think it's too expensive, don't buy it. There - fixed that for you. Oh, I also take issue with some of the unfounded assumptions regarding the inclusion/exclusion of certain tracks that have attained semi-official status here. Going on past releases, I think the band are being credited with far more direct involvement than is actually the case. Think about that.

What I don't get is people complaining about songs that haven't been included that they've already heard and most likely already own i.e. Carry Me Home, Stevie, Big Sur, etc. Now sure, I get it, it'd be nice to hear songs like this with better sound, but if it's a choice between hearing a Beach Boys song I already own in better quality, or hearing a Beach Boys song that I've never ever heard before, well sh*t, I know which I go for... There's a lot of stuff on this box that none of us (except the insiders) have ever heard before, but instead of going 'Wow, Barnyard Blues, wonder what that's going to be like?' or 'Man, extended Meant For You - can't wait!', people are just going 'What gives? No My Solution?'. Assume the compilers know what they're doing and reserve judgement until you've actually heard this stuff.

But I don't think anyone has said, 'we should have Carry Me Home instead of Barnyard Blues'. I think people have said, 'Carry Me Home (for example) would have been preferable to a new mix of Brian's Back or to a session intro for Surfers Rule.'

The price is actually £83.67, with £16.73 VAT (well, actually actually 2p more than that at the moment, but that's what my order said before the 2p price rise). If Disney Boy has somehow managed not to have to pay the VAT, that would be right.

I absolutely agree. I'm going to start an online petition, and as soon as the box set comes out I'm going to give it a one-star review on Amazon.

Why wait ? Do it now - as has been pointed out here by far more knowledgeable fans than I, it's two-thirds hits anyway, so obviously no need to actually listen to it.

Just two questions about that list -- do we know that the live SIP is different from the legally released version? And is Surf's Up (2012 mix) definitely different from the Smile Sessions mix?

How many people who bought TSS actually played the vinyl? As someone who is not set up with turntables, I might as well have been buying four pieces of black plastic. Always felt a little ripped off by that myself ...

Actually, I played the vinyl first...starting with the two 45s.

I played the H&V 45, The LP [bar side 4] and the Vega 45. Then the CDs from You're Welcome.

I've played the LP many many mnay MANY mroe times than the CD or digital file.

And Apparently I have 9 Kokomo's and

Yeah, I went straight to the LP - then the first CD bonus tracks, and continued.

£100? Ooh... NO, I DON'T NEED ANOTHER CLUNKY BOX IN MY LIFE. Especially with the Nilsson one inbound. I buy much more and no-one will ever help me move ever again.  LOL

Heh. I've got the Nilsson box, a 4-CD live Zappa box, and two Monkees boxes all ordered and on their way, as well as this. My attempts to stop buying physical media are obviously not all that successful...

I wonder if all the tracks that weren't part of the latest remaster series have been remastered for this box set? Tracks from Friends, 20/20, So Tough, Holland etc.

On the tracklist, it does say when a lot of them were remastered! I'm guessing that they are 2001 mixes if they don't say otherwise.
