Title: I heard "________" in the grocery aisle.
Post by: ThyRavenAscend on April 07, 2014, 06:34:14 AM
I was at Trader Joe's the other day (a grocery chain, for those of you who may not have it), and I was immensely surprised & happy to hear "Breakaway" playing through the grocery store speakers while I was walking down the aisle!  Out of all the songs I've heard get some sort of airplay in the "public square", this is by far the most "unpopular" Beach Boys' song I've heard (though it was a single, of course, and was popular in some measure in some places at its release--but it has nowhere near the legacy as, say, "I Get Around").

So I wanna know: Which fairly "unpopular" Beach Boys' songs have you heard get play in public (e.g. in the grocery aisle, out pumping gas, waiting in the waiting room, in he dentist's chair, in the food court, etc.)?

Heard Add Some Music the other day in a store - just to make sure I told my wife, shut up so I could hear it better. Big mistake.  :p

A few years ago I heard 'Wind Chimes' from Brian Wilson Presents Smile at my local CVS store. It sort of freaked me out that I heard Smile music in my local drug store, lol. I once heard Your Imagination at the same CVS.

Great topic! It happens often.

I had a *killer* of a random BB's song experience in the past few months, but I can't remember what it was!!! Shopping in the supermarket, I'm thinking it was something kind of obscure from the Sunflower-CATP era that was a total surprise.

I heard "Sail On Sailor" in a convenience/minimart/gas station store chain called "WaWa" that only folks in the Philly area probably know.  :)  I work a lot from my car, ducked in to take a rest stop break, and heard SOS in the restroom.  ;D

I heard 'Til I Die in a supermarket once, and of all the stuff I think I've heard the most surprises in markets and the like coming from Brian Wilson Presents Smile, as someone else mentioned.

And I just thought of one this weekend from television, hearing "Long Promised Road" on an episode of the US version of the show "Life On Mars" was terrific...I loved that show, and they always found some great songs to add to the 70's atmosphere, songs which like "Long..." were not the obvious comedic or stereotyped "seventies" type of choices.

10 years ago I was in Bishop, CA, re supplying during my PCT hike. I went in as toque shop to browse as he owner had a lot of music on display, particularly Beatles. Asked if he had any BBs stuff but he smiled and said "no" which, being a Brit in CA confronted by lots of Beatles stuff I thought was a shame. Anyways I disappeared into the furthest recesses of the store. There'd been background d music playin throughout all this and suddenly Good Vibes came over the speakers … as I was leaving I thanked the guy but he pointed out that it was on the radio, not his choice. Neat coincidence and nice to hear as I was ofherwise deprived of my BBs fixes for 6 months during that hike.

Last summer I was waiting to meet up with some old friends at the Kanayama Train/Subway station in Nagoya, and they were apparently playing the 50th Anniversary tour live album in its entirety.

There's a UK radio quiz about the news which plays music before some questions to illustrate the theme.  About ten years ago it was doing a question about new nutritional guidelines and it played a healthy chunk of Vega-Tables.  I didn't know the song then but thought it was amazing.  Imagine my pleasure when I discovered it on Smiley Smile (hence my name).

I used to hear "Your Imagination" a lot. A friend of mine yesterday heard "Break Away" at a Shop Rite in Connecticut.

Heard "Make A Wish" on "Best Buy Radio" in the store when GIOMH was first released.

Probably the most surprising ones for me:
- A few years ago heard "Only With You" from the 2008 POB reissue at Myopic Books in Chicago. They were obviously playing the entire disc because I also heard the instrumental "Holy Man."

- I know this isn't QUITE the same, but...Christmas 2004....my wife and I took a trip to Chicago. We THOUGHT we had brought Smile with us. When we picked up the rental car, my wife took out Smile and...saw that it was just the jewel case -- the CD was still in our player back home! We were so pissed! When we were back at ORD waiting for our return flight, my wife said, "If I didn't know any better, I'd swear I'm hearing 'Song For Children' right now!" Then I heard it! The guy sitting behind us at the gate was listening to it over headphones! I walked over to him, flagged his attention, opened my jacket (revealing the Smile t-shirt I was wearing), and said, "Just wanted to compliment you on your taste in music."

- Where I used to live they had a car show every summer down by the river that was a block away. (They still do the car show, I believe.) Woke up to the strains of "In My Car" blasting from their speakers.

- And this has GOT to be the one to end ALL of it: some years ago when my wife and I were in a small store at the Jersey shore, they had a radio tuned to one of those easy-listening-to-not-scare-the-elderly stations. All of a sudden, we hear: "Judy, Judy, Juuuuuuuudy boppa Judy..." and I think I damaged the glass counter because of how hard my jaw dropped! They were playing "Judy" on that radio station!!! The clerk said that the station played that song a lot for some reason. Only explanation I could think of was that whoever was in charge of the music at that station wanted to keep costs low, get a Beach Boys CD for cheap, and found one of the dozens of cheap-o Morgan-era compilations.

The News Quiz goes in quite a lot for repetition of old material - look at Jeremy Hardy's jokes.  There must be a long-time fan in the News Quiz office who brought it out again.   Off to catch up with the new episodes now( I have them all on podcast).

Around a week ago or so when I was in Japan, I went to this local shopping centre. When I walked in, the song that was playing was to my surprise, Still Cruisin'. There was this group of people dancing in this small area inside, and they were dancing to that song. I didn't pay attention to them much, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Another time, quite a while ago I was at another shopping centre, and Isn't It Time was playing. I also heard the chorus to Help Me Rhonda while walking past a store in the middle of the city (Melbourne).

I mentioned this in another thread, but thought it would be worth mentioning here too because it was so random and amazing. Last night at the bowling alley, I heard "Hot Fun In The Summertime". I don't think I've ever heard anything off of the Summer In Paradise album in any public setting ever, and all indications pointed to that remaining the case. Little did I know that as I was getting ready to bowl with friends in 2014, that my theory would be turned upside down.

Not really a grocery aisle or the Beach Boys but it's somewhat relevant. I decided I'd test my local oldies station for the first time the other day and the first song that played was "Pray for Surf" by the Honeys. Held a sheepish grin on my face for at least a good half-hour.

Oooh....I was about to post one about the weekend, but remembered one from a few years ago, so I'll start with that one:

1) My wife and I were in Toronto in December 2011. One morning she had to go out to get some tea or something, and in the store she heard..."Child of Winter."

2) This past weekend my wife and I saw a new production of Hair in Chicago. (I'm not into musicals, but Hair is one of my obsessions.) As intermission was coming to an end, a cast member brought out a radio and turned it on. It was playing "Good Vibrations"...but...I thought there was something odd about it...the piano sounded a lot louder...but I dismissed it as just the sound being adjusted to make it sound like it was coming from a transistor radio....until I heard these magic words: "Hummmmmm-be-dum hum-be-dum, whoa-oh..." It turned out it was someone's custom-made edit of "Good Vibrations"! It sounded like the single version and possibly synchronized with another version in an attempt to make a stereo mix (even though it was only coming out of one prop radio speaker), with the hum-be-dums added in, and the ending VERY extended.

I kid you not - but I heard "God Only Knows" in a local grocery store in the evening of February 6th, 1998.  I had not yet heard of Carl's passing - but I've always thought there was something very, very cool about that.  Plus - it had to just be by chance - I don't think they actively program the piped in stuff that comes over via Muzak - so it wasn't like someone said, "Carl Wilson died today, let's play some of his songs".

I also once heard "Surf's Up" being played on the casino floor of the large Indian casino in Downtown Milwaukee.  They generally have an "oldies" mix playing - but "Surf's Up" still sounds a bit out of place in that setting!

about a month ago I heard Brian Wilson's version of "Surf's Up" at a local Pawn Shop.. everyone got quiet while it was playing..that used to happen back in the days when I hung out at bars and would play the Beach Boys version, everytime I would play it on the jukebox, everyone got quiet in the room... pretty cool experience...

It surprises me everytime I go to London how well appreciated and represented The Beach Boys are there. Greatest Hits record playing outside on the Portobello Road market, their records next to Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones, a lot of 7" singles in record stores, etc. In Finland you got to dig their records from the darkest corner of the shop, if there even is any. Though once Pacific Ocean Blue was playing in one big record store in Helsinki when I walked in. That was a true WTF-moment. But a great one.

Darlin was on Tom Petty's Buried Treasure show; he commented that "the late Carl Wilson sang lead on that.....a wonderful voice......he's also the guy who sang the Beach Boys' classic God Only Knows".

Hi everyone, this is my first post, although I have been lurking here for several years.  I used to post a lot on the Mike Wheeler web page (or whatever it was called) when I was in college.
Was in a store in Fredericksburg, TX, the other day and the In Concert version of Funky Pretty was playing!  Asked a clerk and she said the owner had a playlist that he ran over the speakers.  Still pretty neat to hear it.

Also was watching the movie Bubble Boy and heard Wouldn't It Be Nice twice, I had seen the movie before but not in years so hadn't remembered it was featured in the film. The film called Bubble Boy.

So....this was unexpected....

Emmanuel Goldstein (real name Eric Corley), who is the editor-in-chief of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, hosts two one-hour radio shows every week: Off The Wall on Tuesday nights on WSBU in Stony Brook, NY, and he usually discusses world news for that hour; and Off The Hook on Wednesday nights on WBAI in NYC, on which he usually talks about technology and hacking and stuff...

Anyhoo, on last night's episode of Off The Wall, he ended with the stereo version of "Pet Sounds." I've been listening to his shows since 2010, and I never once heard him even acknowledge anything Beach Boys until the most recent Off The Hook, in which he mentioned he learned about the psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators via the Beach Boys...

Craziness....totally unexpected!

I can't figure the connection between these 2. Am I missing sth. & either band covered another band's song? Did Mr. Goldstein actually mention how he got from A to B on that show?

Title: Re: I heard
Post by: 37!ws on October 23, 2014, 06:06:57 AM
No, it was right at the tail end of his show; he just said it quickly, signed off, and played the song, as if he were in a rush to get out of the studio. (He probably was...from what I hear, the current WBAI studio in Harlem is so tiny that they need to completely exit the studio in order to leave room for the next host(s), so they play music to fill what would otherwise be silence while the folks who do one show leave and the folks who do the next show come in.)

When I was at the Reds game a few weeks ago they played Don't Worry Baby on the organ before the game started.

This was a long time ago.

I attended my first Opening Day in 1994.  My hometown Orioles were playing the then lowly Kansas City Royals and took a 6-1 lead into the ninth.

The bullpen gave up some runs, and the tying run came to the plate.  When newly acquired closer Lee Smith was summoned to get the last two guys, the soothing sounds of Don't Worry Baby were played over the PA.  It must've worked, as Lee Smith recorded the last two outs with ease to secure the victory.

I love it when I have control over the music! At a coffee house La Jolla and a Japanese restaurant in Clairemont, I would keep rare Beach Boys stuff in rotation. One night, I waited on a young couple at the Japanese restaurant, and they asked me about the music. I think I was playing the 1993 Live In Lorelei boot. Turns out the guy was a big fan. I told him about the setlist archive and wrote down the link for him to visit.

We're kind of healthy? But we also sell booze and desserts (everything in moderation, right?)

One of my co-workers said he wasn't a fan of the Beach Boys, although he said he likes Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile well enough... Maybe I'll convince him.

Also, one of my customers recognized Heroes and Villains (the bonus version on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey).
It made me so happy! I guess his girlfriend didn't recognize it and then he went on to saying how Smile was this abandoned project by Brian Wilson and I was so happy that he knew about that! I told them to go watch Love and Mercy :D

a few days before Xmas I walk into a local 'upscale' tea (loose or bagged) store I'd never been to before, wondering if i'll come across a worthwhile gift for one of my son's girlfriends

playing over their (oldies radio) PA, I suddenly hear

"Loop-de-loop, flip-flop, Santa's got an Airplane...."

I knew immediately I'd find what I was searching for there, and let out a good laugh I'm sure puzzled most around me

Okay, I'll chuck one in.

I was in a mall a few months ago, and started thinking "I'd love to hear The Beach Boys."  There was no chance of that happening with the type of easy listening 80s and 90s hits playing.

Right then "Hold On" Wilson Phillips came on, nice and loud.  :)

I'm afraid I was unhappily thinking of Kokomo, Crocodile Rock...
To my taste, Wilson Phillips is a good step up from those.
Except of course that one Carl line in the chorus. I should sample that out and layer it into another song.

On the Sirius XM Underground Garage channel they played Hang On To Your Ego

On their 60s channel, mornings, between songs, can hear covers of BB songs in the background usually as the DJ's talking. The most common played is Lets Go Away for a While. Have also heard In My Room, GOK, Our Prayer, and Surfs Up. On the rare occasions without BB music the most often played is cover of Octopus' Garden.

Yep, I've heard that one, too - about 22 years ago, in the hallway at work. These days, it's all Adult Contemporary and Oldies, but in those days, it was still honest-to-God muzak. "Sail On Sailor" is another one I'd hear now and again. But I think I only heard "Surf's Up" that once.

Here, it's "California Dreamin'". Whenever they say "& now we'll play the BBs", I know what it is. These guys are living legends, yet the radio will seek out some long-forgotten band nobody heard of & play 5 various songs by them. Iron logic.

I work at a Metro Market in Milwaukee (modeled after Mariano's and owned by Bob Mariano) and they only play muzak over the speakers. I have heard Warmth Of The Sun and Surfer Girl, but I'm sure they play more that I've missed. I've also heard Junk (by Paul McCartney), Mother Nature's Son, When I'm Sixty Four, and many, many, other horrible instrumentals.

I also enjoyed discovering this short-lived Christmas themed thread from 2011. I'd be stunned to hear some of those songs in public! http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,11903.0.html (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,11903.0.html)

There's also a similar thread here, if interested...

Last year at Goodwill I heard Brian's version of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". I've never listened to his christmas album all the way through, so I didn't actually recognize it at first, all I could think was "wow, this is really awful".

On a better note, a CD One-Price Dry Cleaners was playing the BBs "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", which I stayed behind to listen to, even though I was halfway out the door when it started playing.

I was in a Coach store (of all places!) in the mall today and heard ... I'm not actually sure. It was one of the more obscure (and mediocre) songs from their Christmas album, but I wasn't sure which one it was, to be honest. I think it was either "Christmas Day" or "Merry Christmas, Baby." Or perhaps "Santa's Beard?" Or, did they ever do any Christmas songs that weren't on that album? At any rate I think it's the most obscure BB song I've ever heard in a public place, to the extent that even I didn't know which song it was! But it was definitely the BB's, and it was definitely a Christmas song.

CHRISTMAS DAY, not once but twice

first while pumping gas into my car at a Speedway about 2 weeks ago, over their outside PA

2nd, just last night while pumping gas AT THE SAME SPEEDWAY station!  Al Jardine's 1st lead vocal once again!

I guess if there's any time of year for that kind of coincidence to occur it is now (maybe the manager's a beach boys fan)

Over the weekend I had lunch at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville in Niagara Falls and they played not one but two Beach Boys songs! They were playing Sail On, Sailor when we walked up to look at the menu, and that was pretty much the deciding factor, LOL. Then during our meal they played California Girls! Maybe it wasn't an entirely unlikely occurrence for being at a restaurant where they have surf boards hanging on the walls, but since the only time I ever hear Beach Boys while out and about is at Christmastime, I was pretty jazzed.

I know Buffett is a big fan of The Beach Boys.  He recorded a pretty good cover of Sail on Sailor in 2003, and had included BB songs in his setlists.

I said to the guy in charge "who put this sh*t on?"

He said he did, looking all offended, expecting me to bow to the pressures of social niceties by being embarreseed and aplogising.

Instead I told him that putting crappy drum machine dance music drums.on Help Me Rhonda was very very wrong and should be punishable by immediate execution.
