I bought it at Best Buy in Houston yesterday...it was the only one they had.  Marked $9.99 but rang up $7.99.

BTW, am I missing something or is there no producer credit anywhere in the package?

I also think it's interesting that the first version with Tony Asher's lyrics was not included.

I ordered it at my local record store and it came in today. I payed 7 euros for it, it looks pretty cool, overall a really nice job.

I picked this up the other day and wasn't too pleased with it. Maybe 'cause I probably have all the sessions material excerpts on bootleg and it all kind of sounds the same after a while? Yes, it's neat-o, and a nice limited edition collectable, but for me I played it once (still can't stand the Hawaii live rehearsal of GV that was previously released as they played all the Hawaii material at a frustratingly slow pace)and tucked it away. Nice to have the original single cover atwork though...also on the Alan Boyd thread about this single they were talking about the alternate take (if I read it correctly?)being the "Rarities" version
but I thought I remembered the "Rarities" version was the one with actual lyrics "She's
been working on my brain" (or something like that). This version is just "Good, Good, Good Vibrations and the excitations line) and is really a working version than the other....the "Working on my brain" lyric version imho is the version that should have made it to this cd single. I like the original cover artwork, but hey....sorry, I feel a bit disappointed and maybe it's cause I've (as a collector) have heard it all before?

Any thoughts...?

I posted this in another thread. Hope this helps.

I did an interview with Brad regarding the Rarities LP for my old PetSite site. I asked how they got the version of GV for the Rarities LP.

PetSite: How did you get the go ahead to include the alternate version of Good Vibrations, especially since Capitol didn't have a copy in their possession and one had to obtained from the Best Summers Of Our Lives radio special?

Brad : In preliminary talks with Bobby Colomby (the ex-Blood Sweat & Tears drummer, then working as Capitol's Vice President of A&R Special Projects), I had mentioned the alternate Good Vibrations as an example of the kind of Capitol-era material that we might be able to find. He asked where it had aired and, in the course of answering him, I had mentioned that I had a set of the half-track reels on which the show had been distributed to radio stations. He told me to bring the tape with the alternate Good Vibrations out to L.A. with me, that there was a possibility we could actually use the tape as a source if we couldn't find a master tape for that version. My understanding is that Bobby checked with Capitol's legal staff and was told that Capitol had the right to release that version of the song -- regardless of the source -- because they had paid for the sessions back in 1966.

Capitol Engineer Bob Norberg sequenced and assembled the album directly onto VHS tape, using an outboard digital converter. Then that VHS tape went down the hall to Wally Traugott, who mastered it to vinyl and cassette masters.

The Rarities version lacked the lead vocal, but, as far as I recall (not listened to it for some good time) included the "hum-de-dums" and, I think, the fuzz bass break.

AGD you are quite correct. There were _no_ verse vocals on Rarities GV. The confusion probably came about when the first Smile bootleg in 1983 used the Best Summers of Our Lives verse snippets edited (poorly) onto the rarities version. This seems to be what Brian and co based their 2004 version on. To my ears anyways. Of course as AGD points out the fuzz bass middle 8 and hum de doo vocals were featured, as was a different set of chorus vocals and vastly different tannerin. If you listen closely you'll hear the cello mixed significantly lower as well.

How does the "GV" single compare with the Pocket Symphony boot ? Allegedly that contains parts of the proposed 70-minute "GV" CD that was going to be the bridge between The Pet Sounds Sessions and a Smile box.

I picked up the GV extended play cd at WalMart. Just got a new cd player in the car,and my compliments to Mark Linett and Capitol, the versions sound great. Whether I have this stuff on bootleg or not, I will buy it and give copies to friends. These copies the artists and composers will get paid for. Please release mor BB product like this. I for one will buy it.

Peter has, as usual, cut straight to the heart of the matter. I have more versions and fragments of "GV", legal and less-so, than any sane person should really possess, but I'll buy this release, just as I bought SOS and the last four UK compilations. Why ? Because I'm a fan, and that's what fans do - buy the releases, support the artists. Of course, having laid out my bucks entitles me to comment on the product, and the band in general, because I'm funding their lifestyle... but that's just a small plus.  Roll Eyes

Know what you mean: Sounds of Summer US release; Sights and Sounds of Summer (US)*; The Platinum Collection: Sounds of Summer Edition* (UK, 3CDs); Sounds of Summer (1CD) UK release; Sights and Sounds of Summer (UK)....   and I know there are more out there (Japan has its own for example)  that I don't already have or have pre-ordered.

But do the Beach Boys ever return the favour and support ME by buying my hiking magazine...? Do they flip!

*On the strength of these I'd expected a Platinum Collection: Sights and Sounds of Summer edition... maybe that'll come in October.

For me, the reason to own this (apart from the cool artwork) is the magnificent true stereo mix of the backing track; that's mindblowing. I'm just a tad surprised, by the way, that they used the stereo mix of "Let's Go Away For Awhile" to represent the B-side of the original single; I would have thought the original mono mix would have been more historically accurate.

So I have this straight:  the stereo instrumental mix is a new one for this CD?  Is it significantly different from the one on the 1993 GV box set disc 5?  That's the version which has several session excerpts, Brian's guide vocal using most of the Asher lyric from the second line on, and the hum-be-dum section in the same place as the 2004 Smile version of GV.  The stereo mix of the B-side is also new, I take it.  Also - was it HDCD encoded like most of the recent Mark Linett-supervised remasterings?

According to Mark Linett, the stereo mix of the instrumental backing track is new (according to the back cover, the track was digitally mastered in 2006 along with the alternate take whereas the other tracks were mastered in 2001); apparently, the version found on the GV Box was not true stereo all the way through according to other posters here, although I've not heard it in a while. The stereo mix of "Let's Go Away For Awhile" is the same one from the "Pet Sounds" stereo mix (remastered in 2001). Not certain about HDCD encoding; there's no mention of it on the case.

Thanks for the reply, most helpful.  You're right, the 1993 sessions mix is only stereo in sections.  On the HDCD thing, I should explain:  The HDCD encoding is sometimes credited (see the 2001-2002 CD twofers), sometimes not or not obviously (BWPS, Walking Down the Path of Life).  The 2004 "Christmas With the Beach Boys" is not HDCD.  The only way to know for sure is to play the disc with an HDCD decoder box or on Windows Media Player and see if the HDCD indicator appears.
