Title: To have a complete SMiLE collection (10/13/11) *UPDATE to session inventory"
Post by: changeng on August 31, 2011, 11:39:37 PM
Hokey dokey!

This is probably a good time to start a thread of what discs you SHOULD have to claim a complete SMiLE outtakes/bootlegs/extra tracks collection.  If this list exists elsewhere (and more complete) , please chime in.

Since we're two months from TSS, let's make sure everybody is as up-to-date as possible!  I haven't been on the lookout for several years - if I'm missing something, let me know.

And if anyone wants to get REAL specific (as to which tracks are on what) please do!

30 Years of The Beach Boys  Box Set
Pet Sounds Box Set (for the Good Vibrations tracks, in case you don't want the separate GV box set)

Vigotone - cd version of the old three vinyl lp set
Secret Smile
Unsurpassed Masters 18
Heroes And Villains Sessions parts 1 & 2
Heroes and Vibrations
Project Smile for the fun of it

Am i missing anything?

Unsurpassed Masters vol 18 is the Alternative SMILEY SMILE album. You better pick UM 16, 17 & 18 (Good Vibes box, SMiLE, and SMilE sessions box)

I did some research and looked at all my bootlegs and I think I may have a complete Smile collection by now. This is what I have:

Best Unsurpassed Masters (CD 4) - Unique Vega-Tables (and maybe Good Vibrations) mixes.
Heroes And Vibrations
Smile 1988 Mark Linet Rough Mixes - I think this one doesn't have any core tracks on it, just noise reduced Vigotone mixes
UM 15 - GV Sessions
UM 16 - Smile - For some stereo tracks - DYLW, TOMP, HGS, WF, CIFOTM, Look take 3, IWBA, WC/MOLC/Water Chant
UM 17 - Smile Sessions
UM 18 - Smiley Smile
Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2 - Some unique sessions/other parts
Heroes And Villains Sessions - Vol. 2 - This one seems to be available mp3 sourced only. I have found a flac version, but that seems to be mp3 sourced as well. However, the mp3 and flac discs are different in mastering, so both are needed for a core collection I think.
Psychedeic Sounds - Includes IIGS and All Day sessions (mp3 sourced)
Secret Smile - Various core tracks, Cabin Essence sessions, rough mixes, and upgrades for some Archaeology tracks.
Archaeology - Some unique tracks, like stereo HAV outtakes
Smile (Odeon) - Probably nothing special on this, only some alternate mixes made by the bootleg label itself I think.
Smile (Vigotone) 1st version. - I found two versions of this, and "version 1" seems to be the best source.
Smile Sessions (Sea Of Tunes Source Tape) - Again, some unique sessions/tracks.
Project Smile - For some small bits I don't have anywhere else.

And for official releases, you need:

Smiley Smile/Wild Honey
Friends/20/20
Sunflower/Surf's Up
Good Vibrations CD Single
Good Vibrations Box Set
Pet Sounds Sessions Box Set (for GV)
Hawthorne, CA (Stereo mixes/GV/With Me Tonight)
Endless Harmony (Good quality HAV/IIGS/Barnyard demo)

I think this seems to be all, if I missed something, please add it to the list!
Paul

Thanks, guys!  Was asleep last night when I started the thread.

Is there any place online that some kind soul has taken the time to actually detail what is on each cd/lp that is necessary?

Fr'instance, where a song is listed, what version, and where to find it?

Seems like a good thing to do, so the geekier of us can put a pseudo-library reference together, including the new stuff once we have it.

like A Big Bag of Vegetables, I guess!  ;D

You could add Long Lost Surf Songs Vol 2 – that was the first place I heard the faint "Sunshine" lyrics on "False Barnyard", though they're near-as-damn-it inaudible and incomprehensible.

There was a similar attempt at this idea a couple of year back:

The False barnyard lyrics are on Secret Smile as well, and possibly in better quality on Project Smile.
I would  be interested in such a "Smile complete" project, a bit like Purple Chick's Beatles Deluxe Editions. We could try and make a list. I once compared the BBOV list with my collection and I could find almost every track, with two or three exceptions. And there were a few tracks I had, but weren't on the list.

This is kind of off topic but I've wanted an answer on this for years.  Best of UM is the only place you can find the track for "Shut Down" correct?

On-Topic: There is a document entitled "SMiLE Just The Facts" which is essential reading about what exists as far as SMiLE recordings.  It tells you where everything can be found and does side by side analysis of tracks so you can see what overlaps where.  The only issue is I don't believe it was even updated to include the releases of "Secret Smile" and "Psychedelic Sounds" but since most of the recordings released on those collections are unique to those collections it might not even matter.

Hi JohnMill, unfortunately I wouldn't know whether that track is only to be found on that bootleg: I only have disc 4.

On topic again; I know that document, it was online at the Smile Shop web page.
Does anyone know how up to date the BBOV tracklist was? To my knowledge it was pretty much complete. I can try to post the tracklist (one disc at a time) and the source for each track listed. Anyone will be free to add related tracks, suggest different sources and discuss it.

My first attempt at disc 1. It is by no means complete, there are some tracks listed that I couldn´t find with a quick search. Please participate and make the list complete! By the way, disc 1 and 2 are by far the hardest, the HAV sessions are hard to follow and they are featured on almost every bootleg, some parts multiple times and from multiple sources.

48. H&V Tag (alternate vox)
49. H&V Tag (vox stereo mix)                  UM 17

I didn't pay attention to lossless/lossy, just which versions sound the best. As you see there are still some tracks i didn't find in my Smile collection.
They are:

4. H&V verse (takes 2 & 3)
23. H&V In the Cantina (session part 3) - I found two sources of sessions, maybe I am missing something?
40. H&V dit dit dit hereoes and villains (session part 2)   - I found two sources, but one is longer and the other is higher quality audio.
Track 28 (Archaeology) has a slight variation at the end ("it's dum") but otherwise track 27 and 28 are only sound quality upgrades over the Parts 1&2. Maybe that scounts as two parts of sessions, otherwise I am missing something.
48. H&V Tag (alternate vox)   - I didn't find this one.

Tomorrow I'll try to complete disc 2.
Thanks for helping,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Did you ever get any further with this? I think if you can figure out disc 2 and get all the H&Vs sessions worked out the rest will be much easier!

I'm interested because I've set up my own playlist of every smile recording I can find - in chronological order just to make things more difficult! It's surprisingly listenable, and makes you realise just how much is out there already when you put it all together.

It's by no means definitive - it's constantly being tweaked when I spot duplicates or something which is in the wrong order, but I'd be happy to offer my help if you need any.

I do have an old post from a smile thread on the 'record room' messageboard (which doesn't seem to exist any more), where someone lists the circulating sessions and what releases they appear on. It seems to pre-date the H&V sessions 2 boot, but I still found it really useful. I can PM you the text of that if you don't already have it (or post it here).

Rob

Keep in mind, a lot of the dates here most likely will change once the box set comes out and we have time to go over everything on it. A lot of the Heroes dates are most likely wrong.

Hugh,
I thought no, but recently I've found the 'SMiLE - just the facts' document at http://www.alphastudio.com/recordroom/

According to that there are a few unique GV tracks on the 'heroes and vibrations' boot. I've not checked them yet though.

Hi The Real Beach Boy, is everything from the actual BBOV tracklist in your list, or everything from the 12 CD "The Smile Sessions" tracklist earlier in the thread? I think the latter is a more complete.
Thanks,
Paul

Yes on both counts. A lot of those tracks on the 12 CD set are duplicates, fakes, fan edits, or not Smile sessions.

For lack of anything better to do till I have a job, the last couple days I've been cutting and pasting and putting together the sessions as per The Real Beach Boy's list...curse Brian for doing the easy stuff first, labeling and separating Look and Wind Chimes was easy, but once you get to Cabinessence this has become a full-time job...I finished up to Heroes and Villains and have immediately started dragging my feet because I know that's going to be madness, maybe I should just wait till the box comes out...

Keep in mind, however, this list is most likely due to change when the box set comes out. There are some titles on the box set that have me thrown for a loop. Expect a new update on 11/1. Most likely half of the Heroes stuff will be reordered.

I have been working full time and spending time with my family. And yet I have felt compelled to compile all of this material for a long time.

So I started about a week ago and have been doing it my spare time. Luckily I have most of this in lossless format to work with (of course some of that lossless material is sourced from lossy but I can't be too picky. But the cool thing is how I have been editing it. First off I've taken every take and rehearsal and made it it's own separate track (for instance the tracking sessions for "Cabinessence" total 41 tracks from 1966/10/03!). I have eliminated all dead space at the beginning or ending (even sometimes in the middle) of dead space. I have gotten rid of a couple of nasty pops from "Holidays" takes 1 - 3. I'm generally improving the quality as much as possible without fucking with it too much (noise reduction, compression, etc.). I want to have this done before I get my box on the 1st so I can work all of that material in as well and change the dates, etc. to make the ultimate set of as much as we will ever have of these sessions. But I am stuck on a couple of things:

01) Unbooted tracks. such as this one (the first one I encountered):
from 12-6-66 "Cabinessence" Chorus vocal overdub, from acetate (mono) (0:29)
This has to have been something I've at least heard before. But where from? It's not on any boot? Not even Prokopy tapes or anything? This burns!!! Especially knowing that I will stumble across more obstacles like this many more times. Damn it!

02) I want to mix in the "Good Vibrations" sessions as well. I have SOT Unsurpassed Master #15, Pocket Symphony, Heroes & Vibrations, etc. What else am I missing? That could take a long time just to get that in a proper order.

I'm still going to continue working on this however. And I'm releaved to see I am not alone in attempting this project. Maybe we could all exchange notes via private messages or something. Anyway, I just got home from work and I'm going to start editing some more while my family is still asleep.

Joy!

 ;D

Thank you very much (and to Craig)! Ill be working on that as well.

Been going through this and I have been having some setbacks and other odd things with this list. I've been having some fun with it too. Like for instance there is a great sounding (yet edited) track or "Prayer - Rehearsals" on Archaeology that I was able to edit with the between and after stuff from Vigotone. Nice fun, but I'm sure a better version is making the rounds somewhere, just not here.

I found that the "unbooted" takes 8-10 are on the SOT Source Tape. Not that I have gotten that far yet. I last left it working on "Child Is The Father Of The Man". And I found out that there were only 6 takes of the verse (not 10) and that take 6 was miscalled as take 5.

I'm getting sleepy having worked all night (dealing table games to a bunch of assholes in a Las Vegas casino) but I'll get back to it again tomorrow. Thank you for the information on "Good Vibrations". I think I will make a second and third box to supplement the grand one we're getting in a few weeks: the second one of outtakes of the outtakes and the third (which I will listen to least) the talking bits or "Psychedelic Sounds" if you will. Why not have 3 boxes? I'm sure I'll reach for the 1st (official) one more than the others. But I have fun going through this bootleg stuff because, man, this music transcends pop into a whole different bag. Far out.

Cheers

P.S. If anybody is making their own set, feel free to PM me so we can discuss it.

I think it would be nice if we can make a list of all the essential Smile tracks/recordings/mixes we already have, but aren't present on the new box set. People can compile that list from their own collection and then have all the essential Smile tracks on two sets: one official and one 'extra'.

That's actually what I plan to do when I get the box set all squared away and listened to and studied and what have you. The original list that I posted here (and have been updating every so often as part of my BBs audio project) took at least six months to properly articulate and organize by auditioning tons of audio material. I was "doo-yoob"ing in my sleep half the time!

Thanks for keeping the list updated; I'm following this thread closely!

I'm trying to trim down my smile playlist to match your list.
There are some tracks from the UM. 17 box that don't seem to appear on your list - are they duplicates or do they belong to a different session? They might be on the list somewhere and I'm just missing them but I've looked quite closely and can't spot them. They are:

   01/17 – Heroes & Villains (Part 2, Takes 1 & 2)   1:40

   01/18 – Heroes & Villains (Part 2, Takes 4-8)   2:35

   01/19 – Heroes & Villains (Part 2, takes 14-15)   0:33

If you could clarify where these belong I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again!
Rob

Brilliant, thanks (The Real Beach Boy)! I don't associate that song snippet with the old master painter sessions so didn't think to look there.

Hi, thanks for your updates. I'm wondering why you are calling all sessions and mixes Part 2. I thought Part 2 would we Barnshine, and part 1 the actual TOMP/YWMS.

Further there is one small thing: the stereo mix is actually on UM 16, not 17.

(O, and another: Barnshine with vocals is available on Secret Smile, but as a different mix on Project Smile, with the vocals much clearer and the instruments more on the background).

Thanks again!

"Part 2, stereo mix" is the same track as track 13 on disc 1 of SOT 17. There is nothing of the sort on SOT 16. I refer to "Barnshine" as such to differentiate it from the other "Part 2" tracks in the list, as the other Part 2 mixes do not have the buried lead vocals.

Hi, something else I noticed: you mention one mono acetate mix for CIFOTM, and one stereo acetate mix. I think the stereo version is mono as well, but just in bad quality so that it sounds a bit like stereo.

For the record, I split the inventory posts into their own thread, which I am going to lock. Any discussion is to be posted here. I will edit as necessary.

This thread is going to be un-sticky'd. However, let's try to keep all of the nitpicky (good nitpicky) comments about the inventory in this thread. Any new threads started will be merged with this one.

A question and a comment:

The music known as "False Barnyard" was a part of OMP/YAMS originally instead of H&V?  It was then popped out at some point for H&V (Cantina Mix) correct before Brian just decided to re-record the fade all together (Fade re-record 2-28-67)?

My comment is on the Psychedelic Talk as found on SOT 14.  I don't believe this is in any way a SMiLE era recording and in fact dates from a "Pet Sounds" session.  The reason I say this is because I vaguely recall playbacks of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" occurring in the background as Brian and his pals chatter away.

On the first statement, yes on both counts.

I also had reservations on the Psychedelic Talk thing as well. I've heard conflicting reports from people who claim it's from Pet Sounds and people who swear up and down it's a Smile recording. I've not heard definitive proof either way, so it's still up in the air.

Hi TheRealBeachBoy. Today I started looking at one track at a time, and I will post my comments/thanks and suggestions here. First track: Wind Chimes.

The 1st vocal overdub (from UM 17) is available as Assembly with vocal on the SOT Source Tape, in less good quality, but very slightly longer at the beginning and the end.

The ending take 3 is available from 3 sources: UM17 (best quality), SOT Source Tape (less good quality, still stereo) and Secret Smile (mono). UM 17 and Secret Smile start at the same point, but Secret Smile lasts 7 seconds longer. Source Tape stats later, lasts longer than UM 17 but shorter than Secret Smile. But it is in stereo. So, eventually all sources might be essential.

Futhermore there is a track on the SOT Source Tape called Wind Chimes (session) which is a not so good quality compilation of sessions also found on UM 17 (from takes 1-5). However, there are some small snippetts of sounds/instruments etcetera in between the takes that is not on UM 17, so I think it might be essential.

(And a small typo - Mark Linett 1988 mix (mono) (2:31) should be Mark Linett 1993 mix (mono) (2:31). The Vigotone mix is from 1988 I think.)

Thanks,
Paul

Regarding the Prokopy Tape entry for Cabinessence

12-27-66

Tag, vocal overdub attempt (mono) (1:38)
Chorus/tag vocal overdub (mono) (1:46)
2nd chorus "Truck Drivin' Man" vocal overdub (stereo) (0:43)
Mono mix attempt (mono) (3:22)
Mono mix (mono) (3:31)
Mark Linett/Alan Boyd 2011 mix (mono) (3:32)

Available on Secret Smile (tag, vocal overdub attempt, chorus/tag vocal overdub, 2nd chorus "Truck Drivin' Man" vocal overdub), Prokopy Tapes (mono mix attempt), 20/20 (mono mix), The Smile Sessions 5-CD (Mark Linett/Alan Boyd 2011 mix) (Note: Chorus/tag vocal overdub is also on Brian's comp reel tape from December 1966)
=============
Going from memory of the linear notes for TPT from back in the day where I was researching this stuff like crazy, The Prokopy Tapes contain five versions of "Cabinessence".  They are as follows: The 20/20 mix, the instrumental (track assembly) from GV box set (disc 5) and then three deviating versions all found on the VigOtone bootleg.  Apologies for the unsophisticated identification but to my knowledge these mixes were a) doin doin b) instrumental coolie c) vocal coolie.

Are one of these deviating mixes what you are indicating above?

I will have to review this when I get home from work. I was unsure whether to include it or not on the list but it seems to merit a re-examination.

That mix is what was released on the box set. It was confirmed to have been made in 1988.

No. This mix runs 3:22 and is on the Prokopy Tapes. The description of the track is below.

Quote from: Dave Prokopy
"Cabin Essence" [early version #3] (B.Wilson/V.D.Parks)
recorded: 3 & 11 October, 6 & 27 December 1966
source: bootleg [mono]

The final work done on "Cabin Essence" during the SMILE sessions consisted of Brian adding his "doin-doin" vocals to the "Home On The Range" section of the song.  One final test mix for the song was done, which can be heard here.  Note that this mix features all of the elements of the eventual 20/20 release, in order.  (Curiously absent is the "over and over" lead vocals, which had presumably been recorded by that point!)  Also listen for the stray whistle sounds and other miscellaneous chatter.  It's unclear whether this existed on the original tapes, or somehow "migrated" (via poorly-erased tapes during the bootlegging process) from other SMILE tracks.

So all that remained to be recorded at this point was the lead vocal on the "Home On The Range" sections.  This was done by Carl in 1968, presumably along with the vocals for the "truck drivin' man" section.  It's not exactly clear who sings that section, although Dennis lays claim to it in an interview: "On 'Cabin Essence,' there's a line in there--'truck drivin' man'--which I sang. [...]  It's mixed way down in the track and it's syncopated all the way through."

I've been wanting to point this one out:

12-27-66

Tag, vocal overdub attempt (mono) (1:38)
Chorus/tag vocal overdub (mono) (1:46)
2nd chorus "Truck Drivin' Man" vocal overdub (stereo) (0:43)
Mono mix attempt (mono) (3:22)
Mono mix (mono) (3:31)
Mark Linett/Alan Boyd 2011 mix (mono) (3:32)

Available on Secret Smile (tag, vocal overdub attempt, chorus/tag vocal overdub, 2nd chorus "Truck Drivin' Man" vocal overdub), Prokopy Tapes (mono mix attempt), 20/20 (mono mix), The Smile Sessions 5-CD (Mark Linett/Alan Boyd 2011 mix) (Note: Chorus/tag vocal overdub is also on Brian's comp reel tape from December 1966)

I chose to not include this at all. It's totally a stereo mix (try your headphones) and has a 1968 lead vocal. What is this about a mono mix on 20/20???

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out. That was from the original draft of the sessionography, and I had forgotten to make the change.

For the record, I made some edits to make note of work done on Smile tracks done after 1967 for later releases.

Thanks for your reply. To be more specific: there are unique sound/instrument/studio snippets at 1:50 (very soft, after take 3); 2:36 (just before Take 5, the end of it is audible on UM 17). Hope that helps.

I looked at your 'Wonderful' list and saw this:

12-15-66

Group vocal overdub master take (stereo) (2:19)
Group vocal overdub mono mix (mono) (2:05)

Available on Secret Smile (group vocal overdub master take, also on Vigotone 2-CD in lesser quality without the count-off), Vigotone 2-CD "Smile" (group vocal overdub mono mix)

"Yodeling" vocal overdub session.

The only vocal Wonderful track on Secret Smile is in mono. And the "Vigotone 2-CD in lesser quality without the count-off", isn't that actually the second track in your list, the Group vocal overdub mono mix (mono) (2:05)?

Thanks,
Paul

Another suggestion.

From the list:

CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN

10-7-66

Chorus, takes 1-6, 8 (stereo) (7:04)
Verse, takes 1-8 (stereo) (2:30)
Track assembly (stereo) (0:53)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 16 "Smile" (track assembly) as part of track 8, Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" (chorus, takes 1-4, 8, verse, takes 1-6), SOT Smile Source Tape (chorus, takes 5-6, verse, takes 7-8)

This is an early backing track session. Brian revised it a few days later.

It is clear take 1-4 and take 8 of the verse are on UM 17. SOT ST (Source Tape) seems to add take 5, and the count in of take 6. They add up to about 7 minutes indeed. However, I'm not sure I can find take 7 and 8 of the verse. Is that the piece between Chorus take 6 and take 8 on the SOT ST? In that case, I think it might only be a rehearsal and a mis-called take 7. It seems to be one take, "still rolling on take 8".

One small point: Chorus take 8 is a bit longer on SOT ST. There are a few more seconds right before the count in, and the bass notes (and maybe even the count in) before "yeah one more" may belong to the Chorus take 8.

Paul

EDIT: Just wanted to point out that there is a bit of the sessions for Prayer on Archaeology, shorter but better quality than Vigotone.

Nah, if you listen to the "verse takes 1-10" track on the SOT, Chuck clearly calls out before six takes, those being 1-6. The other two takes are on the SOT ST and I doubt the alleged seventh take is a rehearsal.

And yeah, I revised the Prayer track bit. I took a closer listen and compared the sources of the vocal session; Vigotone's is muddy throughout, Archaeology is clear but only half of the length. My copy is a mix of the two. For some reason I listed it there as unbooted but forgot about the Archaeology bit. It's since been corrected.

Thanks for your reply and corrections! I just wanted to ask, what does it mean when a track is 'unbooted'? For example: Cabin Essence - Chorus vocal overdub, from acetate (mono) (0:29). Does it mean that we know it exists, but that it isn't on any bootleg, or does it mean in circulates (on the internet) but that it hasn't been used for a bootleg cd?

Thanks,
Paul

The latter.

Thanks for your reply. Here are some more suggestions:

Do You Like Worms

There are longer sessions on the SOT Source Tape, longer than UM 17 (after take 23, before the count in of take 24). Take 14 of the Bicycle Rider/HAV theme is longer (it starts a bit earlier) than UM 17. Part 1 1st vocal overdub is also a little bit longer than on UM 17. Than there is the stereo mix on the SOT Source Tape - I think that might have been the source for the stereo UM 16 track. It is longer, and in a more unedited form, and all the vocals are the same. So every track on the SOT Source Tape is essential for the complete DYLW sessions.

The Old Master Painter

The list does not contain take 3 of part 1: it is available on the SOT Source Tape CD. Take 4 might be a little tiny bit longer on the SOT Source Tape, but it is almost nothing.
Further you mention a track assembly from the SOT Source Tape (mono). The track that I found on that cd is called 'Track', but is in mono and stereo and 2:24, while your list says it is 1:58. What exact track do you mean by 'Track assembly (mono) (1:58)'?

I hope this contributes to making this list even better and more complete than it was!

Your list will definitely be the perfect compliment to the new box that's coming shortly (I'm literally chomping at the bit for it, no pun intended!) I have been following your list, but I am having a little trouble with the following listing:

Part 2, two revised version mono mix attempts (mono) (3:40)
Version 4, part 2 takes 1-10 (mono/stereo) (6:07)

Version 4, part 2 vocal overdub (mono/stereo) (0:50)
Version 4, part 2 stereo mix (stereo) (0:42)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" (Part 2, second revised version mono mix attempt) Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (Part 2, first revised version mono mix attempt, version 4, part 2 takes 1-10, version 4, part 2 vocal overdub and stereo mix)

Some mono mix attempts. Version 4, part 2 is the slow "dit dit dit heroes and villains" refrain.

Try as I might, I cannot seem to locate anything on the Heroes and Villains Sessions, Part 2 disc that remotely resembles a 6:07 session for the slow "dit dit dit" refrain. I did locate the last 2 tracks listed (the vocal overdub and stereo mix) but cannot seem to find any type of session for that particular track on that particular disc. Could you please inform me as to where this could be found? Also, though I have located the two revised version mono mix attempts, they only time out to 3:25, not 3:40 as you stated. Any help you can give me would be great!

Again, thanks so much for taking the time and effort to help all of us along with attaining the ultimate SMiLE collection! I look forward to your reply! Take care!

As a relatively uninformed head on this, is this not on the H&V Part 1 bootleg? Away from my collection atm, but there's a lengthy section on that boot. I may well be mistaken.

Hey Hypehat!

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't started sorting the tracks yet tonight, but off memory there are sessions for takes 1-10 of Gee and takes 1-10 of the dum dum dum section.  At first I assumed the session listed was for the "dum dum dums" but later on in the list, it is listed separately. I believe those are the two lengthy sessions you are referring to. Take care!

I am getting confused between "Dum Dum Dum" & "Dit Dit Dit" - time to get some sleep  :lol

Did some double-checking, and have made appropriate adjustments in that session's notes in the Inventory thread.

Very soon I'll start with all the HAV recordings. I already split all the long tracks on HAV Sessions Parts 1 & 2. Once HAV is done, everything else is easy!

Once we finish the Smile stuff, how about we perform this same undertaking on EVERY Beach Boys album? This has been a LOT of fun. I think we should keep it up.

I've been taking a break from this project but a though occurred to me. Why not add "Surf's Up (Vocals Mix)" from Get The Boot? It will be on my set anyway.

Hi The Real Beach Boy, I'm not (yet) too much into the rest of the album's sessions (though I like the earlier and later years as well) but why not!

I just started on the HAV verse recordings.

Your list says this:

10-20-66

Part 1, rehearsals and takes 1 and 4, and unknown take (2 or 3?) (stereo) (11:30)
Part 1, track, mono mix (mono) (0:52)

Available on Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two (Part 1, rehearsals up to 1:49), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (Part 1, rehearsals from 1:49 to end, takes 1 and 4, mono mix), Heroes and Vibrations (Part 1, unknown take (2 or 3?)

Backing track session. This session will be revised a few times over and overdubbed with vocals.

I can't find all the recordings and tracks you mention. On HAVS2 (Heroes and Villains Sessions Vol 2) there is 8:45 of rehearsals and take 1 and 4. On HAVS1-2 there is 1:49 of 'oscillator query' and 0:32 of unique rehearsal which isn't present on the list (from 2:24 - 2:56). So that leaves about one minute for the unknown take (Heroes And Vibrations). It seems that that track is also represented on Archaeology. Heroes And Vibrations might sound better, but the Arch track starts a bit earlier and doesn’t fade out (while Heroes And Vibrations does). Further Arch. Is lossless, and HAV lossy. So Arch. may be a essential source for this track.

I don’t know which tack you mean with Part 1, track, mono mix (mono) (0:52). Could you please point out which track you mean? The only thing I could find was an acetate of the verse but that one includes vocals.

Thanks a lot,

Paul

Hi The Real Beach Boy, some new things I found.

10-20-66

Part 1, rehearsals (stereo) (7:36)
Part 1, takes 1, unknown (2 or 3?), 4 (stereo) (4:27)
Part 1, track, mono mix (mono) (0:52)

Available on Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two (Part 1, rehearsals 0:00-1:49, 3:23-3:56), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (Part 1, rehearsals from 1:49-3:23 and 3:56-7:36, takes 1 and 4), Archaeology (Part 1, unknown take (2 or 3?)), unbooted (Part 1, mono mix)

Backing track session. This session will be revised a few times over and overdubbed with vocals.

I think you can still mention Heroes And Vibrations as source, because it sounds better (to my ears). It is just not complete.

11-4-66

"Humble Harv demo" (mono) (5:48)

Available on Project Smile, edited version on Endless Harmony

Prject Smile has indeed the most complete vesion. But I think Archaeology might be a sound upgrade. It has more hiss, but a lot more frequenzy information as well I think. Endless Harmony still is the best source, but the shortest. (And there is a little bit of chatter after the piano demo on Heroes And Villains Sessions Vol. 2 - maybe nothing to do with the piano demo, but I thought i should mention it.)

12-13-66

"Sonny, Down Snuff" vocal session (mono) (10:26)

Available, in various permutations and quality, on Heroes and Vibrations, Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two, Archaeology, and Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2

Archaeology is a better source than Heroes And Vibrations for the stereo final take. There is some chatter on Arch. as well after Sunny down snuff tack 5 but I think that's actually preceding the chorus, which is the next track (it is in the same order as on HAVSP1&2, from which it is sourced I think).

There are some small snippets of the sessions on Arch, track 3 and 6, which are upgrades of HAVSP1&2. These are three small parts of the sessions on HAVSP1&2.

That adds up to about 10:30, and that's without the mono mix on HAVSVol.2. So maybe you could mention that track separately?

Thanks!

And some other things:

12-22-66

Verse vocals (Brian only), from acetate (mono) (0:52)
Part 2, revised version, takes 1-10 (mono/stereo) (4:17)
Part 2, "Swedish frog", unknown takes and mixes (stereo) (1:21)
Part 2, "Hold On", take 8, vocal take 14, vocal overdub (stereo) (1:34)

Available on Heroes and Vibrations (Part 2, revised version takes 1-10), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (everything else)

A plethora of vocal sessions. "Revised version" is "Gee". "Swedish frog" is the animal noises. "Hold On" is what's called out on the talkback - it's the fast "the heroes, the heroes, the heroes and villains" refrain.

First of all, maybe we should call Part 2, revised versiob just Gee, that may cause less confusion about all these part 2, version 4, revised vesion things.

I found that Heroes And Vibrations indeed has the longest version of the sessions, but not the best quality. Soundwise there are upgrades on ARch. (d1 t23-24). And lossless/lossy-wise on Heroes And Villains Part 1&2 (but that one sounds not so good).

The mix of Swedish Frog (includign the section preceding it) is in mono on Heroes And Villains Sessions Vol. 2 (it sounds like a mono mix). There is a stereo version on Archaeology, not including some vocal overdubs.

Hold On take 8 is found on HAVSV2. There is a mono mix as well on the cd. A stereo version can be found on Arch., track 26. (the stereo version is also on HAVSP1&2 with some more studio chatter)

12-27-66

Part 2, two revised version mono mix attempts (mono) (3:40)
Version 4, part 2 takes 1-10 (mono/stereo) (5:26)
Version 4, part 2 vocal overdub (mono/stereo) (0:41)
Version 4, part 2 stereo mix (stereo) (0:42)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" (Part 2, second revised version mono mix attempt), Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two (Part 2, first revised version mono mix attempt, version 4, part 2 takes 1-10, version 4, part 2 vocal overdub), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (Version 4, part 2 stereo mix)

Some mono mix attempts. Version 4, part 2 is the slow "dit dit dit heroes and villains" refrain.

I think the first mon mix attempt is in fact a stereo mix attempt, at the end of track 4 on HAVSP1&2. Part of that is also on Arch, in better sound quality (d1t28). The rest seems to be correct, except for the stereo mix on HAVSVol.2 being a mono mix.

Maybe it is a nice idea to compile a list with all the vintage, oringal mixes and edits Brian Wilson made during Smile?

Paul

When Paul's changes get added to the final list can we keep the track numbers of the sources? It makes it much easier to figure out exactly which track we're talking about as track names on boots aren't always that helpful.

(and don't get me started on HAVSP1&2 - the thought of searching for a 1:53 snippet hidden somewhere on one of the 6 10 minute tracks... why couldn't the bootlegger have spent just a few hours splitting up the tracks??!)

Actually it’s funny that you mention doing this with other albums… a few months back I ended up creating a playlist of (pretty much) every single circulating studio track (and a few live ones) in chronological order!

I’ve got a pretty big collection of boots, but I found that I hardly ever listened to most of them. There were too many duplicate tracks, random song selections, songs that appear again and again on different ones, so I decided to put them all into one playlist and remove any duplicates. And the most logical order seemed to be chronological.
I started with the ‘life’s a beach’ series – a fan made collection of pretty much everything currently circulating in chronological order, that currently goes up to 1965, and then carried on from there. I added every track from every CD I had and went through the year by year session & gig list on Andrew Doe’s (brilliant) site, matching up each track and tagging each one with an approximate recording date.

It’s great way of collecting together and listening to all of that stuff – having all the sunflower era stuff together is great, and hearing the 1977-78 sessions evolve, and listening to the 60s stuff in order with Brian’s producing skills getting better and better and better. And now if a new boot surfaces I can just takes the tracks I don’t already have, tag them with a date and off they automatically end up in the playlist.

I’m sure it’s not entirely accurate – I’m sure a lot of the dates are wrong, and some aren’t very precise (some tracks only have an approximate year), but it might be a good starting point. Of course the smile and good vibrations era is a big jumble of tracks – this thread should fix that though! I can send a copy of the tracklisting, with dates, to anyone who’s interested. It’s probably too big to paste in full as a post unfortunately.

Anyway, back on topic to the smile sessions….

From now on I will try to make clearer which track on which bootleg we're talking about.

From the list:

1-3-67

"Bag of Tricks" takes 1-2 (mono) (2:08)
"Do A Lot" insert (stereo) (0:50)
"All Day" takes 1-2, 14-17 (mono) (5:14)
"Tag To Part 1", 1st version, undubbed and two instrumental overdubs (mono) (2:18)
"Tag To Part 1", 2nd version (mono) (1:17)
"Soul Made Beautiful" unknown takes (mono) (7:24)
"Soul Made Beautiful" mono mix (mono) (0:16)
"Bridge To Indians" aka "pickup to 3rd verse" unknown takes (mono) (6:38)

Above selections are from a compilation reel made from work done that day and a few days before

Available on Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two ("Tag To Part 1", 2nd version, "Bridge To Indians" aka "pickup to 3rd verse" unknown takes), unbooted ("Soul Made Beautiful" unknown takes - available, edited, on Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (everything else)

"Do A Lot" is the refrain later used in Vega-Tables. "All Day" is the embryonic Dada. "Tag to Part 1" is a tack piano track. "Soul Made Beautiful" and "Bridge To Indians" are the first two sections of the alleged "Part 2" in the Heroes and Villains sections track on the Good Vibrations box set.

Bag Of Tricks is only available on HAVSessionsVol.2, track 24 and 25, but it os the same take I think and one in mono and one in stereo.

The Do A Lot piano version is available in best quality on Archaeology (d3t1), and in mono (HAVSessionsVol.2, track 19) with more chatter before the start of the recording. A stereo version on HAVSessionsPart1&2 (track 2, last section of the track) fades out just a little bit later. It seems like Arch. faded the track out a very little bit.

Of All Day, takes 1-2 and 13-17 are available, on HAVSessionsVol.2. Together they are 5:05 in length, from my bootleg, so it is a typo or do you have a slightly different source?

Tag to part 1, undubbed and two instrumental overdubs are available on HAVSessionsVol.2 (t20-22). Only one thing: the first track is in stereo.

"Tag To Part 1", 2nd version (mono) (1:17) is avalilable on Archaeology (d1t21) and on Heroes And Vibrations. I think Archaeology is the best source, but it has more hiss. Heroes And Vibrations sounds cleaner, but that may be due to noise reduction or so. (It has a lot less frequency  information than Arch, Arch is lossless, Heroes And Vibrations definately lossy.)

About 4:30 of the Soul Made Beautiful sessions are available on HAVParts1&2, track 9 (after a bit of Dum dum dum). I haven't located the complete sessions though. Can someone point me in the right direction?

The Bridge to Indians sessins are most complete on HAVSessionsPart1&2, track 3. Two parts of it are available in better quailty on Arch, track 20 (edit at 1:36 on Arch.) So both sources are essential.

Paul

Some mono mix attempts. Version 4, part 2 is the slow "dit dit dit heroes and villains" refrain.

Am I right in thinking that takes 1 - 10 as described above appear at the end of track 4 on HAVSP1&2, and are mainly 'dum dum dum' vocal sessions ?

Am I also righting that the stereo mix appears immediately afterwards, and that the vocal overdub is a whistle overdub at the start of track 9 on HAVSP1&2 (and also available on Arch d1t10)?

Am I also righting that the stereo mix appears immediately afterwards - No, I actually think that is the vocal mix. As i posetd earlier, I think there isn't a stereo mix at all, because the source for it in the list is HAVSVol.2 - but that is a mono mix.

Hope that helps!

Hi Paul, I've checked through HAVSP1&2 and it's the only part of it I can find too. I assumed that when The Real Beach Boy says they're available edited, he means that not all 7:24 minutes of it have been booted, and the 4:30 on this set are the most complete booted version. I could be wrong of course!

and that the vocal overdub is a whistle overdub at the start of track 9 on HAVSP1&2 (and also available on Arch d1t10)? - No, this is another section, also with dum's, but it's the section that goes right before the false barnyard fade in the Cantina HAV mix.

Hope that helps!

Great, thanks!

Adjustments made. Also some reformatting and reordering of tracks to make for an easier read. Spoken-word recordings have been moved to the top of the 2nd post of GV sessions due to the first post going over the 30K word limit.

I did the exact same thing. Have been for years. Still finding new bits and pieces and morsels. I think a comprehensive discography is sorely missing. Not just for sessions, but mixes in general.

For quite some time now, I've been wanting a "definitive" list of all the outtakes and various mixes, released and unreleased, of the 15 Big Ones to the Keepin' The Summer Alive period. This would also include the alternate mixes or takes released in error on first cd editions. I think I remember reading that a few "wrong versions" got released on the first cd release of 15 Big Ones and MIU.

Thanks The Real Beach Boy for updating the list! It's getting better and better. I continued with Bicycle Rider:

1-5-67

"Bicycle Rider", 1st vocal overdub (stereo) (0:35)
"Bicycle Rider", 2nd vocal overdub (stereo) (0:34)
"Bicycle Rider", 3rd vocal overdub (stereo) (0:38)
"Bicycle Rider", 4th vocal overdub (stereo) (0:35)
"Bicycle Rider", 1st mono mix from acetate (mono) (0:32)
"Bicycle Rider", 2nd mono mix from acetate (mono) (0:27)
"Bicycle Rider", stereo mix (0:36)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" ("Bicycle Rider", first three vocal overdubs),Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two ("Bicycle Rider", fourth vocal overdub), Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two (mono mix from acetate), An American Band ("Bicycle Rider", unknown stereo mix), Vigotone 2-CD "Smile" ("Bicycle Rider", alternate mono mix from acetate)

I think the 4th vocal overdub might be just an other stereo mix, I can't hear any new vocals. The same mix is available on Archaeology (d1t15) in much better quality than HAVSParts1&2 (track2, 0:56-1:31).

Quote
1-27-67

"Dumb whistle", rehearsals (mono) (5:53)
"Dumb whistle", whistle overdub (mono) (0:17)
1st mono mix attempt (mono) (1:57)
2nd mono mix attempt (mono) (1:19)
3rd mono mix attempt (mono) (1:23)
"In The Cantina" takes 4, 12-15 (mono) (3:47)
"In The Cantina" take 17, Mike's vocal overdub (mono) (0:40)
"In The Cantina" take 17, Brian's vocal overdub (stereo) (0:43)
"In The Cantina" take 17, mono mix (mono) (0:47)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" (mono mix attempts, "In The Cantina", Mike's vocal overdub), Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two ("Dumb whistle" rehearsals and whistle overdub, "In the Cantina" takes 12-15 - note, this is also available, edited but with better quality, on Archaeology), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (everything else)

I'm looking for the dumb whistle rehearsals on HAVSP1&2. I can only find about a minute of (vocal) rehearsals at the end of track 8, so I'm still missing about 5 minutes of it somewhere. The bit I've found contains the following dialogue:

Carl?: How much do you want of that Brian?
Dennis: Carol, I think [???] should go home. Ok baby?
Brian: I'm getting kinda pissed off 'cause you guys are f**king around

Is this it or is there more?

Hi, I can't find that session as well. The Real Beach Boy, could you point us in the right direction? (maybe you listed the 'dit dit dit, heroes and villains' sessions as the dumb whistle sessions, as they contain a huge amount of dum's as well)

Made some adjustments in the inventory thread. As far as I know, the "dumb whistle" vocal session is unbooted in a 6 minute version but booted in around a 2 minute version on H&VS1&2.

Long time lurker (I swear I used to be registered here before too) but I wanted to thank everyone who has been putting together this list. So, thank you.

I think I have all of the named discs (although my Project Smile seems to have gotten lost) but if anyone can Oh hey guys, I'm being cute and testing the moderators!oint Yes yes yes, I don't know how to follow the rules!e in the direction of the unbooted material I would be exceedingly grateful and do my best to return the favor.

I actually don't know where all the unbooted material is as well. The Real Beach Boy, can you post a list where all the unbooted material can be found?

Today I'll continue with checking all the HAV recordings.

This is just a thought, but perhaps you could post a message on the first page describing the difference between "unbooted" and "uncirculated"? Just to avoid confusion.  :)

From the list:

1-23-67

"My Children Were Raised", vocal session, unknown takes(mono) (3:03)
"My Children Were Raised", vocal overdub (stereo) (0:17)
"My Children Were Raised", master take (mono) (0:26)
"My Children Were Raised", mono mix (mono) (0:20)

Available on Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 "Smile Sessions" ("My Children Were Raised", mono mix), Heroes and Villains Sessions One and Two (vocal session), Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2 (vocal overdub and master take)

Two things: the sessions are available on Archaeology (d1 t7/8) edited, but in much better quality. The vocal overdub in stereo is not on Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 2, but HAVSessionsParts1&2. Again, edited and better quality on Arch, d1 end of track 8.
The mono master take (with all the vocal and instrumental overdubs) is on HAVSVol.2, in mono, 0:29, with more chatter than any other source I believe.

Going back to the verse sessions, there is the instrumental verse with the Smiley Smile instrumental overdubs in mono on the GV Boxset. Is that on your list yet?

EDIT: the complete sessions (and the stereo vocal overdub) are on Heroes And Vibrations as well. They are much clearer, but lossy sourced and I think quite heavily noise reduced. Maybe both discs, (HAVSP1&2 and Heroes And Vibrations) should be given as a source for the complete sessions. In any case, Archaeology still has the best quality, but is not complete.

Made necessary changes.

I have the instrumental verse with the Smiley overdubs on 2/12/67 although I think the February date is inaccurate. However, if you listen to the vocal overdubs on the SOT, the fifth vocal overdub has the organ but the first four do not. Hence my confusion. Hopefully someone has a better idea.

Some H&V vocals questions (sorry if some of these are very obvious - I'm just a bit confuzzled)

1) The vocals found on the H&V found on an acetate under 12-22-66: The initial vocal sessions that produced these vocals are not available correct?  What we have in terms of lead vocals from the multi-tracks are actually from the re-record on 2-12-67?

2) On one of the mixdown attempts there is a lead vocal for the verse shared by Brian and Mike.  This only exists currently from this mixdown correct?

3) The session that produced the verse "At three score & five..." has never surfaced correct?  That verse only survives on the various mixdown attempts and of course on the "Cantina Mix"?

Yes on all counts, however I believe the 2-12-67 session might be wrong; waiting on the box set and any other documentation to be 100% sure.

Reformatted the list to be in order by date rather than by song.

If it's listed with a track time, then it's probably fair to say that its circulating to a greater or lesser extent. I'd also imagine that it's circulating fairly freely otherwise there's not much point to listing it.

Hey guys!

I've spent the past few days getting my collection in order for "the big day". As I've said before, it's great to finally have a list to go by. In order to keep the list as comprehensive as possible, I just wanted to throw in a few suggestions about "Good Vibrations." While the list does a great job categorizing the sessions themselves, I think there are a few bits and pieces that are missing: the 1983 Rarities LP mix (which is available in much better quality on the GV 40th Anniversary disc) and another mix of lead and backing vocal overdubs, timing 3:51, which can be found on Vigotone SMiLE, disc 2, track 1 as part of the 7:42 mix of that track. I am also wondering if there aren't any bits and pieces on the "A Pocket Symphony" cd that we may have missed as well. I will try to compare and contrast tomorrow to see if I can find anything, but if anyone else has any info, feel free to jump in and tell us what you know! Take care everyone! Speak soon!

Kev
