51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: *Merged* Brian Wilson current album thread on: November 10, 2014, 08:53:50 AM
I suspect the live concert performance will be live but that the Soundstage broadcast will be more along the lines of some of the "live" promo recordings (NPR, the official live product) that used some autotuned post production work as well as incorporating some of the actual material that was recorded for No Pier Pressure.  They wouldn't have a concert that people paid money to see - ONLY mime to prerecorded tracks methinks.  Anyone got tickets or planning on going to give us the full details?

If you listen to some "live" recordings of Do It Again and the song That's Why God Made The Radio from the C50 Tour some elements of the Walmart C50 rerecorded version of Do It Again and the album version of That's Why God Made The Radio were used (or blended back) in the presentation of Joe Thomas' live recordings.  Curious to see how this plays out.

In other news, I am very happy to hear the Bob Clearmountain is mixing the studio album, but being in charge of the mix does not mean that the album won't be a festival of the over use of autotune (ala That's Why God Made The Radio or the Live C50 recordings) as the autotune is often applied far before the final mixing.  Sadly, that means Bob Clearmountain may not have the (or much) opportunity to make the autotuning more tasteful or reduce it, but rather just be able to control how it is mixed.  I hope people aren't getting their hopes up that Brian's vocals will be radically different to how they were presented on the TWGMTR.  I suspect they will sound quite similar to the last BB album (which I loved btw, but would really have prefered a more organic sounding presentation of the vocals like was used in Al's Postcard From California album).  I enjoyed Brian's contribution to the Peter Hollens track but there is no denying that Robo-Brian is in full effect if that may be any indicator.
52  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wrecking Crew Movie update on: November 09, 2014, 08:19:45 AM
I saw the movie twice, both with Mr. Tedesco in attendance (doing a Q and A after one of the screenings) a few years ago and also had a chance to speak with him after the Q and A.  It is such a wonderful film and he has worked so hard and for so long to put it together.  Perfect example of a labour of love, as well as a treat for any music fan.  I'd pay to see it in the theatre again if I had the opportunity.  He said the intention has always been to have a ton of bonus footage to add as special features section for the dvd release so I'll be buying the dvd upon release too.  Minor gripe being that it could be more accurate regarding The Beach Boys' instrumental contributions to their own recordings.  It implies that the wrecking crew contributed more than they actually did.  But we have scholars like Stebbins, C-Man, AGD, to help us get the most accurate picture of how individual tracks shaped up and who did what specifically.  No question Brian's access to these fine musicians helped projects like Pet Sounds and Smile (and so many others brilliant tracks) come to life.  Can't wait to see it again.  I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already.

Yup, even thought it was recorded several years ago, this song is a heartbreaker and tear-jerker.  Sad.  Anyone seen the movie yet?
54  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Frankie Valli tour on: October 18, 2014, 06:03:21 PM
Hey Donald!

Love Frankie Valli and have seen him live twice.  Once in the 1980's and once a couple of years ago.  Met Frankie and got to shake his hand, got the setlist and was in the front row.  Pretty cool.  Don't want to spoil anyone's good time but industry insiders (whose name you would recognize) have suggested that some of the vocals are canned.  It bummed me out.  I heard this before I saw my last Frankie show.  Watched carefully from my front row seat.  If Frankie was lip synching he was doing a good job!
55  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Glen Campbell's final song released today on: October 04, 2014, 10:07:03 AM
Glen's last two full length cds were very solid and this last tune is another gem.  Can't wait to see the doc.
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Journals Vol 1 & 2 on: September 28, 2014, 07:29:17 AM
Bump!

What do you suppose these 3 gold tins (BB Journals 1 and 2 and the BW sessions) are worth today?  Much of the material has seen legit release or release on other boots (some in improved sound quality).  Anyone who purchased these at the time mind saying how much they sold for?  I have an opportunity to obtain all three through purchase or a trade (I'm trying to swing a trade).  But I am trying to decide the worth of it.  I am a big collector and it is a pretty impressive looking beast of a collection with over 20 discs and impressive packaging but I have so much of the material elsewhere.  I don't believe this question is in conflict with board rules.  If it is please feel free to delete it, mods.  To all the bootleg police out there, I am a guy who has purchased every legit BB / BW release faithfully and am a good customer and a buyer (not a seller).  :-)  Big thanks in advance for any helpful info!  I need a BB / BW fix before No Pier Pressure is released (already preordered the deluxe and vinyl).
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Jeff Foskett speaks about leaving Brian's band and joining Mike's band on: September 22, 2014, 08:30:40 PM
http://www.desertsun.com/story/life/entertainment/music/2014/09/22/beach-boys-brian-wilson-jeffrey-foskett/16070181/

Great article here addressing some questions many had regarding Jeff's departure.  I very much enjoyed the read!  I hope all participants are feeling good about moving forward.  I am excited to see both acts again soon!  I do hope Matt Jardine gets another shot with Brian's band.  No offence intended to the fella from the Fendertones but I'd prefer Matt in the vocal blend of Brian's band.  Jeff Foskett seems to be fitting in just dandy with Mike's unit.
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do the other BB members feel that Mike has been unfairly vilified? on: August 26, 2014, 10:13:33 AM
For what it is worth, when Brian first started touring there would be a film that was played before Brian started the show.  Mike was featured briefly in said film and was routinely booed.   Brian did not like that and told his audience as much on more than one occasion.
59  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What song do you consider to be sonically perfect? on: August 25, 2014, 07:07:55 PM
I envy you, Amanda!  Such a great record and it just gets better with age.  You will love it!
60  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What song do you consider to be sonically perfect? on: August 24, 2014, 07:19:01 PM
Great thread!

Not a song but all of Big Star's first Album #1 Record is sonic bliss.  So well recorded, mixed and mastered.  Clear as a "bell".  Most kudos for this belong to Chris Bell and John Fry.  The songs are great but the production just elevates the material for me.  I love Radio City and Third but #1 Record IS sonic perfection.
61  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike posts about Robin Williams on facebook on: August 12, 2014, 08:17:00 AM
No flaming here (Stephen Newcombe), I agree with you re:selfishness and cowardice.  The hurt is far greater for those who are left behind.  But I think it is important to understand that those in the grips of addiction, depression and various other mental illnesses often turn to suicide out of frustration after trying to cope and not having success.  Getting rid of the stigma of mental illness is the first step and is key for many people to realize that they are not alone and that there are many different avenues to explore to manage and or recover.

There are no winners in this scenario.  Suicide isn't right, but it isn't fair to blame Robin.  Who knows what he was going through.  So sad.

For me, this just one of the many inspirational aspects of Brian Wilson's story.  He overcame so much.  Abusive father, extreme drug abuse, demented abuse from an svengali  who was supposed to help him, etc.  And look at what he has accomplished and what he has given us in the last 25 years.  It can bring me to tears and often does.  While some like to mourn what was lost (changed voice, stoic face, lack of showmanship, fluctuating weight) Brian's renaissance and legacy is that of a survivor.  Reminds me of the cheesy but wonderful scene from Rocky Balboa.  "It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward.  That's how winning is done"  Brian Wilson may have been broken a few times and he may now be a different guy, but he is winning and that is what makes his career full of comebacks a joy to behold.  I am very happy that Brian found a way to not give into the darkness.  Sorry for the festival of "heart on the sleeve" blubbery, but I am heading to San Fran tomorrow to see Paul McCartney for the first time and after seeing 41 BW/BB shows I am wondering why I waited so long to see Paul and feeling pretty full of  many emotions.

Really like the last song one too!
63  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Paul McCartney hospitalized on: August 07, 2014, 09:30:16 AM
Bought plane tix to San Francisco and hoping to go to Sir Paul.  Haven't got tickets yet but I'll figure something out.  Anyone seen him live since his illness?  Also any suggestions of cheap places to stay and great used cd / record stores in the area (I love Amoeba in the Haight but I need more suggestions).  Any help most welcome!
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pacific Ocean Blue - Original vs Reissue on: July 30, 2014, 07:49:52 PM
Love this geeky collector part of this thread!  Mikie, your list is making me drool.  I enjoyed seeing some of your rare stuff after the Berkeley reunion show but apparently you were hiding a bunch of your primo rarities!

I am kicking myself for not picking up the 3 lp POB.  But I do have two copies of the original on vinyl.

I have a bunch of extra copies of dennis stuff besides the original POB on vinyl if anyone ever wants to strike up a trade or some such.

List of Dennis EXTRAS on cd:
Original 1991 POB on cd
4 copies of the Legacy Premier Edition with deluxe fold out digipak and extra liners (my favorite version) 2 are still sealed
3 copies of the 2 cd POB w/Bambu
2 copies of the POB & Bambu Radio Sampler cd featuring exclusive radio edit of the Taylor Hawkins version of Holy Man plus 4 other songs

I also have a few (not extra copies though) of the POB one hour radio special promo cds.  Quite weird that one is a 54 minute version and the other is a 59 minute version.  Why have two different promos with the same front cover and slightly different contents.  Weird.  Then I have another radio promo (54:30 running time) issued by Sony BMG but it is different promo with no front or back liner like the previous two I listed.  Why 3 different radio promos for the 2008 release?  Nice to have though.  I also have the radio promo plastic sleeve Holy Man cd with 2 unique edits that are different from the album verson.
65  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / New Frankie Valli and Four Seasons box sets on: July 29, 2014, 09:40:14 PM
Anyone plunked down their hard earned cash for either of the new Valli box sets?  There is an 18 cd Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons box as well as an 8 cd solo box set.  I have all of the material already on the old curb cds as well as the old Rhino Box set and the newer Jersey Beat box set so there is now new material here.  I love Valli and am pretty much a completist so I will probably go ahead with this at some point (they are both pretty cheap too) but just wondering if anyone has compared and can let me know if the sound quality and mastering are an upgrade or not.  I checked with the usually knowledgable nerds or at the Hoffman forum but have received no reply.  Thought I'd see if anyone here had the scoop...Thanks in advance
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson @ Cork, 4 July on: July 07, 2014, 07:16:49 PM
I like Jeff Foskett's singing.  His solo albums are wonderful.  Especially Thru My Window.  That album is chock full of excellent tunes with great vocal performances.  But Matt Jardine's falsetto just feels like it belongs better in a Beach Boys stack.  It has the yearning quality of early Brian.  A bit more of the whine that carries much of the emotion for me.  I have heard Foskett, Kirsch, Baker and Matt Jardine live in person (where it counts) many many times over.  All very talented folks.  Matt would be my first choice if I could choose a dude for the high vocals in a fantasy Beach Boys line-up.  KittyKat's comments seem a bit odd not to realize what an important role Matt is stepping into (quite beautifully I might add).  To call his vocals "adequate" is nonsense.
67  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the "What are you listening to now?" thread on: June 14, 2014, 11:27:46 AM
I'm listening to Paul Heaton and Jaqui Abbott's 2014 new cd called - What Have We Become.  Excellent.  Best release of 2014 as far as I am concerned.  Paul Heaton was the leader of The Beautiful South and The Housemartins for those that recall him.  This is his 4 or 5th solo cd but his solo career thus far has been quite patchy.  This is a killer return to form.  Check out the songs D.I.Y., Moulding of a Fool, What Have We Become to get a sample of the goodness within.
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone - Beach Boys Play Tour - Jeff replaces Christian Love on: May 25, 2014, 01:36:30 PM
Jeff played with them last night.  Not sure f it was his first show with them though and I wasn't there but I received some pics from the show and a positive report from another fan.

Damn Great!

I hope you feel very proud of your work here.  You should.  Brilliant.  Just so it doesn't appear that I am kissing butt too much, the horns are too loud in the mix!  ;-)
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers on: April 12, 2014, 03:39:45 PM
OK, so it is not a Beach Boys song and I wouldn't call it rock TRACK, but does Brian Wilson ever deliver a heavier rock VOCAL than on Someone To Love?  Specifically the "I'll make all my money to spend on you honey, Yeah- Please Give me a clue..."?  I don't think so.  Not my fave era of Brian vocals, but he just goes for it there doesn't he?  I like the commitment there.  Can anyone mention a harder rocking Brian vocal?

71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VDP: \ on: April 02, 2014, 07:00:13 AM
Just some speculation on my part, but I believe Van Dyke had to go to bat in a very aggressive way to help his friend Frank Holmes get his due with respect to the using and the remuneration of the Smile artwork.  Perhaps in the process his working relationship with Brian and co took a hit and he walked of his own volition.  Agd, care to tell me if I am getting warmer or colder?  :-)
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are there people here who still believe the David Leaf version of the story? on: March 27, 2014, 12:19:09 PM
I think it is a matter of the pendulum just swinging too far one way.  And then an inevitable backlash occurs and the pendulum swings in the other direction.  David's book was (and is) great, as it illuminated Brian's contributions as the genius and architect behind the boys (a view which we all take for granted now) but it (like Derek Taylor's views before it) did further the Brian and a bunch of assholes view that seemed to catch fire.  This line of thinking, while providing insight to the unique gifts that Brian possessed, unfortunately did more to minimize the important contributions of the other boys.

For me it is all about having an balanced assessment of what everyone brought to the table.

At any rate,  I loved David's book (I have both editions) as well as his Smile doc.  While both have a few weak points and flaws - the world of The Beach Boys is a better place because of David's contributions.  Besides his book, liner notes and Smile doc, his PERSONAL support and help with Brian's career has helped us all enjoy a renaissance in Brian's and The Beach Boys' later chapter and for that I am grateful.

Thanks for the tips everyone!  I thought about it too long and now the price went up $50 back to $150.  Good thing you got in while you did Mikie!  Let me know how you like it (if you open it up, that it).
74  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Should I buy the Beatles US Box set? on: March 12, 2014, 07:46:14 AM
I have found it on sale new for $105.  I love the beatles but have all of the old cds the new remastered cds in both stereo and mono.  Do those who have it feel like it was a worthwhile purchase?  Thanks in advance.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike receives Ella Award 2014 on: February 26, 2014, 07:04:18 AM
Really enjoyed seeing "Loving Feelin"!  I bet it was quite a thrill for Foskett, he is just beaming here.  Cowsill is a star here too. Mr. Manning, I agree with you on "Loving Feelin" but I enjoyed Wild Honey as well.
Totten (and company) should be commended for his (their) work on putting this evening together.  Events like this are very tough to assemble with very little rehearsal time and a wide array of guests who are all working a bit outside their usual comfort zone.  I would have loved to have seen this event live.  Looked like a crazy collection of performers AND Mike, Bruce, Al and David.  I am jealous of those who took in the experience live...
