I understand that Brian's original mix is not markedly different from that of Al Schmitt. Has anyone heard the original mix and if so are there any significant differences? As I think that this album is one of Brians crowning achievements I would love to get my ears round his mix.

i think i've read someone here say Schmitt didn't do much, but did some good work on Brian's voice.

Never heard the voice bit. Al did want natural, not digital, reverb on the tracks, so he added that.

But yeah, otherwise he was mainly hired because Disney thought it would gain Grammy attention. It didn't.

It should have though.  In my opinion at least.  Great album.

I think the Grammy people start by seeing whether Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt, and a few others made an album that year. If so, automatic nomination. Then there are a few slots reserved for newcomers. Certain people get completely ignored for excellent work and it's as if they don't exist.
