I wonder if only the St. Augustine show is to be included here; it was not one of the best and would have to be tricked up like the Front Row Center versions we saw.  I am confused; is this merely the longer version of that program or a brand new venture? will there still be more DVD releases to fulfill our need to see so many varied performances?

Here's the gist, from one of the mailing lists I'm on:

Label: SMC Recordings
Genre: Pop

Sel #BEM10001 | BEM10002

DOIN' IT AGAIN [DVD]
DOIN' IT AGAIN [BLU-RAY]

The Beach Boys are America's most successful band. With 56 U.S. Top 100 hits, 36 Top Ten Hits and 4 Number One singles, their impression on American pop culture is rivaled only by the band that considered them to be their sole competition, The Beatles.

To mark the group's 50th anniversary, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks gathered in 2012 for an emotional reunion to record their first album of new material in 20 years, to kick off a worldwide tour and to reflect on their remarkable history.

FEATURING:
* Exclusive 2012 interviews with The Beach Boys
* Live performances from the band?s 2012 world tour
* Never-before-seen footage from the 1966 "Good Vibrations" recording sessions
* Behind-the-scenes footage from the 2012 recording sessions for the new Beach Boys release "That's Why God Made The Radio"
* The group's moving tributes to founding members Carl and Dennis Wilson

The Beach Boys: Doin' It Again is what fans thought they'd never see: The Beach Boys, with warmth, perspective and humor, describe their past, their present and their future.

WHY BUY? HERE'S WHY!!

* Containing vintage studio footage (some never released before), performance footage shot on May 2, 2012 in St. Augustine, FL, historic interview footage and more, this is the perfect video for Beach Boys fans and music fans of all ages.
* With 56 U.S. Top 100 hits, 36 Top Ten Hits and 4 Number One singles, The Beach Boys left an impression on 1960s American pop culture rivaled only by the band that considered them to be their only competition, The Beatles.
* Video celebrates the band's 50th anniversary -- Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston -- gathered in 2012 for an emotional reunion in Los Angeles to record their first album of new material in 20 years, to reflect on their remarkable history, and to kick off a worldwide tour.
* Never-before-seen footage from the 1966 "Good Vibrations" recording sessions.
* PBS Special will debut July 14th with numerous showings throughout summer.
* New album "That's Why God Made the Radio" is highest charting release for the Beach Boys since 1965, placing them second all-time with longest span of top 10 albums at 49 years passing The Beatles by two years

How nice!

...but man, they just had to mention The Beatles again. Twice. I'm waiting for the day when the boys are praised only on their own merits. Someone is getting lazy, though: they didn't mention what is Sir Paul's favorite song.

This release is most welcome by me since I thoroughly enjoyed the special.  Very well put together.   But for this to be the ONLY release from the whole tour...well I wouldn't like that too much.   :police:

Although, it does make you wonder:  if the other concerts that were filmed (like Red Rock) for a possible DVD release will be used as part of a more elaborate documentary/tour-diary (as a few posters have suggested) why release this PBS special if they're both basically the same format i.e. documentar mixed with live song excerpts?  You'd think that any other DVD release would be a complete show concert DVD rather than just an "expanded" version of this "Doin In Again" program?

This.

I still have to believe that we will get a faux full concert (with clips from multiple shows, including overseas) if they continue to film concerts but already have this one "in the can" and ready for release in a little over a month.

So this is a documentary style concert. It sounds great!

But please, please Capital Records, put out the entire concert on DVD and CD.  :'( I don't care which venue or if it's from various shows. I don't care about post production. Just give us the entire show...PLEASE :bow

The Amazon listing has it at 90 minutes, so it would appear to be an expanded version of the special as it aired in its 55 minute, PBS state. Though, the other ad description doesn't explicitly say anything to that effect or mention any bonus footage -- other than what we already saw in the PBS version. I would *guess* more concert footage and the missing years filled in a little? Let's hope there's more info to come.

There has been no official word or confirmation of a full live show DVD (this isn't one) or CD.

Doesn't mean it won't happen, but there have been far too many people around here taking other folks' idle speculation as gospel truth.

Very peculiar release. Especially with the promise of a new and expanded special on the horizon.

But this is the expanded special, right? The Blu-ray contains over 30 minutes of additional footage not included in the PBS showing...hopefully including a little more "in the studio" footage during the making of TWGMTR.

I hope they do something better with the GV studio footage where we'd be able to see a more raw, unedited version. As it stands now, everything going back to the CBS morning show to YouTube Smile webisodes to Charlie Rose to the PBS special is presented scattershot, where the edits jump from Columbia to Western, and there is footage on one "special" that doesn't appear on another...all that kind of stuff. The footage is fascinating on its own, for lesser fans do the cuts and edits to the audio track, for the die-hard obsessives a bonus DVD track is in order.

Please, make it all available!

It wasn't very inspired to begin with.. At least the Brother Records indian is there. Could have been far worse (remember, it's the Beach Boys).

Right, I didn't mean to suggest that the DVD would exclude the additional footage; I was using the term "Blu-ray" to refer to the physical product that reportedly contains more footage than the televised version.

Yeah, I actually don't mind the 50th artwork they've used in the program, posters, etc. It's a bit sort of one-note; it's literally a square logo plastered on everything including coffee mugs. But as someone else pointed out, the art could have been way worse; generic  shots of cars and surfboards and stock photos of women in bikinis from 1987.

The only thing I think that is really kind of awkard is the title. "Doin' It Again" just sounds weird and awkward. Even just "Front Row Center" or something would have been better. Did they really have to give this thing a title that sounds like a porn title?

I certainly hope the BD/DVD has something new that didn't air on PBS. It wasn't a bad doc, but it was trying to do way too much in a very short time. They tried to do a very truncated band history/biography, debut live tour footage, and discuss the new album all in 55 minutes, and there's no way that could ever work.

Awile back, Mike mentioned a live CD/DVD comming out in the fall, I hope this isn't what he meant.

Well, I won't miss that on the shelves of HMV! I heard, maybe on Facebook but probably here, that they are using the Red Rocks concert for the Live DVD. In fact, The Moody Blues one filmed there is very good, especialy the shots of the crowd and the surroundings

Yep, it seemed to have a title change. I'm not sure what a good title would be, but something else had to have been possible other than "Doin' It Again." Do we really need more BB product titled with a dropped G? Goin' On, Keepin' the Summer Alive, Good Timin',  :lol . Yes, I know, "Doing It Again" actually sounds even more awkard somewhow. I dunno, something like "The Beach Boys - Front Row Center - 50th Anniversary Celebration."

Don't get me wrong, the title isn't a big deal to me. The lack of any extra footage or bonus material is really disappointing. I'll get the Blu-ray, if nothing else to clear the HD version off of my DVR and get a version without a local PBS station "bug" in the corner.

55min and looks like the PBS version. The concert 'tinkering' alone turns me off. Unlikely I'll bother. Sorry. :'(

I got it. No insert. Just the case and DVD. On the plus side, the case is clear, so you can see the reverse of the cover art, which is the nice old shot of Brian and the boys round the piano.

No special features. No chapter menu. Just a "play" button and "audio." Feature is the 55 minute-or-so version that was broadcast.

That's too bad they couldn't add some special features or more concert clips or something.

Lucky for everybody who was able to record this on their DVR.....

Seriously, they should have just saved this as an "extra" with the live concert DVD.  Why put this out as a bare-boned separate release?

I'm (optimistically) expecting the next documentary/concert DVD to be significantly different than "Doin' It Again." Having just rewatched it again since it first aired, I find that the program works pretty well on its own.  It acts as a great mini-history lesson for the band (even though it's missing some major areas of the story).  The concert footage is a bonus and takes a backseat to the story.  I see now that it made sense for them to separate this release from any other upcoming projects.  But with absolutely no bonus features of any kind...it's almost embarassing to have it on a DVD clocking in only at a measly 58 minutes.  The concert clips were alright but man were they bland.  Sterile and uninspired camerawork from shot to shot.  The live mix...blahhh...

With the retelling of the band's history now out of the way on this new DVD, I'm hoping the supposed concert DVD we're expecting will focus just on the current tour both in behind the scenes/interviews and obviously significant concert footage.  We'll see....

What a missed opportunity.  When I first watched this I thought they finally got it right, doing it Beatles Anthology style with no narration and the band doing all the talking.  But to keep a 50 year career down to less than an hour is a CRIME.  The Beatles had 10 hours plus bonus material for their 1956-1970 career and it was great (even better if you see the pre-Yoko veto version).  I'm probably going to skip this one until I have plenty of disposable income again!

There are at least three new videos on the band in production including a tour DVD, the film crew did a sit down with Brian yesterday and that is the photo on Brian's facebook page with the Sydney Opera House in the background.

And The Beach Boys have at least three times as many albums as The Beatles had, albums which are much more, shall we say, "variant" in quality. The catalogs don't compare in any real way.

Well actually, The Beatles re-released, what, all 12 of their official albums plus the American version of Magical Mystery Tour and the Past Masters collection rounding up the stray tracks.

And now we have The Beach Boys getting 12 of their official albums plus Fifty Big Ones, the Greatest Hits album, and Made In California. And that thing called The SMiLE Sessions. And then there's That's Why God Made The Radio, along with the zinepak, the QVC bonus CD, and the Reader's Digest "chronicle" edition or whatever of the new album too. So I'd actually The Beach Boys did it better than The Beatles. And honestly, it's kinda ridiculous to re-release 30 or so albums at once. I don't mind that they are splitting it up a bit. I only have so much money!

How is that better?  That's like a completist's nightmare.  What the Beatles did was take all their core studio material and put it in a reasonably priced box set.  The Beach Boys have never done anything like that and I think it's about time they did.

The Beatles' stereo box retails for around $180. Considering that The Beach Boys have at least three times the amount of masters that The Beatles recorded, that is either a very lowball estimate from someone who doesn't wish to pay more than that for a lot of music, or it severely underestimates the band's musical-monetary value in comparison to the Fabs.

So if you count the Capitol cash-ins (the zinepak, the Reader's Digest thing, the QVC disc) plus the two official greatest hits albums, the Beach Boys will have released five different hits compilations.  Doesn't anybody else find that absolutely ridiculous?

Sorry if this is mean, but ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!?! If you include the core live albums (Concert, Live In London, and In Concert) and also include Stack o' Tracks and The SMiLE Sessions (as they're considered official studio releases by them I guess), you end up with what? Without looking closely, that's probably about 35 discs! The Beatles set costs around $180 on Amazon. And that, including the DVD I think is what, 16 discs or so? So double that, and you have a $350 to $400 Beach Boys set. How many of those you think they'd sell? I don't know if I could rationalize that purchase to my girlfriend, and she understands my Beach Boys fandom. We have to be realistic here.

It could be done for under $300 if they went the by-album-with-bonus-tracks route, ala the Johnny Cash Columbia albums box. But certainly no less than that. Strangely, I would think twice about purchasing a box containing Still Cruisin', Summer In Paradise and Stars And Stripes.

If you put two albums on one disc (and I'm just talking about the core studio albums from Brother and Capitol which means no live albums, no Stack-o-Tracks, no Smile Sessions, no Summer in Paradise or Stars and Stripes), that's about 16 discs and that's perfectly reasonable.

Exactly. And I'm also of the opinion that making them two-fers kinda sells the group a bit short. Every album should be its own thing. And especially if they were gonna do a box, you'd probably want the artwork and everything to be close to the original releases. And if you do two-fers then, you really can't get that.

Utterly and completely so. On at least two occasions in the past we've had GH sets which would and could (and perhaps should) have stayed in catalogue for a decade or more and seen off any idea of another GH project: the three GH discs which included a Brother Years Vol, and the Sounds of Summer-cum-Platinum Collection.

A few folk here are speculating that the hits will also be on the Made in California box but I hope to God that, if they are, the opportunityY is taken to feature them in versions/formats with which we're unfamiliar.

If the 50 Big Ones/GHs discs do well though, chances are the Capitol execs will take serious note, re-evaluate their opinion of the Beach Boys... And release a similar GHs set next year, with the track list re- arranged!

My comment that somehow got turned into the Beatles CDs vs The Beach Boys CDs was about the documentaries (Do It Again and Anthology).  The box set/reissue thread is elsewhere.  As far as the CD reissues - there is no comparison.  BB are like an idie group by comparison in the minds of the masses.  They want BB Greatest Hits and that's it.  I'm not ever going to be able to go to Target or Costco and be able to buy Friends or Surf's Up but With The Beatles or Beatles For Sale will be there.

Again, I think the BB blew it by limiting a 50 year career to a less than one hour documentary.  They should not only have done a 3-4 hour or longer documentary, it could have included videos and performances gallore (not the 2012 tour stuff).  What's more annoying is that I LOVE how they did this one like the Anthology, with no pre-rehearsed dialog or phony narration.  They could have included plenty of Carl and Dennis interview commentary too (ala Lennon's).

Well they did attempt an Anthology-like documentary.  That's what Endless Harmony was.  A little bit more comprehensive but still lacking in my opinion.  I think if somebody did a fan-edit of Endless Harmony, American Band, Doin' It Again, and the Brian Wilson A&E biography; that would be the ultimate Beach Boys movie.

Can't agree that EH and Anthology are similar. Anthology = 8 part documentary series spanning 10+ hours and 3 double CDs. Endless Harmony = 1 2.5 hour documentary and 1 CD.

And....let's get real here, as much as we love, adore, and worship The Beach Boys, they don't warrant a 10 hour documentary.

The EH doc wasn't even 2.5 hours long. The extended DVD edit was only about 1 hour and 45 minutes. That doc was about as good as an "authorized" documentary made in 1998 and made to be only one feature length could possibly be.

Perhaps the comparable period of 1961/62-ish to 1969 doesn't warrant 10 hours for the BB's, if for no other reason that less extant footage of them seems to exist as compared to the Beatles (although that may not even be true; I don't know what's out there).

But considering the BB's continued in various forms through, well, the present, I think now that they have clocked 50 years, they warrant more than 90 mins or two hours for a documentary. Yes, there are vast periods where little needs to be covered. We don't need an hour covering the harrowing tour years of 1993 to 1997.

But I hope they do something more along the lines of the Beatles Anthology, some sort of multi-hour documentary, and get the surviving guys to sit down for thorough interviews while they're still around.

One thing I've always loved about the EH doc is the fact that it gave a few seconds to the "Love You" album.  I absolutely LOVE Brian's description of the album: "It just hit the spot, y'know?"  Using "The Night Was So Young" was inspired, as that small snippet of the chorus enchanted me until I finally found a used copy of the album (this was before the 2000 reissues of course).  For some reason, it's always the album I put on after coming home from the bar.  I still like using the expression "hits the spot" when it comes to albums.

I picked up a copy of "Doin' It Again" the other day, because this 'made for PBS' show did not air on my local PBS station.  I wasn't expecting anything more or less than the 50+ minute program, as shown on TV (but not in my market  >:().  I got exactly what I expected, and it looks nice on my HDTV, and it sounds nice through my stereo and big old speakers.  It is a nice little video documentary to have, with the Good Vibrations footage, some concert clips, etc., and for $10.00, it's a bargain (hell, I paid more than that for that stupid WalMart 'zine pack).

Someone mentioned (perhaps in another thread) that there are 3 DVD projects in the works.  Do we know if that means 3 *IN ADDITION TO* this release (which I will be getting from Amazon today) or if this is included in that tally?  Either way, we're looking at another 2 DVD projects.  I just hope to God that one of them will represent a complete concert (drawn from multiple sources if necessary) with all the songs they've performed this tour.

I believe the poster mentioned three DVD/BR productions that are in the works.  I can't imagine what would be on the three separate productions, but as long as one of them is an entire concert's worth of the music, I'm a happy camper.  Heck, I'm happy with what we've gotten already.  Everything else is gravy, man, and I loves me some gravy.  Please, sir, I want some more.

Maybe a video companion to 50 Big Ones with music videos, promotional films, and concert clips?  How cool would that be?

Thanks. So the song performed is not the one we hear?  You are so astute to point that out, FOTM, as you must know the parts performed and the visual cues (I think I have heard that before).  I now recall that Waves of Love is the one Brian could not get excited for, which is Carl's vocal on Al's Postcard bonus release. But "I'd go anywhere" sounds great.

I think I up up to speed now. Thank you FOTM.

I just have to put my coconut earphones on and get back to the album.

Can someone who's bought the Doin' it Again set - either Blu-Ray or DVD - confirm the region coding please? Amazon UK states it's Region 1 only but Amazon UK is notoriously crap at getting such details correct. If it's region-free I might spend the kids' pocket money £s on a copy in future.

How is that better?  That's like a completist's nightmare.  What the Beatles did was take all their core studio material and put it in a reasonably priced box set.  The Beach Boys have never done anything like that and I think it's about time they did.

What do you think would be a reasonable price for a box set containing every Beach Boys master?

Somewhere around $100 to $150 I suppose?

The Beatles' stereo box retails for around $180. Considering that The Beach Boys have at least three times the amount of masters that The Beatles recorded, that is either a very lowball estimate from someone who doesn't wish to pay more than that for a lot of music, or it severely underestimates the band's musical-monetary value in comparison to the Fabs.

Rush recently released remastered versions of their entire catalog...but broke it up into three boxed sets.  I'm not entirely sure how many are in each set...I think it was something like 6 or 7 albums per set...priced around $45 per set.  I pretty good bargain.  Couldn't the Boys do something similiar?  I know they have more LPs (I think) than Rush...but why not break the catalog apart and maybe box 6-7 LPs at a crack?

Probably end up with a Singles Box scenario where by the volume or two sell okay but there's. O perceived market for more, so series gets cancelled. Didn't the same happen with Stars & Stripes Vol 1?

Good to know.  Rush put out 5 albums per box...plus a DVD.  What if the Boys did six LPs per box...skipping the DVD?

Set 1: Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long
Set 2: Beach Boys Concert, Today!, Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!!), Party, Pet Sounds
Set 3: Smiley Smile, Wild Honey,  Friends, 20/20, Live In London, Sunflower
Set 4: Surf's Up, "So Tough", Holland, The Beach Boys In Concert, 15 Big Ones, Love You
Set 5: M.I.U. Album, L.A. (Light Album), Keepin' the Summer Alive, The Beach Boys, Summer In Paradise, TWGMTR

This leaves out the Christmas Album, Stack-O-Tracks and Still Cruisin'.  We could debate how essential these are.  I'd definitely see the value of a bonus disc in each set collecting the odds-and-sods singles/b-sides/bonus tracks.

Price each one in the $50 dollar range (a bit low?)...but Rush did it for about that price.  Consumers could pick and choose which ones they wanted...or maybe just pick them up one or two at a time so you wouldn't have to outlay so much cash at once.

FYI - The DVD in each set was an audio DVD of one album in 5.1, not video.  I don't like how they randomly choose one album to remix into surround.  If you're doing one, do them all.  Although personally I hate 5.1 studio album mixes.  Music wasn't meant to be heard that way.

The Beatles stereo box still doesn't include all of the mono mixes, all the official BBC stuff, the Anthology albums, the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, Let It Be...Naked, LOVE, and whatever else I forgot.  The Beatles/Apple/EMI don't really give anyone a special value for the money.  The could have easily put the mono and stereo mixes on the same discs like the BB remasters, but chose not to because they know they can get away with it.

Interesting to know about the Rush sets.  Yeah, why only pick one album??  Sounds sort of gimmicky.  You're right about the Beatles stereo boxed set.  While I loved the fact that something was finally done with the catalog...I do kind of feel that EMI/Apple could have done a better job.  My biggest gripe was the fact that they chose to release the mono remasters as a separate set...though in "limited" quantities at a higher price...nor could you purchase the mono remasters on their own.  The truth is that some of the remasters sound better in mono and some sound better in stereo.

Exactly, The Hollies release mono/stereo versions of their UK albums on 1 CD for each album just like the Beach Boys did.  Beatles, no dice.  But like I said, Beatles can get away with it (and charge whatever they want).

The footage shown is of the SBILA recording. The track played, however, is the unreleased song "I'll Go Anywhere," which was meant to be part of the suite. Brian didn't finish it in time for the album.

I think the only evidence is that their lips are moving in time to that song and not the one playing. A BIT TENUOUS IMO.
