Today's song is Be True To Your School [Album Version].
I like it as much as the 45 version, maybe more. Those horns are awesome. So are the rising harmonies. And the "Hawaii"-style coda is a masterstroke. 5.

A great Dion-styled stomper. A little more (ahem) plodding than the original song, The Survivors' "Pamela Jean", but that's alright, we're none of us getting any younger. 5.

I love this lazy, doo wop-fuelled song! It and "Spirit Of America" are the standout tracks for me on LDC.

The '50s transported into the '60s. Brian's falsetto wailing is to die for. Mike's bass voice too. But the whole arrangement is top-notch. 5.

Agreed, JK. I'll give it a 24.
What strikes me especially is Brian's phrasing and control of dynamics. Vocal qualities that don't get enough study. His instincts in those areas are unique and superlative. ("are" in the historical/editorial sense)
The business of going in and out of falsetto also amazes me in this song and elsewhere. But you allude to such.
(Speaking of which, I've been listening to Jason Lytle's latest, "Last Place" (Grandaddy) and digging the same things.

Joyous stuff, despite the fact that the vehicle ain't moving fast. Love the interplay of major and minor! The chord sequence of the solo sounds familiar. Might Brian have used it somewhere else? Dang, I must read it up in Lambert's book. Anyway... 5. Edit: Lambert points out that Brian used the chord sequence of the solo 15 days later for the bridge in The Honeys' "The One You Can't Have" (here at 0:57): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2sMIhiq7AYAnd that the major--minor interplay has antecedents in pop ("My Prayer", "Runaway" "Uptown") but what Brian does with it is quite new. Surprise, surprise!

A fascinating rewrite of "THWFOS" for the car album. And their first official a cappella release, which immediately set them apart from every other pop band at the time, to say nothing of raising the bar several notches. A 5 from me.

5. No question. I can't get enough of the BBs vocal harmony. I wish they had done more a cappella!

A great closer to a great album. Some unusual harmonic progressions in there and a great bass line from Mike. 5.

One of my favorites from the earlier days. Read somewhere once that the lyrics were supplied by Rich Alarian of The Survivors.
