Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys release will make you 'SMiLE'

Fantastic news !! Now the question: Will they tour behind the album ? The Beach Boys most anticipated album and 40 years late. Going by the bands history? A bunt, although a 'Beach Boys SMiLE Live' would be a home run! Seriously though, they (together or each in their group) probably have to put some songs from Smile in the setlist, especially if it sells as well as everyone hopes. Brian and his guys know the stuff and could probably do anything, even the stuff that wasn't on BWPS. I guess Mike's guys would use "Heroes&Villains" maybe as the Cantina-version. Maybe they also use "Vegetables" (with Al, who I suppose will be part of the band again, singing lead on both). Can't see them doing "Cabin essence" though for example.

What's intriguing here is that "Cabinessence" will now have to appear in mono for the first time!
But, if it has the 1968 "20/20" vocal overdubs it will have to be "folded down" mono, because it has always been stated that the multitracks for the 1968 overdubs can't be found. Why would it have the 1968 overdubs ? Unless they retitle it The Smile (and a bit of 20/20) Sessions. Answer: because otherwise, the sections that have Carl's solo vocals(on the "20/20" mix) will be instrumental. Yes... like "Worms", "Child" and quite a few others. This is an archival release of an album whose fame rests on it never being finished. I don't see a problem. I just was about to ask what you guys think, if the finished "Surf's up" from '71 will be on the CD or just strict 60s recordings. Been there, a bit further down the thread. Hang my head in shame.... This is gonna be legendary.....

I'd prefer that the guys just have a good time and don't take it to seriously.
I strongly disagree. If they get together, then it should be done right. It's not about them having a party to me, but about the music. The music is all that counts and must not step back. And also it's a business and I wouldn't want to pay money for some "half-assed"-show. Why should I pay to see how other people have a party? They are professionals and have to deliver

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why did the BBs use Al and Bruce as producers?

Well, Bruce did also produce LA: Light Album, that I personally find fantastic on all counts!
I really like L.A., you know, but it also sounds lifeless. I'd like to know how much Jim Guercio was involved since he has a credit too. I guess they asked Bruce to produce, because he knew the guys and everyone, the drug-camp and the T.M.-camp liked and respected him. And he probably knew enough about the craziness in the band but has been away far enough for a few years not to take side with any of them. Regarding Al, I think like someone said, it was to keep it in the family. And also we have to remember that it was Al who worked mostly with Carl (and for a while Desper) in the early 70s producing the albums. He knew what to do. Unfortunately that's not to say that M.I.U. was any good. But his production on "Cottonfields" is fantastic. Had he had better material, we might think differently about his production. As far as I can say, Dennis would'nt have been a good producer for the band. First I don't believe that Mike and Al had enough respect for his musical talent (Al even regretted not taking Dennis serious enough in an interview from a few years ago). But look what happened when Bros. Studio was sold and Dennis couldn't just walk in and record whenever he wanted. When it needed planning and being on time at the studio and be sure to get a recording done in a certain time, I don't think Dennis was able to handle that at that point in his life. That's why Bambu didn't get finished. And I also can't imagine Dennis producing "Kona cost" Carl also had personal problems in '78, but I'd really think KTSA could have been better if Carl was the sole producer. I still can't get over how Bruce destroyed "Oh darlin'".

Interesting that the writer states that "all this time" [since Pet Sounds] "Brian and the boys have been working on their new record, Smiley Smile." The writer also indicates that Brian "teamed up with pianist Van Dyke Parks to write songs for the album."
In a sense, these statements are true, but I can't help but think that they set fans up for disappointment. "A year and a half of work, and we get THIS?!" Might have been better if they'd been a bit more honest... Something like "Brian and the boys worked on Good Vibrations and some other projects for the better part of a year before slapping most of Smiley Smile together in a few weeks at Brian's house. Enjoy!"
Yeah, and the strings he mentions are also nowhere to be found on SmileySmile
