The BBs and Byrds played a wild show in Virginia in Nov 1971.  The crowd was expecting the two fading groups to play strictly nostalgia and they both redused to give the people what they wanted.  McGuinn's Byrds opened and were tolerated but when the BBs also chose to stick mostly to 1968-1971 material the crowd got very hostile and there were some very mean spirited exchanges betweeen audience and band.  Finally when the BBs got into the second set and played more oldies everyone calmed down.  Shows like that illustrate why the BBs finally changed the set in 74 and intermixed the oldies more with the new stuff.

Ah-I found the source of your confusion.  The BBs and the Dead headlined another show at the Coliseum on June 8 1974 and that had Commander Cody and the New Riders as opening acts.  But that show had no Chicago

Mikie-I went and poked around in my archives.  Commander Cody was not at that show.  He played at the second day on the green a few weeks later with the Grateful Dead and the Doobie Brothers-and with Elton John in attendance.

Mikie-My review of the 1975 Oakland show (Hayward Daily Review May 30 1975) states that Bobe Seger opened the show  "He did a strong version of Katmandu from his latest Capitol LP" and that he was followed by Richard Torrance and Eureka.  Then Chicago and the BBs.  No mention of Commander Cody or the New Riders. 

Boss City may have been taped before a live audience but it did not air right away.  The BBs appeared on the Nov 19 1966 edition to plug Good Vibrations.  They had taped the appearance over a month before, however-during the week of Oct 14-20 1966.  I have an article that discusses how this girl who won a contest got to meet the BBs and the Turtles backstage at the taping.  Not sure when Brian's solo app was but I am sure he taped it prior to the BB app.

By the way Keith Badman wrote in his book that the promo film was shot on October 23, but this is incorrect.  The Beach Boys flew to the Midwest to play concerts no later than the morning of October 21 1966 and did not return to LA till after a European and American tour.  The film was probably shot at an earlier date in October. 

Have to note-though David is a friend-that he added a timeline from AGD's site-based on the research of AGD and I-which is constantly updated and many of the dates he stated have since been altered based on info I found.  So handle with care.

Just to clear up a thing or two asked earlier in the thread.  The Dec 21 1963 app in Sacramento that was taped for the Concert LP (and combined with the Aug 1 1964 show to make the finished album) was Brian's first app in Sacramento.  The BBs did an interview for The Sacramento Union prior to the show in which they noted that the Dec app would be Brian's first in Sacramento-because he had busy with recordings on their two previous trips there.  So to answer an earlier question there is proof that he was not at the Sept 14 1963 app.   That being said-Bgas never answered where the proof was that the photo is from 9/28/63 Cow Palace with Dee Dee Sharp.  That would be news-since I believe DM recalled Brian being at those big shows in late Sept 63.  Maybe that photo is really from June 63-when we know that the BBs did a Hawaiian tour with Al in place of Brian.
-Also wanted to throw out there this tidbit:  In a Nov 1964 Disc & Music Echo interview-while staying at the Hilton in London-Carl notes that HIS PARENTS HAD BEEN TO ENGLAND BEFORE AND TOLD HIM TO VISIT A BUNCH OF SIGHTS IF HE HAD TIME.  Now this doesn't mean that their visit was in Sept 61 but it is interesting to note that the Wilsons had been in the UK once without their kids.  Hard to imagine that they could have left the kids alone much earlier than 1961-without children's welfare agencies getting involved.

But that is for me what makes some of the later BB albums interesting.  There will be 6 or 7 pleasant but forgettable tracks and then one that just stops you in your tracks.  Like that reviewer of MIU said-listen to My Dianne and know that the flame still burns.  I kind of agree-I think MIU is pleasant-but pretty saccharine and then all the sudden that song comes on and you realize that the record could have been so much more.  The Night Was So Young on Love You is also pretty intense.  I also think on Brian Wilson-the river section of Rio Grande is pretty amazing

Should be noted-that the date of the WPLJ taping is now established as February 23 1971.  The day before the Carnegie Hall show-which used to be listed as Feb 20 but we now know was Feb 24 1971.  AGD has it correctly listed at the tours/sessions section of Bellagio.

should be stated that the Gigs/Sessions info at Bellagio is pretty damn accurate (and I should know cuz I compiled a lot of it) but some of those early 62 shows are not certain as to dates.  The Rainbow Gardens shows may or may not have taken on those exact dates-I have never seen an ad, flyer or anything on them. All I know is that Bob Eubanks told David Leaf for his Beach Boys Book that he paid the group 150 dollars to play there. Ron Swallow also recalled them playing there a few times.  But the dates we list are the best we have for now.  Badman listed the dates of Feb 16 and 17 but his source is unknown to me.  That being said-since so many of Badman's dates turned out to be wrong-I was ready to chuck all his dates when I got a hold of East LA Community College papesr from 62 and found confirmation (ads) for all his Pandora's Box listings-so Keith did have some decent sources for some of his 62 info-though I don't know what they were.  Another fellow named Rory supplied the March dates for more Rainbow Gardens shows-but never gave up the source of his info.

Interestingly enough-Bruce told a reporter in Albuquerque on July 15 1968 that "Can't Wait Too Long" would be the BB's next single.  An interesting might have been-clearly the release of that single in July 1968 would have been a critical event-it really has all that Brian dynamism that was fading at that point and would have been greeted as a return to form.  In my opinion it is the best unreleased Brian song of the late 60s.  If it had been completed-it would have been an awesome single-less retro than "Do It Again."

What I find interesting is that Brian produced a Redwood version of "Time" than he rewrote some of the words and recorded vocals (dual lead-he and Carl) that fall (the unreleased version on Hawthorne) and then the group recorded a version closer to the original Redwood version for 20/20.  Personally I prefer the Hawthorne version-because I prefer the dual lead with Brian and Carl in their prime. 

I should add to this thread that when I was doing research for the TV/Film articles on the BBs that I contributed to ESQ-I got in touch with the David Frost archives and the Carson archives people. They were quite nice and took the time to answer all my questions.  As I feared-the "Lost" Frost app from May 1971 where Dennis performed "Forever" and "Lady" and the BBs sang "Vegetables" was indeed destroyed.  Clearly-however-there is an audio tape of this app-since it has been booted.  It also had a cool interview where Dennis discussed filming Two Lane Blacktop.  The Carson people also told me the same thing-the BBs made two 1968 apps on the show-with Johnny as host and both are gone.  The May 2 68 app would have been fascinating-because it was basically the BBs promoting their about to begin tour with Maharishi and talking about why TM is so great-plus singing "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" and some "Friends" songs.  There is an audio tape of this too I should add-but tragically only the songs not the interview.  That being said-it is always possible that a fan made a kinescope of one of these shows that may turn up

By the way the pics of Brian and BBs with Maharishi can be dated to sometime between January 19-23 1968. That is when the Maharishi did a brief visit to some U.S. colleges and the BBs met up with him and dragged Brian along to meet him (Maharishi's visit was publicized in many papers).  Funnily enough-despite all his travails-Brian sometimes has a good memory (depending on when you catch him)...in an interview from the late 80s (which is in Kingsley Abbotts compilation) Brian recalls meeting the person interviewing him when they were both at an airport to greet the Maharishi.

By the way-speaking of the Mixtures-I saw a piece on them where they recalled playing at Pop Leuder's in Compton with the Beach Boys on a bunch of occasions in 1962.  Obviously Compton was a very different town back then.

Very true-see if you can find out the date of her sister's birthday-that would be very cool info to have.  We know they played a lot of shows-many of them for free to gain promotion-in that exciting summer of 62 but we actually have very few nailed down dates.  Their first Capitol single came out and they played in parking lots, malls, on the roofs of radio stations, took part in all sorts of events.  Also signed records at various places.

Yes- I am aware of one played for the head of their fan club that summer and another for a local debutante in Sept 62.  Also they played at Milton Berle's daughter's party as mentioned in the Stebbins-Marks book

I will add this-as Jon has pointed out there is not a single photo of the BBs with Al in the Nov 61-Mar 62 BB Mark 1 period.  We always hear about how the band started in Nov 61 but I think it is fair to say that at first it may have been more of a lark than a career.  There isn't much evidence that they were playing tons of gigs in that period--more like every weekend since they had class during the week.  No ads exist for the Rainbow Gardens shows-so the dates may or may not be correct (though there is no doubt that they played there).  As to whether they were a 4 piece-we assume they were since Al seems to have left in February-but the exact details are fuzzy. I have never met anyone who actually says they were at one of those shows and what the band looked like.

He did get through the flight to and back from Australia in 1964 just fine-you are thinking of Houston 11 months later. Australia tour was January 1964-Brian toured till Dec 1964 (including a Nov 1964 trip to Europe).

Should be noted that the BBs taped the Nov 23 1972 shows because they were recording their In Concert LP.  They then took these recordings and stuff from the Nov 72 Passaic show and made a tape-but after playing it to various parties they decided it didn't cut the mustard and they ended up scrapping the album and waiting till the summer of 73 to try again. Some of the songs from Passaic are on the 73 release but not from Carnegie Hall. Perhaps Brian influenced them-he told a 73 interviewer that when they played him the 72 tapes he was underwhelmed.  Exact quote "I just didn't think it was that good."  A few recordings of course showed up on the Endless Harmony release.
