The US charts in the early '60s were certainly full of surprises. Dick and Dee Dee's "The Mountain's High", a huge favourite of mine, was utterly out of left field (and a B-side to boot) but reached #2 in 1961. That vocal stack is really weird but it works!

Here's interesting post for you. :3d Before The Mamas & Papas, Cass Elliot used to be in a band The Big 3. It's trio - she, Tim Rose & her then-husband Jim Hendricks. They've got self-titled album, there is curio "The Banjo Song" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdor8y9JxKs). Date: 1963. As you hear, they slapped Stephen Foster's "Oh Susanna" lyrics to totally different melody written (& sung) by Tim Rose. The other lead is Cass. Did anybody catch the trick? It bears resemblance to Shocking Blue's hit "Venus" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPEhQugz-Ew) which will be out 6 years later! Mariska Veres sings the lead, in the middle 8 she even does the wordless vocal like Cass. The guitar riff etc. - case of "great minds think alike". That said, "The Banjo Song" is way cool. Cass got groove & the raspy chap jolly good.

Mama Cass was simply fabulous.

Wonder was Michelle called Mama. I prefer to say Cass Elliot.

"The Wanderer" was Dion's finest hour in my opinion. I bought it when it was released back in '62.

I couldn't agree more. After a big build-up with some fantastic music, the counterculture was an anti-climax. I reckon '66 was the last great year of that decade----just my opinion, mind.

Guess it's a generational thing. I grew up listening to lots of girl groups and still love to sing along with them.

HOWEVER...
Thinking about it, for some reason the girl groups in the 60s aren't as adventurous harmonically as, say, the BBs or the Four Seasons.
Not that we can't have wonderful harmonies - listen to the Andrews Sisters (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, or Bei Mir Bist du Schon) or, better yet, the Boswell Sisters (Crazy People, Roll on Mississippi).

It's not about ge-ge-ge-neration :P - to my ears, the stack of girl voices sound silly. Solo female artists - yes. Brother & sister a la the Carpenters - yes, as it combines both type of voices. The boy groups like BBs etc. sound good too. But when it's multi-girls, I don't like it. Exceptions: "Mr. Sandman" & some of the Supremes tunes. I like Diana Ross. But you're right that 60s girl groups not very interesting, they're kinda the same. I listened before to Andrews Sisters - not bad. If the poster "Ron" were here, you'd've good chat about them. He's big fan.

I've got their album, it's good. Iirc, they didn't tour, just studio work. But NRBQ is revered band, fans the likes of Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, even Bob Dylan.

I recall Al Anderson saying he wrote "Ridin' in My Car" after listening to "The Beach Boys Today."  Was always a big "Q" fan.  Terry's new version (without Joey -- Sacre Bleu!) is good too.  Here's a band influenced by the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Lovin' Spoonful; Sun Ra, Thelonius Monk, and  Jerry Lee Lewis; the three Stooges...got out records by Skeeter Davis, the Shaggs, and other "outsider" music -- you get the picture!  For my money at their best at their poppiest or when they're groovin' in orbit -- most of the time with their magic golden era rhythm section.

Another NYGG hit from '63 (sorry folks). It's the decidedly spooky "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" by The Jaynetts, with a wonderful trick fade. This is the version you want, with organ (unfortunately with a silly image----The Jaynetts were African-American):

Al BBs fan? I knew that Tom was. & Terry said in interview the songs he write with falsetto bring to mind BW but it's not influenced by BW & that whilst it's nice thing to say, he'd try to avoid it. Not sure about Spampinato bros. But the band as diverse as BBs & they got really good singers ( except the drummer? iirc he did sing live). Did you buy recent 50 year boxset? "High Noon", 5 CDs.

As for 1966 as a whole, I couldn't agree more. (Others opt for '65 or even '67 but I don't buy that.) What an incredible year for music!

Yeah, Tommy was the big BW fan, not sure of the others.  Didn't know about the box set until you mentioned it.   I owned all their LPs through "Gotta Be Loose" or so -- part way through the Johnny era.  Saw them a number of times in various forms -- always great, often transcendent.  Terry is maybe a genius of the 88's and probably one of the most charismatic live performers I've ever witnessed -- in his own bizarre way.  But he was at his best in the classic line up.

On looking up the NRBQ box set I was led to "The Flat Five," two members of which are in the current no-Spaminato NRBQ.  There are mostly just live videos on youTube (including takes of "Let Him Run Wild" and "Kites are Fun"), but some amazing vocals and great tunes.  Some reminiscent of prime Wondermints as a first impression.

Cool you got to see them! They're fun to see in youtube but in flesh might be better. Agreed about Terry, "bizarre" is right way to describe him. I like his piano style & eccentric stage behavior. I read that they don't keep setlist, rather perform random choices given what the crowd likes at this particular gig. Is it true? Have you got any recollections from some of the shows? Funny banter etc. Did you get them to sign the autographs?

Their vids were posted in the BBs Media topic "The Rolling BBs covers thread". That's where I discovered them. Didn't know some of the band is in NRBQ line-up. Thanks for telling. Nice covers.

1st time i saw them was promoting "Scraps" and opening for BB King, soon after Al joined but before Tommy and they still had the lead singer Frankie Galder.  Last time was about a dozen years ago with Johnny.  And both those times were excellent.  Saw the "classic" Al Anderson/Tommy Ardolino/Joey Spaminato/Terry Adams version about a half dozen times and  they were always great -- sometimes a little sloppy but when they hit the note they hit the note.  Best was likely at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill NC promoting "At Yankee Stadium" in the summer of '78.  With Tommy they just swung and it opened my mind to that concept.  Funny bit they did (among others) was  in the middle Terry yells "Union  Break!" and they stop playing, sit down, someone lights a cig, someone opens a sandwich, they shoot the sh*t among themselves for about 5 minutes and then Terry yells "back to work!" and they start playing again!

I've always been reluctant to approach my heroes. About 8 years ago Terry sat in with and old buddy of mine's band in South Fla (where he lives I believe).  There were maybe 25 people there but I got the "don't talk  to me' vibe from him.  So I didn't.  If I'd ever seen Tommy I would have definitely pulled his coat.

Frankie is such good singer, too bad he quit. Definitely best singer during any line-up change. Envious you got to see him. "Scraps" is very good, it differs in style with their 60s album. I read that Tommy was big fan & would go to their shows after them & that's how he got the place & easy to get along with. Is it true?

didn't see Darlene Love mentioned in this thread.     To me, she is the greatest voice of the era.   and those songs were written by some of the best New York song writers of the era.  Yes, That crazy -uck Spector gets a lot of credit, and the Wrecking Crew was THE best, but Darlene was the heart and soul of that sound (apologies to Ronnie fans).    and she still has that voice and energy.  Drove 500 miles to see her Christmas show last year.    He's a Rebel. 1963.  he's Sure the Boy I Love, Today I met The Boy I' m Gonna Marry......This is the stuff that transports me to that place in my head that still resides in the year before the Beatles hit.  Sweet stuff indeed.  Glad you folks are out there to share these memories.

Okay to link it again!  I'm a fairly big Association fan - a few of the albums on vinyl, including the Good-bye Columbus soundtrack.  On Cd I have the 2-disc Rhino which covers a lot of ground.

You picked the 45 version.  They did this really great live, too.  Was lucky enough to see them a couple of times in the late sixties.  Got to meet them!  Everybody that came to my hometown stayed at the Holiday Inn, so there was no hiding.  My very favorite song by them as well.

Each band is good; to my ears, Left Banke is best example of baroque pop - is it what they dub it? - & it's intricate, to the point that when I listened to "There's gonna be a storm" comp, I couldn't memorize any track! It's the single band which songs I played then forgot what they were like. The many key & chord changes really mess with the brain. But once I figured, me & Left Banke became friends. :3d

Ha! Actually, Lewisohn suggests the song was performed by Paul. Here's what he writes in the book (pg. 668):

The Beatles' intense drive to stay one step ahead of every rival (and they were already at least fifty clear) was taken to extremes by Paul in July/August 1962 when sleuthing songs unknown or unconsidered by others. A good find was "Nobody But You," a B-side by a group from Towson, Maryland, called the Lafayettes. Beyond a mawkish introduction, this was a strong call-and-response number in the style of Kansas City.

In fact, funny you should send me that song now because over the last few days I have been working on a cover of Walk Upon The Water. Both that song and listening just now to Grass Grow illustrate what a powerhouse their drummer was.

Joe Meek is a name that looms large in early to mid '60s pop in the UK. A tortured genius, he masterminded a whole host of wonderful sounding 45s, often by artists who by their own admission couldn't sing. This was no impediment to sound wizard Meek----they always ended up sounding like professionals! His backing musicians were another matter----these included many great names of later years.

Baby Please Don't Go, by Them with Van Morrison on vocals. Just heard it on the radio, and it's one of those classic records that has as little as one note or one brief musical moment that nails the whole thing. In this case, it's that one "out" flatted 5th guitar note under a menacing bass line that slays me every time. Sounds like something really bad is about to go down in a dark alley somewhere.

I got interested in Carl Perkins after becoming a fan of Elvis back in the 70s.  Listening to his Sun recordings led me to explore Perkins. I bought a 45 of Matchbox at an old record store. Also a 45 of Blue Suede Shoes b/w Honey Don't. Those are some great records.
just spent an enjoyable time listening to these records along with Elvis' Mystery Train (one of my all time favorites).

A radio station has temporarily gone to a "Beach Music" format.
I was introduced to Beach Music, also known as Carolina Beach Music, when I lived in North Carolina in the early 1980s. Beach Music is popular primarily in North and South Carolina, and also in the coastal areas of Virginia, Maryland, and perhaps Pennsylvania. Basically, what is known as the US Middle Atlantic States.
Beach Music is r and b that can be adaptable to the dance known as the Shag.
A number of regional groups are known for this type of music, such as The Tams, The Tymes, and The Chairmen of the Board.  Also other groups/singers such as The Drifters, Gene Chandler, have songs that fit the mold.

Re: Perkins, his Sun recordings are imo among the best things recorded at the Memphis Recording Service. Charlie Rich's recordings as well (most of them weren't released on Sun but on Phillips International etc.). That's where the real stuff is. Perkins' version of "Only you" kinda summarizes everything Sun Records was and wanted to be: It's not "beautiful", but it's raw and - to quote Sam Phillips - R-E-A-L. The guitar break just kills me everytime I hear it:

If I'd have to point to a record that defines music with "soul", this one would be one of them.

Not to forgert that Carl cut a lot of other great records after he left Sun. He was such a great songwriter, guitar player and singer. If there was any kind of justice, he would be one of the biggest names in country music to this day. He was not as versatile as Presley (few people are) but when it comes to country and Rock'n'Roll Carl could give Presley a run for his money.

Just listened to this version, as I'm not familiar with Susan Maughan. The version that was a hit in the US was done earlier in 1962 by teenager Marcie Blane.

Hearing that song brings back good memories. I went on a month long camping/backpacking adventure throughout the US southwest in May-June 1979, 11 of us crammed into a VW bus. One of the group liked the song Bobby's Girl and sang it several times during the trip.

It is indeed infectious! Lloyd Price recorded one of my all-time favourite r&b 45s, "Lawdy Miss Clawdy". Dating from 1952, it's more rock and roll than r&b to these ears. That's Fats Domino on piano (see PJ Riverdale's comment):

I'm listening to a countdown on the 60s satellite channel. The top 600 songs of the 60s as voted on by listeners. Listening on our satellite TV which has Sirius music channels (for those with DISH satellite it's channel 6006).

Didn't catch the first few hours so don't know what the lucky 600th song was. Picked it up in the lower 500s. Surprised at some of the songs there as why they were ranked so low. Wonderful songs (my opinion) such as Ruby Tuesday, Another Saturday Night, White Room. Penny Lane. Speaking of Penny Lane, Love Me Do (ugh!) was ranked higher!
Some nice surprises such as Vito and the Salutations' take on Unchained Melody, so different from the Righteous Brothers ' version.

As to songs BB fans would be interested in, The Regents' Barbara Ann was 512, and The Trade Winds' wonderful New York's a Lonely Town was 489. Away for a few hours of sleep, Dead Mans Curve was 308.

As for the BBs, shocking to hear WIBN at 484!
Be True to Your School was 453, Do You Wanna Dance 324. After waking up to All Along the Watchtower, Sloop John B was 293. Little Deuce Coupe 259.
Since they played a bit of DWB in one of the "teasers," I assume it Will be in there somewhere.

Will be listening throughout the day as I can while doing chores etc. Interesting to see people's music preferences and how they differ from mine.

Me too! Having a great time listening. Didn't hear the entire program, but listened for a few hours here and there. Darlin' was in the upper 500s, and I think that Don't Worry Baby was right around the 100 mark. The highest BBs' song was California Girls, at number 5.

Teenyboppers such as Frankie Avalon (Venus) but also great songs like At the Hop, Blueberry Hill, Yakkety Yak. Presently playing is Kingston Trio's Tom Dooley.

One other thing I noticed about the top 600 of the 60s, voted on by listeners:
There was one song that stood in the way of the Beach Boys dominating the top of the charts during the latter part of 1966.
That song didn't even make the top 600 list.
The song? Winchester Cathedral...

Another novelty song! Others like it that kept far worthier contenders out of the US top slot were "Dominique" (in French) and "Sukiyaki" (in Japanese!).

I may just be biased but it seems to me that Americans over the years have been more susceptible to novelty records than Europeans...

Just played "Barefootin'" by Robert Parker, who just passed away at the age of 89.
This was his only hit - made the top 10 in 1966 in the US and also charted in the UK. He was primarily a sax player and played on numerous hits for performers down in these parts including Fats Domino.

I was thinking of "Barefootin'" only this morning!

I didn't know his history. I must look at his wiki page for examples of his sax work.
