Title: The Beatles Survivor #1 Winner: Twist and Shout
Post by: pixletwin on July 20, 2016, 07:26:08 PM
After a looooong break, I thought I would ressurect the old Survivor threads, but this time touching on The Beatles.

Quote
Please Please Me is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. Parlophone rush-released the album on 22 March 1963 in the United Kingdom to capitalise on the success of the singles "Please Please Me" (No. 1 on most lists though only No. 2 on Record Retailer)[6] and "Love Me Do" (No. 17).

Of the album's 14 songs, eight were written by Lennon–McCartney (originally credited "McCartney–Lennon"), early evidence of what Rolling Stone later called "[their invention of] the idea of the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments."[7] In 2012, Please Please Me was voted 39th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."[8]

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on July 23rd.

I Saw Her Standing There
Misery
Anna
Chains
Boys
Ask Me Why
Please Please Me
Love Me Do
P.S. I Love You
Baby It's You
Do You Want To Know A Secret
A Taste of Honey
There's A Place
Twist and Shout

I love that this album (with a few exceptions) was recorded in one day. Even for the time, that must've been a rare occurrence. It's in my top five albums from The Beatles. Still, the nature of the game is to pick your LEAST favorite track and, for me, that is "Chains".

Your turn folks! Let's get this game back up on it's beatley feet!  :3d

(sorry mods. I tried to create this in the Polls section, but the site wouldn't let me)

As one of the other songs on this album says, "I can't conceive of any more...misery"

Misery is my pick.

This is terrific! I enjoyed the BBs survivor game. Smb. said smwr about the album's cover being foreseeing - from right John's death, then George's. Funny what you read. :police:

This is tough as I dislike equally "Anna", "Ask Me Why", "Misery" & "Baby It's You".  But the latter wins - too slow & boring.
"Baby It's You".

Gonna go with Boys.... Probably won't be the last time I'll choose a Ringo song as the first to go

Would like to add that this thread is bringing back some amusing memories.
Being in the US, Capitol in its wisdom(?) put out different Beatles albums than in the UK. As a almost 7 year old (March 1964 birthday) remember my sister bringing home the Meet the Beatles lp. I absolutely loved the cover and spent who knows how long looking it over as the album played on the hi fi.

A little while later my sister got another album, Introducing the Beatles, put out by VeeJay. The first reaction to seeing that album cover was - Ycch! The picture of it online doesn't do justice to the ugliness of it. The poor guys looked positively sickly. Anyway, that album had songs that were on the UKs Please Please Me album. Perhaps it's because I heard these songs after Meet the Beatles, most of them are underwhelming in comparison.

This is not easy and I'm not sure I can even honestly participate given the fact that every Beatles song has been a crucial part of my life since I was about four years old.

But for now I'll say: A Taste of Honey

Although I can't stand Misery, it doesn't seem to generate as much distaste in others.

There are 2 others that should definitely go. One was inexplicably a #1 hit.

But for this round, my pick is CHAINS.

Though I voted in round one, I think I'm going to sit a few rounds out now. I don't know this album so well as others and there's a whole lot of tracks I have no great love for, but don't hate either. It's only when we get down to to the final six or so I think I'll feel particularly strongly.

There are four songs on this album that I don't care for at all:
  Misery
  Chains
Love Me Do ( how on earth was that a #1 song?)
  Baby It's You

Actually didn't dislike the two voted off thus far; Taste of Honey was "meh," take it or leave it, and thought Boys was kind of fun actually, a fun rocker.

I vote Chains again.

Love Me Do ( how on earth was that a #1 song?)

It wasn't.

According to wikipedia, initially, it peaked at #17 in the UK. It ended up going #1 in the U.S. during Beatlemania. Also, #1 in Australia. Really shows you how intense Beatlemania was in 1964. Americans really couldn't get enough. They were buying Canadian imports of Love Me Do with Ringo on drums prompting the release of the Andy White version in April of '64. Lennon/McCartney had seven of their songs hit #1 in 1964! Amazing.

My vote is for Do You Want To Know A Secret.

I played this last Saturday night, mono - from the Mono Box.  Would suggest everybody do that.

Ask Me Why, reluctantly. I enjoy the vocals. Had I voted last round it would have also been for Love Me Do. These songs have never been favorites of mine, but they've been growing on me. In the case of Love Me Do, I'm reminded how I miss John's harmonica playing on the later albums.

Love Me Do has never been a favorite of mine but I think that harmonica sound alone is iconic so I'm surprised to see it gone so soon.  Also, I saw Paul live a few weeks ago and he's been doing an acoustic version on this tour and it's pretty awesome.

As for my vote, still goes to Anna.

I predict it's going to come down to Twist and Shout, Please Please Me, and I Saw Her Standing There.  And that's when it's going to get tough!

I think that live John energy works on 'twist and shout', but the song itself, is just 'meh'.
No matter who does it.  A bit like the song 'shout', it's 'meh', just not musically exciting I think for me.
maybe heard it too much, maybe played it too much in bands...

Yes indeed! Those early tracks with harmonica are like nothing else before or since (except perhaps "Hey! Baby").

The harmonica tracks are part of what makes the early songs unique, as does the three-part harmonies - like on "This Boy."
Two of my favorite Beatles harmonica tracks are "Little Child" and "I Should Have Known Better."

Hey John, we're going to do Bruce Channel next!  "Hey! Baby" - loved Conway Twitty's rockin' Country version in 1970, with steel guitar replacing the harmonica.  Arthur Alexander (writer of "Anna" and "You Better Move On"), and big Lennon influence ("Soldier of Love" and "A Shot of Rhythm and Blues) did a great version.  Channel's version is the best, with Delbert McClinton on harmonica (who Lennon met when The Beatles were second-billed to Channel, 21 June 1962).

My vote goes to "Baby It's You" - the best version of this song.  I always liked Costello's take as well.

The Beatles version has energy but I like the song itself. Beatles were good as studio band, John & Paul live esp. seemed nervous.

John always sang T&S with a bit  more soul live. The PPM version is far more shouty than he typically sang.

I didn't say it was with less soul - I said generally, the Beatles weren't that good live; it shows that they didn't like touring & would rather work quietly in the studio.

I think part of the problem was that they couldn't hear themselves.  Concert PAs were nothing in the early to mid 60s, and with all the screaming, it was impossible to hear.  That, and the fact that their studio compositions were getting increasingly difficult to reproduce live, lead to their getting off the road fifty years ago this month.

If you really want to check out some Beatles live stuff, their BBC releases are quite good.

The 1st thing listed seems like poor excuse. Other artists were equally good live as in the studio, despite the technical issues. Then, the BBs performed their challenging tracks live & I don't just say Pet Sounds.

But, few other bands dealt with the mania that greeted The Beatles at their concerts.

But, while they did deal with some issues, I really wouldn't say The Beatles were a poor live band.

And to address pixletwin, John's voice was pretty much shredded by the time they recorded T&S.  It was the last song recorded during a marathon session, and he basically had to shout to produce any kind of usable vocal.

The Beatles became the most popular band in Liverpool before they had a recording contract precisely because of the strength of their live act. Keep in mind, too, that Liverpool was the English city at that time where rock and roll music was actually being played live. The Beatles had the capacity for being one of the best live bands but their act had to be structured due to the immense pressure they were under and the rigid schedule that they had. But I do urge anyone to listen to the December 1962 Hamburg show to discover the kind of live act The Beatles genuinely were. The first hand accounts largely discussed what a thrilling experience The Beatles were live.

In early years they were good but it doesn't show in youtube videos of when they became famous & got cult status. The show in Japan, f.ex., is very weak. Despite John shredding his voice, "Twist & shout" ended up being very energetic in the studio. From youtube videos seen, The Beatles seemed very static & very nervous. Not the definition of "good live band". I listened to Hamburg shows but didn't refer to them. When they got famous, with albums, they weren't good live.

John agrees with you. Their manager, Brian Epstein, sort of knocked all the rough edges from them when he took over managing them. It had a huge influence on their live performance. Compound that with not being able to hear themselves play for the next 3 years and it is what it is.

I really do like Ask Me Why.  But, I also like every song on PPM.  There's a Place might be my favorite, for the lyrics.  It just beat In My Room to the punch.

One person just couldn't see her standing in the final three. 4 smilers refuse to shake  it up, twist and shout. But finally, 8 smilers decided there wasn't a place for There's A Place.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Final round is here. Just a reminder on how that works. This time we are not voting for least favorite. Of the final three you must pick which song you think is the BEST and the MOST DESERVING of the title "SURVIVOR".

Vote your favorite of the remaining three. Go!

Tally on September 20.

Twist and Shout

Round#10 Misery September 10
Round#11 There's A Place September 15

The top 3 are a unique representation of the Beatles at this stage. Twist and Shout is a cover. Please Please Me is a song written mostly by John. I Saw Her Standing There is a song written mostly by Paul. ISHST is a great way to open the album. The bass line really drives the whole song forward. Please Please Me has interesting vocal harmonies.Twist and Shout creates an energy that is difficult to rival...

In the end I will go with the song I have the most fun singing and playing.

Please Please Me.

My favorite songs from this album are:  "There's A Place" and "Ask Me Why" and "Anna" -in that order.

The three that are left are all very very good, because The Beatles were very very good.  The best band the UK ever produced.

"Twist and Shout" by The Beatles is my favorite version of that song.  I love many of the cover versions they did, one of which is in my Top 3.  John was my favorite singer and writer in The Beatles when I was living thru the times.
Paul had plenty of great songs, and they wrote many many great songs together.  They both added little touches to each others songs to make them better.  John just had so much more Soul in their early days.  Paul couldn't equal that until 1966.

Then something happened...  I'll talk about that when we get there.

What I should have made more clear about my thoughts on "Twist and Shout" is that this performance was not the best, not the best John could do, cover or not.  I don't think it was a great idea to record an album in a day.  I'm sure they thought so too.  Their second album blew the first one away.  We all noticed the six weak numbers, and voted them out in the first six rounds, one after another.

I see these last three standing as almost a tie, but I will pick one:

"Please Please Me"

... the Stones made I Wanna Be Your Man (from With The Beatles) their own!
Hey Rei,  nice to see you are still around.  I see you over on the SHF as well.

I don't think the Stones made it their own, exactly.  They gave it their own unique spin.  As you know, the Stones were basically a covers band in their early days.  They bested many songs with a cover.  It was great they were still playing it on a recent tour.  The Stones sure do beat Paul's lame live version.  The Beatles version?  That's right around the corner.  >

I can't be doing with kicking stuff out but the top track for me (on a genius debut album of all good tracks) is "There's A Place", if only for the harmonica and the intervals between the voices.

It's a song of few notes where every single note counts...

Please Please Me vs Twist and Shout... I've been agonizing over this decision for days! :lol I think Please Please Me is a more interesting song and I really love the harmonies and the "C'Mon" section, but I have to go with the iconic Twist and Shout. I love that the Beatles repeated the build up and had a complete ending. For me, it really enhances the experience. Also, the build up itself in the Beatles version is IMO one of the most exciting moments in rock n roll history (along with She Loves You) and perfectly captures the energy of Beatlemania. Interestingly, I just picked up the new release of Live at Hollywood Bowl and was reminded that the Beatles began performing Twist and Shout by jumping from the intro straight to the build up. Assuming that they were performing that song first to kick off the set (as it was sequenced on the live album), what a fantastic idea! Listening to that was a revelation.

Also, for those who have only heard Please Please Me in stereo I recommend listening to the mono version. John's vocal flub and laugh (though endearing) and the odd speed problem at the end of the stereo version are not present in the mono version.

So, I vote for Twist and Shout.

Aha!! Thank you! I had all the Capitol lps when I was a kid then at some point replaced them with CDs and whenever I've listened to Please Please Me, I've felt a little irked, feeling like it had a sanitized or... something was different. I'm missing the flub and laugh! I will have to go find a stereo version for nostalgia's sake.

I wouldn't quite go that far. For the Stones, it was their first major single (as much as I like Come On), and features not only a prominent and memorable Wyman bass line, but also the first slide guitar work on a British pop/rock single, courtesy of Brian Jones.... back in 1963 there really was nothing like it

You & your Wyman. :police: I know you're big fan of his but I don't consider him very spectacular bass player. Competent, good but that's it. But then, I know nothing about guitars, never played any, other than toy guitar. Imo Keith is/was better bass player. Source: ears. :police:

The thing with Keith is that he's a typical guitarist playing bass - and it shows. Any doubts about Wyman's abilities would be blown away by his terrific work on songs such as Miss You, 19th Nervous Breakdown, 2120 South Michigan Avenue... etc. He was also brilliant on the early R&B covers such as Around And Around and Route 66 - now there's a bassist who can really swing  :rock... Always a joy and a challenge to cover on bass IMO

I'm aware of those songs you mentioned, in fact "2120 South Michigan Avenue" is in my Top 30 by the Stones & among favorite instrumentals. The bass there is "fat" & groovy but in principle, Bill Wyman isn't good bassist imo. I didn't say that Keith is good, only if compare with Wyman.
good for you to play bass as Bill though.

We have a tie.

6 votes for Please Please Me and 6 votes for Twist and Shout.

The first new vote for either one is the SURVIVOR...

Come one. One more person needs to vote.

Yes, that's right. No more votes should go. There were 7 votes. pixletwin, don't count more votes. That wouldn't be fair.

Edit: pixletwin, just counted votes for "Please" - it has 5 votes, NOT 6 - 1) yours, 2) Rocky Raccoon's, 3) Emily, 4) bringahorseinhere & 5) feelsflow. Then if you count Ognir Rrats, it will THEN be 6. But with 7 votes the winner still is "Twist & Shout": 1) B.E. 2) RangeRover 3) Chocolate Shake 4) Rei / Labe, Son Of Nat 5) Gertie 6) jiggy22 7) bummerinparadise.

Yeah, I was just about to say that it's no tie and it's pretty clear who the winner is

Thanks for double checking folks. I'll take a quick verifying look and make it official, then it's on to With The Beatles. :)

Only five smilers felt pleased enough to vote for Please Please Me. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

And for the winner of the first bout of Beatles Survivor, I'd like to ask your help. If the seven of you who voted for Twist and Shout would just clap your hands... and the rest of us will just rattle our jewelry.

Yes, that pesky Emily nearly destroyed the plans. It was obvious from the start which track will win.

Anyway, glad for "Twist & Shout"! Yahoo!

"With the Beatles" game started, Rei - add your vote there. :police:

Edit: thanks to pixletwin for not counting the 6th vote, 5-7 was settled win for "Twist & Shout". Not this gibberish "It's a tie with 6 votes for each". Must listen to what posters say or count accurately next time.

I hang my head, and walk away with my horsie tail between my legs.
I must say I'm a wee tad disappointed.  but hey.
It's a great album anyway, terrific debut period.
