So guys, I'm thinking about making a whole animated music video for Male Ego.  I have it all in my head: 

It starts with a pan over a beautiful California landscape, oceans, cliffs, sunshine, working its way down to a crowded street.   Mike eagle slinks into the scene, a closeup of his head, and he starts singing.  The camera pulls back slowly until he's full bodied, strutting down the street to the beat of the song.  Then Brian eagle walks into frame and starts singing his part and waving his arms wildly.  Sexy girls keep walking by, Mike keeps turning his head as they pass, being his usual creeper self.  At some point a really bodacious babe walks by and Mike eagle does the old eyes-pop-out-of-his-head, tongue-rolls-out-of-his-mouth thing, his baseball cap pops off his head and spins in the air, and we see that he has a big bald spot on top, truly making him a bald eagle.

So, should I do it?

How about I color it in all nicely in the computer and make the print available at my Society6 store (http://society6.com/dellydel/prints) along with my other BBs stuff?  Yes, that is what I'll do!  Stay tuned for a nice color version soon!  And maybe I can add in some other little details I wanted, like Blondie and Ricky in a desert island in the background, and Jeff holding on to a buoy.

I genuinely think those songs are all pretty terrific.  Male Ego really is some kind of crazy masterpiece, I think.  It's weird, I used to be turned off by the crazy 80s production values, but now I see that as one of this album's strengths.  If I were making the ultimate Beach Boys mix that spanned their ENTIRE CAREER, I'd be picking at least a handful of songs from each of the post 76 albums. (ok maybe not SiP)  

And yeah, Lahaina Aloha is fan-fucking-tastic.

Eh? It is hard but not impossible. I have seen it loads of times in the lives of friends and family.

No I know, I don't mean to imply that people don't change (but do they?) or can't change (but can they?)   I've changed plenty (or did I?!), and so have many of my friends (or have they!?!), so yeah, anybody can change (OR CAN THEY!?!)

Hey I love this album!  It's an old favorite.  It goes really well with weed.  So if you're not digging it, you now know what you need.   

So awesome!  Goosebumps indeed!  Brain looks terrific, has a tiger, and sings the last line in the sweetest, highest register I've heard him sing in in forever!  Brian is the only person who gets to sing TWO lines in this!  I wholeheartedly approve.

Just stumbled across this, figured I'd share!  Been listening to Gilbert Gottfried's new podcast (pretty good, if you don't hate Gilbert Gottfried) and his guest was Billy West, voice actor extraordinaire, best known as Stimpy from Ren and Stimpy and lots of characters from Futurama.  Anyways, he talks about meeting Brian and playing with him, and then does a pretty funny impression.  Gottfried then talks about the Problem Child music video (which he was in, because he was in the Problem Child movie), and tells a Mike Love story, but unless it happened during the brief period of time when Mike was smoking weed, AND hanging out with Miles Davis, I think Gilbert might be getting confused.  Starts at about 34 minutes in....

I'm gonna start another weird mix cd thread about this someday, but lemme just say, "At My Window" is the centerpiece of my Beach Boys VS Ween MIX CD!!!!  (any WEEN fans out there?)

Ok, lets get back on topic!  I have a very very important question that I don't think has been addressed yet.  Perhaps the most important question of all!!!!!

How is Mike's baldness in the movie?  Is he realistically bald-ish?  Do they shave Jake Abel's hairline back a few inches??  I MUST KNOW!!!!

Mr. del, why you always try to diminish/ridicule Al? Don't you like him? Believe it or not, he's been the best singer of the BBs for 2 decades (although I'd add more years).

Aw, I'm really not!    I truly ADORE Al!  And I concur that he's been the best singer for a long while.  I like to call what I do to Al "lovingly teasing".  Don't we do it to all the boys on some level?  One could say that drawing Brian eating a steak is some sort of put-down, right?  But that's also just a loving tease. 

I truly mean no offense to Al, he just seemed the most likely one to get seasick, no?       That's the real reason he skipped out on the Summer Days (and Summer Nights) photo shoot after all!

Unfortunately, some songs are just not in "finished" quality, so I don't think they would fit in super well.  Like, It's Not Easy Being Me really is a perfect analog for IJWMFTT, but I can't find any version that sounds really great.  Also, Brain is doing his kinda-crazy voice for some of it 

Who is Ronald Reagan, Brian?  Hehe, well, Bruce kinda turned into a Kennedy, so it's appropriate.   

Roger, I had a feeling the drawing would be way more liked than this concept.   

Mr. Cohen, thanks for the playlist, I'll put it together and see how it plays!  But I'm purposely avoiding pulling songs from That Lucky Old Sun because...  oh, I dunno, cuz I feel like I'm pulling some gems from unlikely places, but I think TLOS is a masterpiece from beginning to end, there's no need to highlight songs from it, I might as well just hand over the full CD to my friend and say LISTEN TO ALL OF IT IT'S GREAT!

Ok, I wasn't really gonna name this thing Pet Sounds 2, that was just to get people to look at this thread... which totally didn't work!  Anyways, I've been listening to this mix the last couple weeks, and I gotta say, it holds together very well!  This is my final track listing... I think....

Good name for a topic, huh?  It may be a little misleading…

So I have a friend who adores the BBs, but really only knows the old stuff.  Nothing past the 90s, really.  I know, old story.  So I’m trying to make the best damn mix of post 90s BBs evah!   I know, old story.  And I’m doing my best to base it off of Pet Sounds… that is… a melancholy song where a melancholy song goes, a peppy song where a peppy song goes, 13 tracks, 2 instrumentals, and a song about being on a boat right in the middle.  At first I was gonna try matching, say,  a Carl lead with another Carl lead, etc, but that proved impossible.  I’m also trying to pick songs that are at least a little bit artistically ambitious, and whenever goshdarn possible, a song that has that Pet Sounds feel, rare as those might be (like, say, You’re Still a Mystery)

Rules:  It's gotta be stuff post 90s.  I know, this being the BBs a lot of their "new" stuff had their genesis way back when, but still, if it was at least party recorded post 90s, and released post 90s, then it's ok. 

Rule 2: a little cheating is allowed, since there aren’t THAT MANY straight up Beach Boys songs from the 90s onward.  So I’m using one song from Summer in Paradise, if only to give Mike a presence in this mix.  I’m using Don’t Fight The Sea, which is technically a Beach Boys release,  and technically pretty recent.  I’m using Waves of Love, which isn’t a BBs song, but close enough.  I’m even borrowing Brian and Andy Paley’s In My Moondreams, because it’s a good enough analog for Pet Sounds (the song).  I know what you’re thinking, I’m separating Pacific Coast Highway from Summer’s Gone?!  And I’m putting In My Moondreams in between?!  You know, it kinda works.  A little levity before the final sad song.

So Al is very well represented here, as is Brian.  Carl also pops up a bunch.  Mike, not so much, but that’s his own damn fault    Whatcha guys think?  Comments, opinions, angry words?  What would YOUR “Pet Sounds 2” mix be?  Am I forgetting any great, overlooked post-90s gems?  I’m still missing a song.  Suggestions?

6.   Think About The Days // Let’s go away for a while – contemplative, slow, instrumental.  Well, Think About the Days isn’t instrumental, but it is wordless, so…  Best match I could

7.   Don’t Fight the Sea // Sloop John B. – big Al involvement, and everyone is on a boat and unhappy.  Perfect match! 

8.   Soul Searchin // God Only Knows – a big beautiful Carl song.  Decent match. 

9.   Shelter // I Know There’s An Answer -  these feel ever so slightly similar to me.

10.   From There to Back Again //  Here Today – I guess this totally doesn't match, but by now I’m committed to ending with the three “life suite” songs.  Altho I suppose I could combine From Here to Back Again with Pacific Coast, as they flow into each other, and add another song here?

11.   Pacific Coast Highway // I Just wasn’t Made For These Times – Brian being  sad, Brian being sad, decent match.

12.   In My Moondreams // Pet Sounds -  fun bouncy Hawaiin-ish instrumental, good peppy song before the sad ending.

13.   Summer’s Gone // Caroline No – perfect match, no need to say more.
