Even if "The Twist" had been Chubby Checker's only hit, that isn't reason enough to exclude him - after all, they inducted Percy "When A Man Loves a Woman" Sledge. I'm not a great fan of Chubby, but it does seem strange that he is not in the HOF. Heck, I'd put the Kingsmen in for "Louie Louie", too. Singles vs. albums? I never listened to Three Dog Night or Doobies albums very much, but their singles always sounded good on the radio, and I don't think there's anything wrong with having hit singles. It's only in recent years that I've gone back and discovered the albums of The Guess Who, but if they ever do get into the HOF, it's going to be for "No Time", "These Eyes", "Undun", "Hand Me Down World", not the "American Woman" album, or "Wheatfield Soul", or "Road Food".

Hypothetically (obviously) but if Dennis and Carl were alive where would they be? Would the beach boys be a full group? Would they be without Brian? Would Brian, Dennis and Carl be a trio?
I would've liked to have seen this happen Yes. Assuming a cleaned up Dennis would recover his voice, this could be very nice.

"Masterpiece" was the album that was supposed to followup SIP - where the title track on SIP delved into ecological concerns, etc, " Masterpiece" was supposed to explore those ideas in more depth. I'm sure Mike thought SIP would sail straight to #1 all over the world - "well, if one Kokomo can sell millions, then 12 Kokomo's has gotta be even better!" Cause apparently that's what Mike learned from his cousin - take a great idea and beat it to death.

I had a bias against SIP from the day I first saw it in the music store. I knew Brian was estranged from the band, so wasn't expecting him to be a part of it, but as my eyes scanned the tiles/writing credits on the back of the longbox, I did not see one song credited to C. Wilson or A. Jardine, and that fact alone made me hate the album. Didn't buy it until several years later when I found the cassette for a dollar in some used book store. Time has mellowed my feelings about SIP, but it's still the weakest studio album they did BY FAR. Mike and Terry take the Kokomo formula and beat it to death for 12 songs. There's not a "Somewhere Near Japan" or "Where I Belong" to redeem this turkey, although roughly half the songs I find tolerable. Anytime Carl sings, it lifts the quality of the album, but it's really a Mike Love solo album with the other guys' voices on it.

I'm still of the opinion that artists who have already been inducted into the R'n'HoF as part of an act (e.g. Beach Boys, Beatles, Yardbirds) shouldn't be reinducted as solo artists until AFTER the huge backlog of acts that aren't in the HoF have been inducted first, for fairness' sake.
Yes, that means that acts like Chicago and Jethro Tull should have gone in long ago -- and Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Eric Clapton's solo inductions should have been delayed. All imo, of course.
I agree, but the HOF is a joke now anyway. I don't lose any sleep over my favs, Paul Revere and the Raiders not getting in.

Meh. It's too late. Too late in the day to keep posting or too late to change Mike? The latter thing is correct, I think. I was much MUCH more excited when I heard Getcha Back on the radio back in 85. With the crashing drums and soaring falsetto.. now THAT got me going. I really thought the Boys were back. How did Getcha Back only go to 20 something and Kokomo to number one? I'll never understand. Because Kokomo was in a big movie and Getcha Back wasn't? I like Getcha Back much more, even though it is musically less sophisticated and Mike's vocal has a creepier nasality than on Kokomo. First time I heard Getcha Back on the radio was on a Sunday morning oldies show where new songs were NEVER played, but the DJ made an exception for this one, and yes, it felt like the Boys were back in a big way. I expected that song to go top 10.

It's HIGH time Brian was recognized for his decades of work in the studio...for turning Pet Sounds from an excellent solo effort into a senasational group album, for BWPS...and for Smile itself. It's time that he was recognized for his skills as a composer, a magician with vocal arrangements, for his 50-some-odd-year body of work...and for his influence. His solo career isn't good enough...MY ARSE!!! Sure, let's induct Brian for his solo career...and Dennis, and Carl, and heck, let's just induct all the guys individually! Especially Bruce (you think I'm kidding...no serious...he had a great career pre-BB's).

I have to strongly disagree; I was a DJ in Adult Contemporary radio in the summer of 1992. We gave Hot Fun in the Summertime considerable airplay and it peaked at 17 on the ACR Billboard chart. It was, by far, the most commercial track on SIP and a damned fine choice as a single. Island Fever and Lahaina Aloha were great songs, but in the vein of Still Cruisin' also a great track but, sadly, a failure on the charts (peaking at 93 on the Hot 100). Still Surfin' might have been a hit in 1976. Slow Summer Dancin' wouldn't have had a chance. As for Summer in Paradise, good song but they never quite got the arrangement right on that one until the 1993 live version and by then it was too late.
If you're going to go by the AC chart, though, Still Cruisin' was a big hit there, peaked at #5 or something.

It still bugs me to this day that the guys could get a #1 record in 1988, and have no clue how to follow it up! They should have had another single out just as "Kokomo" fell off the chart. By the time "Still Cruisin" came out the next summer, a lot of the momentum had gone. I was really hoping that having a hit record would inspire them to do something really creative, a new album, not just another compilation.
This is all water under the bridge by this point of course but I wish they would've followed it up with an album comprising the best of BW88, Kokomo, maybe one or two Al or Carl compositions... I think this might've turned out really great. I was foolish enough back then to think the guys would be motivated to come up with an all new album of the same quality of BW88 or Holland...or even LA. I was so young and naïve...but I learned real fast after Still Cruisin' came out.

I know Ringo's not being inducted as a solo artists, but if he was then he has no place being in the RRHOF when Brian Wilson is not
Brian hasn't had a very successful solo career. Only the first album did much on the charts, and even that sold far less than hoped for. As a concert act, he's mostly been doing the songs he made popular with the Beach Boys, and I can't say that his solo work has had any great influence on other artists. Ringo had a string of hit singles in the 70's, several successful albums, and played on many other artists' records, too.

I know I'm kinda late to this (only listened to it about a week ago), but just wanted to say what a great song I think this is for him to go out on. Here's the video on YouTube, BTW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8TsAh-zYFIGreat song indeed (and voice!), but why not go out on sth. more positive? I don't get why old-timers have to finish their career like that. It's only worse, because they would reminisce sad things of the past. If they retire doesn't mean the life is over, it's not death. They still can perform on stage their oldies, plan small gigs for mini-audience etc. The video is beautiful, on the other hand. Glen's lucky to have such a loving family. It would be fake to have Glen go out on a happy note, he's got Alzheimer's. I guess you don't know how terrible that is until you see your own family members affected by it. My grandma had it, she didn't know who I was the last couple years of her life.

I had been a fan for about 8 years at that point, and always listened to hear their new songs on the radio, so I was thrilled - but surprised - when it went to #1. This song just kind of snuck out, in fact I bought the 45 probably the week it was released, then nothing seemed to happen for the first month or so, all the attention was on Brian and his solo album. Then "Kokomo" slowly started climbing the charts. I wasn't surprised that Brian wasn't on it, he was kind of estranged from the band at that point. I was surprised that Brian's album didn't do better.

Add Some and Lonely Summer: It's obvious that you both share my affinity and respect for the late Carl Wilson. In spite of my best efforts to feel otherwise, I still can't watch/listen to any present-day grouping of the Beach Boys without wishing Carl was there to make it all sound right.
I have to agree. As great as the C50 Tour was, Carl was missed terribly. Not quite the same without him in the blend. I do like TWGMTR, but yes, I do feel something missing, a presence, a voice. I could've seen the present day Beach Boys this summer, and several people told me I should, but I passed.

The kid next door had this album - well actually, his sister did. But anyway, we listened to it, liked it at 10 years old, nothing wrong with the music, but song selection is totally random and definitely not the right album to have on the market after Pet Sounds.
