A short DVD, or one audio CD's worth then?
Maybe better as extras to a BBC documentary such as the Pet Sounds one presented by Mark Lamarr (sp?) a few recent years back?

Old Grey Whistle Test '72 is "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone", right?

We ought to be able to figure out what's there...Andrew? Somebody? And Brian made at least one of those trips, right?
I've already got outstanding BBC collections from the Who, the Kinks, the Zombies, the Yardbirds, David Bowie, the Beatles (of course), and others, I'm sure...I think there's a Hendrix one I don't have yet, and maybe Cream, and Led Zeppelin. So what's new about this deal? What further Bowie stuff, for example, could they be sitting on? The liners to the existing one- which is fantastic, by the way- go into detail about what exists, or was known as of a few years ago. Is there mroe, suddenly? That'd be great, but we need this story fleshed out.
Of course we know that the BBC chose to meticulously preserve all of these performances EXCEPT the Beatles- never have gotten that one.
I could sure use a Genesis at the BBC disc, about 1970-77, if such material exists. Other pipe dreams: Harry Nilsson, the Bobby Fuller Four (don't even think they went there), Jackie DeShannon, the Velvet Underground, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, Dusty Springfield...and how about the Rolling Stones, finally?
I wish the King Biscuit Flower Hour archives would get a little more active, too.

It's awesome! It was released under the name "Radio One" about 10-15 years ago, and has some of my favorite Hendrix recordings ever (including a cool version of "Day Tripper").

The BBC brought out an amazing CD and DVD of Dusty's shows for them last year.

Thanks, Luther- that'll light a fire under my over-sized butt to go on and grab that one. Been pleasantly filling in gaps lately in my collection, from all genres and eras. Just popped out a disc from the Etta James box set and put in Zappa's (Mothers') first album.

Wow- great news- how did I miss that??? Thanks! Guess my next Amazon order, after Dennis' new set and the Genesis '76-'83 box arrive, is shaping up.

I concur 100%. And for some related 60's LA pop music trivia regarding Freak Out!, grab your LP and open that gatefold. You may notice a little picture of PF Sloan playing the timpanis at a Freak Out session - never noticed that 'till I heard it from Phil....pretty cool, hey?
RE: BBC, yes the Hendrix BBC sessions disc is great. I'd like to see a remastered version of Harry Nilsson's BBC TV special, I've seen it all and its so fantastic. If more people saw it, there would be a lot more Harry Nilsson fans in the world!

Apologies for dragging this thread off topic- I'm sure it''ll be back on the tracks soon. But can't help responding to these comments.
As many times as I've heard it,
Freak Out
is always a much more fun listen than I expect or remember (I think of it as more intense than it actually is). The line that fractured me a while ago was, I think, "...had my hair processed..."
Phil Sloan is a huge hero of mine. Got a big kick out of seeing a guy I was almost sure was him- looked just like him- in traffic on Sunset Boulevard in about 1991. I've spent years seeking out his vintage stuff, and it's never let me down. Everybody here should have this:
http://www.amazon.com/Child-Our-Times-Trousdale-1965-1967/dp/B00004WINM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1213237183&sr=8-2
(I notice an old review of mine is still there).
Is there any hope for that Nilsson show to come out? Oddly enough, I was reading about it on Wikipedia within the last week. It should have been issued together with the Leaf film. How did you see it?

The only video item from this list still in the BBC archive is the OGWT performance of "You Need A Mess Of Help". There are also a couple of good OGWT interviews in the archive, one with Carl from 1974, and one with Brian from 1976 (some sequences of the latter were used in "An American Band").
And there was also, of course, the multi-part "Beach Boys Story" BBC radio series from 1974.

Beside the appearances, Top Of The Pops showed a couple of promo films in 1966:
March 10: "Barbara Ann" - filmed at Brian's house (not the "Sloop John B" pool clip)
April 28: TOTP dancers dance to "Sloop John B"
May 12: "Sloop John B" - Pool clip
June 16: "Sloop John B" - Pool clip
August 4: "God Only Knows" - Pet Sounds Promo Film recut
September 1: "God Only Knows" - Pet Sounds Promo Film recut
November 10: "Good Vibrations" - Peter Whitehead footage
November 17: "Good Vibrations" - more Peter Whitehead footage
November 24: "Good Vibrations" - Fire Station Clip
