A Note On Ties: Ties were broken by the total amount of highly supportive votes (votes in the good, great and classic categories). So, for example "Funky Pretty" had 47 people support it in such a manner, compared to 42 for "Still I Dream Of It". If still tied, I went by the number of votes in the "Classic" category (the highest rating in our survey). If still tied after that, I went by the number of votes in both the "Classic" and "Great" categories. Ties weren't further broken after that, and the one time we had a tie like that (as you'll see below), all three tracks had their votes go exactly the same way in all five categories, hence why the ties couldn't be broken further.

Not sure how I missed Warmth Of The Sun....and I love Funky Pretty. I guess we could go and do a survey with like every song in the catalog, but I just have to wonder how many people would be discouraged from actually finishing the damn thing.

I guess running from the early stuff through to Love You wouldn't be a bad idea. We could totally skip the early instrumentals and most of the covers.

I didn't include Kokomo because I know there's no way it would crack the Top 100, but I guess there's not to many songs post-Love You that would anyway.

I'll sleep on it, but I guess it might make more sense just to have a lengthy survey that eveyrone can just dive into.

If you want everyone's opinions, I think you should include every song and not just the ones you personally like. I think there are a few post Love You songs that definately deserve to be in a Beach Boys top 100, like Good Timin', Baby Blue, Somewhere Near Japan, It's A Beautiful Day, and maybe even Kokomo.

Kokamo would definately be in the top 100 if you asked a lot of people. Not saying it would be in mine, but surely to the masses.

As a fan, I wouldn't have Kokomo in the top hundred. A casual fan might, but there's so much genuinely good stuff ahead of it. I mean, all of Pet Sounds, most of Today, Sunflower, Surf's Up, all of Friends, most of Love You, most of 20/20, all of Wild Honey, most of Summer Days..., SMiLE, most of Smiley, the bulk of the tracks on most of the pre-Today albums, a fair bit of CATP, half of LA; hell there are tracks on MIU and 15 BO and at least Santa Ana Winds from KTSA that I'd have ahead of Kokomo.

Kokomo was their biggest hit and to completely disregard it on a top 100 list isn't fair and a tad snobbish. In my opinion there is nothing on MIU or KTSA that is better or catchier than Kokomo except for Goin' On. Songs do not get to the top of the charts for no reason. It had to have hit a chord with a vast majority who heard it on the radio. Just because Brian had nothing to do with it doesn't mean that it has no worth. And we get on Mike for revisionist history. ;)

Greatest songs is subjective but I wouldn't blame anyone for not thinking Kokomo is a great song despite its chart success. Chart success doesn't make something great - but, then again, what does?

Chart success doesn't make something great, but it does mean that for a majority of people at a given time, they thought it was good. Go to a Beach Boys concert and people still want to hear it. I've been a fan for 47 years or so, and it would make my Top 100.

Title is 100 Greatest Beach Boys Songs.  Kokomo isn't one of them.  I'm being realistic not snobbish. There's plenty of other stuff that wouldn't feature in my top 100, not just Kokomo.

It may not make a lot of people's top 100, but it definatly should be in the survey! Besides, how can you have just 100 songs in a survey to ask people for their top 100 from? Not fair.

I think we did this some other way - Someone started with a simple arbitrary list of Beach Boys songs, and other posters either added songs to the list, or vetoed them. I'll see if I can find it in the archives...

I wasn't t speaking to your list, but to the original poster's list for the "survey". If it is an objective list to chose from, then it should be on there, is all. Your list on the other hand should have your top 100 songs and if you don't want Kokomo on there, that is as it should be. The whole point is, is that objective lists need to be, well, objective.

I don't listen to it very often, but when I do it is usually all the way through. The only two that are really hard to sit through are Summer Of Love and Under The Boardwalk. At least Carl is the saving grace on the latter song.

I can't see how a list in which people choose what they think belongs in a Top 100 could ever objective. Not that I object to list-making but they can't produce objective results.

Well, I may have misunderstood the first post, but it looked like a starting list of songs, not the OPs personal list. So, say you list every song recorded then out that objective list you then pick your top 100 subjective list.

When the OPs name is KokoNo, then it's is easy to surmise that Kokomo was left off the list subjectively.

I know -- it was indeed the OP who stressed the objectivity of the list. But that seems pretty impossible to me. I've been a fan for 50 years. I never want to hear it again, live or on the radio. The song was a complete embarrassment to the group. Pure Roquefort to cheese up their reputation even further. Thank the stars that Brian didn't take part on that travesty.

Here's what I'm thinking.......

- Every album track excluding  covers. Covers will only be included if they were a single that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 or UK Top 40. As we're making a list of greatest Beach Boys songs, including tracks like "Barbara Ann" or "I Can Hear Music" seems to make sense, but wasting people's time with voting on a cover of "Louie Louie" or whatever doesn't serve much of a purpose. A lot of the non-single covers are pretty bland to be honest, and therefore, we don't want people basically voting on the quality of the song itself rather than the Beach Boys' version. I mean, it would be hard to give any cover of, say, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" a 1 out of 5 if we're voting based on the quality of a track.

- Christmas songs not included. I just can't see any reaching the Top 100.

- Nothing from Summer In Paradise. The album is universally loathed and not even in print, so a good deal here probably haven't even heard it. Never really seen anybody supporting tracks from that LP so I just can't see any making our Top 100.

- We will be ignoring non-album tracks that weren't hit singles. The main reason being that few if any would make the list, but also because it would ruin the poll since many haven't heard a lot of these tracks or don't listen to them regularly. Granted, you could have a separate poll with the rarer tracks, but that defeats the purpose of the survey since only the hardcore fanatics would vote in such a poll, giving us skewed results from a smaller group that is either harsher or easier on those songs than the rest of the band's fan base would be.



I think this will be fair enough and will leave a damn fine amount of songs to choose from.

Well, do people really want everything? If so, I guess we could do one big poll and have an opt-out option which will be "I haven't heard this song/don't remember it"......I guess we could go ahead and do that.

My polling system won't ask for numbers, but rather how you feel about the song. Whether it's awful, a classic, etc. It will make going through such a lengthy poll a lot easier and you won't need to wrack your brain too much.

This is a very daunting task that could be approached so many ways.  Cabinessence.net (now surfermoon.com) has a track archive where you can rate the individual tracks that were released before 2000, I think.

Crazy seeing the perfect scores dwindle as more people participate in the poll. I'm amazed at how many have already participated, so we should get a very nice tally hopefully. But yeah, some interesting song choices that currently have had all their votes go to the "Classic" category. Not necessarily some of the first tracks that you would think of...

Just thought I'd post in this topic to vent about something.....I can NOT stand forums where people needlessly bump their own threads back to the top so that others will participate in the discussion and/or poll. There is nothing more appalling than that and I'm glad to say that I haven't witnessed anything like that happening on this forum.

But I'll be the first to let you all know if anything like that does end up occurring. I'll definitely keep my eyes open.

I think it's stupid that "Here Comes the Night" and "Here Comes the Night (Disco)" are listed as separate versions when no other song is, except, arguably "With Me Tonight" and "You're With Me Tonight" which are also pretty much the same song. also, if you're going to The Monkey's Uncle then you have to also include Karen. and why put Our Prayer and Gee as one track?

Just gonna take this opportunity to say I really don't like the verse of "Good Vibrations", especially the little riffy thing right before the chorus. The chorus is frigging awesome, though, as is the organ bridge. I've been waiting for the right time to say it because it's totally blasphemous and will make everyone hate me, and this is semi-relevant.

I'll also say the theremin (or whatever it actually is) being bone dry and slightly out of tune in the original mix is brilliant, intentional or not. Mixes that drench it in reverb (because it was the 60s. Come on guys, 60s = lots and lots of reverb) or the BWPS being all "corrected" pitch-wise just grinds my gears all to hell.


They're arguably extremely different, most notably one being laughably bad (although indeed laughably bad - it at least has some kind of entertainment value) and is like 20 Gosh Darn minutes long, where as one is over in like one minute and is pretty awesome. This is the sole example in the Beach Boys catalog where I think one "song" deserves two separate entries.

Yeah, my reasoning was the same as runnersdialzero. The rest of the tracks are musically the same as one another for the most part, just with minor changes. The two versions of Here Comes The Night have little in common other than the lyrics.

The "With Me Tonight" stuff is kind of an oversight....sort of.

I figured "Our Prayer" and "Gee" were kind of insignificant on their own and they really do kind of seem connected at the hip when listening to Smile and work as the introduction to the first major number. Mostly, it's a given that they would perform better in this poll if they were combined so I did as such.

... and chords, and the melody. Which is understandable because they are exactly the same song.

I think that 'Our Prayer' is the single best demonstration of how magical The Beach Boys were vocally, and simply one of the beautiful pieces of music the group ever made. I never cared a whole lot for the 'Gee' fragment, so I definately prefer 'Our Prayer' on its own.

Final thread bump as we go into the last weekend of voting. We've had over 40 respondents, and from the looks of the results, should be mostly tie-free when compiling the Top 100 thanks to the scoring system I intend on using.

Surely there can only be one fair scoring system, i.e. total votes. Anything else will be unfairly skewed.

There's no curve or anything weird. Just a points system. It will do its job for what we're trying to accomplish which is to find the 100 most loved Beach Boys songs and is weighted towards that goal.

obviously we should not hold this poll in any way to be representative of anything.

I didn't look through the whole thread, but How She Boogalooed It is listed twice.

I think you'll be surprised at how it turns out and also find the results to be satisfactory. There's nothing weird about the way I'm adding things up as obviously someone saying a song is a classic deserves more points than someone saying a song is decent.  Just taking a cursory glance at the songs getting the most great/classic votes, it's definitely an interesting mix although mostly the ones you would expect from hardcore fans. What's more interesting is how well some songs in particular have done and I imagine there will be some interesting surprises near the top of the list.


In the future, it would be fun to do an annual list including only the Top 150 or so scorers from this version. Nothing below that would be likely to break the Top 100, anyway, so having less options would probably give us more voters since I imagine clicking that poll had to have scared some people away. That said, we have had almost 50 respondents which says a lot given that this a band that passed its peak about 40 years ago and that the survey takes quite some time to complete. I'm pretty happy with the turnout.

What's a kokono?  And what a weird avatar.

A "kokono" is the song "Kokomo," with "no" replacing the syllable "mo," which makes more sense if you use the correct capitalization as in the username, i.e. KokoNO.

The avatar is the cover of the Kokomo single, with a "prohibited" type symbol (a red circle with a diagonal line through it) superimposed on the cover.

Taken in concert, I believe that the above 2 pieces of information are meant to imply that the user is suggesting that he/she has a certain degree of disdain for the song Kokomo. The tongue-in-cheek aspect of the statement (as demonstrated, perhaps subtly, by the emphasis of the "NO" in "KokoNO," along with the (assumed to be done on purpose) sloppily drawn "prohibited" sign on the Kokomo cover) implies that the user's dislike of the song is not very substantial, and the comment is meant more as a joke than a suggestion of literally banning the song in any meaningful and/or legal way.

I hope this response adequately addresses your question(s) and concern(s), implied or otherwise.

Thanks to everyone that participated. We had 59 respondents. I plan on tallying everything up by tomorrow, followed by sorting everything. The songs that didn't make the Top 100 will be revealed all at once and then we'll probably do a ten day countdown for the list. Basically, you should know which 100 songs made the list by Thursday and the bottom ten (#100-91) by Friday.

Thanks for doing this!  I eagerly await the results.  Part of me was hoping that you'd reveal it all at once, but the countdown thing is cool (I love countdowns) and the suspense will make it more fun!  :)  Would you be willing to reveal #101-365 (or whatever the high number was) in order?  Or is that too much work?

PS Did the 59 respondents all have different IP addresses?

Well, SurveyMonkey won't let people use the same IP addresses as you can only complete the survey once. That said, you can sometimes find cheaters that are clearly using similar IPs.....however, given the length of the survey, it would be very hard to find any obvious patterns and I just really doubt anyone would want to fill out something like this more than once.

I will rank the other songs by their scores....I won't number them though except for, maybe, #101-150.

I have decided against revealing the songs that didn't make the Top 100 before we begin the countdown. I'd rather have everyone be surprised (although we all know that, say, "Crocodile Rock" won't make the list). I mean, if I were told what was on the Top 100 in advance, I probably wouldn't care much about how they're ranked.

On the plus side, it will also be less work in the near future to get into the Top 100 countdown, so that means earlier results for everyone. Probably tomorrow night at the latest.

Funny I like Judy. I think I gave it at least a three.

A note on ties (since we had a few). They were broken by the total amount of highly supportive votes (votes in the good, great and classic categories). So, for example "Funky Pretty" had 47 people support it in such a manner, compared to 42 for "Still I Dream Of It"

Two songs further in the list still ended up tied after one tiebreaker, so the next tiebreaker ended up being the amount of votes in the "classic" slot.

I hope the top 10 isn't like Good Vibrations, I Get Around, California Girls, Surfer Girl, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, etc. But I'm sure it will be.

Um, so tell me, what Beach Boys songs are better than "God Only Knows" or "Good Vibrations"?

I think on the whole that this list gives such high praise to Pet Sounds (every song from that album is on this list, perhaps no big surprise since the outtake, 'Hang On To Your Ego', cracked the Top 100...) and Smile along with their later career that it definitely shows a much different side than what the casual audience seems to think.

Now, if we get to the top ten and "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Barbara Ann" appear there....then I'll be inclined to agree with you. We'll just have to wait and see.

Having "I went to sleep" at 83 is a joke. That is one of Brian's best songs.

Add Some Music To Your Day isn't even in the top 5 best tracks on Sunflower, never mind one of their 100 greatest. (Again, individual taste etc. But I'm right.)

Well, five songs from Sunflower DID finish ahead of it on our list. Also, given the unlikelihood of the later albums to even get a single track in our Top 100 (and the early albums to get too many either), most of the middle period albums should be getting what we're seeing which is around a half dozen tracks from each (and more from the titans like Smile and Pet Sounds).

Thanks for sharing the top 200!  I was wondering about "At My Window"...just barely made it!  If I'm not mistaken, everything from Sunflower made the top 200, and aside from bonus track "Trombone Dixie", everything from Pet Sounds made top 100.

Most songs made it where I thought they would...no major surprises, although I expected "409", "At My Window" and especially "Your Summer Dream" to make it higher!  Also I kind of expected "Still Cruisin" to be in the lower reaches of the top 200, but alas, no.  Also, kind of surprised at the somewhat high ranking of "Surfer Moon"...I've never understood the appeal of that song, or why it was included on the 1993 boxed set.

I've developed a love for At My Window recently, it has a very alternative sound and it's my favourite Bruce lead vocal (he doesn't oversing) so I was surprised to see it so low too.

Notably "I Do" wasn't on the Wiki page that attempts to list all of the band's songs, so it was an oversight and not included in the poll (although I'm sure there's some others). I checked the other day and it had been added to the list. Figures.  ::)

Thanks for posting the full results!  Looks like "Lady Liberty" had the lowest score...bummer about "I Do" being missing from the list, but oh well.  Two more  that were missing (but officially released) were "Happy Birthday America" and "Runaway".

Also, I'm not sure if I'm just missing where "A Time To Live In Dreams" placed...can't see it (sorry in a rush to leave the house!)

Funny that "Heroes & Villains" placed 12th...that was its Billboard Chart peak as well.

Thanks for conducting this survey and posting the results, KoKoNo, but PLEASE change your graphic for Forever!  Replace it with the Sunflower cover or a pic of Dennis.  I actually have nothing against the Stamos recording of Forever, and appreciate the fact that he has helped keep the song in the public's consciousness by singing it in concert, but it's Dennis' version on Sunflower that is the classic and made it all the way up to number 9.  Plus, I didn't even notice your little laughing emoticon at first.

Tree would have been higher up on my list.  Beautiful melody.  Songs like Meant for you, and your dream comes true and your summer dream would be in my top 100.  i'm surprised forever is in the top 10, same with cabin essence and til i die.  girls on the beach...i can't even put that in my top 100.  it's so by the numbers.

Wow, are you saying we are just ordinary folk in here? There is a reason why the hits continue to be popular 40+ years down the line. I admit I'm no snob when it comes to the music, I love the hits, along with Brian's other catchy tunes.
