Title: The Beatles Survivor #2 Winner: ALL MY LOVING
Post by: pixletwin on September 21, 2016, 09:11:00 PM
Here we go. The Beatles sophomore album.

Quote
With the Beatles is the second studio album by the English rock group the Beatles. It was released on 22 November 1963, on Parlophone, and was recorded four months after the band's debut Please Please Me. The album features eight original compositions (seven by Lennon–McCartney and "Don't Bother Me", George Harrison's first recorded solo composition and his first released on a Beatles album) and six covers (mostly of Motown, rock and roll, and R&B hits). The cover photograph was taken by the fashion photographer Robert Freeman, and it has been mimicked by several music groups over the years.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on September 26th.

It Won't Be Long
All I've Got To Do
All My Loving
Don't Bother Me
Little Child
'Till There Was You
Please Mister Postman
Roll Over Beethoven
Hold Me Tight
You Really Got A Hold On Me
I Wanna Be Your Man
Devil In Her Heart
Not A Second Time
Money (That's What I Want)

Following on the heels of the success of their first album, the Beatles were anxious to not rock the boat so they kept the general formula that seemed to work so well on Please Please Me. Though they took more time to record it.

My first pick is an easy one. Sort of. I think Hold Me Tight is probably the weakest Lennon/McCartney song in the entire Beatles oeuvre. However, George Harrison's first attempt at song writing isn't exactly a shining moment... But which to vote off?

Ultimately, Hold Me Tight is fun. The hand claps give it energy and I kind of dig that galloping rhythm. Whereas Don't Bother Me is heavy. It has some interesting guitar work. But Harrison's vocal and overdubs are pretty messy.

I'll vote Don't Bother Me.

Had to think what to shoo away 1st - "All I've got to do" & "You really got a hold". 2 songs that would rather not exist. Dilemma.

"You really got a hold".

oh Range! I really dig 'got a hold'.  I would axe half of these songs.  Almost my least favourite
album by the group.
firstly, let's dump 'little child'.
lock it in.

I listened to this album very closely last night and figured out my bottom five...well, there's no question who the leader of the group was at this stage, John. Paul sings less than he had on Please Please Me while George sings more. I hadn't noticed that before. I was probably too busy listening to You Really Got A Hold On Me ;D Anyway, all of my bottom five feature Paul, George, or Ringo on lead vocal. Starting with...

Till There Was You

This is such a good album.  But "Little Child" stands out as the weakest track.

Lots of irrelevant tracks on here, but my least favorite is Little Child.

The album cover is stylish, black & white & everything. It is weak song, "Little child", I like it because it's joyful & short. "Till there was you" is Paul's best lead in the album. & it's beautiful, kind of. "Don't bother me" is boring.
Top 3 imo "Mr. Postman", "Money"*, "Devil in her heart".

*superior version by The Rolling Stones.

As much as I like this album, there are quite a few weak tracks to choose from.... Guess I'll go with I Wanna Be Your Man, a version which was totally blown away by the Stones version (ditto Money)

I'd never noticed how many of my least favorite Beatles songs are on this album. Probably because I don't listen to the early Beatles much and when I was young and did listen more to the early Beatles, I had the US albums.
I do really like a few songs here though.
I'm going to go with the growing consensus for worst: Little Child

pixletwin,  Guess not everybody is reading your intro quote box which clearly states the release date.  You fell for it too!  ouch!  Just any ol' 22 won't do. :p

I love this album, but as with many of us here - grew up with Capitol's Meet The Beatles!.  I didn't hear the British counterpart until 1970, although I had read the track listing in 1964.  To this day I have a problem with "Money" placed as the last track.  I also believe Meet The Beatles! is a much stronger set of songs than The Beatles Second Album.  Most people do not agree with that.  "Money" was given no important place on the second Capitol Beatles album.  And, as BE pointed out, George's numbers were tossed to the second American album.  John had strong numbers on both albums, 'cause, well, John was just the best of the bunch.

I tend to play those first two volumes of the American albums when I listen to the early songs, but I have the big box Apple/UMe released using the mix of non-American versions of some songs.  Of those that have that box, has anybody taken the time to play The Beatles Story?  I haven't.  Not even once, and it's one of the very few Beatles albums I do not own on original vinyl, don't have the Rock'n'Roll comp either.  Yeah, 1964 was the last time I heard "the story"-

One of the things I do love about the way with the beatles was put together is opening with "It Won't Be Long" and "All I've Got To Do" - two of Lennon's strongest early songs.  Again, given no special place by Capitol on Meet The Beatles!. Wasn't that just their way? ;)   "Don't Bother Me" was my favorite George song until 1968, when it was finally equaled by his white album offerings, though I love "The Inner Light" and all of his songs from Yellow Submarine.  I'm going to guess the George and Ringo songs from every era will be under the wheels of the Magical Mystery Tour bus quickly.  I hope you do Past Masters or the Hey Jude comp in this game, pixletwin.  That's where you will find my favorite George track, ever.

Okay. let me vote.  My least favorite track on this album is "Till There Was You"  -I'll color-code my selections from now on, so as to be easily seen when you are scanning back thru doing the count.

Good on ya.  Leave it to an Australian to correct us yanks!  I like your new avatar and user-name, too.

I also see a running argument developing...  "Money" -My favorite version is by The Beatles.

Hey Emily,  Yeah, when they released the big box of all the American albums they stuck that in there to be complete.  Has Hey Jude album, too.  The covers were done better than on the first two volumes as well, HELP! has a gate-fold cover.  Full of neat stuff, you get both of the Yesterday...and Today covers.  You can buy individual albums from this box.  Check it out.

Have a fun week-end, everybody.  -Will

I think the first few rounds of an album could allow for 2-3 songs being voted off at once. Just to get the least favorites out of the way and speed things up. Especially for the White Album and Past Masters. Beyond that I think it should remain one song per round. If people still want to speed it up beyond that, then simply shorten the window from 5-7 days per round to 3-4 days. Most of the active participants vote within 2-3 days. Those are just my unsolicited thoughts. Whatever, I'll always participate in these threads.

4 votes on various other songs couldn't stop the 5 vote juggernaight that was Devil In Her Heart. In her heart, no more. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

I will shorten the voting span to 2 days. So tally will be on the 25th.

It Won't Be Long
All I've Got To Do
All My Loving
Don't Bother Me
Please Mister Postman
Roll Over Beethoven
Hold Me Tight
Not A Second Time
Money (That's What I Want)

Following on the heels of the success of their first album, the Beatles were anxious to not rock the boat so they kept the general formula that seemed to work so well on Please Please Me. Though they took more time to record it.

Round#1 Little Child September 27
Round#2 I Wanna Be Your Man October 5
Round#3 'Till There Was You October 10
Round#4 You Really Got A Hold On Me October 17
Round#5 Devil In Her Heart October 22

My first pick is an easy one. Sort of. I think Hold Me Tight is probably the weakest Lennon/McCartney song in the entire Beatles oeuvre. However, George Harrison's first attempt at song writing isn't exactly a shining moment... But which to vote off?

Ultimately, Hold Me Tight is fun. The hand claps give it energy and I kind of dig that galloping rhythm. Whereas Don't Bother Me is heavy. It has some interesting guitar work. But Harrison's vocal and overdubs are pretty messy.

I'll  STILL vote Don't Bother Me.

"Roll Up, Roll Up, Roll Up for the Mystery...  We're going so fast I'm getting ahead of myself.

"Roll Over Beethoven" - This track always worked better as a live number.  I think it's on every Byrds boot I own (that's many).

I like The Beatles version.  Perfect for George's voice.  It Rocked for a while, soon it will be gone like junk mail.  Please Mister Postman, don't bother me with it.  We've got better in the wings.

all my loving and please mr postman are the best tunes on this record, if they go i'll be deeply depressed.

That was me when You Really Got A Hold On Me was voted off. Both the song itself and the Beatles version has always been an all-time favorite of mine and I had never noticed anything but praise for it. I was completely shocked to see it voted off so soon. Where else is there a John/George co-lead? Another reason I love it! The harmony is interesting too.

"Roll Over Beethoven" - This track always worked better as a live number.

Absolutely! My vote this round is purely based on the album version, but I agree, it was better live. They developed it after recording the album version and it really started to cook! Started to incorporate a soft/loud/soft/loud technique during the final verse (with a complimentary bass part by Paul) and harmonies during the final refrain. I've been listening to various released versions and they are all a little different. Sometimes there's harmony singing, sometimes there's not, and that's listening in chronological order. Interestingly, the DC show in Feb. 64 shows John joining in as well during the final refrain but I can't hear him, he's probably just doubling George's part.

I'd also like to add, if Roll Over Beethoven (the album version) is missing anything for me (and it is) its Beatle harmonies. I know covers kinda just filled out sets and albums, and it was more of a showcase for each guy to sing unaccompanied (George singing Roll Over Beethoven or John singing Dizzy Miss Lizzy) but hearing the same voice throughout each part of the song is not generally to my liking. I feel the same about the Beach Boys (or any other vocal group), it just seems lazy to me and it hardly ever benefits the song (IMO). I love when Beach Boy songs trade off leads every few lines, it completely changes and enhances the dynamic of the song. Anyway, back to Roll Over Beethoven, I always thought a low harmony by John during the bridge would have sounded cool. He could come in on the second line and bottom out on "move".

I feel the same way when it comes to All My Loving. Why is Paul harmonizing with himself in the third verse? I know, sure, they didn't have as much time to record in those days and Paul was ready to sing it, or whatever. I'd love to know if there's a story behind that decision. Anyway, George sings with Paul when they perform it live and it sounds great! I always miss it when I hear the album version. If it were a solo Paul album it wouldn't bother me at all because he nails it, but it's a Beatles album and George's voice is the secret ingredient of the Beatles sound!

After all that, my vote is for Roll Over Beethoven.

A few comments on Money now that it's gone: In comparison to the original by Barrett Strong, I like that the Beatles truncated the intro and break from 12 bars to 8. Also, the final refrain has always made the song for me. The way it 'kicks into overdrive' with Paul's punctuated eighth notes (does Ringo double him on bass drum?). My knowledge of music theory is very basic so if my wording is technically wrong, forgive me, I'm just trying to explain specific aspects of the song.  Same as Twist and Shout, I love the complete ending by the Beatles and John's impassioned "that's what I WANT". IMO it better serves the song than fading out. Also, the rawer (even duller) sound and lower key of the Beatles version seems to fit the theme of the song better IMO. But that is a minor point, just a thought. Lastly, if any aspect of the Beatles version were to exceed any others, to me, it would be the backing vocals by Paul and George.

P.S. I like John changing the words to "I wanna be free" and omitting Strong's interjection "and that baby is what I need" after "Always need greens" or "All I need greens" in the original verson. Atleast that's what I hear, but I'm not sure what Strong is saying. Interestingly, it seems John imitates that interjection in the Live at the BBC volume 2 version, although it may have just been a coincidence.

My vote is for Don't Bother Me.

If you want raw and exciting, check out the Stones version of Money. Makes the Beatles version seem very tame in comparison, particularly with the garage-y backing vocals by Brian & Bill.

This round my vote goes to All I've Got To Do.... Don't Bother Me is one of the better remaining songs IMO

I don't want to vote off the last McCartney song, though it is the weakest of the remaining tracks.  "Hold Me Tight" was by far his strongest track on the album.

I had hope "Don't Bother Me' would somehow make it to the finals.  Other than that, this polling went the way I see it.

Turn your head, and you won't see me as I vote for one of the classic Lennon tracks:  "Not A Second Time"

Round#11 All I've Got To Do November 9

Not a second time is a great song. I love it how John sings "You're giving me that same old lie. I'm wondering why." But,  it's the weakest of the remaining songs.

All My Loving is a great song. Great melody. Great rhythm guitar work. But it doesn't have that "aha!" moment which....

It Won't Be Long, has. I love the raw energy of this song. I love the "yeah"s. I love how it simmers to a smooth harmonized ending. No fade out. Perfect.

It Won't Be Long.

Vote your faves!!!

This record went pretty well for me and the voting.  My last vote for a Lennon track was just to keep a Paul song in the final.  "All My Loving" is not as good as "Not A Second Time" - Lennon was King of The Beatles.

My favorite song on with the beatles is:  "It Won't Be Long" - Real Power!  Rock and Roll at it's finest.

I vote All My Loving too.

Why? It's one of those very rare songs which give me the idea they have always existed somewhere, and they were just drawn out rather than composed. It's a song made of air and light. Another song giving me that idea is "Time to Get Alone".

Not my favorite song on the album, not even top 3, but of the songs remaining I must vote for it. It's a great song. I struggled choosing between All My Loving and It Won't Be Long for a long time. It's odd how my favorites on Please Please Me aligned very closely with all of you, yet we're way off on With The Beatles.

2. Money (That's What I Want)
3. Please Mister Postman
4. All I've Got To Do
5. All My Loving
6. It Won't Be Long
7. Not A Second Time
8. Devil In Her Heart
9. Little Child
10. Don't Bother Me
11. Hold Me Tight
12. Roll Over Beethoven
13. I Wanna Be Your Man
14. Til There Was You

90% of the time I use my iPod to listen to music. Sometimes I listen to albums straight through, but often I listen to songs and jump around based on what song I want to listen to most at that very moment. Typically, jumping back and forth between the Beatles and the Beach Boys. So, when trying to rank songs that I mostly enjoy equally, I think, 'well, what songs do I seek out the most?' I try to avoid thinking objectively about it, unless I'm absolutely stuck. It may be habit, but I'm always going back to those covers! Both the Beatles and Beach Boys had great taste and they both introduced me to so much great music! Also, I'm trying to approach this from a historical point of view (having been a fan for 15+ years) as opposed to what songs I happen to be digging at the moment. Because that literally changes moment to moment.

Btw, I listened to the Hard Day's Night album yesterday...I have two clear least favorites, after that I just about love every song equally. That's similar to how I feel about most of their albums (including this one).

OK. Successful uncrazying of things.

2B.E.: agree with your Top 3, except sub boring "You Really got a Hold" with maybe "Devil". "Please Mr. Postman" is great John lead, the best in this album. It's insane it's got the boot. I like "Not a Second Time" but assumed it's considered the lesser of Beatles tunes.

Hard Day's Night is going to be difficult to vote off anything.

As for It Won't Be Long, several years ago I started toying around with the chords on my (acoustic) guitar. Back in the early 90's I used to go to this bar in Seattle that had this brother-sister duet perform on weekend nights. He played acoustic guitar, and they both sang. One nifty arrangement they did was "She Loves You" which they basically turned into a slow ballad. It seemed to bring out things in the song you didn't notice in the Beatles' own version. Anyway, flash-forward about 20 years and, with that rendition in the back of my mind, I started doing the same thing with It Won't Be Long. On an acoustic guitar, some of the chord transitions in It Won't Be Long send shivers up my spine. But you can't really notice how nifty they are in the Beatles' loud, teeny-bopper oriented version. It's one of those songs you have to strip down and strip apart in order to find its inner beauty.

The chords for the bolded parts are what sends the shivers down my spine:

Every night when everybody has fun
Here am I sitting all on my own

And then the entire bridge does all kinds of nifty things. Don't know if anyone's ever turned this song into a ballad, but if they haven't, somebody should.

Great post, SMiLE-addict. Thanks. I had some time last night to heed your advice. I noticed that the chord change in the verse on "everybody" and "sitting" is a C (flat VI) while the song is in E major. After reviewing my Beatles Complete Scores book, I read Alan Pollack's notes. He referred to it as the 'Buddy Holly chord', as it very well may have been to John Lennon at the time. He also mentioned John used it in the bridge of I Call Your Name. Also, I found that dissonant A chord in the intro on "belong" to be interesting. That's something I never really paid close attention to before. I agree about the bridge, a lot going on. I like Paul's descending bass E-D#-D-C# and the backing vocals. Additionally, i just want to add how I've always loved John's vocal flourish during the final refrain followed by Paul leaping up on a subsequent 'yeah'. John's voice was incredible during that time.

I then looked at All Ive Got To Do a little bit more closely. I've always loved Paul's harmony which starts out parallel until he holds a note a bit longer before continuing. I always though that sounded cool. According to Pollack's notes Paul is singing in thirds before transitioning to parallel fourths. And again, I love John's vocal flourishes during the final bridge. It's these little details that keep me interested through the years.

Pixletwin, do you have a preference for the shorter UK version or longer US version?

And this is for any Beatles fan....My Beatles collection consists mostly of the UK releases (multiple times over). Are there any unique US versions that I must add to my collection ASAP? I Feel Fine and I'll Cry Instead, sure. Any others??? I remember researching the differences years ago, but I've forgotten most of what I learned.
