Really ?  From here: http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=702

"This two-CD “Smile” set is one of my greatest CD creations."

Your being a 'legger doesn't concern me, but the hypocrisy does.

This comment floored me... "As it turns out, Al Jardine started a hoax, which he has now retracted. “Smile” is not going to be released officially. The “Smile” that you get on Big O is the best “Smile” you’ll ever get." - By Philip Cohen on Feb 15, 2011

 LOL

Who's voice is it after the first chorus before mike starts talking how the song is an accolade?the one singing "that's why god made the radio".

Sounds like Bruce and Brian at that part. The "That's" at the start of that line definitely sounds like Bruce.

Thanks for the heads up!

1080p and I still have trouble picking up BB voices in the harmonies as opposed to Jeff's voice.
But I'm sure it must just be my ears.

Looking forward to the single!

I think I have watched/heard this now about 100 times , I certainly hear Al , Mike and certainly Bruce ( or is it Bruse ) on the tag at the end

Mike certainly comes through clearly near the end as he's singing in the midrange. I'm positive that cool part "Fallin' in love" is Bruce and it's AMAZING! I was commenting on a thread a few weeks back saying how young Bruce's voice still sounds (even his speaking voice) and that they'd do well to make use of that.

I think Bruce wrote this song with Mike Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDGXpfIoz8&feature=related

It's a really pretty tune and Bruce sounds fantastic on it. For my money Bruce and Terry were better than Jan and Dean  Grin

Correct - Mike supplied the lyric and also the bass vocals.

I'm a sucker for all that laid back dreamy sounding stuff. Everything on that track sounds so crisp aswell and the tone of that guitar is really sweet. Any info on who played what on the track Andrew?

This interview was done only three years ago and Brian seems just to be just as lucid as he was when he was young. I think Brian just isn't interested in giving interviews anymore and just uses the same stock phrases and stories to get through them.

Check out how many times Brian mentions Ding Dang in that interview!  LOL

Where does Christian Love rank for you guys?

I really like Christian, on some songs more than others. Check out the version of God Only Knows with him on lead if you haven't heard it, the timbre of his voice is quite similar to Carls. You can tell he's family and his voice would fit the blend perfectly but I hear he wasn't into being part of the 50th.

Foskett/Kirsch/Bennett - 100%

I don't rememner seeing Kirsch there.

That's because he wasn't there.

Here's an article about yesterday. Is that Carl's son on the last picture?

http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_20368076/beach-boys-and-dodgers-at-50-good-vibrations

Yeah Justyn was there with his mum apparently.

It actually looks like Carl came along for the occasion

They should have asked him up to sing with them, that'd be cool!

Foskett/Kirsch/Bennett - 100%

Brian/Al - 50%

Mike/Bruce - Are they singing?

have to say I wouldnt be able to recognise David Marks voice but he looks like he is belting out the anthem

There's no reason not to have Mike audible, his bass vocals would have sounded amazing rolling round that stadium just like they did at the Grammy's. I'm sure it's mainly Cowsill underneath Jeff's vocal when they break away from the unison singing in TSSB.

David hasn't got a really strong voice but it's quite distinctive when you hear him sing lead. He'd do well on a song like Love Surrounds Me...take the hint guys and play it on the tour!  Wink

That 2008 tour was really something special! The setlist from that tour will never be bettered I don't think.

Not to start this debate again, but I *really* don't too much care for Foskett's voice.

ahhh...see others beat me to it.
All you gentleman who don't care for Jeff Foskett should leave him alone..Brian likes him and maybe even needs him.Jeff at one time was just like us. A super-fan. He had the balls to go and knock on Brian's door. God bless him.I like his cd's too. Wall

Is there not a story though where Jeff actually knocked on Brian's actual door?  LOL I'm sure I read that somewhere, it was before he got the BB's gig in the 80's, mid 70's or something.

I think you will find that Mike knocked on Jeffs door , so actually I think you will find that Jeff owes rather a lot to Mike for his career

Possibly Craig , I'm now getting old ( over 30 odd ish ish ish  ) and its now knocking on to 2 am  Huh But my first knowledge of Jeff was in Mikes band ( Endless Summer Band ) to plug the LBWL Album in 1981

Yeah wasn't Randell involved with that too? Mike sure knew how to scope out new musicians! I must find that story about Jeff going to Brian's house, it was quite funny if I remember right. 2am...dear me I can't believe i've sat here til this time refreshing the page for these videos!  LOL

If this whole tour is just gonna be the Jeff Foskett show, I'm staying home.

It's not looking is it?  With the Grammy's a few months ago and now this...it's a bit worrysome how a tour or new album will sound.  I'm still putting it on the TV mix.  These people don't know how to mix the Beach Boys...they merely put the strongest voice of the group upfront in the mix and buried everyone else in the background.  I'm hoping the sound at the shows are more fair.

As much as I dislike these tv mixes I think the tour will sound much closer to what was heard in the room at the Grammy's. Jeff obviously has to handle those falsetto parts but it's not like Al and Bruce are shabby midrange singers, they could have been a lot more prominent in that mix. Also as the guys sounded so good at the Grammy's inside the hall it begs the question as to why they need to be covering up all their voices on the tv feeds anyway?

Whoa that's the first time i've seen him without the hat since that Beatles documentary from a few years back.

Just got home from work, recorded the pregame and National Anthem.  From what I can tell they interviewed Mike, spoke about the band and also about Kevin Love.  The entire performance of Surfer Girl was televised, as was the National Anthem.  I'm currently encoding and then uploading to YouTube.  Will post a link when it's complete!

Thanks that's much appreciated! Can't wait to see it!

The alternative is way better. Such a better production.

That's MUCH better! I can actually stand to listen to it now! Still not a brilliant song though.
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What \ on: April 10, 2012, 08:18:29 AM
before: they talk about the american politics, and after: they talk about a surf museum in Great Brittain.

& she only said: these were the Beach Boys, of course

Oh right thanks for that! Weird that they would play that instead of the original though! Probably just a mistake by somebody at the station I guess.
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: April 10, 2012, 07:47:46 AM
It's not uncommon - The single will probably just pop up on iTunes or something tomorrow, if it's to be, with the only fanfare being people noticing it - there's little point drumming up singles nowadays as they're not as important businesswise.

Only thing is, singles don't get released on a wednesday? Maybe he means the song will be put on youtube or soundcloud or something, with an actual release following.

That's what I took it to mean. I think he means the single will be released to radio stations, youtube and tv stations (for the promo video) then after a while we'll get the physical release. Only a few places have it available for pre-order so far so I don't think we'll be seeing a physical release tomorrow.
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What \ on: April 10, 2012, 07:45:03 AM
Ok let's break the silence

Yesterday, the ninth of april I heard an alt mix of Surfin' Safari on the Dutch radio 1.

listen here: http://nos.nl/radiouitzending/9579-met-het-oog-op-morgen-2300-uur.html

42:42 to 45:38 = almost 3 minutes long!

Alt mix means including overdubbed new instruments.
Now my question is: Has anybody heard this, is this a remix by an outsider, or is this an official part of a forthcoming 'commemorative release'?

I think that's definitely an outside job. None of those overdubs sound like real instruments, it's like a karaoke backing track. Horrible, just horrible. What do the presenters say just before they play the track?

what a creepy-looking guy.

Word, what the heck happened to him? Before my eyes were entirely focused on it I thought it was Brian.

Apparently he died in 95 aged 86 from injuries sustained in a car crash. Seemed like some guy! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_ahbez
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - A Postcard from California - official Video - HD on: April 04, 2012, 12:53:36 PM

Carl's vocal on "WoL" is... not very good: very much a placeholder - I'd go so far as to say, it shouldn't have been used.. And the rest of the song is not dissimilar to the title track, as regards the derivative nature. I can spot five riffs from different BB hits.

That said, I like "CD" very much - The Cros is as cool as ever, and Glen's vocal is just stellar.

I'm with you Andrew. I'm all for hearing unreleased Carl "lead" vocals but when it's just placeholders (that I doubt he'd want anyone to hear) then it just doesn't interest me. After hearing so much about this song I had high hopes but it does absolutely nothing for me. On about Cali Dreamin' I mentioned on another thread how awesome Crosby's part is, Al and Glen sound great too.

Talking about Crosby, I noticed on youtube that CSN have started playing Suite: Judy Blue Eyes again! About time!
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Waves of Love on: April 04, 2012, 12:43:53 PM
I've been listening to it and trying to like it (I have a soft spot for Al's solo album btw) but it all just falls flat for me. I think there's a reason Al didn't include it on the album itself, his singing doesn't sound as good as it usually does and the song itself is pretty boring. I can't see this being anywhere near the new BB's album unless it's undergone a serious rewrite.

Valid points. I think the download version is *significantly* better. A different key, much punchier, etc. The CD version is rather flat, limp, etc.

I still think the track is better than a few of the tracks that ended up on the album. I'll take it over "San Simeon" or "And I Always Will."

Downloaded the three 'new' tracks and Waves Of Love is quite good, as HeyJude has said it's better than tracks such as San Simeon and the horribly derivitive title track. The new version of California Dreamin' is damn good too with Glen's vocal in particular a stand out, this is my favourite version of the three Beach Boys & related versions. The new Sloop John B? Well it's inoffensive and jaunty but seems pointless to me.

Man i've had the new California Dreamin' on repeat, I absolutely love how stripped back it is. Al sounds great and Crosby's weary sounding voice adds a lot. Like you say Glen sounds great, I can't believe he's in his mid 70's! Is that Sloop John B exactly the same as the one from Al's kids book? It's not that it sounds bad but because the words are different I can't sing along!  LOL
