Title: My letter to Santa: What should we ask for? "B.B. FAQ"? "Pet Sounds (33 1/3)"?
Post by: PongHit on November 21, 2011, 09:39:37 AM

My Xmas letter to Santa — what else should I ask for?

So far, I think I want:

"The Beach Boys FAQ" book.

"Pet Sounds (33 1/3)" book.

"Beach Boys at Carnegie Hall - 1972" or a Live 72-73 Box Set!
"Beach Boys Ultimate Rarities" - Would contain nearly everything that hasn't officially been released (especially WIBNTLA)

If you don't have it yet, get the 'Brian Wilson: Songwriter' movie - I got it last Christmas and have watched it numerous times since.

Also, ask for a red rider BB gun, carbine action, 200 shot rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time.*

*Christmas Story reference, don't actually go out and buy a gun! ;D

The 2-DVD documentary film — have it, love it, watched it many times!

I'd get both of these in a heartbeat, but at the moment I'm trying to give my family a list of products that already exist for Xmas, 2011.  ;D

"Pet Sounds (33 1/3)" book.

Can I get opinions about this book? I'm thinking it might not contain any (many?) details that are new for me…?  ???

Re: Pet sounds 331/3.  I have 2 copies of it actually (got it as a gift twice...)  It is alright, I enjoyed it but it is hardly essential reading.  It is mostly someone's personal relationship with the album and offers little in the way of insight into the recording, performing and writing of the album.

John Stebbin's FAQ, however is absolutely essential reading and a must have.  I really enjoyed it and of course as I'm sure you know, Jon put the same care and attention as he did in his top notch essential David Marks and Dennis Wilson books.  I don't entirely agree with 100% of what he writes (I take a slightly different opinion on how Brian is regarding his solo material and years) but I enjoy his writing style and look forward to more material from him in the future.

Has anyone here read 'Wouldn't It Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of Pet Sounds'???
(http://www.amazon.com/Wouldnt-Be-Nice-Wilson-Frontier/dp/1556525079/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1321900266&sr=8-5 (http://www.amazon.com/Wouldnt-Be-Nice-Wilson-Frontier/dp/1556525079/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1321900266&sr=8-5))

According to the reviewers on Amazon it's an incredible book well worth getting. But the reviews I've seen for the Pet Sounds 33 1/3 book are kinda average.

Wouldn't it be Nice and the Making of PS is great.  Very well written and informative.  Place it way ahead of getting the 33 and 1/3 book.

Whoops now I feel stupid...I thought this was a "what should we as beach boys fans ask for" thread...maybe I shouldn't reply to posts when I'm in a hurry...

Re: the 33&1/3rd series, the Song Cycle book is worth it - plenty of history, good interviews (including one with the man who came up with the infamous ad) and some good Van Dykeisms.

You are welcome Ponghit!  I think I have every major legit BB /BW book in my library and enjoy increasing my knowledge of the band.  The only one that i haven't bought yet is Endless Summer: My Life With The Beach Boys because I was hoping Amazon.ca would carry it but so far only amazon.com has it so I may have to buck up and pay for the shipping...

As for the women (dirty or no) good luck gents!

Maybe think about what might genuinely be in your stockings NEXT Christmas.

(well we already know what Mikie & Smilin' Ed fancy in stockings but…)

1) The SMiLE Sessions DVD – the ten-part YouTube series expanded into a full documentary.
2) 50th anniversary box set of rarities
3) Sunflower Delux set
4) Carnegie Hall Live In Concert set
5) Used ticket stubs from re-union concert
6) Beach Boys' Ocean Way (tbc) reunion album
7) New Brian Wilson album containing much new original material

Can't see any of them making it for Christmas 2011 now but I think they're all wishes that might have come true by Christmas 2012.

The only thing I have on my list for Christmas 2013 is a CD release of Postcards From California but that's perhaps wishing for too much!  ;D

Likely? Seems like a full doc is already completed?

2) 50th anniversary box set of rarities

6) Beach Boys' Ocean Way (tbc) reunion album

Of course there will be some type of 50th celebration(s).

3) Sunflower Delux set
4) Carnegie Hall Live In Concert set
7) New Brian Wilson album containing much new original material

Unlikely by Xmas 2012.

If not complete then something can't be far away: simply fleshing out the existing seven episodes an the three so-far unreleased – which form a fantastic base – with period footage, some narration, etc would be an obvious next move, if it hasn't already been done.  My guess is they're way ahead of us!

6) Beach Boys' Ocean Way (tbc) reunion album

Has anybody realized that
 OCEAN WAY
would be a great title for the "new" Beach Boys album?  They could take a picture of the surviving Beach Boys walking in the crosswalk outside the studio, just like some OTHER famous album........

^Ugh. Bunch of old geezers exiting the Ocean Way Studio on the way to getting the early bird special at Denny's :lol

I think 'Ocean Way' is a great album name, but they need a cover like 'Summer Love Songs' for it, methinks.
