I remember back when the reissue came out being really disappointed about the wrong mixes being used, and I read somewhere (I think it was on one of those cards they use in record stores for the artists name) that you could send in the srewed-up version for the right one, but since I have a couple copies of the original I just figured "hey, alt. mixes...cool." I think I remember someone saying that if you sent in your re-master you got a CDR with the correct versions, but who knows...?

Am I the only person in the world to make it to the part of the movie (around 52 minutes in) where Brian Wilson stars as the Surfite?!! I mean, it's Brian doing another great weird voice ala Mt. Vernon! Can you dig it?!!!http://www.hulu.com/watch/168243/tales-of-the-rat-fink?c=News-and-Information/Documentary-and-Biography

Life intervening has made me just over 4,000 words behind schedule. eeek
Ahh, don't sweat it. One month or five, if you get a novel done, even if it sucks, you've done more than most people have ever tried. At least that's what i tell myself.
304  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: NANOWRIMO, anyone? on: November 08, 2010, 06:50:01 AM
I began a novel this month called "Hack". It's sort of a thriller with a cabbie (Hack) as the protagonist and sort of touches on my voluntaryist/agorist leanings. Whether or not I finish it this month, I do intend to finish it. Best of luck hypehat!
305  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Summer Moon (aka The Surfer Moon) on: November 04, 2010, 07:23:28 AM
Sounded to me like "summer " may be crudely overdubbed over "surfer".
Naw. On the sessions for the BB version you can hear Murry reminding Brian that it's now 'Surfer moon', rather than summer, so this must be the original.

I was also wondering if anyone has noticed  from this link(second half of the show) that during "In My Room" how Carl and Al are trying not to laugh while singing and Brian keeps looking over at them starting @ 4:44, (I think they are starting to sing outta key ?).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQnv8q4N1f4&feature=related

BeeKeeper
Yeah, Carl starts singing off key and Brian keeps giving him that WTF are you doing look. Carl is obviously avoiding eye-contact with BW, but Al is doing a good job of not losing it. Later, when Carl was in charge of the live thing he was famous for giving musicians that same look.
307  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are Brian's vocals actually Billy's? (Funky Pretty) on: October 25, 2010, 06:33:50 PM
Also, compared to the other "On my Way"s, the first one DOES sound sped up. Why would they do that for only the first one? My guess is that's all they had for the original recording, but when they decided to put it out on a single they remixed it and had Brian do a couple more 'On my Way's because they thought it was cool and he was willing. Maybe that day he had no trouble with the pitch, so it wasn't slowed, or maybe the entire song was sped up after his original vocals were put on, but he just sang it at that faster speed when it came time to overdub the later parts.

Small problem with your theory - if you listen to the album version, Brian's parts on the single mix are there too. They're very faint, almost as if they're bleed from another track... but they're there. They weren't added for the 45, they mixed out for the album. Grin
Damn. I guess I haven't listened to the album version in a while ( I put the single on my Holland mix, and got rid of Beaks of Eagles), but I sure never noticed those vox there before. Still, it was a good theory, just didn't stand up to reality. Also, Bri really does sound wheezy to me.

Manson would have been useless in Afghanistan or anywhere else as a murderer.  His talent wasn't as a killer, it was as a manipulator of minds.  Other people did all his dirty work.
In that case he'd be a good General or President...

Did he do it? I would've, especially if squeaky were the messenger (for all sorts of f-ed up reasons!).
312  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson...\ on: October 19, 2010, 11:24:13 AM
In a perfect world yes - no wars. But we don't live in a perfect world and some conflicts ARE unavoidable. WW2 had to happen. A madman was trying to wipeout half the planet and he had to be stopped. Every country has the right to protect itself from invaders. That is not the same as going to other countries to wage wars which I am totally against.
Oh yeah, 'countries' go to war. Uh uh. Individuals are sent to war. And NEVER to save innocents, but to help insure the well-being of the State and Empire. How did carpet bombing Dresden (a city full of 'civilians') protect 'us'? You see, when you follow the axiom of non-aggression to it's logical conclussion, an individual can only morally take the life of another individual who poses an immediate threat of harm. Not a possible threat. A real, active, gonna kill you threat. You cannot justify killing innocents in order to save innocents. You see, it makes no sense (said in an over-the-top Bill Hicks way). Please see this article written during the Great War (WW1) for more insight http://antiwar.com/bourne.php
Sorry to come off as a dick, but when will people stop justifying evil, even if it's the lesser of two (or more)?

I've got into arguments in Manson threads before, and I think with you, Dada, but the implication that there are 'right' people to kill, and that this is a good thing, is what's abhorrent to me in your statement. Got it?

I can get behind your comments if you're against all forms of war. In that case, I respect your position and believe it to be commendable.

Well, there are shades of grey. I am against most war, yes. WWI (the Somme excluded) and it's sequel are exceptions, but it's not like I'm exactly a fan of what either side did to each other. I do not think the examples you cited are 'good' wars. But we are derailing this thread!  Grin
How can ANY war be okay in any way? It's that exact gray-area thinking that allows unlimited wars to go on forever, because, after all, there's always someone who thinks it's a just war. No war, all the time. That's as simple as it gets. The morals are clear...

Does a lead vocal exist for the Sandy outtake? The only vocals I have heard are "Sandy baby, it's time we said goodbye", as well as some harmonies at the end. Did lyrics for the song exist at this point? I'm wondering when the lyrics for Sherry SHe Needs Me were composed. Was it before or after Sandy?

I've always wondered about how Brian used a different take of Sandy to sing Sherry on than the one overdubbed with vocals in 1965. The one Brian sings on has more guitar, louder drums, more prominent drums, a horn section, no organ, etc. Unless he's singing on a heavily mixed and overdubbed tape of the original master - But again, I don't get why he would do THAT when the take was finished (at least, instrumentally) already. It's probable that the original lyrics to Sandy were simply Sherry's lyrics, with the obvious name change, considering the "Sandy/Sherry baby, it's time we said goodbye" part.

Guess that's just how Brian works!
Isn't Sandy the one with just the BB playing, whereas Sherry is the wrecking crew? My impression was BW was not totally satisfied with the Sandy version musically, though he went as far as doing some backgrounds before he made this decision, thus, what we've heard. Sherry is earlier, from Today era (right?) and it's a crime they never finished it (though the 76 version is weird/good). I imagine Mike would've come up with some good lyrics for it.

Pretty sure the first 'On my way' is sped up, but the other two are not. Bri's voice does sound pretty bad here though, bad enough to have the group cover for him singing 'spend'. It's like he's wheezing his way through those two sentences, though he still has most of his old tone. Sound like his voice is really deteriorating at this point, which is the likely reason he felt uncomfortable with leads during these year

Exaggerate much? He sounds exactly like he does on "'Til I Die" or "Take A Load Off Your Feet". And why would the first "on my way" section be sped up but not the entire thing?

On that note, I will forever be pissed at this band for not having Brian sing what he sings in the beginning over every chorus. They just feel completely lacking without that lead part, so much so that I drove myself to insanity pasting it over those parts.
No, I'm really not exaggerating. He sounds like he can barely get the sentence out, and clearly muffs it enough for the other guys to have to sing 'send' to cover for him. 317  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Killing Hitler on: October 11, 2010, 05:57:54 AM
This assumes Hitler was the sole, or even main, reason for the holocaust, and WWII in general. Like most 'leaders', those pulling the strings behind the scenes likely guided this bad guy.
To answer your question, no, I would not kill a child. Perhaps I would try to build his self-esteem, or show him the possibilities of love and families, but I would not kill him. There is never any moral justification for killing an innocent. Besides, what if you went back in time, tried to kill Hitler, failed, and thus created the monster you want to kill? According to my understanding of speculative physics, even if one could go back in time he/she could never change the past. There is an interesting book about this called Time Machines: Time Travel in Physics, Metaphysics, and Science Fiction that follows the above logic.

Which makes me wonder - does anyone know what the story is behind this cover photo?

I recognise Brian, Spector, Jack Nietzche (with shades in the background), Mike and Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers.

To Mike's right is Ron Swallow and to Brian's left always struck me as Bob Hope! Corrections welcome.

Who's Ron Swallow?
He was a roadie, I think, and relative of Brian's (i think).

In its own simple, quite way, that's actually pretty badass. Whose lyrics were they?

Mike & Van Dyke. I hear Jack helped too.
I heard the original lyrics were by Tandyn Almer and Tony Asher.

I'm surprised that Drip Drop leaked out.

"Drip Drop".  You mean "Teardrops On My Bed"?  What makes you think that one leaked out?  It isn't on any boot (that I know of).

True... but there's a kind of limbo between the securely locked vaults, and boots. Let's say it's in 'limited circulation'.  Roll Eyes
I'm fairly certain everyone on this board can easily get this tune. One day it just showed up...

Our Team is actually more fun, way better and more Brian Wilsony than almost any other BB song from the 80's. I especially love Bri's imitation of Dennis in the harmonies.

Re watched this and another Manson documentary yesterday and something struck me - many of The Manson girls were HOT! Deranged for sure but still hot. Poor taste I know, but if you guys could have done the nasty with one of them back in the day ( and gonorrhea was not an issue) who would you pick?
I've always kinda thought Squeaky was, uh...cute, I guess. I'm a sucker for those little red-heads.
Sandra Good is sorta hot but way, way too wacky. Somehow I think Squeaky tops 'em.
