Little Richard Post by: Summer_Days on May 09, 2020, 11:41:23 AM Somehow I thought Little Richard would live forever, almost - he always seemed perennially young in some way. Whereas Elvis seemed pretty old when he died at 42, basically the same age as me, the youth of Little Richard as well as the fire in Jerry Lee Lewis would see them both outlive their peers. Now only Jerry Lee remains of that first generation. Their legacy is so huge, it’s immeasurable. RIP the Georgia Peach.

Yes, Richard always seemed so energetic, so full of fire, just brimming with life. I saw a video of him a couple years ago on a Seventh Day Adventist channel, no wig, no makeup, no flashy clothes...I didn't recognize him. He looked good for an 80-something man, he was still funny, but he couldn't move, confined to a wheelchair. Old age is no fun. But he kept Father Time at bay for several decades. I'm glad he lived long enough to receive the honors he so deeply deserved. Title: Re: R. I. P. My first memory of Little Richard was hearing his raucous version of "Baby Face" on the radio as a kid in 1959. (I see it reached #2 in the UK.) Four years later I heard the even more raucous flipside in a musical instrument store in my home town--at ear-splitting volume. Ooo mah soul!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taeQHVVl8_U To quote Greil Marcus, he knew how to rock. Rest in peace, sir. Title: Re: R. I. P. Thanks for sharing that, Rocker. ;) You're welcome! At first I was afraid this would be a list of only his 50s hits, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw the songs from later years. Especially my favorite "I don't know what you got". That's such a great record! Oh and by the way, I just listened to my LP of "The second coming". It's actually better than what I remembered. If you like funk then this could be interesting for you. Title: Re: R. I. P. Little Richard Post by: Rocker on May 13, 2020, 02:35:17 AM Here's another list.

Little Richard Post by: Lonely Summer on April 13, 2023, 07:00:06 PM I was watching a discussion about the movie earlier today, and one of the main points the filmmaker wants to make is Elvis was not the King of Rock & Roll, Little Richard was. It's sad that all these years later, people are still accusing Elvis of being a racist who just stole music from black people. Elvis never asked people to call him "the king". Even Richard seemed to have backed off of that in later years. I saw one talk show where he said 'Elvis and I are friends, and we know who the King is, he's up above us, but I am the originator, the emancipator, the architect of rock and roll".
Title: Re: R. I. P. Little Richard Post by: Rocker on April 23, 2023, 02:33:59 AM That's a shame. I've never heard Richard say anything about Elvis that wasn't positive. And it never seemed that he saw him as some kind of "rival" in that sense. It's bad that so many times people have to create a situation that was not there. One needs only to look on the many interviews on youtube that Richard gave.

I love both, but I would definitely consider Richard and maybe Chuck Berry as the 'true' Kings of Rock n' Rolll. Elvis was a far more versatile artist. Title: Re: R. I. P.
