Just curious how much airplay the Beach Boys get on SiriusXM these days ?

I started my 3 month free trial yesterday and have already heard Wouldn't It Be Nice, California Girls, and Little Deuce Coupe on the 60s channel despite primarily listening to the 50s, Elvis, and Beatles channels. It's cool to see that they've got some play on other channels (Do It Again and Hang On To Your Ego on Underground Garage; Marcella and Funky Pretty on Deep Tracks), anyone else have any examples? Do they get much play on the 70s or 80s channels? Songs from the early 70s albums or the singles from the 70s/80s?

I think now would be a good juncture to vote for Good Night.

Or Birthday. Tough choice...

Good Night

And, honestly, Murry co-produced "Be With Me" and "Transcendental Meditation".

Did you mean to type, "Be Still" ?

Anyway, thanks so much for the insights, c-man! It's greatly appreciated.

I'm with ya SMiLE-addict. I'm always reminded of Paul's cherished memory - listening to John sing 'Good Night' in the studio. Why didn't they record it? Would have been a great addition to the Anthology! Oh well.

No.

Hmmm, by not including any negative options, it's almost like he's trying to tell us what to think........

Gonna start my own poll methinks.

Wait, was this poll started by OP? If so that’s ironic they claim we don’t respect opinions when clearly the poll they posted indicates that they don’t respect certain opinions. This person will fit right in over there.

Oh come on, Dutchie's poll proved their point (the need for a new poll with trollish options). Go back and read the original post (HeyJude quoted it); "Why all the Mike Love hate" "why [is] everybody so negative about ML". It seems to be a matter of degree, doesn't it? I think it's reasonable to consider whether the criticism/abuse of Mike is disproportionate. I don't know Dutchie, if he/she was speaking in code or had ulterior motives, but regardless, I have noticed some posters who almost exclusively post positive things about all Beach Boys related music (yes, including Mike solo) made to feel unwelcome. I'm not condemning the board, just noting that, if true, that's too bad.

You listed 2 times Nilsson - if we change it to Top 5, would it be again Nilsson or smb. else?

I think I only have a top 3 Grin Those are the especially noteworthy ones to me. Perhaps I'd consider CSN performing 'Blackbird' in the top 5. That's another one I seek out to listen to from time to time. I've enjoyed many Beatles covers, but I'm also not particularly interested. I'd rather just listen to the Beatles! That said, I've recently been listening to Yusuf/Cat Stevens versions of Long And Winding Road, All Things Must Pass, and The Day The World Gets 'Round. He's also performed Love Me Do and All You Need Is Love live. Completely off-topic now, but (as a Beatles fan) I think it's pretty cool that after quitting popular music for decades, Yusuf reemerges with a great affinity for the Beatles music. Prior to his performing these songs in recent years I wasn't aware of any significant fondness for or connection to the Beatles (other than recording with Ringo once in the late '70s).

John Fogerty included "I won't back down" in his current show. Here's him giving a tribute to Tom Petty:

Apparently, Jason Aldean also performed 'I Won't Back Down' last night on SNL. Good choice.

Good Vibrations? Well, oh my, oh gosh, oh gee...5!

And Little Pad? 4.5 (rounded down to 4). One of my favorites. Love it!

Btw, while it's been mentioned before, Little Pad was prominently featured after the opening credits of the 1/20/17 Hawaii 5-0 episode 'Ka Laina Ma Ke One' [S7:E14].

Question to B.E., JK & whole Smiley lot - what's your Top 3 favorite Beatles covers? To "Hey Jude", I'd add Tenacious D's "And Your Bird Can Sing" & Slade's "Martha My Dear". You tell now.

-in no specific order-

Harry Nilsson - Mother Nature's Son [greatest, most faithful recreation]

Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude [incredible, authentic interpretation]

Harry Nilsson - You Can't Do That [most creative and fun]

I think Nilsson's Mother Nature's Son sounds more like The Beatles version than any other Beatles cover I've ever heard. Of course, the bigger Beatles or Nilsson fan you are the easier it is to tell them apart, but that's always true. Beautiful song, beautifully sung. Listening to Nilsson's various Beatles-related work, it's obvious how much he admired them. As a Beatles fan, I appreciate that.

I think Pickett's Hey Jude stands up in its own right...and then some. Most Beatles covers feel more like tributes to me, perhaps most are. Not this one. A lot of people would add Cocker's With A Little Help From My Friends to this category (I'm not crazy about it...I'd rather listen to the Beatles version 99% of the time). But, generally speaking, I think the Beatles just loom too large to successfully cover. You can't compete with their presence.

I'm kinda at a crossroad with a song, Hold Me Tight

I love love love the Beatles' version, but then again, I love Spector's version (The Treasures, I believe). Both very different versions of the song. The instrumental track to Spector's is far superior in my opinion, but the Beatles is more of a bubblegum/pop type song (IMO). To me, the Treasures' vocals on HMT is more of a 50s/motown/soul type.

What's your thoughts?

Which is better?
Btw, yes, blast from the past, but I wanted to thank punkinhead for bringing this cover of Hold Me Tight to my attention! Cool.

Hey Baby- Ringo
Also, this is awesome  Grin

This infuriatingly brief snippet is from the utterly wonderful "Savoy Truffle", which has most cruelly been voted out at the "Survivor" topic. Great lyrics, fantastic sax lines, great ambience. Folks, please reconsider!

It hasn't been and it's not about to be.

Favorite Beatles cover - "Hey Jude" by Wilson Pickett.

I was just listening to that last night! Great cover!

Yusuf / Cat Stevens - The Laughing Apple released September 15, 2017

I'm finally digging into this album and I'm very impressed! Yusuf hasn't sounded more comfortable since his return to popular music with 2006's An Other Cup. This album is an all-around call-back to his earlier material. From the artwork, to the songs, to collaborating with guitarist Alun Davies and producer Paul Samwell-Smith. For those interested, here is a breakdown of the song origins...

1. Blackness of the Night (previously released on 'New Masters')
2. See What Love Did To Me
3. The Laughing Apple (previously released on 'New Masters')
4. Olive Hill
5. Grandsons (previously released on 'Very Best of Cat Sevens' and 'On the Road to Find Out' Box Set)
6. Mighty Peace (written in the '60s)
7. Mary and the Little Lamb (written in the '60s)
8. You Can Do (Whatever) (written in the '70s for Harold and Maude)
9. Northern Wind (Death of Billy the Kid) (Previously released on 'New Masters')
10. Don't Blame Them
11. I'm So Sleepy (Previously released on 'New Masters')

A lot of really nice moments here. I love the production. Early favorites include You Can Do (Whatever), Blackness of the Night, Mighty Peace, Northern Wind, and Don't Blame Them. He sounds incredible considering his debut was 50 years ago!

So, who wins more games: Knicks or Bulls? What other teams are their main competition for the #1 draft pick? I've been focusing so much on the improved teams that I'm not so sure who the worst teams are. Obviously, health will probably be the main factor. No doubt KP misses some games here and there, as well.

I'm actually looking forward to watching the Knicks, though. If they play hard on both ends and play unselfishly, I'll watch. Not having that superstar-type guy is refreshing to me. Players often end up deferring to such an extent it stifles the game. Ultimately, it comes down to culture, but still...

And as for comparing this to the Wiggles, what on earth did the Wiggles do to deserve that?

Leave the poor f**king Wiggles be.

I hadn't heard of the Wiggles prior to this thread, but they are anything but poor LOL

Auto-Tune is in full force! Robo-Mike is back and with revenge from the Beach! LOL

I don't think so. Do It Again 2017? Absolutely!!! I just listened to it again and it's even worse than I remember. That track is an embarrassment. I couldn't help but laugh numerous times. Unleash The Love, on the other hand, is much more tastefully done. It's a fine song and it sounds great (or good, at least). If it's indicative of the quality of the rest of the tracks, then I think it's a worthy release by Mike and good on him for releasing music (I'm speaking more about disc 1 than disc 2). I think if some of the hardcore fans removed their feelings about Mike from the song for a moment they'd hear a harmless, nice-sounding song. Basically, I don't think it would be fair to trash it.

Well, this is a very disturbing trend...
What's that?

Maybe B.E. likes "Long Long Long".

That's right, RR! I wish I could adequately describe my feelings on the song, but I can't.

Meanwhile, Savoy Truffle has no business outlasting Long Long Long.

I love the little jump in the bass at the word "jump".

Me too! Only, I didn't pick up on that on first listen. It bothered me for years! I enjoy the song much more now  Grin

Wonderfully uncommercial!

Indeed.

547  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love - Unleash the Love - Due November 17 - w/ 2nd Disc of BB Remakes on: October 04, 2017, 02:38:30 PM
So, 5 of the 13 "brand new songs" have been previously released and 2 of which are actually BBs songs? I'm not a Mike Love solo career expert, but wasn't I Don't Wanna Know on a Celebration album, Cool Head Warm Heart on a BBs comp, and Pisces Brothers on a recent comp.

I'm not crazy about the BBs logo being featured either. It's perfectly fine to note that he is "Mike Love of the Beach Boys," but to use the logo within that statement seems questionable to me. Whatever, though, I'll certainly check it out and I'd rather these guys release material than not.

Edit: Potentially 6 of the 13 songs on disc 1 have been previously released; if Crescent Moon is 'Love Like In Fairytales'.

All-Star game update: No more East vs West. Two captains will pick teams and they will play for charity.

No need to underscore the talent imbalance between the conferences, I suppose.  Grin

I'd love it if this ultimately led to a playoff change as well. Trial run?

f***.  This one really hurts. Sad

Just an incredibly likeable and talented guy. What else is there to say?  I was already depressed about the Vegas disaster, this didn't make today any easier.

My thoughts exactly.

Man, this shocked me. It's hard to accept. I've bonded with many people over his music. He's always been a part of my life. He's up there with the all-time greats. Can't believe it. Really sad.
