Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: John Stebbins FAQ Book: Rather harsh on Brian's Solo Tours and Handlers?

Howie Edelson has a direct quote, on tape from Brian, recent, where he says the worst thing about touring is going on stage.
It's interesting - you usually hear artists say the exact opposite. The travelling sucks, being away from family sucks, everything sucks, but being on stage is the part that they really enjoy and that, in some cases, "makes it all worthwhile." It's unfortunate that the music industry works the way it does now. Being a great artist isn't good enough, you HAVE to tour whether you can handle it or not. Or have a really well-paying job on the side, which is not really conducive to doing the whole "artist" thing. I doubt Brian really needs to tour, but still. I'm sure Brian does have the occasional night where he does enjoy performing, but I sometimes wonder if the folks around him think he's seemingly better off when he's touring even if he doesn't realize it. Like, he's mentally better being productive and having a consistent schedule instead of staying at home. I can't say for sure if that's correct, I'm just saying that may be a reason that he continues to tour; the folks who run his career think it's good for him. Personally, at his age (which is the biggest factor in all of this, I feel. The man is in his 70s.), if he told me he felt better hanging out at home, writing and recording when it felt good to do so and maybe doing a few shows a year, I'd say that's good enough for me. But I don't know and can't say for sure, I'm not in his life, so I ultimately realize I may not be "right" about all of this.

Thanks a lot for posting this! The first post, about the phasing - it sounds like someone took a mono verse and tried to put it through some kind of filter to "stereoize" it to match the rest of the song. I really, really dislike this aspect of the mix. I edited the verse to be in true mono, and while it's not ideal, it sounds a lot better.

Me too. I'd say that the Wilson brothers should've broke away from the group in the late 60s early 70s. They would've been FANTASTIC!
I remember feeling this way in the beginning of my fandom. Nowadays, I'm very glad it didn't happen like this. Granted I'd have done some things differently, but still.

I can't believe it wasn't an A Side, let alone not being released at all for over a couple decades. I just can't fathom them letting this one slip away when they were all upset to one extent or another over their sales slipping so much at that point. I guess I can't say for sure if it would have been a huge seller or anything, but I still think it would have went down as a highlight of that era.
I think it would have been pretty perfect on Sunflower, maybe as a track 1 or 2 or as the opener for side B.

"All About The Bass" or whatever it's called is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Like, I don't know if I've ever heard a more obnoxious vocal on anything. Just... what's the deal, man? I heard her sing some other song which I recognized from a commercial and it was worlds more pleasant than that song. What the fu ck r u DOING TO ME, WORLD

Early black flag was great but they were in constant transitional phase before rollins,,Damaged was the band at their peak.
Eh. Henry sounds raspy/tired on much of the album and the mix sucks, and not in any "omg it's so lofi and kewl" punk rock sorta way. My War is better. Admit it. Also, the Misfits were better than every band you named sans maybe The Ramones. ADMIT IT.

I know that, but the band even then didn't take his stuff seriously because it wasn't the commercial stuff Brian had done.
What do you mean by "didn't take his stuff seriously" - it's not like they kept him from putting songs on their albums or taking leads while playing live. I mean his stuff wasn't "commercial enough" for them. We know the reason why his songs weren't included on Surf's Up, but how about the In Concert album? They couldn't include not one of his songs on there? Dude, what? When did anyone ever say or even allude to Dennis' songs not being "commercial enough" to be included on albums? He was a major creative force on several albums after he started writing songs. I've only heard praise from the other guys in relation to Dennis' songs. Um, I've heard and read that many times before...a couple of them threatened to kick him out of the group if he went and did a solo tour. I know his health and bad habits (and finances) prevented it, but I bet it had more to do with jealousy than anything. And another thing I don't get is why he was stuck singing YASB all the time when he had many great songs on POB. River Song had been performed before with Blondie so why couldn't he sing it (at least during '77 or '78)? Threatening to kick him out of the Beach Boys if he did a solo tour was a dick move, but it has nothing to do with his songs not being "commercial enough." Also, did you ever think that maybe he WANTED to sing "You Are So Beautiful" and wasn't just "stuck" doing so? You're inventing things and using them against the rest of the band.

Sometimes, myself included, I think we sometimes write Bruce off without justification. 50 years since he officially arrived for live...and unofficially for recording. Bruce is absolutely a Beach Boy. And as a guy singin' about surfin' and cars and the California 'myth'...he's one of the originals too. People are *always* out to discredit people who weren't there the very second a band started playing together. "He's not even an original member!" It's total macho rawk n roll bullshit. The fact that he dares to tour with the evil Myk Luhv, who tried to cancel Pet Sounds and sMiLe and stuff, obviously doesn't help his case with these people. I'm referring mostly to people I've seen talk about the Beach Boys off these boards, by the way - no one here that I can think of. Your post was spot on, though.

Doesnt surprise me. Any and Every substantial group PERIOD is influenced by the Beach Boys. And every band/artist in the last 40+ yrs makes it known that they wouldnt exist without em. The greatest of the great I.e. the Ramones, Dictators, Dickies, Descendents, Queers, Travoltas, etc have ALL either covered the BBs and/or borrowed from em, very prevalent.
No. Just no. Don't knock other peoples' tastes. Books, music, movies, dog breeds, trees. Just cause you don't find them to be the greatest, doesn't mean other people can't. In regards to this thread, I found that whole " Ba Ba Barbara Santa Barbara " song to be pretty cringeworthy. I'm not knocking his taste. I didn't say anything about his taste in music. I just don't think every band has been influenced by The Beach Boys. He said "every substantial group", not just "every group." Can't say I agree with him on that (although certainly a lot of my favorite bands happen to be fans, as I later found out), but hey.

I'm not really sure what Brian brings to it that any one else couldn't have, though. In a way you're right, but it's nice to hear "our" Brian in such a for him very unusual track! Yeah. Like, if you could have Brian do a few simple background vocal parts on your song, wouldn't you jump at the opportunity? I totally would. It's Brian sounding nice. Can't complain.
