Title: Beach Boys Survivor #28 Winner: Goin' On
Post by: pixletwin on March 26, 2014, 12:57:04 PM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

Keepin' the Summer Alive is the twenty-fourth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on March 24, 1980 on Brother, Caribou and CBS Records. Produced by band member Bruce Johnston, following aborted attempts to have Brian Wilson return to his former role, the album is the last to feature Dennis Wilson, who would subsequently drown in December 1983.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on March 28th

Keepin' the Summer Alive
Oh Darlin'
Some of Your Love
Livin' with a Heartache
School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell)
Goin' On
Sunshine
When Girls Get Together
Santa Ana Winds
Endless Harmony

School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell) gets my vote for least favorite. Uninspired cover song.

Not only is it the worst thing here, it's my least favourite Beach Boys song in general. Bruce's section is god awful, Carl's vocal is way too over sung, and it has the lyrics"God Bless America"

I don't mind that song. Other than the awful lyrics, I'd say it's one of the better songs here. The singing is actually the best part of it!
Plus it's the last BB's song that features Dennis in any way.

I voted for Heartache last time, but now I'm not so sure.

Maybe... Oh Darlin'?

It's nowhere near the worst-written song (the Brian-lead version is really quite good) but it sounds awful here. The opening chord sounds like a death toll.

This album is so hard to order.  There's only one song I like with certainty, and everything else just falls in some pool of mediocrity.  Most have their moments, or would be alright with a better production, but never really come together as a song I want to revisit.

I'll go with Some of Your Love next, because Mike's heavy nasal performance just grates.

Really? I think it is kind of grandiose. The verse about the ladies listening to one of their friends speak about the heartache caused by the recent death of her husband followed by some little girls giggling about some boys they have a crush on and getting home before dark always feels me with a sense of wonder at the whole cradle-to-the-grave drama of being human. That it manages to do so without any hint at all of pretension really makes it beautiful to me.

Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

Quote
Keepin' the Summer Alive is the twenty-fourth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on March 24, 1980 on Brother, Caribou and CBS Records. Produced by band member Bruce Johnston, following aborted attempts to have Brian Wilson return to his former role, the album is the last to feature Dennis Wilson, who would subsequently drown in December 1983.

Are people voting for When Girls Get Together because it's a track which is not of the era? I love that song. Maybe even my favorite on this album.

Sunshine... There is none. (17) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on April 3rd

Santa Ana Winds

Round#1 - School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell) March 28
Round#2 - Endless Harmony March 30
Round#3 - Sunshine April 1

Some of your Love has got to be the next to go.

WHEN GIRLS GET TOGETHER has to go next.

And I'm not voting it off because it's not of the era (not being of this particular era is generally a good thing) - I'm voting it off because it's terminally mundane.

The only song I'm really bothered about on this album is Oh Darlin' (purely for its classic tune- the words, singing and performance do it no favours).

Can't place a vote as that would mean relistening to the album.

Some of Your Love is fun, especially when they used the synth instead of the horns - almost sounded like a Love You outtake.

Livin With a Heartache gets my vote. Way too plodding for my tastes. I understand a concise single version exists, which could potentially shift my feelings toward the song, unfortunately I've yet to come across it.

Livin/h-ache - yeah, perhaps shoulda been released as a Carl & Bruce single.  Like a few (but not all) other Carl songs of this era, no Bass vox in the stack gives it a different feel, although that could be a Bruce production decision.

I was familiar with the lovely bootleg version before I heard the KTSA version and I still remember being shocked by the huge drop in quality. The production? Those lyrics? That intro? All terrible. How to f**k up a good song...

Livin' With A Heartache is by some considerable distance the best song remaining.

Welcome back to the FINAL ROUND of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR.

16 smilers agreed they were Livin' With A Heartburn after hearing this song. (16) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual in the final round of Survivor, we VOTE FOR OUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!!

Tally on April 11th

Keepin' the Summer Alive
Goin' On
Santa Ana Winds

Round#1 - School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell) March 28
Round#2 - Endless Harmony March 30
Round#3 - Sunshine April 1
Round#4 - When Girls Get Together April 3
Round#5 - Some of Your Love April 5
Round#6 - Oh Darlin' April 7
Round#7 - Livin' with a Heartache April 9

Keepin' the Summer Alive is a good song (in a way). But it fails to really get me going the way I think it was meant to.

I love Santa Anna Winds. It sounds as if it belongs on Holland to my ears. But not the best.

I believe this represented the final shard of SMiLE to be recycled on a Beach Boys album. It's the only song I feel where the song writing is solid. The production doesn't get in the way and the performances are nailed - emotionally and technically. A true BB classic.

Goin' On.

If the production of Keepin' The Summer Alive sounded more like the Live At Knebworth version, I would probably vote for it, but the studio version is a little boring to me, which is why I am voting for Goin' On.

Santa Ana Winds is a good tune, but the chorus vocals - way high in the mix - seem harshly shrill to me.

Keepin' the Summer Alive, as others have mentioned, is much better live, but the KTSA version lacks something.

Which leaves my favorite tune on the album - despite Mike's annoying nasality (oh, if we only had a version with Carl doing the entire lead, then we'd have world peace)...

Goin' On.

It's by far the best song remaining, poor production and all.

Santa Ana Winds is a good song poorly realised - the bootleg version is vastly superior.

I just don't get Goin' On. It's no classic to my ears.

"Goin' On" IS a classic.  Looks like it will win.  But does not get my vote as Best.
Even though Carl did improve his soulful vocal live, the studio version is still the Best song on this album.  Carl wanted The Beach Boys to be his Rock-n-Roll Band.  This song works on so many levels.  Rock On Carl!!
My vote goes to:
"Keepin' The Summer Alive"
Yeah, Yeah!  Uh Huh!  I know we'll Keep The Summer...

At least they fit the melody, unlike the awkward overly-wordy lyrics on the album version. And at least the chorus on the bootleg version has a bit of life too it and hasn't been over-produced to the point of being utterly sterile.

In direct contrast to round#27... round#28 is probably the biggest shutout voting since Darlin' was voted SURVIVOR of Wild Honey.

Quote

2 smilers enjoyed the Santa's Wind. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

10 smilers attempted to Keep the Summer Alive, but ultimately failed. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

THE WINNER of the 28th round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR with 28 votes is....

Goin' On

Round#1 - School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell) March 28
Round#2 - Endless Harmony March 30
Round#3 - Sunshine April 1
Round#4 - When Girls Get Together April 3
Round#5 - Some of Your Love April 5
Round#6 - Oh Darlin' April 7
Round#7 - Livin' with a Heartache April 9
Round#8 - Santa Ana Winds April 11
Round#8 - Keepin' the Summer Alive

Don't forget that we still have two voting rounds left in BBSurvivor#26!!!!!

"Goin' On" - Never great, usually acceptable to good depending on the mood. "Santa Ana Winds" is the album's best track but the production does suffer and the shrill backing vocals less than stellar. Come to think of it KTSA is full of shrill backgrounds.

The critical view of the time - for some - was that KTSA was a stronger effort than L.A. It was not. L.A. is soooo close to being a good album with some stellar stuff and a few less than great moments. KTSA will always be hopelessly mediocre.

My take is Goin' On is a fun song with a sub par production, which is good enough for a winner on this album.  There are no slam dunk performances here, which is why I have it as the third worst album behind only Summer in Paradise and Stars and Stripes.

Agree with you both. Santa Ana Winds would be the definite winner if not for this overrated slice of tune. It's not just about artificial intensity, except for Brian's "Goin' o-on", I don't see anything sincere in the song. Rather the group attempting to rejuvenate the old friendly self but fails. Even title track has more edge to it.

And now it's going on to the Ultimate Survivors round  ::)
