I love how Brian shoots Mike at the end of Long Tall Texan and then takes over the lead vocal on the next song.

I had seen most of these before, but I was blown away by the "Mess Of Help" video.  It's kind of weird...it seems like live vocals on a prerecorded instrumental track.  It gives me an idea of what the song would have sounded like with better mixing.  "Carl & The Passions" has always been in my top 5 albums...it would probably be even higher on my list if the sound mix wasn't so muddled, and matched that of, say, 20/20, Sunflower, or KTSA.

While watching the Ellen BW performance, I noticed a very impressive video of a group called "Holland Smiles", which did an a capella version of "Heroes & Villains" in front of Jeff Foskett right by the tour bus.  Very impressive.

I hadn't seen that one for quite a while...a very fun video...it's funny to see Bruce mimic Adrian's vocal and also the sax part.

I didn't know till now that was Adrian Baker.  It sounds like Bruce to me.  Figured he was singing the high part like he was originally paid to do!

It was indeed an uncredited Adrian vocal on Hot Fun In The Summertime.

Based on this performance I can say with full confidence they were the best band ever. Listen to the energy in this performance. Dennis' explosive drumming, Carl's awesome guitar playing, Al's awesome guitar chugging, Mike's explosive lead, Brian's rolling bass an swimming falsetto, and the greatness of the song itself. This beats every other performance from the "screaming girls" decade.

I gotta agree that this demonstrates the amazing power of the BB's as a very dynamic live act. I'd say the version of Dance, Dance, Dance from the same concert is even better. There is no doubt they were exciting, and the audience loved them...they already had the Beatlemania vibe going by the end of '63, I've read concert reviews that describe a T.A.M.I. like scene(unfortunately no live footage of the late '63 group exists)...but of course the actual Beatles kind of obscured that the next Feb. anyway. Just the same... T.A.M.I. (filmed in 11/64) is a wonderful example of the frenzy the Beach Boys generated at their early peak.

I always imagined them doing "I'm Waiting For The Day" with such energy as is displayed on this "I Get Around" performance. Imagine the thunderous sounds of Denni's smashing on his toms and snare, then the whole band BURSTS in only to lead to a quiet verse. The chorus would be explosive with Brian shouting out those words with both Al and Carl singing with him on that line.

Brian doesn't look too recovered in that performance. And this was the height of the Brian Is Back Campaign? Didn't the general public notice something is really wrong with him. The Beach Boys must of been pretty greedy to push him into the spotlight when he was in that condition. Sheesh...

Actually the BB's were pissed off they weren't asked to be on Saturday Night Live too. This appearance was purely a Landy thing.

Isn't that picture of Brian as the "Good Humor Man" one of the photos of the band included with the Sunflower album?  (Including Al with an accordion, IIRC.)  The photos appear to have been taken at the "town square" location on the Universal Studios back lot (which was very prominently used in the movie "Back to the Future.")  Although one would have thought the pictures would have been taken on the Warner Bros. lot, given Sunflower was the Boys' first LP for Warners -- for all I know that lot belonged to Warners in 1970 and was later acquired by Universal.  The picture of Brian is included in the Sunflower/Surf's Up two-fer CD.

That one is so completely utterly freakin' cool!  Makes me so sad the Beach Boys never did a "Hard Days Night" kind of movie.

Look at that "Little Cycle" thing! No wonder people think the BBoys were and always would be dorks! While Lennon was making hilariously sly jokes to the audience, the Beach Boys were changing the words of their own songs to suit sponsers!

Wait a minute, there.  Even those bad boys the Rolling Stones succumbed to pressure to change the lyrics to "Let's Spend the Night Together" when they appeared on Ed Sullivan.  And that was two years after the "Little Cycle" appearance.

Plenty of Brian's music was way cooler than anyone elses of the same time, in my opinion. Take "Here Today" for example. Think of those huge organ chops, the pulsating bass.

About the David Frost performance...

Actually, that photo is from the Warner Bros. backlot. It's still largely intact in Burbank and can be seen weekly on the WB's "Gilmore Girls" (the gazebo features in almost every episode). The Universal "town square" featured in the "Back To The Future" series is different.

Scary. Brian is near 300 pounds and within a year will be near death, spurring his reunion with Landy. Carl will be disgusted and gone from the band the following year. Dennis has already been temporarily kicked out, and while this TV performence is being filmed he's off somewhere shortening his life. And still they sound good. This is definitely a last hurrah in a sense...and in a sense its the begining of the end.

I will never again critize Landy for having Brian do the Sweet Insanity album and "Smart Girls"... because I just watched the Fat Boys featuring The Beach Boys.  Looks like Brian wasn't the only one making a fool of himself around that time, I can't blame the illness for it anymore. 

Well, this is probably one of the worst collaboration songs of the 80s (ala do they know it's christmas). It's called spirit of the forest, and includes our boy Brian Wilson. Ringo Starr is there two, and actually a lot of big names (David Gilmour). So, I guess they were doing it for the cause and not the song.

That clip of 'Don't go near the water' is so cool. Its filmed about 15 minutes walk from where I live. The pier in the film was burned and blown down leaving only skeletal remains.

That "goin on" performance is absolutely totally friggin awesome!  They sound fantastic vocally and instrumentally, Carl looks and sounds great, and it is so cool to see Brian there, pounding on the keyboards, doing his vocal part and pumping the fist at the end!  Denny is of course missing, though -- the only drawback . . .

Once you download the vid, rename the extension as .flv and you'll need a media player capable of playing flv vids such as the awesome VLC player. In what other clips, besides the "Mess of Help" promo, does Dennis play keyboards? Those are the only two I can think of, off the top of my head.

Dennis plays keyboards in all of the Central Park '71 footage from the network TV special. Don't know why none of that has made it to Youtube. it circulates pretty freely. They perform Heroes, Okie from Muskogee, Forever, Its About Time and I Get Around. Great footage with great sound. Also Dennis plays keys on a lot of things, like Heroes and Rhonda from the various '75 to '80 concerts....many of which the footage is in collectors hands.

"gonna hustle you" was released on a Jan&Dean-anthology I believe. The title was too suggestive.

Personally, I think Jan overcame a lot to even perform again. I recall a interview with him not long before he passed away where he explained that he had to listen to a CD of his songs before every concert so he could remember all the lyrics/parts for the show. He then demonstrated that the one lyric he had never forgotten was the spoken word portion to "Dead Man's Curve" - fairly profound. It took him years to put together his last album, but his determination kept him going. As an artist attempting to overcome severe brain damage, Jan Berry deserves a lot of respect.

Absolutely.  Jan Berry had a hero's heart.  A courageous giant.

First of all, Jasper -- thanks so much for posting all these fantastic videos.  What a treat it has been watching them!

It's amazing how good they looked and sounded on that 1980 ABC appearance.  Especially Carl -- I had somehow gotten the impression that 1980 was a low point for him, with lots of drinking, marital problems, etc.  But his appearance, singing, playing, and general demeanor are all great in that video -- and "Goin On" as well.

Love to see Brian banging on the piano, as well.  Al and Mike (especially Mike) look pretty dweeby, but that's to be expected, I guess.  I am amazed in all these youtube videos, that Mike always seems weird, even going back to the early 60s, with his awkward gyrations and hand gestures.  They should've just put a guitar in his hands, even if the amp was never plugged in, just to give him something to do besides act weird.

It's such a shame that that kind of music is laughed at now. People just don't, "get it," and I really do hate saying that. I simply do not understand why large scale productions and excellent songs are now passe. People will laugh in the face of anyone who admits to liking this type of stuff.

Besides having disgustingly bright and ugly samples, it has PRE-MADE songs almost programmed in. It required a great strength of the finger to push down a key and it would play with a full arrangement of instruments. That means I could hit *record* and press a key and have a song done for me. There's a whole group of kids now growing up, (my generation) who have this availability to them, it's the collective lazyness of a whole bunch of people. I have a digital keyboard, (http://www.yamahapkowner.com/gallery/DGX305/galleryImage4.jpg) and I'm fairly ashamed to own it. I make full-scale productions on my own, but not with real musicians! I play the keyboards fine and just overdub to my heart's content. I once had this girl come over with her Tenor Sax and we did a faux-Gershwin type of thing. But anyway, why wouldn't Brian be in the same league as the classical composers?

If I didn't use Rhapsody I'd have never heard ANYTHING. Simply do not have the money to run out buying everything I would like to hear!

I listen to a reasonable amount of classical music. Some of it is touching, beautiful, staggering, astonishing, etc. While some of it is pure wankery, akin to a dude with long hair shredding on his red guitar.

I don't doubt that Brian is very talented -- but people put him on this level for some reason. Maybe it's because we have nothing or nobody else to put up "there", so we put Brian up there. Or we put Paul Maccartney up there, etc. Remember that poll or newspaper thing that claimed Paul to be a musical genius or something? Well if Paul's a music genius -- I'm an 11 legged frog!

I find Pet Sounds to be an excellent selection of songs, beautifully produced and recorded. It's easy to overestimate Brian's talents when you put him against the Beatles (Or any other rival group of which he's often compared). Because the Beatles were doing big productions to simple songs (with some exceptions) whereas Brian was doing both at once. If Brian and Bach had a boxing match -- with no interference from a ressurected Murry, an irate Mike Love, or an extra chubby Carl Wilson -- Bach would win without breaking a sweat.

Anyone remember the classical inspired Simpsons episode? It was GREAT.

I'd recomend some Claude Debussy to you. His music means more to me than many other artist's music. His is so beautiful, easy to comprehend, immediatly accesible, though it leans more to jazz sounds than typical classical music like Bach if that's what you were going for.

I've listened to a bit of Stravinsky, not enough to make any significant comment on it. I tend to get 'locked in' on a certain thing and form a bubble round my ears with it, unfortunately not experiencing as much as I'd like to otherwise.

I was having a discussion about classical music with my friend the other day. He claims very stubbornly that all classical music is boring as heck. I wish George Martin didn't sound so overwritten and rehearsed when he does these things.  I've only seen a glimmer of someone who seems like a real person, and that's when he played that take of "A Day in The Life" in Anthology and smiled.  Most of the time it seems like he's giving some great speech, even when he talks about Lennon dropping acid in front of him.

He's British, he's supposed to be uptight.

These performances are interesting. On record I don't think they have ever sounded chaotic -- no matter how many musicians on a song -- but playing the same songs live with a larger number of musicians always sounds a bit cluttered. Whereas I find the Hawaii concerts very pleasing, even as sloppy and simple as they are being only the five of them.

What do you think of Brian's SMiLE live performances with the huge touring band, then?

In response to the false setto comment on the YouTube site, I guess it's not uncommon for Brian to have a little falsesetto, since he used/uses it in his first solo recordings ("Brian Wilson", and "Sweet Insanity"). I guess it's just rare that he would use it live back then. I love how he goes into that great doo-wop ending on that clip. What else did he perform at this show?

I've seen the TV performances, and the Pet Sounds live stuff, but that's about it. There's something about the BW band performances (perhaps that I've never been to see it live -- just on TV or boot) that it sounds very lacking. Even with each musician playing spotlessly (which they do very well) and the vocals being perfect; something is missing. Maybe it's just nostalgia for the Beach Boys to be playing. For them to be beaming smiles off of each other and seeing a family team up there playing music.

It has to do with Elton being the most famous pianist of that era. So when someone starts jammin' on the ol' eighty-eights, they might be wont to say that.

Call me crazy, and I'm sure you will, but other than Al, I didn't find that Help Me Rhonda performance to be great at all.  As a matter of fact, I thought it was pretty bad.  Carl sounds terrible and the music is a mess!  I'm not trying to knock the boys at all.  I have seen great performances from this time period, but this one is pretty rough to these ears.

Brians vocal shines on this compared to the rest of them. Great seeing Carl drunk also. This was the infamous Australian tour with the David Frost involvement?

There's something very disorientating about seeing a drunk Carl Wilson standing next to a sober Dennis Wilson. Sixth months later when I saw the band for the first time, Carl was in much better shape (i.e. slimmer and sober).

I've always wondered which came first, the end of Carl's marriage and then the drugs and weight gain or the drugs and weight first with the marriage ending after. Anybody know?

Nah, the loud part. Dennis is the low part, Carl is the really loud part, trying to do backup harmonies and failing miserably. Carl was really awful during this period. Carl in 77-78 was as bad as Brian in 1980-81 and at Farm Aid 98. Sad.

Good question, Jane, and one I've been wondering about myself. I actually think Carl at this point was functioning BARELY higher than Brian, and honestly worse off than Dennis. GOK, esp...really, if I knew NOTHING about the group except their story, and didn't know what they looked like and saw that performance, I'd have been 100% certain that *Carl* was the one that needed to be under Landy's "care".

Eh, he just looked drunk. He still sang alright, just that "stand up, sit down, do whatever you want" part was a little drunken-silly.

 1. Mike Love's brother was a complete asshole!!!!!
     he was the reason Carl's buddy Blondie Chaplin left the friggin' group.

Anyone else? I think these performances are very revelatory in the BB's canon.

It makes me sad when I see this one.  Carl was so messed up during that time, and he more than likely was pretty drunk there, he wasn't his usual easy happy self, that stuff made him into a totally different person, a normally soft spoken guy was loud and mouthy.  I love Carl and hate to see him in that state.

He had a bad breakup with Annie the year before, and he lost his way for a while.

"You can do whatever you want. " I can't tell if Carl sounds like a jerk there or just a funny guy drunk who's usually very quiet.

The performance is not as bad as myth has it; and Carl isn't as wasted as myth told it. The flutes sound a bit silly, especially since they're doing vocal parts instead of their own lines.

after watching the GOK performance after the Surfer Girl one, Carl has straightened up quite a bit between those 2 songs, I think he did a good job singing GOK, they all seemed a little off on those 2 performances, maybe they were tired, jet lag, no telling, GOK

I often read that Brian's 1998 Farm Aid appearance was especially bad. I've seen the video and thought it was actually really good, except for Willie Nelson forgetting lyrics. But Brian did a good job IMHO.

About Farm Aid... I remember seeing it after someone taped it for me. I remember how disrespectful the hosts for CMT were towards Brian. During his (rambling) introduction for Lay Down Burden, they kept talking over it, and made some kind of faces. Granted, it's been 7 years or so since I've last seen it, but I remember thinking to myself that it wasn't going over too well.

That whole St.Charles/Joe Thomas era was really odd. Seeing Brian singing standing up wearing a heavy jacket was even odder...oddest yet was the performance with Deana Carter that was heavily overdubbed and features Brian dancing. If someone uploads *that* one, they have my admiration...

It looks like I haven't seen all of Brian at Farm Aid. I have a 3 song afternoon set (Do It Again/In My Room/Warmth Of The Sun) and thought that's all. So he appeared once again and did songs like "Lay Down Burden"...

It was around the same era as the "God Only Knows" clip. Brian was using reading glasses (smaller than the ones seen in the GOK broadcast) as he struggled a bit reading the lyrics propped up on his piano. One got the impression that he wasn't very familiar with the song, but he performed the whole thing solo. It was introduced by the MC as a new Brian Wilson song; I seem to remember it being broadcast on MTV or VH-1, but I'm not sure.

That performance of "Don't Worry Baby" is awful. I've sang it better in the shower, and my included drumming and musicianship was also much better.

Look at all of those people watching them foul up a great song! I wonder how many believers were turned away by that performance?

My favorite part is when the crowd is shown, and the little girl with no teeth starts laughing. It really looks like she's laughing at the perfomance.

I found it hilarious, too. A little sad, true, but we know that Brian's 1000x better now.

Just wondering, does anyone out there have video of the Beach Boys acceptance speach for their induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame? I just wanted to see what Mike Love had to say to the Beatles. I've heard about it and read about it of course in that "biography" of Brian, but never have seen it.

wierd playing Night Time over Fire video...

Brian's posture at the end of that Landy clip is really sad.  Compared to when he's interviewed by himself, it's an amazing contrast.

I noticed that when Landy was talking, Brian kept lowering his head and looking down like a small child. When he was by himself, he was actually pretty articulate.

I wish he would fix his hair like that again. I think his hair looks a bit off now, if I'm being honest.

That brought me back to realizing how great Pet Sounds is. I wonder though, if Paul were to conduct a large ensemble of musicians, if his results would rival Brian's? The Beatles and George Martin did wonderful things by themselves, whereas Brian was one brain operating 30+ people.

He does sound strange in that clip. If anything I would have expected a much rougher, less audible voice. He didn't sound like himself at all, but his voice sounded like it had more substance to it than in some of the audio I've heard from the previous few years. Are there any clips of him singing from around this time?

Hmm, I think this is decent evidence of John's views on the group. Paul says it over John's listing over several U.S bands, obviously trying to get the damn word in there. John notices, looks at Paul, but does not affirm it by saying it. Very interesting.

I've really never heard a live version of this song that I've liked. The closest has been the Hawaii performance and simply because Brian was there and it feels unique amongst all other performances of it.

The guys were on The Tonight Show, and Joan Rivers was guest hosting. I don't remember the exact question, but Brian starts talking about recently meeting and talking with Phil Spector about some project!

It never occured to me, but it seems like Brian and Mike share the elad vocal on H&V. I been in this town so long that back in the city (Brian) I've been taken for a lost and gone and unknown for a long long time (Mike).

Love the Celebrate the News clip and have it for a few years. Mike and Dennis really get into a very cool vocal groove at the end, but too bad how poorly it's filmed with no close ups.

Sounds like some of it was pre-recorded. The "intro" for example, which was sung by Brian, has none member moving his lips....

This was pretty cool.  Brian talking about California Girls and "being in love with girls" is fantastic!  Also the Cal. Girls performance that sounds like the audio is way slowed down on.  I've never heard Mike sing that one so low before!

Hey thanks. You know if I was able to I would put the 1979 Good Timin and Here Comes The Night vids on there. The later is super cheasy in a good way.

I always loved to hear this performance, but I never saw it. I think Brian did a great job, his singing is really rockin' at times and he has that certain mystique around him which seems to have gone in later years imo....

I have a few clips from the L.A. and KTSA album on VHS...but I've noticed that there are some clips from those albums on YouTube already. I'm not sure if those are the same I have. Have to check that out.

Probably because of the recent release of Brian's "biography" Wouldn't It Be Nice the Dutch TV host Ive Niehe decided to interview him. Unfortunately he took the book as the sole truth. To worsen things he even managed to use the wrong pictures several times (zooming in on Carl instead of Brian). Needless to say he didn't make many friends among BB-fans...

Present are Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love AND Ricky Fataar (who would leave a month later in December...). Ricky is not to be seen clearly unfortunately, Billy Hinsche is though.

Anyone have the A&E Biography on Brian Wilson? I think it was called a Beach Boys Tale. It's really really good, but it's not available on dvd, only vhs.
