Title: The Beatles Survivor #12 Winner: HELTER SKELTER
Post by: pixletwin on October 01, 2017, 03:57:19 PM
The writing was clearly on the wall. This was the beginning of the end...

We are going to split the album in two, so round #11 is Disc 1 and round #12 will be Disc 2.

Quote
The Beatles, also known as the White Album, is the ninth studio album by English rock group the Beatles, released on 22 November 1968. A double album, its plain white sleeve has no graphics or text other than the band's name embossed,[a] which was intended as a direct contrast to the vivid cover artwork of the band's earlier Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Although no singles were issued from The Beatles in Britain and the United States, the songs "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" originated from the same recording sessions and were issued on a single in August 1968. The album's songs range in style from British blues and ska to tracks influenced by Chuck Berry and by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

On release, The Beatles received favourable reviews from the majority of music critics, but other commentators found its satirical songs unimportant and apolitical amid the turbulent political and social climate of 1968. The band and Martin have since debated whether the group should have released a single album instead. Nonetheless, The Beatles reached number one on the charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States and has since been viewed by some critics as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Easy...

Revolution #9

What are the chances we leave Ringo alone for a while? There are atleast 3 tracks (including Revolution #9) that I'd vote off before Good Night. Perfect closer for such an eclectic album.

This is the easiest vote ever

Revolution 9 is IMO, by a long distance, the worst thing to appear on a Beatles release.  It's also the best argument for The White Album as a single disc.

Revolution 9 has redeeming qualities for me.  Furthermore the casual Beatle or classic rock fan will understand "Number 9, Number 9, Number 9...." as a cultural reference.

Start singing any of half of the other white album tunes you'll get blank stares of non-recognition.

I vote Honey Pie

I find disc 2 to be significantly weaker than disc 1.

Anyway, I'm going for Long, Long, Long this round. Has to be one of the least well-known Beatles songs, along with, perhaps, Hey Bulldog.

Fantastic! Boring shouty pointless dreck's gone! Shoo shoo shoo :) John's really bad at writing rockers. Paul has natural gift for it, Beatles & solo career (though cover albums I dislike by both, with few exceptions).

"Sadie" next to boot.

Which John solo song you've got in mind against, for example, rockers in Ram?

Easy.

"Cold Turkey" rocks far harder than anything Paul has ever done.

"I Found Out".

"Well Well Well"

Pretty much the ENTIRE Plastic Ono Band album.

Heck, even "(Just Like) Starting Over" rocks harder in a traditional 50's sense than most of Paul's solo stuff.

All these pitted against what? "Too Many People" or "Monkberry Moon Delight"?  :lol

I think by the time John turned 31 he felt like he had mostly out grown trying to rock like he was still a kid.

I think your opinion of  Paul being a harder rocker sort of aligns with your idea that music should always be sunny and positive.

Anyhoo, I can appreciate Paul's strengths. For example, he was a much better producer and his song writing craft was more  consistent than John's. I think you are just too dogmatically anti-John at this point.

So, um, rock away.

2 pixletwin: Thanks to the detailed answer. Point-by-point:

Can't stand "Cold Turkey" since 1st listen. Don't like as a whole Plastic Ono Band. I didn't hear anything as cool by John as "Jet" - it's rocker thru & thru. I'm glad Paul still sings it.

"Just Like Starting Over" rocks? Hm, not sure about it.

It's very sporting of you to say I'm "dogmatically" anti-John but I hope you're sitting right now as I do like some of his songs. F.ex. "God", "Crippled Inside", "Dear John", "Mother" (Anthology Ascot version), to tell just few.

Yes, I did say I like positive music. What you're trying to say there? Can't rockers be positive? Aren't there positive rockers? To me, perfect rocker is sth. fun, full of energy, catchy, not overly pointlessly long till you get bored by it, with too much guitar soloing which yells "Coz we can!". "Jet" fits the "perfect rocker" bill. You clearly like deep stuff, a la "Cold Turkey". Which, btw, is YOUR opinion. It isn't fact if you read lotsa people/ critics say it. It's too just THEIR opinions, obviously. Sure we can agree to that?

You were comparing RAM. None of the songs you mention are from RAM. ;)

Well I'd be lying if I said  your opinion wasn't interesting, to say the least. :-X
Which John solo song you've got in mind against, for example, rockers in Ram?

And yes, Dear John is a great little vignette. Spooky too. Almost like he had premonitions.

I’ve been out a while. What a weak bunch of songs. I only like 2-3 of them.

Will pick Sexy Sadie to go.

I'm going to use this juncture to make a rather odd defense of Good Night.

There's no doubt it's about the cheesiest song you could imagine. Of course, it was deliberately so. However, I'm going to personally not vote for it until maybe the middle of the pack in this round for the following reason: It's a great example of Lennon and McCartney showing that, basically, they could write anything they wanted, and do a pretty darn good job of it. I'm sure if they wanted to write a good jazz piece, they could have done it. If they wanted to write a classical music piece, they could have done it (some of the Baroque Pop pieces on Pepper were just short of that). Good Night is so "out there" compared to most everything else they did it sort-of stands out as a piece saying to everybody, "Hey, look what we can do!" So, as bad as it is, it's actually kinda interesting for that reason.

Anyway, I'll vote for Sexy Sadie, too.

I'm with ya SMiLE-addict. I'm always reminded of Paul's cherished memory - listening to John sing 'Good Night' in the studio. Why didn't they record it? Would have been a great addition to the Anthology! Oh well.

Yep, it's boring. :) The R&R Circus jam sesh. isn't good either.

"Yer Blues" [noice to see CBC go. :)]

I actually like the song, particularly the RNR Circus version, but its easily my least fav of the remaining six.

Birthday...no doubt about it. It’s fun. I play it every birthday (and many times in between), but lyrically it doesn’t deserve to survive. Granted, Helter Skelter isn’t very strong lyrically, either, but that song is so epic it works.

Birthday

I am utterly stumped now. I like every single one of the tracks which are left equally.

I love Revolution. It's iconic. It sounds like no other song... except for the single version of Revolution which is superior in just about every way.

I like Helter Skelter. It's touted by some as the first Heavy Metal song... Whether it is or isn't, it's bleak and, like some  Beach Boys, it is tainted a bit by the Manson mythos.

My pick for survivor has a wonderful melody. I never get sick of singing along with it. I also like the sparse orchestration with the light brass section.

For me, "Mother Nature's Son" deserves to be the survivor of Disc 2.

I think there are songs that predate Helter Skelter that could qualify as proto metal - stuff by Blue Cheer, Cream, Iron Butterfly, Hendrix, and had it been released at the time, you could put Mrs. O Leary's Cow on the list.

I'm voting for Mother Nature's Son.

I much prefer the single version of Revolution.   Helter Skelter almost got my vote.  But, I'm hoping MNS becomes the first not so obvious Beatle pick to win a survivor poll.

Obviously I’m not voting for Mother Nature’s Son as personally it bores me and I’ve been trying to vote it out for a while.
Revolution 1 is very good, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s hardly the definitive version of the song.
So yeah, for me it’s an easy vote for Helter Skelter

Tough choice between Helter Skelter and Revolution 1, but...

Helter Skelter for the win!!!

Though, I must say, I really miss Ringo's 'I've got blisters on my fingers!' in the mono mix. It's the perfect exclamation point for such an epic track.

Super-cool to see "Helter Skelter" win! :3d

I didn't initially & still don't hear anything "iconic" in "Revolution 1" (single included, it's still the same song). It doesn't impress, to me it's just nice song. Ditto "Mother Nature's Son". Not really into Paul's acoustic stuff.

An interesting take on the winners so far, by primary songwriter (in red):
No, it's predictable.

It *is*, by many accounts. :3d They must be right. Incidentally, I definitely don't consider Manson link to be big deal.
