R. I. P.
I have my problems with Joe's sound on Stars&Stripes and Imagination. TWGMTR and NPP were pretty good, though. And let's not forget that it was in no small part to his work that the Beach Boys reunion happened at all. I don't know how much he added to the songwriting of Brian and he but they did come up with some very memorable tunes. "Tell me why" imo is one of the greatest songs of Brian's solo career.
My best wishes to his family and friends.

I had always assumed that "raise a glass to kindness" was a Joe Thomas line
Could be. Still sounds terrible. But it takes not away from my point that Mike just hasn't delivered the goods (regarding lyrics) that would make him the guy you would want to write lyrics for the songs. As I mentioned before, I didn't want to turn it into another Mike gripe thread. I honestly think his complaint, *on its face* is not 100% invalid. I certainly would like to hear what Brian and Mike could have come up with. I'm not or wasn't convinced they had zero chance to do some good stuff. That being said, I think the complaint has some subtext that goes beyond literally being perturbed he didn't write alone with Brian. I think that complaint springs from a large series of things he took issue with regarding the reunion. The whole thing went sour, and then a list of grievances began to take shape. Sort of like a couple breaking up and then listing off a bunch of stuff that weren't deal breakers but become part of the list of complaints in the aftermath. "And another thing, we always had to watch the movies HE liked!!!!" "And you never paid for the drugs. Not once....."

FWIW I seem to remember an insider's tweet (or whatever social media platform was used) back then saying that Brian and Mike would meet in the studio later that day to write a song. Couple of hours later the same person wrote it "didn't go well" or something to that effect. That's what I remember. It's possible that I am missing something so please correct me if I'm wrong.
Otherwise (I mentioned it before) the problem I see is that Mike just has to come up with better things than "spring vacation, good vbration", "We'll find a place in the sun where everyone can have fun [fun fun]" or those forced sounding ones like "we raise a kind to kindness" from the single version of "Isn't it Time". If that is what you bring to the table or what you come up with when they give you a chance to show what they would be missing out on, than that's not good advertising. He had a very nice song with "Daybreak" - although I'd wish they re-recorded it with only the Beach Boys - that had a reasonable good lyric. In retrospect, and this is not only regarding the TWGMTR time, I think Mike's strength does indeed lie more with hooks than actual full lyrics. Listen to that great "bring back my baby" hook from "Daybreak". Or that cool bass line of "Isn't it Time" that he came up with as I understand.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Streaming vs Owning: Do you miss the good ol’ days of music?

I must admit I never even started with music streaming and all that stuff. I have no account, never had and don't plan on creating one. Sure, I listen to some music on youtube but that's only when I am sitting at the computer (like right now). Otherwise I listen to CDs and LPs and don't feel that that will change. I just like having it that way, whatever the underlying motives may be (possibly holding a physical product in your hand etc.). It's not a ideological kind of thing, everyone should do as one pleases. I just am totaly satisfied this way.

The Lost Recordings - Ella Fitzgerald LIVE IN EAST BERLIN 1967 “Ella Fitzgerald – As in the good old days at the Savoy!”It all began with a coincidence and complicity between Ronald Trisch, the head of the East German music agency, and Horst Lippmann, the West Berlin representative of major American artists. In January 1967, Ella Fitzgerald was on a European tour with Duke Ellington and his orchestra. After a concert in West Berlin, January 25 was a day off. They jumped at the chance to organize a somewhat adventurous "detour" for Ella to East Berlin. At 11 p.m. on Wednesday evening, 3,000 people flocked to the Friedrichstadt Palace. This appearance in East Berlin would be the only one of her career. No big orchestra behind her, but the 3 exceptional musicians of the Jimmy Jones Trio to accompany her. This was a perilous affair. Karlheinz Drechsel, one of the organizers, and father of Ulf Drechsel, our correspondent in Germany, describes in his Memoirs, an excessively nervous Ella when, after crossing Check Point Charlie, she finds herself backstage. Unusual anxieties haunt her thoughts: this concert is not like the others, she hasn't had enough time to rehearse, what will the audience think, what do they expect of her, will she be able to seduce them? No one can calm her down, and she fidgets with her eternal white handkerchief. These thoughts run through her mind as her manager, Norman Granz, enters the stage and introduces the musicians: Sam Woodyard on drums, Bob Cranshow on double bass, Jimmy Jones on piano, then settles for a simple "I think you all know Ella". She enters, murmurs a timid "danke schön" and, miraculously, the audience greets her with a thunderous cheer. In less than a breath, the strained smile that marked her lips is transformed into happy laughter. The "First Lady of Jazz" emerges from her torpor. She was about to deliver one of her most memorable concerts to the East Berlin public. The Lost Recordings managed to obtain the original analog tapes of this unique performance, one in stereo and one in mono. Neither version was complete. The concert had to be reconstructed, and the version of each track that most perfectly revealed the magic of the moment had to be chosen prior to the restoration work. For almost an hour and a half, she treated the audience to some twenty tracks from the other side of the wall, alternating timeless standards with the hits of the moment, from the Beatles to Nancy Sinatra... It's now one o'clock in the morning. The concert should be over. But the ovation is immense. The audience doesn't want to let Ella go. She returns to give an encore of her childhood song "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" and a climax in the form of "Hello, Dolly!". Late that night, before getting back into her car, heading for West Berlin, exhausted but drunk with happiness, she confesses to Karlheinz Drechsel: "It was just like the good old days at the Savoy!
