On Sunshine Tomorrow, in GAme of Love, who sings the little bit after the second verse and second chorus ("the purpose of a man is to love a woman like a woman love a man now..."?

It's Carl, right?  I'm 99% sure it is but sometimes I can almost hear Brian in there.

As an aside, this version of the song blows my mind.  They managed to make it so seriously sexy.

Yup, that’s 100% Carl on the bridge. And I agree, it totally exceeded my expectations!

Thanks!

I loooooved listening to this.   I agreed with so many of the things you said, too, from the "All Beach Boys all the time" sentiment to your views on many of the records.  I too would rank In Concert among my favorites.  In fact, it would be my desert island BB disc if I had to pick.  It just has everything I need on it, from the amazing 70s stuff to cool versions of the early hits to GV and Caroline, No.

Also, so pleased to hear someone mention Our Car Club.  One of my favorites, which doesn't get enough love in my view.

I really really look forward to more of the podcasts.

By the way, I really like what I've heard of the Explorers Club, but have had difficulty finding your records even in some of the best record stores.  Love the cover of Freedom Wind - am I correct in thinking it's an homage to All Summer Long?

Brian's twitter announced the shows in Nashville yesterday and there was a link to the website, which states that "2018 tour dates are being announced" and "Stay tuned as more dates are added".

Woohoo!

Comes across as little bit pretentious.  He had this to say when Skrillex asked him for help on a track:

'Oh, thank you, Mr. Parks. We will destroy the world.' I said, 'Okay...' I Google him and there he is, on YouTube, in front of 30,000 people, pouring beer onto a laptop computer, at which point the crowd jumps into the mosh pit and has an erection.…I have two things I can do: Run away from all this in horror because I’m so superior, or dig in and serve and try to bring hope to the hopeless. That can be done behind the curtain, and that’s where I’m very comfortable working.…I treat every job as if it were the very thing that will define me. Nothing is beneath me. I think that is evident to people who ask my best."[

Dick...

A little bit pretentious?

I think when you say "nothing is beneath me" in direct reference to someone you're working with, you are clearly implying that it is in fact beneath you.  I wouldn't want to work with Skrillex either, but I wouldn't take the job and then diss him.  Classless.

Video of "Susie Cincinnati" from 10/6:

Al sounds great!

They did drop the key as I would have expected. Sounds great.

It's so cool that they added this.  Sounds fantastic.  I love this song and only wish I could have seen it live.  I live in hope for another tour that will continue to feature some of the less obvious cuts.

The lady in front of me had her phone up, and was googling "Brian Wilson health".  Below the search box, google suggested other related search terms, and among these was "Is Al Jardine Dead".

That has to be one of the more depressing things I've read on this board.

This may seem like an odd question but does anyone know how to contact band members?  We met Darian last week and he was super-nice and took the time to have a real conversation.  At the time I didn't say much because I was a little awed but it would be nice to let him know how much he's appreciated by us fans.

Most are active on Facebook.

Thanks.  Looks like Darian hasn't been active there for a while, though.

He is. You likely have to be his friend to see it. Send him a request. Many fans are friends of the band members.

Thanks!  I'll do that.

There's a post on Al Jardine's facebook today page about Darryl Dragon.  In it he mentions that they decided to add Suzie Cincinnatti to the set...

Very interesting. I saw Al's post earlier in the day and he hadn't mentioned it. It looks like he went back and added to his post that they were planning to do the song.

It'll be interesting especially if it *actually* makes it into the setlist. It hasn't been performed live by any BB-related band as far as I know since 1977. I think Al was going to do it in the early 2000s for his cancelled Pop Overthrow Festival gig, but that's about it.

I hope it does - it's a great song and seems like a natural in a concert setting given its upbeat tempo.

They played four bars of Suzie Cincinnati at Radio City Music Hall, during the band introductions (for Al).  I nearly lost it!

One of the amazing but also frustrating things about Brian's band is that it's 100% plausible that they could knock out just about any imaginable song. It's not like, say, the 1981 Beach Boys when you can't blame them too much for not trying to do "Surf's Up" or something; they couldn't have pulled it off.

But all of the deep cuts and Al songs and Blondie songs, just about anything you could imagine, *this* band could pull off. I imagine in my head some eccentric, diverse selections that would cater to them and Brian's abilities, songs like "Goin' On" or "Santa Ana Winds" or "Airplane", etc.

I agree completely.  I'm sure there's no song in the catalogue they couldn't pull off remarkably well.  I know you've said this before, but in my fantasies I imagine Blondie having a little set to himself, where he could do songs like Leaving This Town, Funky Pretty, maybe even I Was Made to Love Her, and a bunch of extra songs for Al (Suzie Cincinnati, Airplane, Time to Get Alone).

I was at the show on Saturday at Radio City Music Hall.  I've seen several shows during this tour, the earliest being June 2016 and the most recent being end of April 2017.  I went into the Radio City show with high expectations, just because Brian mentions playing at the venue in the book and I think he sees it as an "important" venue.  I had the sense that he was actually nervous, and he seemed off to me (compared to the AMAZING April 2017 show in Newark, during which he was joking and the whole band seemed to be having a really good time).  The show started off with him shouting for his piano tech, so something wasn't right at the start, and maybe that threw him off?  He didn't do much talking and at one point started to say something, then said "never mind".  It wasn't a bad performance, but he seemed less relaxed than I've seen him on other shows on this tour.  As much as I'd happily pay to see this band every night for the rest of my life, I think Brian needs a break.  The tour has gone on for a long time with relatively short breaks.  It would be hard for anyone, and extra-hard for a 75-year old with physical issues.  I have seen Brian give excellent performances on this tour and I do think he still has it in him, I just hope he gets a good, long, refreshing break and can then go back on tour.

The first set was excellent, and pretty much everything I could ask for (okay, I'd add Do it Again, but that's just me being greedy).  They played Let the Wind Blow, I'd Love Just Once to See You, Aren't You Glad, Darlin, and Wild Honey.  Five Wild Honey songs!  Heaven.  Plus some relatively deeper cuts like Let Him Run Wild and Salt Lake City.  And of course Feel Flows (very nice of Blondie to point out that Carl wrote the song, I thought).

Having said all that, the audience was relatively quiet.  I had really good seats at the front near the "VIP" section and a third of those people arrived late and wandered in and out with drinks and whatnot.  It was obvious they were not all hardcore fans but rather people for whom it's not a big deal shelling out 250 or 500 dollars for tickets.

Finally, I have to say (again) that Al is unbelievable.  His voice is so strong and good, and after playing for two and a half hours, he ran across the stage waving at the audience as though he was just out for a morning jog.  The word spry comes to mind.  He seemed to be having a lot of fun, and it's a joy to see him interact with Brian.

If I had the chance to interview Mike Love, I would ask him what his favorite song to sing would be, not considering the audience reaction.  Mike would probably base his response on what the audience does, but I am guess he may have a difference answer if you took that out of the equation.

Mike:   Pieces Brothers?
Carl:  Darlin' or Dancin' in the Streets
Bruce:  I Write the Songs
Brian:  Vegetables
Al:  Runaway

Wait, Carl sang Dancin in the Street?!  I've never heard this - is it available anywhere?

I actually read a quote somewhere in which he said his favorite song to perform live was Surfin' USA, because of the energy of the song.

They performed "Dancing in the Street" in the early 90s, mostly 1991 and apparently some shows in 1992-93 as well. A lot of the performances during the time (but not all) seemed to be outside of the US for some reason.

The setlist.fm website shows Mike's band having done in a couple of times, once in 2011 and once in 2015.

Thanks, Hey Jude!  I'll have to have a close look through some of the videos from that era on YT and see if I can find it.

I am not!  I thought there wasn't supposed to be any name-calling on this board, anyway.  Sheesh.

It was a lighthearted response to your rather condecending post. You know, the sort that begins "I can't understand why people think this, the idiots"

But the fact you got offended is rather telling.  Maybe you'd better have another craft beer.

Um, I was joking.

I still don't understand why so many people feel that it's important that more people get turned on to the Beach Boys.  The whole "if it gets people listening to the Beach Boys, then it's a good thing"...I don't really understand.  The Beach Boys are one of the most famous bands ever.  Brian is almost universally regarded as a genius.  Yes, 95% of people only know their surf songs...but who cares?  It's not my problem if people don't know how good Holland or Love You is.  In fact, it makes being a fan better.  When Paul McCartney came to my city the tickets sold out in about a nanosecond, even the ones that were literally thousands of dollars.  I only got tickets because they released a block of (really bad) seats the day before the show and I got lucky.  When Brian came to my city I sat in the front row for about 70 bucks a ticket.

I wholeheartedly agree that Brian and co deserve the utmost in recognition and respect, but I think they already have it.

You may not understand why, but your post makes it perfectly clear. It's your thing that makes you feel special and you don't want anyone else to share it.

Sorry, but you're a........hipster!

I am not!  I thought there wasn't supposed to be any name-calling on this board, anyway.  Sheesh.

No really, it's not that I don't want to share my special thing - quite the contrary.  I love meeting other people who really love the BBs and discussing them.  I'm not under any illusion that I'm the only person who loves them.  I'm perfectly happy to share with others members of the Church of Beach Boys.  I just don't feel the need to go out and recruit new members, that's all.

How is it possible that no one has mentioned Ricky Fataar in this thread?  Someone thought that he was the Beach Boy with the greatest similarity to George...

Yes, they both have a soft-spoken image, and both are said to have very sly senses of humour. Also, they are both the most attractive member of their respective bands, in my humble view.
298  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My First BB Concert/Your First BB Concert on: September 07, 2017, 02:34:55 PM
October 29th, 1978. I was 14 years old and had just started my freshman year in high school. Like most of my friends I listened to a wide variety of music, mostly whatever the current hits were at the time. I had a couple of Beach Boys albums, In Concert and Endless Summer and was somewhat familiar with 15 Big Ones, but that was as far as my interest went. My oldest brother was taking me to California over the Christmas holiday and thought that taking me to see The Beach Boys would be a cool way to add to the “California” experience. It took a little convincing to get my parents to agree but they said it was ok for me to go. It’s a good thing too... my brother already bought the tickets…front row center at the Milwaukee Arena!

I was pretty excited to go and in the weeks prior I listened to the Beach Boys quite a bit. This would be my first “real’ concert and I couldn’t wait for the day to arrive. Then real life kicked in. A few days before the concert a friend from the neighborhood died from leukemia. His name was Danny and he was the same age as me. The last time I saw him was early that summer. I was walking to a friend’s house when he rode up on his bike and I could see that he was ill. He was pale and his hair was thin and almost colorless. I asked him how he was and he looked at me and said “the cancer is back”. Even at 14 I knew that it wasn’t good and the look in his eyes told me that he knew he wouldn’t be around much longer. Those few moments have stuck with me since then and will probably always be there. I hadn’t seen Danny since then and it still was stunning news.

As it turned out the visitation at the funeral home was the same day as the concert. A group of us that went to school together met at our old elementary school and walked the few blocks to the funeral home. I don’t think any of us had ever encountered the death of someone in our age group and it was a very difficult and emotional experience for all of us. On the way home I was contemplating telling my brother that I just didn’t feel like going to a concert anymore. My Dad convinced me that I should go and try to have a good time. As usual he was right.

For such a long time ago I still have many vivid memories of that concert. Besides the usual hits I remember Lady Lynda (what a cool song that was!), Peggy Sue (wait…that’s a Buddy Holly song!), Country Pie and Almost Summer (I’ve GOT to get those songs!). There was Dennis Wilson peeling off his shirt and putting on a Milwaukee Bucks t-shirt, much to the delight of the crowd. As Fun, Fun, Fun ended there comes Mike Love to the front of the stage…and as I reached out he shook my hand! Unbelievable night! What I remember most is how the music, and the guys playing it, made me feel so good and so happy after such a tragic and emotional day. From that day on The Beach Boys were “it” for me. I bought everything with The Beach Boys name on it, LP’s, 45s, CDs etc. Rarely has a year gone by that I missed a chance to see either the band or one them solo. I’m probably over 40 shows by now and I will keep going as long as they keep playing. No matter what differences they have with each other Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike, Al, David, Bruce, Blondie, and Ricky will all equally be my favorites. It’s the music…it was and always will be.

I know you posted this almost two months ago but I just had to say that this is quite possibly the best post ever.  And your brother sounds unbelievable...taking you to California and kicking it off with front row seats to see the BBs?

I have no idea how I quoted myself.  Please ignore the double post.
